We replace the VAZ 2114 heater radiator with our own hands: instructions and nuances

Design and operation diagram of the interior heater of the VAZ 2114

During the cold season, the interior of the VAZ 2114 car is heated using a heater or stove. The basis of the stove is the radiator. Using a system of air ducts and dampers, the heat from it is directed to different areas of the cabin. This creates a microclimate that prevents the glass from freezing and provides comfortable conditions for the driver.

The stove in a VAZ 2114 car works on a fairly simple principle.

The heater operation scheme is quite simple. The heat source is a running engine, for cooling of which a special liquid is used - antifreeze. When the antifreeze moves in a vicious circle, heat is transferred from the hot motor to the cooling zones. There are two such zones in a passenger car - these are the radiators of the engine cooling system and the heater. Hot antifreeze transfers heat to cold air, which circulates through the radiator honeycombs using fans. Thus, the antifreeze cools down and returns to the engine, where it heats up again. This process must be continuous while the engine is running.

THE INTERIOR OF THE VAZ 2114 DOES NOT WARM UP

Often, car owners with front-wheel drive VAZs are faced with a problem when, in the cold season, the car interior is poorly heated and does not warm up. What could be the reason for this? Possible reasons:

  • An air lock that has formed in the cooling system;
  • Heater motor that refused to work;
  • The thermostat located in the engine cooling system does not provide the desired temperature;
  • A stove faucet that is closed or not fully open. Perhaps it has simply turned sour and does not open - it happens often;
  • Burnt out cylinder head gasket. But in this case, antifreeze will leave the engine cooling system and the engine will overheat;
  • Stove radiator. It is clogged and does not let warm air into the cabin;
  • Air dampers on the instrument panel or their drive (cables).

Design and reasons for replacing the stove radiator

The VAZ 2114 stove radiator has a simple but durable design. Its core consists of two rows of aluminum tubes and transverse thin metal plates that form a honeycomb. This ensures heat accumulation in the core. The ends of the tubes are flared in end plates and sealed with special materials. This ensures a tight fit of the mating surfaces. Three plastic tanks are welded to the ends of the core. Two tanks on one side are connected to the cooling system, and the third - on the opposite side - circulates antifreeze in the radiator.

The service life of the heater radiator is noticeably less than the service life of the car. Usually tubes, pipes, tanks begin to leak, or the core becomes clogged. For the VAZ 2114, heater radiators manufactured by DAAZ, Luzar, Pramo, Fenox, etc. are suitable, each of which has its own advantages and disadvantages.

Sequence of actions when replacing the Lada Granta heater radiator

Note to the driver!

There are two ways to dismantle the heater radiator on a Lada Grant: according to the instruction manual and the “folk method”. Let's look at each with a specific example.

  1. We place the car within the perimeter of the repair area, turn off the engine, and open the hood. We provide priority safety measures.
  2. After the engine has cooled down, we proceed to dismantling the heating system on the Lada Grant without a condenser.

Choosing a new heater radiator

New cars of the VAZ family are equipped with heat exchangers from the Dimitrovgrad Automotive Component Plant. Their production uses technology from the French company VALEO (SOFICA).

The original heater radiator produced by DAAZ has small honeycombs

When purchasing a new radiator, the first things to consider are:

  • frequency of installation of transverse plates;
  • strength and rigidity of the plates;
  • the presence of plastic swirlers in round aluminum tubes.

DAAZ radiators differ from their analogues in their tiny honeycombs, in which the transverse plates are located at a very small distance from each other. Due to this, the air remains in contact with the core for a long time and heats up more. The high rigidity of the plates does not allow them to deform under light impacts.

Method No. 2: replacing the Lada Granta heater radiator without removing the panel

  1. Unscrew the expansion tank cap and release the pressure in the system.

Expansion tank plug

  1. We unscrew the plug in the cylinder block and grind the antifreeze into a plastic container.

  1. We disconnect the block with wires from the pedal unit: brake, accelerator, clutch.

  1. In the engine compartment, turn off the mass air flow sensor.

Mass air flow sensor

  1. We saw off the upper and lower pipes of the heat exchanger.

  1. We recess the pedal module and remove the heater from its original place.

  1. We clean the seat and blow out the cavity.
  2. We install the new radiator in its original place.

  1. We install pipes - connectors.

  1. Fill in 8.0 liters of pure antifreeze. We start the engine and check the system for leaks.

The process of replacing the radiator of a Lada Granta stove with air conditioning is similar to that described above.

Is it better to do it yourself or contact a service station?

Considering the simplicity of the process, replace the radiator yourself. If necessary, additionally read the recommendations outlined in the article, watch video tutorials, and get advice from specialists.

Undocumented capabilities of the Lada Granta heater

Unlike a number of other foreign cars, the Lada Grant has only four heater control switching modes. For example, there are six of them in Audi and Opel.

The air supply lines are connected in such a way that the windshield is heated at any position of the regulator. There is no such option in domestic transport.

In winter, when the air conditioning is activated, most of the air is automatically directed to the feet, in summer to the windshield for blowing. In Grant the flow is of the same type.

In order to warm up the side windows on the Lada Grant as quickly as possible in winter, you need to redirect the deflectors towards the glass. After the glass has thawed, we move the deflectors to their normal position.

The second speed mode of the regulator is not enough - we transfer it to the third to speed up the frequency.

According to the recommendations in the operating instructions, it is necessary to dismantle the heater when the dashboard is disassembled. However, the method is not as effective as the one presented above.

HEATER RADIATOR

If it turns out that the heater radiator on a VAZ 2114 needs to be replaced, first of all you need to find out where it is and how to get to it. The heater radiator on the VAZ 2114 is located below the instrument panel on the right passenger side in the car interior. The design of the model 2114 stove is fundamentally no different from the heating system diagram of any other car. The VAZ 2114 stove consists of the following elements (stove diagram):

  1. Main body (the radiator and heater motor are mounted on it);
  2. Motor (located on top of the body, dismantled from above, from the engine compartment);
  3. Two pipes;
  4. Air ducts. They are located along the entire length of the instrument panel. There are also air ducts in the lower part, they are needed to heat the feet of front and rear passengers;
  5. Heater radiator;
  6. Stove tap.

Heater tap
The heater radiator is relatively inexpensive, prices depend on the manufacturer and region of sale. In addition, the parts differ in the material of manufacture, that is, they can be copper (brass) and aluminum. A copper radiator is more expensive (ranging from 1400-2000 rubles), and it is believed that it has the following advantages:

  • Greater heat transfer (that is, it will be warmer in the cabin);
  • Maintainability (it is possible to solder it if a coolant leak is detected).

An aluminum radiator is cheaper (700-1000 rubles) and does not transfer heat to the interior as efficiently. But this is only in theory. If you go to car enthusiast forums on the Internet, you can “hear” from users the opinion that copper is actually less effective. In fact, it turns out that the copper stove practically does not heat the engine at idle speed, and at these speeds the car has to work quite a lot in winter.

Among the manufacturers of VAZ radiators it is worth noting:

  • Copper products – OR LLC (Orenburg) and SHAAZ;
  • Brass - DAAZ, LUZAR and KRAFT.

A new radiator should be chosen carefully, since replacing it is quite labor-intensive for a car enthusiast.

Moreover, if you perform this procedure yourself for the first time, it will seem long and tedious to you. Car repair shops charge from 1,500 to 2,000 rubles on average for replacing a radiator and do the work quite quickly.

When purchasing spare parts, there is always a risk of buying a fake. To avoid such a purchase, you should adhere to certain rules:

  1. Do not buy a product whose price is suspiciously low;
  2. Ask sellers for a certificate for the product;
  3. Try to purchase spare parts in original packaging.

Buy goods from well-known manufacturers (in packaging with documents).
If the product is suspicious, you can always refuse it. Now there is no shortage of spare parts for the VAZ 2114; if in doubt, it is better to buy a heater radiator elsewhere.

VAZ 2114 heater radiator replacement

With the onset of cold weather, the interiors of BAZ 2114 cars begin to be heated using a heater or stove. The basis of the heating system is the radiator. Thanks to air ducts and dampers, warm air masses from it spread throughout all areas of the car's interior. Ultimately, a certain microclimate arises that prevents the formation of ice on the glass, which provides favorable driving conditions.

The essence of the heater’s operation is quite primitive and understandable. The heat source is the engine, and to cool it, the presence of antifreeze/antifreeze is important. When coolant moves through a confined space, heat transfer occurs from the heated internal combustion engine to cooling areas. If we consider passenger cars specifically, then we will talk about two such zones - the radiator of the internal combustion engine cooling system and the heater . Heated antifreeze/antifreeze is able to transfer heat to the cold air space, which, in turn, begins to circulate through the radiator honeycombs using fans. Once the fluid cools, it returns to the engine where it reheats. This process must occur continuously.

The heater radiator of the BAZ 2114 car has a simple but very durable design. In its central part there are two rows of aluminum tubes and transverse metal plates, which form a honeycomb. Thanks to this structure, favorable conditions are created for the accumulation of heat in the core. The ends of the tubes are tightly sealed. In addition, 3 plastic tanks were welded to the ends of the core. The first two tanks are connected to the cooling system, and the last one, the one on the other side, is responsible for the circulation of antifreeze in the radiator.

Often, VAZ owners feel completely indignant that with the arrival of cold weather, the interior of the car begins to be poorly heated and does not warm up at all.

As noted earlier, the VAZ 2114 heater system includes a radiator, pipes, and taps. After the next start of the engine, that is, after the pump starts operating, the coolant begins to actively circulate. Roughly speaking, the heater is tightly integrated into the engine cooling system.

Of course, any malfunction of the cooling system, like the stove, causes the engine to overheat. It is important to note that this kind of difficulty often causes a decrease in driving comfort, and there is also a lack of safety, because the windows begin to fog up or ice begins to form.

  1. Air pockets formed in the cooling system.
  2. The heater motor has failed.
  3. The thermostat located in the cooling system is not capable of generating the required temperature.
  4. Closed or not fully open position of the stove tap. There is a possibility that the reason is oxidation; this happens quite often.
  5. The cylinder head gasket has blown. However, in this situation, antifreeze will leak from the cooling system, which will affect the engine overheating.
  6. A clogged heater radiator, preventing heat from penetrating into the car interior.
