The standard factory model VAZ-2102 has many shortcomings, including in the engine system.

The problem can be easily solved by replacing the old cast iron bushings with bronze ones. They are superior in quality to factory ones, can last several years longer without distortion, and in some cases, even increase the power of the car. They also withstand lack of lubrication and inhibit valve blockages.

Composite sprocket directly relates to engine tuning. At least in order to bring engine optimization into a favorable form. At the car factory, errors are allowed when installing the makers, but if the error on the camshaft exceeds more than 4-5 degrees, then the engine will first of all lose its nameplate power and often an increase in fuel consumption will be added to this.

Installing a new chain instead of the old factory chain can improve engine performance in several ways. The performance of new chain models is good in operation, since they can automatically tighten as they stretch. In addition, they do not require an oil supply, which means that the oil pressure will not constantly drop or rise, and the chain itself will not experience chafing.

After replacement, the service life of all parts related to the timing system increases due to automatically tensioning the chain, which also leads to a decrease in engine noise. Engine performance is improved due to precise operation of the timing valves. What is also considered unique is that the chain tension occurs autonomously, with the engine on and off.

All rotating and reciprocating elements constantly lead to the fact that the engine and its parts begin to collapse, and there is also a colossal loss of power, and all this is only due to the factory heavy weight of the parts. You can replace them, for example, valves, bushings, install lighter pistons and connecting rods, but you should also pay attention to the crankshaft.

Alternator belts have a great impact on the safety of both passengers and the driver. It is better to replace them immediately in the car. This part is constantly exposed to chemical and mechanical stress, and its wear can greatly affect the torque. For tuning the engine by replacing the alternator belt, any one with a fabric coating is suitable, which can withstand all chemical and mechanical loads, and also improves torque.

The VAZ 2102 car was equipped with carburetor engines, the volume of which ranged from 1.2 to 1.5 liters. The power of such engines did not exceed 100 horsepower. This engine power is considered to be significantly small. This directly affects the speed of the car.

You can remake the carburetor with your own hands as follows:

• Removing the spring in the vacuum throttle actuator will increase the speed, but will slightly increase fuel consumption.
• In place of the primary chamber diffuser with a value of 3.5, put a diffuser marked 4.5. You can change the acceleration pump nozzle rating from 30 to 40.
• The main fuel jet in the primary chamber is replaced with 125, the air jet with 150. If after replacement the speed does not suit the tuner, you can change the jets to higher values.

You can also enhance the dynamics of the VAZ-2102 by installing two carburetors or changes in the fuel system. To implement such modifications, intake manifolds from the Oka car and identical Ozone carburetors are used. The photo shows an example of two carburetors installed.

Tuning the ignition system will also help improve dynamics. To carry out changes in the ignition system, the contact distributor is replaced with a non-contact one, where it is necessary to install the accompanying elements: switch, spark plugs, wiring. This change will lead to trouble-free operation of the ignition system and will create easier starting.

When modifying a carburetor to a modern level, you should not ignore the block head. It involves eliminating interfering protrusions in the fuel inlet and gas outlet channels. Thanks to grinding, the patency of the canals expands. One of the actions to change the cylinder head is to grind the channels.

It’s a good idea to equip the cylinder head with a sports camshaft. At the same time, you need to install stiff springs that will not allow the valves to hang. Tuning the power unit is aimed at increasing its volume, which can be increased in the following ways:

• change in cylinder diameter;
• replacing the crankshaft.

One of the modern methods of tuning a VAZ-2102 is to install a turbocharger, but this is an expensive procedure that can cost about 70,000 rubles.

Zhiguli. Start

The car with certain modifications was produced from 1970 (then production of the VAZ 2101 started) until September 17, 2012, when the VAZ 2107 sedan was discontinued. Body tuning begins with control measurements of the main parts of the Lada. Using a tape measure, measure the distance between the fixation points of the components and assemblies of the car chassis.

Using control points on the body floor, the correct fixation of the floor elements is checked. In this case, components and other assemblies are not dismantled. In the process of modernizing the VAZ 2102 body, the following parameters must be taken into account:

• the diagonal dimensions of the rear doors are 983 mm, and the front doors are 1273 mm;
• from the center of the lock latch to the fixed hinge, a distance of 889 mm is maintained, to the rear - 819 mm;
• the distance from the corner of the rear door to the center of the lock retainer is 863 mm, from the front door - 926 mm;
• A distance of 1397 mm is maintained between the door B pillars.

Painting work

The next step is to paint the body. It is recommended to first clean the metal of old paint. To do this, use sandpaper. For sanding large areas, use a grinder with an appropriate disc. An aggressive solvent is used to remove old paintwork.

Body painting

The next stage involves puttingtying the body. This composition is used to level out small dents. It is recommended to apply the putty in a thin layer. Then a primer is applied to the metal. If the part does not require painting, then auto mechanics advise using a paper stencil. It is cut out yourself.

White spirit is used to degrease the body. If the surface is treated, then it will need to be wiped with a dry and clean cloth. Car paint can be purchased at a specialty store. In this case, experts advise checking that the selected shade matches the color of the car, which is indicated in the technical passport of the VAZ 2102.

If, when upgrading the body, it is not possible to install a new part, then the deformed surface will need to be restored. To perform high-quality welding of the VAZ 2102 body, you will need to have some experience working with welding equipment.

To repair a deformed surface, various methods are used, including heat treatment. Using this technique, the metal is heated to a temperature of 650 °C. To prevent the part from deforming, the diameter of the heated spot should be 3 cm. Gas welding is used to heat the body. The burner moves from the periphery to the central part of the part. At the same time, the problem area is leveled until an even coating is obtained. This type of work is done using a hammer.

If the deformed surface is repaired mechanically, then a mandrel and rubber, wooden, or metal hammers will be required. You can fill the dent with a special quick-hardening compound - putty or solder.

Thresholds, fenders, front panel under the bumper and other areas of the body can be restored using resistance welding. This tool is used to weld a new part. Resistance welding is characterized by rapid welding of elements and prevention of surface deformation.

But the suspension underwent a complete redesign; Daniil independently designed and assembled an air suspension in order to be able to “drop” the car onto the road. It’s funny, but in the new suspension there was a place for parts from both Land Rover and the Kirovets tractor. All non-standard parts were carefully hidden from prying eyes, and the pneumatic control panel was hidden between the front seats. The Sony audio system with Kick amplifier is installed in a similar way, new components are installed in the glove compartment, and the knobs of the original radio are responsible for controlling the music!

Aquamarine past

The exterior decor of the VAZ-2102 “Aquamarine” also complies with the rules of “resto cal”, albeit not in the Californian, but in the Moscow edition. Daniil managed to find narrow rims from an export modification of the VAZ-2101. After painting it in body color, 155/65 R13 tires were put on the front wheels, standard 170/70 R13 on the rear wheels, both front and rear with whitewalls and original metal caps. A unique trunk appeared on the roof of the car - in the USSR, the factory top trunk was offered only for sedans; apparently, it was assumed that the size of the two-room apartment would be enough to accommodate all the luggage. But that didn’t stop Daniil: 12 m of steel pipes, electric welding, priming, painting - and that’s it, the roof of the station wagon was decorated with an openwork design in the style of the 1970s!

Opponents of the culture of lowered cars often argue that after reducing the ground clearance, the car becomes “not allowed to travel”, suitable for use exclusively in urban conditions. The aquamarine “kopeck piece” breaks this stereotype completely: behind its back (that is, in the trunk) are trips to Belarus and Russia. From Vladimir, Daniil and his VAZ-2102 “Aquamarine” brought victory to the Tuning Car Awards'2014 in the category “Best external tuning of a domestic car.” Daniil does not plan to stop there: in his opinion, tuning cannot be completed, it can only be stopped, so you can be sure that these are not the last awards in the treasury of the turquoise “kopeck piece”.

By the way, in the future she will have some kind of return to her roots, but not to the Soviet, and not even to the Italian, but. to the Californian ones: Daniil is interested in kitesurfing and wakeboarding and plans to turn the car into a surf wagon: there will be a surfboard on the top trunk, and a barrel air conditioner on one of the windows. First of all, the CV joint has a service life twice as long as standard factory parts. The problem with the transported goods is solved immediately, and vibration, which caused discomfort to the driver and spoiled the parts, disappears.

It’s hard to imagine a Zaporozhets sports car, but the Belarusian craftsmen did it. This sporty version of the ZAZ-968 model was obtained by “crossing” it with a Porsche Boxster S. The result of the tuning was a full-fledged convertible with characteristic original headlights from the Soviet legend, along with rear lights. The car is also equipped with a soft folding roof. The problem is solved by heating the mirrors. When carrying out tuning, it is necessary to pay attention to the safety cage. It is assembled inside the VAZ-2102 interior and attached to the body. You can install a complex structure made of pipes on the “two”, like in racing cars, but this will cost about 60,000-80,000 rubles.

It is best to replace the instrument panel with a “foreign-made” one, but it will need to be changed to the dimensions of the VAZ. You can change the appearance without replacing the standard bumpers, namely by gluing on a vinyl or chrome film. Of the additional decor, only parts from old Volkswagen catalogs were used: roof rack, fog lights, sun visors, etc. A characteristic feature of the modified cars was the negative camber of the rear wheels: thanks to the rear torsion bar suspension, the wheels literally became a “house”. The new style was called resto Cal, where resto is a hint at the complete restoration of the body, and Cal is another reference to the birthplace of the new trend, the state of California.
