The Soviet SUV more than once made drivers think about the fuel consumption of the UAZ “Bukhanka” 409 per 100 km. The famous UAZ “Bukhanka” was released in 1965 at an automobile plant in Ulyanovsk, Russia. Then its mass production began, the assembly of which has not stopped to this day. In Soviet times, this SUV was one of the most common, and today it is the oldest Russian car in terms of the total number of years of production. Now we’ll figure out what engine the UAZ Bukhanka had on board.
The UAZ is a cargo-passenger version with two axles and all-wheel drive.
The car was originally designed for easy driving on difficult roads, adapted to our operating conditions and is one of the most affordable options for buyers. The name UAZ was chosen due to its resemblance to a loaf of bread.

UAZ Bukhanka engine: characteristics, malfunctions and tuning
In 2021, the Ulyanovsk plant announced another update to a time-tested car (UAZ 3909, etc.). During the time that has passed since the release of the first UAZ 451 M, various drive units of both the Ulyanovsk (UMZ) and Zavolzhsky (ZMZ) motor plants were installed on these cars. It is believed that the base engine of the UAZ Bukhanka is the UMZ 421 gasoline engine, various modifications of which (carburetor and injector) are still produced.
UAZ 452 (Loaf) is one of the oldest cars, various modifications of which are still produced by the Ulyanovsk Automobile Plant. On the basis of this all-wheel drive minibus, widely known as the “Loaf” or “tabletka” (military ambulance), mass production of which began in 1965 (UAZ 451M), many different modifications were developed. It has been modernized several times and is still produced in a modernized form (UAZ 2206).

Engine tuning options
To increase engine capacity, car owners replace domestic engines with more powerful imported analogues. At the same time, endurance increases and vehicle handling improves.
However, the cost of such tuning turns out to be too high. Cheaper improvement options are often chosen:
- Chipping. ZMZ is equipped with a standard control unit that can be reprogrammed. Special software improves the unit’s parameters, making the motor more powerful.
- Installation of a compressor or turbocharger. Such equipment is less expensive. The power of a turbo engine increases on average by 30%.
Tuning must be done by specialists. It is not recommended to modify the internal combustion engine on your own.

Gearboxes and axles must be matched by gear ratios to a diesel engine. FOR COMPLETE HAPPINESS.
I would like specifics and not just words
Gear ratios in axles should be within 3.4. Here are the specifics, you can’t bypass physics, isn’t it easier to change the car?
Hello! My friend has a Mercedes MV 100. His tray fits well, but he needs to make an adapter plate. And ANDORIA fits 1v1 with the box, but there is a problem - all the threads are inch.
Is Ndoria Austria or Bulgaria?
Andoria is England. That's why the threads are inch. And the Poles have Lublin and Zhuk cars; they used to have GAZ 21 engines installed on them, and they made their own gearbox. Then they took a license from Andoria and put these engines under their own box, which was mated to the GAZ 21.
Engine ZMZ-409
ZMZ 409 is an injection gasoline engine with 4 cylinders in a row and 16 valves. The injection system of the 409 engine is controlled by a microprocessor electronic unit. This engine went into production in 1996. This engine is mainly installed on new and modern domestic UAZ and GAZ cars. All generations of these power plants are equipped with a gas neutralizer and fully comply with EURO-2 standards.

In 2005, the contract between Zavolsky Motor expired and was not renewed, and the plant became part of the Sollers holding.
History of the creation of ZMZ 409
The first copies of this engine were produced in 1996. ZMZ 409 is an improvement and development of the 406 engine model. To obtain a more powerful and dynamic engine on the ZMZ 405, the diameter of the cylinder block was increased to 95.5 mm, which made it possible to obtain an engine cylinder volume of 2465 cm3.
At ZMZ 409 they went even further; the volume of this engine was increased to 2.7 liters. This can be achieved by making some structural changes. In addition, the cylinder block remained unchanged; it was taken from the ZMZ 405. And in order to obtain a larger volume, the piston stroke distance could be increased. This was made possible by installing a new crankshaft with larger connecting rods and a different piston design. Connecting rods with the same characteristics were used.
The pistons have been slightly modified. The pin hole has been moved upward, giving an additional 4mm of piston stroke and 7mm of additional crank radius. All these measures made it possible to make the piston stroke 94 mm, instead of the previous 86 mm.
Swap options UAZ Hunter
The following engines are installed on this car:
- 2JZ GE. The uniqueness of this model is its high power - 200 hp. With. – with a small volume of 2.5 liters. Economical unit thanks to VVT-i valve timing.
- 1UZ FE. Four-liter engine with 300 horsepower. With. For several years in a row it was included in the top ten best engines of the year.
- 5VZ-FE. Six-cylinder V-shaped engines with a capacity of 190 hp. With. More reliable than the previous generation 3VZ.
A gearbox with a transfer case from a Toyota Hilux Surf is installed as an automatic transmission. It goes well with the listed motors. A problem when joining them can only arise with the secondary shaft. You can replace it, but to do this you will have to disassemble the box. There is a simpler solution: cut off the excess connection from the secondary shaft, and everything will fall into place.
This box is longer than the domestic one, so the angle at the rear propeller shaft is incorrect. Car enthusiasts have to solve this problem by moving the engine and adjusting the axles. To avoid such problems, it is better to order a UAZ Hunter SWAP from professionals.
Malfunctions of ZMZ 409
The main problems of the 409th UAZ Bukhanka engine are similar to the problems of the 406th engine, since their design is very similar.
Eats butter
The reason lies in the valve seals and oil rings. In addition, a gap in the labyrinth oil slinger can cause oil consumption. If this happens, remove the cover and seal the crack with sealant.
Engine UAZ Bukhanka
As a rule, it is the hydraulic compensators that knock. They may need to be replaced after 50,000 km. Also, knocking can be caused by connecting rods, pistons and other components - in this case, the cause should be sought at the station.
Overheat
This is usually caused by a clogged radiator and thermostat. Lack of antifreeze may also be the cause. If everything is normal, look for an air lock.
Engine UMZ 421
The UMZ-421 engine replaced the 417 engine, which turned out to be a reliable and simple engine. Model 421 has an original aluminum frame design, which is filled with dry liners with thin iron walls. This made it possible to increase the cross-section of the chambers to 100 mm and leave the same size between the cylinders of 116 mm. This decision had a positive effect on service life, as rigidity was increased and the tendency of the cylinders to become “oval” during operation was reduced.

Advantages of diesel over gasoline engines
Today, the biggest advantage of a diesel engine over a gasoline engine is its efficiency. Not only is the cost of diesel fuel much less than gasoline, but the engine itself is used in economical mode. The reason for this is the different operating patterns for different fuels.
In short, a diesel engine has the following advantages over a gasoline engine:
• low fuel cost (by 10-15%);
• low fuel consumption (30-40%);
• the absence of an ignition system makes the engine design simpler, easier to operate, and it also provides good traction at low speeds;
• more massive parts are held together more rigidly, and therefore the engine can withstand longer without major repairs (up to 1 million kilometers);
• produces low CO2 emissions, smoke and soot only occur with faulty engines.
Interesting! The diesel engine also has its disadvantages. It takes longer to warm up, and with a manual transmission you have to shift it more often. Low-quality fuel quickly damages the injectors, and maintenance costs 15-20% more than gasoline.

Once again about the UAZ “Patriot”
It is worth noting that at the moment the Patriot engine line includes a ZMZ 409.10 naturally aspirated gasoline engine, the volume of which is 2.7 liters and the power reaches 135 horsepower. This is at 4,600 rpm. In this case, the peak torque is estimated at 217 Newtons per meter at 3,900 rpm. The same engine is installed on the UAZ Hunter. It's not bad at all, but for a heavy Patriot there's definitely not enough traction at low speeds.
The next option is the ZMZ 51432 diesel, the lowest thrust is slightly better here. On bad roads and snow cover, the Patriot with this diesel engine somehow moves at 1st reduced speed, and if you install large wheels and a bunch of other elements, it practically loses the ability to move normally off-road.
