VAZ 2107 “Seven”, description, pros and cons

The good old “seven”, we all remember it as an unpretentious car, the VAZ 2107, which is perfect not only for trips to the country, but also for fairly long distances. The VAZ 2107 has not changed much, if we take into account the great-grandfather of the 2107, the Fiat124, which became the car of the year back in 1966. In 2012, the plant management decided to stop producing the car due to low demand, but those who have driven their swallow for decades love the pleasant sound of the 72-horsepower engine and the spacious 325-liter trunk. And although acceleration to hundreds in 17 seconds does not impress anyone, the economical consumption of 9.2 liters per 100 kilometers on city streets is appreciated by many motorists.

The worm gear steering is a little annoying, especially if you need to turn the wheels in place or at low speed, you have to work hard, but its five-speed gearbox gives good performance, allowing you to accelerate to 162 km/h on the highway. The brakes are an analogue of the Soviet automobile industry: classic discs at the front and drums at the rear. In general, the car is not bad, it is not much different from the VAZ 2105. Apart from external differences in the radiator grilles and so on, the most important thing still lies under the hood: if in the 2105 model the crankshaft was connected to the camshaft by means of a belt drive, due to which it was less reliable, then in the seventh model the problem was eliminated by installing a chain.

Suspension VAZ 2107

The car's suspension is quite soft, but requires special attention when repairing. The first thing that needs to be said is that problems with the car must be eliminated when they first appear, because a neglected breakdown in the future can cause not only serious malfunctions, but also a sudden accident. The suspension of even domestic cars cannot adapt to our roads, so it is the first to fail, while most faults can be identified by an attentive owner by listening to knocks and rattles while driving.

If you just started to hear knocking, check the suspension by driving the car into a pit. Usually a knock indicates wear of ball joints (20) or rubber bushings (2), rods on the rear suspension; more serious damage may be damage to shock absorbers or springs. If you find nothing and the knocking does not disappear, check if the wheel rims are bent and have them balanced. Most suspension breakdowns can be “treated” by replacing various wearing rubber bands, which are inexpensive, but it is better to take the entire repair kit, since replacing a rubber band on one side will cause an imbalance and increased wear on the other side. If the brake caliper doesn't do the job, you'll spin out when braking or may not be able to brake at all.

VAZ 2107 suspension malfunctions

The car often drifts away from straight-line motion. Leaving everything as it is, the driver risks getting into a skid at high speed and simply flying off the road. If you find a similar malfunction, do not rush to despair; first check the tire pressure, as this is the simplest thing and does not require investment. If the pressure is the same, let's think further. Check the wheel balancing and tire wear; if it is uneven, the cause has been found, but after replacement, re-balance to prevent this from happening in the future. The reason may also be due to incomplete release of the wheels if air has entered the brake system.

There are also more serious reasons for this phenomenon, as a rule, it is an incorrect installation angle of the front wheels or a different clearance on the front wheel bearings - all this is adjustable.

If this is not the reason, then most likely the suspension arm is deformed or one of the springs is weakened. If the noise is not repaired at an early stage, the imbalance will increase, and instead of a soft, pleasant ride, you will experience the unpleasant sensation of hitting the smallest bump.

The wear of tires can also tell a lot, since they not only transmit all the acting forces to the suspension, but also receive feedback. Uneven wear is often caused not only by imbalance and camber or wheel alignment, sometimes it indicates that your shock absorbers are not working or working poorly, or there is significant wear on the hinges and suspension bushings, and sometimes it also means different braking forces, so check the adjustment more often braking system.

If the voice is coming from the rear axle (fig), then immediately after checking the oil level you need to check the axle bearings. If the noise occurs only when turning, then the problem is in the differential pinions, which is caused either by incorrect gear clearance or worn bearings - both of which can be cured by replacement.

The beauty of Soviet cars is that all the components in them are repaired, for example, a shock absorber, if it starts to poison the oil, then it is not necessary to change it entirely, because it is cheaper to replace the oil seal or the sealing ring of the reservoir than the entire assembly.

No less important is the car’s transmission, especially the gearbox. If you hear noise, you will have to disassemble it, unless of course the cause is an oil leak. The noise is mainly caused by worn bearings; replacing them is not so easy, because you need to adapt a pin with a diameter equal to the axes or a few hundredths of a millimeter smaller. If the gears are difficult to engage, then most likely the problem is the tight movement of the fork rods - this occurs due to burrs, jamming of the locking blocks, and contamination of the rod sockets. Treated by replacing worn parts. More dangerous may be spontaneous gear shifting caused by a broken synchronizer spring or severe wear of the locking rings, or, less commonly, wear of the teeth of the synchronizer clutch or ring gear.

Steering can cause problems due to the large free play of the steering wheel, this is a common problem and in 90% of cases the mystery is the wear of the tie rod ball joint tips and this requires 1.5 hours of work with a trip to the nearest auto store for a repair kit. In another situation, such a malfunction may be caused by an increased gap in the worm gear. The steering wheel turns hard, which means the clearance is set incorrectly, but still check the oil level in the steering gear housing and the tire pressure. If you flew into a large hole or had an accident and only after that did everyone notice the problems, then they are most likely caused by the deformation of the load-bearing elements, which are quite difficult to align and if you are not an experienced mechanic, it is better not to undertake this.

A car engine is a rather complex mechanism; it is advisable to diagnose it using an engine tester, which will give you almost all the information. Finding the cause of the breakdown is quite difficult as well as eliminating it. Therefore, it is better to seek help from professionals who at least know what a carburetor and an injector are and what the differences are.

VAZ-2107 engine design

Before we move on to describing the characteristics of the engine, we will talk in detail about all the elements of its design so that you can imagine exactly how the power unit works. Consists of the following main components:

  • cylinder block. The heaviest component made from cast iron. This is where the cylinders are located, which are placed in one row. In addition, the block has passages for coolant, which prevents engine overheating during operation;
  • the crankshaft, which transmits engine rotation to other components of the car. It also has quite a lot of weight. The crankshaft supports (cranks) are made of metal, which is hardened by high-frequency currents for maximum strength;
  • connecting rods with piston pins made of forged steel. These elements are constantly subjected to high loads;
  • pistons with compression and oil scraper rings;
  • cylinder head. This part is made from a durable but very lightweight aluminum alloy. To prevent lubricant leakage, the cylinder head is equipped with a sealing gasket;
  • a flywheel that is used to start an engine. It is in clutch with the starter, which responds to turning the key in the ignition;
  • timing mechanism, which includes the camshaft and valve train.

The car engine is a perfect mechanism, in which the lubrication and cooling systems and supply of the air-fuel mixture are well thought out.

Swan song 2107 or interrupted flight

This version was discontinued either in 2002 or five years later. This inaccuracy is associated with the anarchy that reigned at that time on the VAZ assembly line and at the assembly facilities in Izhevsk. Then the sevens were assembled from what was available and few people thought about the conformity of the modification. In addition, there was a directive to reduce the cost of the car design as much as possible. For example, in the middle of the first decade of the 11th century, you could buy a seven with the following factory tuning:

There may be no ashtrays on the rear door cards;

soft two-layer plastic could be missing, and instead of it, ordinary oak plastic could easily be found;

the armrest handles could also be cast from this very hard plastic;

the horns in the latest versions resembled moped tablets, which, when first wet, emitted a gentle squeak instead of the powerful signal of the standard seven horn;

the door pillars are no longer painted black;

The combined moldings along the sides disappeared.

It was also often possible to find new sevens without headlight washers at all. But all this did not stop the public and they willingly bought cars. Habit is a great thing, it works better than any marketing. Do not offend the old sevens and they will serve faithfully for decades to come. Good roads and optimism to everyone!

The first “seven” rolled off the VAZ assembly line in 1982, and with its design it created a real sensation. In comparison with its predecessor, the “five”, it looked much more solid: a chrome radiator grille, an improved shape of the rear headlights, an updated instrument panel, complemented by a tachometer and a number of new sensors, and one-piece anatomical seats. For such “chic”, the VAZ 2107 was even called the Russian “Mercedes” in the southern regions of the USSR.
