Should I plug in the EGR or leave it on? Consequences of jamming the USR

October 16, 2021 Category: Useful information.

We have already written about how the EGR system works and what functions it performs. Now let’s look at typical malfunctions in the operation of the recirculation system, which may force the owner to “switch off” the USR valve on a diesel engine.

Despite the advantages in terms of reducing exhaust toxicity, as well as improving the operating culture of diesel internal combustion engines, owners on forums discuss the reduction in power and smoking of engines that accompany the operation of the exhaust gas recirculation system. It is believed that EGR “strangles” the engine.

Another reason to turn off the recirculation system and turn off the USR valve is the reluctance of owners to repair faults.

For the valve to work properly, it is cleaned on average once every 50-60 thousand km in Europe. In the conditions of our fuel, such maintenance must be carried out every 20-30 thousand km.

And if owners ignore this procedure, the diesel internal combustion engine begins to present unpleasant surprises - from increased fuel consumption to engine malfunctions, including its transition to emergency mode.

EGR system

As we all know, the EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) system serves to reduce the emission of harmful substances into the atmosphere, in particular nitrogen oxides (NOx) .
