This car has many fans. Those who purchased the Audi A1 model fall in love with it at first sight. So why not make it a little more attractive and individual? Our store offers a wide selection of parts for tuning the Audi A1, which will allow you to stand out from the crowd of cars on the streets.

Exhaust system tuning

Special solutions for tuning the A8 exhaust system were first offered on the market by leading tuning studios as part of car tuning kits. Despite the fact that car owners place their main bet in A8 tuning on the external transformation of the car, replacing the exhaust system or its individual elements is a fairly popular option for its modification. Comprehensive modification of the system to a sports type, installation of a sports muffler, changing the “voice” of the exhaust, wiring the system on 2 sides or a simpler solution in the form of installing chrome pipes are the main options for tuning the A8 exhaust system.

Five things people love and hate about the Audi A8 (D2)

The base has front-wheel drive, the luxury has all-wheel drive, and even an aluminum body - this was seen on futuristic concepts in the mid-1990s, but not on a conservative executive class sedan. Audi took a risk - and the risk paid off. It was produced from 1994 to 2002 with two restylings in 1998 and 2001. We have already studied the experience of owning an Audi A8 D2 , analyzed in detail its problems with the body, electrical and suspension , and also talked about power units . And now it’s time to find out why they love her and why they hate her.

Hate #5: “half” gas tank

The gas tank volume of the first generation A8 is 80-90 liters (depending on the modification), but has a complex shape that divides this volume into two parts. A single pump is designed to pump out fuel from both parts, but it does this only under conditions of tightness and absence of contamination, which conditions are, of course, violated over many years of operation. The repair is complex and involves possible breakdowns due to negligence, and without it, the fuel system loses the function of pumping fuel from one half of the tank to the other. So many older cars only use half the tank capacity.

Love #5: cross-country ability of all-wheel drive versions

It’s unlikely that the authors of the legendary Quattro all-wheel drive system considered this aspect as one of the main advantages of the A8 - it’s more about handling than cross-country ability - but among Russian users, the Quattro versions acquired their value largely thanks to this. Some don’t even skimp on phrases like “yes, you can drive it everywhere.” We don’t recommend checking it, but it’s a fact that in winter conditions or a rain-soaked country road, you feel more confident in an all-wheel drive sedan.

Hate #4: age-related problems with automatic transmissions

Problems with automatic transmissions are most often problems of careless operation and unscrupulous repairs; in general, the A8 D2’s transmissions are reliable. But nothing lasts forever - solenoids, bearings, overrunning clutches, the oil pump and the gas turbine engine blocking lining wear out, the valve body becomes dirty, and the clutches burn. While the car was being produced, problematic parts evolved and became stronger, so it is much more profitable to buy a car with an already repaired gearbox. Because repairs cost tens and tens of thousands of rubles.

Love #4: timeless aluminum body

The Audi A8 we are talking about today is the world's first mass-produced car with an all-aluminum body. Yes, there is electrochemical corrosion in places where aluminum interacts with other metals, and there are other problems such as moisture accumulation and difficulties with body repairs and painting, but the body is truly devoid of rust in the usual sense. And it really can be eternal - subject to a number of rules (read the details in the links above).

Hate #3: “delicate” pendant

The multi-link aluminum suspension gave the first Ingolstadt G8 an excellent combination of handling, stability and comfort, but it is complex, not optimal in design and too delicate for Russian conditions. It is most often replaced assembled or in large parts, otherwise there is no particular point, and not with original spare parts, but with analogues of different quality. With proper repair, the restored suspension runs on our roads for about 100,000 kilometers. But it has to be lucky.

Love #3: good dynamics

The lightweight aluminum body made it possible to install engines more modestly and lighter than those of competitors, and at the same time have comparable dynamics - with the stock 2.8-liter V6, the five-meter monowheel car had a total weight of 2,100 kg and drove the “hundredth” in 9.1 seconds. The same body made it possible to compensate for the weight of rather large V8 and all-wheel drive systems, which also affected the dynamics - the A8 D2 “at maximum speed” performed the standard exercise in 5.4 seconds. Of course, today’s life-worn “avosecs” don’t have the same dynamics, but well-preserved examples still capture the spirit of their owners.

Hate #2: “glitches” of electrical and electronics

The body is slightly susceptible to corrosion, but the same cannot be said about the electrics - over time, the electrical wiring floods (paradoxically, but, in particular, precisely because aluminum perfectly holds back water, and does not allow it to leak out through holes of through corrosion), engine control units, valves climate control, seat memory, electric mirrors, anti-theft. For the same reason, the taillights, navigation, and audio system fail. To keep all these auxiliary systems in working order, you will need your own well-qualified electrician.

Love #2: controllability

This love stems partly from the lightness and rigidity of the aluminum body, partly from the suspension characteristics, and partly from the advantages of Quattro all-wheel drive. The front of the car is not overweight with a large engine (if we talk about V6 versions), the car as a whole has a fairly low center of gravity, so it stands perfectly in a high-speed arc (even in a simple front-wheel drive version), and in a straight line it demonstrates exemplary stability. These are the injections that at one time turned out to be especially sensitive for Mercedes-Benz and BMW.

Hate #1: It's expensive

Over time, requests for a car change, and if its advantages, as a rule, remain the same, then the disadvantages become completely different over time. It is impossible to measure a used premium-segment foreign car in the same categories as, for example, a simpler one comparable in price, but a new Xray - in the old A8 you don’t care that the interior is finished a little cheaper than in the Mercedes-Benz S-Class W140 . And there may be only a few age-related problems, but the cost of fixing them calls into question the very point of owning a car. In the case of the first-generation Audi A8, the costs of maintenance, repairs, gas and taxes (especially for V8 versions) will force you to either fork out a lot or make your A8 not a car for every day.

Pictured: Audi A8 (D2) '1994–2002

Love #1: comfort

One can endlessly argue about whether the “string bag” of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class W140 or the BMW 7 E38 has become equal (or has outperformed), but it definitely marked the very revival of Audi, its entry into a new segment and turned the big German two into three - the three as we know it now. In some ways this car fell short of the standards, in others it surpassed them. But today it is highly valued precisely for its comfort: interior trim (from velor to leather), “holding” seats, spacious interior and trunk, excellent standard “music”, noise and vibration insulation, stability at high speeds - a whole range of qualities that largely determines the character of the car. And today he makes it a majestic monument to itself. Even if it requires scrupulous care.

Tuning the technical part of the Audi A4 B5

Engine

The Audi A4 B5 engine is one of the most common tuning objects. Engine tuning can be divided into two types. The first option is to change the firmware. This process can usually be handled by the owner himself (with the exception of creating an upgraded firmware). To do this, connect a laptop to the diagnostic connector, on which a special program is installed. There are many of these programs. There are ones for specific cars, most of them are universal. Examples: ECM Titanium, ChipExplorer, ECUSafe, ELMConfig, Galletto.

Using such a program, the firmware of the ECU (electronic control unit) of the Audi A4 B5 is downloaded, given to specialists for modernization, and then, using the same program, the firmware is “uploaded” back instead of the standard one.
As a result, the owner receives improved performance of the power plant. The advantage is that no special knowledge is required in the design of the engine and car, as well as the ability to get quick results. By the way, many ready-made firmware for the Audi A4 B5 can be bought on the Internet. The disadvantage of this method is the limited tuning possibilities. After all, without upgrading the exhaust system, fuel supply, and cooling, it will not be possible to obtain a serious increase in engine power. As for tuning the Audi A4 B5 power plant with modernization of the “iron” part, most owners cannot cope with this on their own. You will have to resort to the help of specialized studios and car services.

Here we can only note that the 1.8-liter turbocharged engine in the Audi A4 B5, which was installed before restyling, “responds” best to tuning and gives the best results. At least, this is what car owners note in their reviews. Good results are also obtained from tuning A4 B5 turbocharged diesel engines. But with naturally aspirated engines the increase in horsepower is so small that there is no point in tuning these engines.

Transmission

Tuning the Audi A4 B5 transmission in all cases represents a physical intervention. From what car owners write in reviews, we can conclude the following. Most often, transmission modernization comes down to purchasing and replacing the following components:

  • Differential with increased resistance to friction (240─260 tr);
  • Short-stroke slide (5─7 t.r.);
  • Lightweight flywheel (35─40 t.r.);
  • Reinforced clutch kit (50─60 tr.).

The price in brackets is as of January 2021 in various online stores. As you can see, tuning the Audi A4 B5 transmission is not a cheap pleasure.

Suspension

Tuning the chassis usually comes down to replacing the standard suspension with an adjustable screw suspension with lowering. The cost of such kits greatly depends on the manufacturer. In online stores, prices range from 25 to 80 thousand rubles per set.

In reviews of Audi A4 B5 owners, you can also find messages about replacing the rubber silent blocks of the front arms and rear stabilizer bushings with polyurethane ones. There are ongoing debates about the benefits of such a replacement, but there are many who are satisfied with such tuning. The issue price is about 4 thousand rubles.

Brakes and wheels

When tuning Audi A4 B5 wheels (as well as other cars), wheel spacers with a thickness of 3 millimeters to 4 centimeters are often used. The cost of high-quality copies from reputable manufacturers can reach up to 4-5 thousand rubles.

Wheel spacers are often used when installing exclusive wheels that are designed for a larger offset or non-standard distance between the studs.

The spacers are attached to the hub, and then, using the bolts included in the kit, the discs themselves are installed. Spacers can also be useful when tuning the Audi A4 B5 body. For example, when expanding the wheel arches. The appearance is excellent, but do not forget about safety in the pursuit of beauty. Here the quality of wheel spacers is of great importance, since their installation leads to a redistribution of the calculated loads on the axle and suspension elements.

One of the most common options for tuning the brake system of the Audi A4 B5 is replacing the front and rear brake discs with perforated ones. The cost ranges from 3 to 6 thousand rubles. Those who are not strapped for money install sports brakes on the Audi A4 B5 instead of the standard ones. The kit includes drilled brake discs with an aluminum hub to improve heat dissipation, reinforced 6-piston calipers, pads, brake hoses and all necessary hardware. However, the price of such sports brakes is sad - up to 120-150 thousand rubles. Nowadays you can easily find such kits made to order.
