How to check the ignition module on a car


Today we will look at the design and diagrams of ignition systems for VAZ cars of all major models. Since carburetor versions of VAZ are practically history, we will dwell in detail on the ignition systems of injection cars. Their ignition system is based on an electronic ignition module. We also recommend that you carefully consider the choice of spark plugs and the quality of high-voltage wires, because the quality of the spark and, accordingly, the operation of the ignition system as a whole will depend on them. The information is intended as a reference guide for self-repairing a car.

Version of the module on the 8-valve VAZ-2110

The top ten was equipped with two 8-valve engines of different sizes - 1.5 (2111) and 1.6 liters (21114). The ignition modules for these engines are different.

  • The one and a half liter engine has a module with article number 2112-3705010,
  • and the 1600 cc is equipped with module 2111-3705010.

A module for a 1.5 liter engine costs about 1500-2100, and the second one is 500 rubles cheaper.

Module structure

The module consists of two ignition coils and two high-voltage switch switches.

Inside the module there is a board with radio components and ignition coils filled with compound.

The coil generates a high voltage pulse, and it is a simple transformer with two windings, primary (induction voltage about 500 V) and secondary (induction voltage at least 20 kV). All this is assembled in a single housing, on which there is a connector for signal wires (from the engine control unit) and four terminals for high-voltage wires.

The module operates on the principle of an idle spark - it distributes sparks in pairs to cylinders 1-4 and 2-3 according to impulses transmitted from the ECU.

Basic malfunctions of ignition coils

In any automobile ignition coil there are always two windings - primary (with a small number of turns and a thick wire) and secondary (thin wire with a large number of turns). With the help of a short circuit, the low voltage in the circuit is converted into a high one, and if in the primary circuit there is a voltage of 12 Volts, then in the secondary circuit it already reaches several tens of Kilovolts.

Under the influence of the environment, MHs are destroyed, and they are also subject to aging over time. There are defects in the coils:

  • break in the primary or secondary winding;
  • interturn short circuit in winding wires;
  • cracks in the case (if the case is plastic).

If there is a short circuit in the short circuit, the coil overheats and, as a result, may completely fail. If a crack appears in the housing of the MZ, a spark begins to break through to ground, the engine troits, and in some cases it even runs on two cylinders.

Checking the secondary windings of the module:

  • So, we take the ignition module of the Lada Kalina and turn it so that the conclusions of the high-voltage wires are facing us. Now we connect the device wires to the outputs of the 1st and 4th cylinders. And then we check the 2nd and 3rd cylinders in the same way.

All these testing procedures are best carried out with the module removed; this is much more convenient than doing everything directly under the hood of the car. Removing this part is quite simple, you only need a 5 hexagon and a couple of minutes of time.

Removing the ignition module

To repair the VAZ-2110 ignition module, it must be dismantled. First, check if there is high voltage on all terminals. The most common breakdown is the lack of spark in the second and third cylinders. If you lightly press down on the rear of the housing, the engine can begin to operate normally. But it won't last long. To withdraw you need:

1. Disconnect ground from the battery.

2. Remove the decorative cover covering the block head, if any.

3. Remove all high-voltage wires.

4. Disconnect all wires going to the ignition module. The white rings indicate the numbering of all wires. On the body of the device there is a designation of cylinder numbers.

5. Disconnect the connector from the device.

6. Unscrew the three nuts securing the block.

That's all, the VAZ-2110 ignition module has been removed, and you can start repairing it.

How to check the serviceability of the ignition coil?

Malfunctions of the ignition module lead to unstable engine operation and the inability to start the car. The module's task is to generate high-voltage pulses and transmit them to the spark plug (SZ). The plus of the unit receives + 12V power from the on-board network, the minus is taken from the car body.


Ignition coil for Lada Kalina

The design of the ignition module for 8 and 16 kL Lada Kalina engines includes two high-voltage transformers (coils) and two control units. One coil is connected to cylinders 1 and 4, and the second to cylinders 2 and 3. The device is connected to the SZ using high-voltage wires.

Transformers are controlled by a controller using powerful transistor valves. It receives a reference signal from the crankshaft position sensor, on the basis of which the firing sequence of the coils in the block is calculated. In addition, the controller uses information about rotation speed, coolant temperature, power unit load (mass air flow), crankshaft position and the presence of detonation. The system has no moving parts, so it does not require maintenance or adjustment.

The peculiarity of the device is that it uses a spark distribution method, which is called the “idle” spark method. The cylinders are divided into pairs. A spark is produced in each cylinder of the cylinders.

One group of spark plugs receives a spark at the moment of maximum compression of the fuel assembly (working spark), and the second at the moment of release (idle spark). Moreover, in the first case, the spark plugs are connected to the 1st and 4th cylinders, and in the second - to the 2nd and 3rd. The current in the windings of transformers constantly flows in one direction, so when sparking, the current for one spark plug flows from the side electrode to the central one, and for the second - from the central to the side.

Instructions for replacing the module

If checking the VAZ 2112 ignition module showed that the device needs to be replaced, then you can change the ignition module yourself.

The replacement process looks like this:

  1. Initially, you should turn off the power to the on-board network; to do this, you just need to disconnect the negative terminal from the battery. Many car enthusiasts neglect this step, although in fact it is very important. If you do not disconnect the battery, a short circuit may occur as a result of moisture or other external influences during repairs. And if this happens, then there is a chance that you will have to completely change the wiring in the car. So, to reset the battery terminal, you just need to unscrew the bolt that secures it with a wrench.
  2. Having done this, you will need to disconnect all high-voltage wires connected to it from the module. At the same time, you need to remember their location so that during installation you do not accidentally confuse them, which, again, can be fraught with danger for the entire system as a whole.
  3. After completing these steps, you will need to disconnect the connector with wires from the device itself. To do this, grab the block with your hand and press the latch with which it is attached - the fastener is located at the bottom, you can feel it with your hand. Having done this, you will need to remove the block and put it aside so that it does not interfere with you in the future.
  4. So, now you have two options - remove the device together with the mount or remove it separately. The first option is usually relevant in cases where, in addition to replacing the MZ, you need to perform other repair actions, for example, to get to the antifreeze drain hole of their cylinder block. Of course, it will be more convenient to dismantle the module separately, but then access to other parts and elements will be blocked. To dismantle you will need to unscrew the nuts with your own hands that secure the device to the bracket. Depending on the car, the nuts can be different; for example, they can be made in the form of hexagonal studs. If so, you will need a hex wrench to unscrew them. In any case, after unscrewing the nuts, it is necessary to dismantle the module from the seat.
  5. The procedure for installing a new module is carried out in a similar way, only in reverse order. When connecting with your own hands, be careful and be sure to correctly connect all the wires that connect to the module from the spark plugs. If at this stage you mix up the cylinder numbers on the high-voltage cables, the power unit may not work correctly or may not start at all.

Signs of malfunction of the ignition module on Grant

In order to understand that the reason for the incorrect operation of the car engine is the ignition module, there are 4 characteristic signs:

  1. Difficulty starting the car engine.
  2. Significant drops in engine power (since fuel ignition does not occur in some cylinders).
  3. Errors that are identified as: 0351 (coil break of 1.4 cylinders) and 0352 (2.3 cylinders). In addition, errors associated with misfire can be diagnosed (3001 to 3004 inclusive).
  4. Changing the engine speed (floating speed).
