Geometry improvement work

Due to the low engine efficiency and low wear resistance, mechanical tuning of the Niva 4x4 engine is almost mandatory. Such work is called work to change the geometry of the power plant. You should start modifying the power plant by upgrading the carburetor. We do the following:

There are minimal updates inside the car. The lack of significant changes is explained by the desire of engineers to prevent an increase in price, but, as practice has shown, this is not the case in reality.

The salon can be characterized by the following changes:

  1. A new steering wheel has been installed.
  2. The material of the seat upholstery has changed. Fabric base with individual design. There is slight lateral support - comfortable conditions are provided not only for the driver, but also for passengers.
  3. The back row of seats remained almost unchanged. This is a solid sofa designed for three passengers. Can be folded, thereby increasing the volume of the luggage compartment. Folding it to create a flat floor will not work, but if you need to maximize the usable space, you can completely remove the rear seats.
  4. Between the front seats there is a tunnel where the transfer case and gearbox shift lever and the parking brake handle are located. Plastic cup holders also appeared.
  5. The standard radio is not much different from those that were installed before. Structurally simple with minimal indication.

The interior design is simple, cheap plastic is used. The instrument panel has the usual angular shape, and the overall build quality is not at a high level.

Separately, it is worth noting the operation of heated front seats (not in all trim levels) and air conditioning. In the first case, it is too much heating, which brings rather discomfort, and in the second, it is the ineffectiveness of the air conditioner, which is not surprising given the frankly weak engine. Another drawback is that the engineers never achieved full opening of the windows.

How to install bumpers on a Lada 4×4 Urban at the factory

You will need to buy a body kit or in parts. Part numbers:

Interior and luggage compartment

Now it’s worth looking inside to understand what the difference is between the Niva 2121 and Niva Urban SUVs, and whether there is any at all.

Inside the classic Niva, everything is outrageously simple. But since we are talking about a utilitarian car that is a workhorse and a tool for overcoming bad roads, buyers pay little attention to the interior.

The interior is dominated by cheap materials and extremely hard plastic. To the surprise of many, the chairs are enclosed in a fabric that is pleasant to the touch. The assembly is far from ideal, since there are gaps and cracks everywhere. This is definitely an interior that does not belong to 21st century cars.

A kit from Samara 2nd generation is used as a dashboard. The information content is quite good. The center console offers a minimum of buttons and controls. But even with such space, the engineers managed to make a serious mistake. For some reason they decided that it was better to place the ignition switch on the left, and not on the right, of the steering column. And they put an emergency button in the usual place of the lock. Brilliant, needless to say.

The front seats are not impressive in terms of ergonomics, but the level of comfort is not bad. There is no possibility to adjust the steering wheel. The rear sofa itself is uncomfortable, there is no legroom, plus getting to it is problematic. There are also no rear headrests.

There is no significant difference in terms of interior decoration between Niva and Niva Urban. As before, the design is outdated, the dashboard is from the second Samara. But the steering wheel was made smaller in diameter, and the rim increased in thickness. The center console is designed in a minimalist style. On the tunnel near the gearbox there was a transfer case lever for downshifts, as well as a panel with the help of which the windows are controlled and the mirrors are adjusted.

Urban was equipped with front seats from the same 2nd generation Samara. There is no need to talk about any lateral support here. But the profile has become better, and the filler has been made more dense.

Urban's back seat remained cramped and uncomfortable. No one thought to install headrests, which has a negative impact. The finishing materials are cheap, the plastic is hard. Even here they did not change the position of the ignition switch. But there were power window control buttons.

To summarize, we can say that AvtoVAZ did not contribute anything significant or useful in terms of interior design to Urban. The car was poorly assembled and uncomfortable, and remains that way. And this is the main mistake of the manufacturer. Calling the car Urban and positioning it as a city car, it was worth adding a lot more comfort to the interior, installing good seats, and thinking about the rear sofa. There are minor changes against the background of 2121, but they do not make Urban better at all. It's all very sad.

Separately, it is worth dwelling on the issues of luggage compartment. The three-door Niva 2121 has a luggage compartment volume of 265 liters when traveling. If you fold the rear row, the volume increases to 585 liters.

As you might have guessed, there are no changes to the Urban version. These are the same 265 and 585 liters.

And if you look at the five-door modifications, you won’t be able to see the difference here either. Urban, like Niva 2131, has 420 liters in normal condition, or 780 liters with the seats folded.

Set of materials and tools

Before straightening the bumper, it is recommended to assemble the necessary set of tools and materials. Without them, it is simply impossible to align the element. Since every car owner wants to achieve a high level of quality, it is impossible to do without preliminary preparation. Dents can be repaired on plastic bumpers. They can be deformed in the required and controlled direction. And here it is not at all necessary to use expensive and complex equipment. A standard garage bumper straightening kit includes several of the most important components:

  • Hair dryer. Only in the rarest cases, when the bumper is very thin, can you get by with a household hair dryer. But it is still recommended to find a construction model of sufficiently high power. This tool will be useful for heating, which will allow you to subsequently correct the broken geometry of the body element of your car. Powerful construction hair dryers can effectively heat even thick plastic, thereby giving the plastic product the required shape;
  • Boiling water. Very hot water is used for the same purposes as the previously discussed construction hair dryer. In some cases, boiling water can replace power tools. Water with a temperature close to 100 degrees Celsius has a more gentle effect on plastic elements, and therefore it is often used as an alternative to a hair dryer. Boiling water should be prepared directly at the site of restoration work. It will be most convenient to use an electric kettle so that you don’t have to wait long for a new portion of boiling water;
  • Screwdrivers. Take a set of screwdrivers of different sizes. You can replace them with other similar tools that have blunt ends. Here everything depends on the arsenal of tools you have;
  • Gloves. Since the work will have to be done using boiling water and very hot air, which is created by a construction hair dryer, your hands must be protected. To do this, you can use construction or household gloves. The main thing is that they can prevent accidental burns;
  • Magnet. Because a car bumper often includes metal components, a powerful magnet may be required to pull out the warped parts.

Body upgrade

There are many ways to improve the body, and the driver himself chooses the direction of tuning work to give unique qualities to his car.

Headlights and fog lights

The Niva's standard optics quickly fail and require replacement. But such a need can be considered as an opportunity to improve the appearance of the car. It is recommended to install similar lighting devices of higher quality from other manufacturers.

Installing xenon, lens or diode optics radically changes the appearance. Fog lights will organically complement the image of the car and increase the safety of the vehicle.

Exterior of the new SUV

As already said, despite the transition of the model from one brand to another, the “new” Lada Niva did not receive any special external changes. Nevertheless, in order to distinguish the new product from the Shnivy, the designers finalized certain details, modifying them. At the front, the new Lada Niva is distinguished by a new radiator grille, with two horizontal lines of black plastic and now the Lada company logo. Following the grille, changes were made to the front optics. Previously, it was smooth, but now there are bends in the lower part, but this is achieved due to the lining on the front bumper.

To give a modern look to the optics, in some configurations the background can be black. The optics of the Lada Niva are based on lenses and halogen lamps. It would seem that there is nothing new, but the engineers simply decided to maintain reliability, because when driving off-road, the main thing is reliability, and not the pursuit of modern technologies.

Another part of the Lada Niva front that has undergone modernization is the bumper. As before, depending on the configuration, the front bumper can be solid or more modern. Most modifications will still have a modernized version of the bumper, with an additional radiator grille in the center, a pair of round foglights on the sides and plastic engine protection in the center.

Otherwise, the front part remains the same. Recognizable hood and identical windshield. The hood of the SUV, as before, has a raised central part and smooth cuts on the sides. The windshield can be either simple or heated along the entire perimeter. Changes to the front end are spotty and you shouldn’t expect any special design improvements.

From the side, the new Lada Niva SUV has remained virtually unchanged, with the exception of the absence of model markings on the front door, as was the case in the Chevroler Niva. Otherwise there are no improvements. The designers left plastic on the lower part (in regular versions it will be painted in body color, in Off-Road configuration it will be black).

The side mirrors of the Lada Niva were left in the same place, with the same functionality. The standard set includes an electric adjustment drive. Advanced modifications received LED turn signals and heating. Body colors of the Lada Niva are available in 9 shades:

  • bright red;
  • grey-blue-green;
  • silver gray;
  • grey-green;
  • dark grey;
  • black;
  • light silver;
  • dark purple;
  • white.

For the Off-Road configuration, a camouflage body color is also available. In terms of details, it is worth noting the appearance of the Niva nameplate on the right side of the trunk door, and depending on the configuration, there may be a protective cover on the spare wheel.

At first glance, the rear bumper does not stand out with any special details, but if you look closely, a rear view camera and foglights are located on it. Accordingly, the cabin has a display for displaying images from the camera. One more question remains, whether Lada engineers have cured the problem of the Chevrolet Niva regarding the fastening of the spare wheel to the body. As practice has shown, over time, rust appeared from under the fasteners, and there was a possibility of through-rot of the body. The reason for this was poor-quality steel and fasteners of the spare tire holder and trunk door.

The last detail of the Lada Niva’s exterior is the roof. There is no particular variety here, everything is strict and without frills. The new one is made of thicker and, accordingly, durable plastic. However, the plastic itself is softer and easier to process (and scratch). It was produced by Kamplast-T LLC in Tolyatti. By the way, the office has existed since 2002.

There is a mark indicating that the quality control department has passed, but this did not help the grille itself; out of 10 mounting holes, only 1 on the grille and 2 on the fasteners matched). Although, in fairness, it should be noted that it is also impossible to install factory (conveyor) grilles bolt-to-bolt, everything needs to be finished off! The first step is to install the mounting plates.

They even have a hole for a temperature sensor! The only thing is that the mounting holes are drilled narrowly, you will have to modify them with a file.

Let's start modifying the plastic. The hole for the central upper bolt must be moved as high as possible. I just picked it out with an awl and sharpened it with a file (I told you, it’s easy to process!)

We install the grate. Secure with bolts in the center. By the way! The central lower bolt must be installed through the bushing, since there is a cutout at the bottom of the grille, and in the center the plastic does not rest against the body. I just didn’t tighten the bolt, there’s no bushing yet. Now we see that none of the side holes coincide with the holes in the mounting plate. Immediately drill the mounting plates in place with a d3 drill and finally fasten the grille with self-tapping screws.

On the outside of the headlights, on each side, two new holes for fasteners were made in the grille. Self-tapping screw into the body... But on two central and 4 central-side attachment points, the grille holds like a glove! There are no gaps anywhere, so I decided not to make any extra holes in the body. Let's step back and admire the result!

Well what can I say? I like this! The Niva has acquired a more aggressive look. In my opinion, it's worth the money.

The modern version of the Niva, despite the body kits, still remains a compact off-road vehicle with a monocoque body. The dimensions of the car have remained virtually unchanged. Engine and transmission

Electronic fuel injection technology began to be used at AvtoVAZ only in the late nineties, becoming real progress. The engine of the VAZ 2121 and all subsequent modifications with a displacement of 1.7 liters originates from the VAZ 2106 engine with a displacement of 1.3 liters. The Urban version is equipped with a derated power plant with a volume of 1.8 liters and a power of 90 hp. With. It is placed on the subframe along with a new steering rack. According to the engineers, this solution should breathe new life into the Niva. The power supply and ignition systems also underwent changes, which made it possible to increase the volume of the combustion chamber, but fuel consumption decreased slightly. In the case of Niva 2121 and Niva Urban, I want to know what is better in this component. Let's try to find the difference.

Under the hood of Niva 2121

The classic Niva or Lada 4x4 is offered with only one uncontested 1.7-liter engine. This is an inline four with 8 valves. The engine complies with Euro 4 environmental standards and runs on AI-95 gasoline. The engine produces a modest 83 horsepower, and the torque here is 128 Nm. You won't be able to select a gearbox either. Only a standard 5-speed manual is available.

There is no talk of any high-speed driving here, and the potential buyer understands this very well. But those who are not yet familiar with the Niva’s capabilities in detail may be very disappointed. It takes forever to accelerate from zero to 100 kilometers per hour. Namely 19 seconds. At the same time, the maximum speed does not exceed 137 kilometers per hour.

Engine in Niva Urban

The Niva Urban is equipped with exactly the same engine. It is unclear whether it has undergone revision or not. But the characteristics declared by the manufacturer turned out to be slightly better.

It’s worth starting with general information, which will reveal some details and differences between the two cars, and will also help you take the first step in choosing between Niva or Niva Urban.

In this case, the emphasis will be on the most popular three-door modification, but we will also talk a little about the four-door versions. The thing is that modifications with 4 side doors have not received proper distribution, they are much less popular, and therefore AvtoVAZ has noticeably limited the number of copies produced, concentrating its main effort on three-door ones.

The iconic Niva or VAZ 2121 appeared back in Soviet times. It was launched into assembly line production back in 1977 for many. Since 2006, the marketing policy was changed, as a result of which the car changed its name to Lada 4x4. The essence hasn’t changed much because of this, because both names are correct and relevant.

The model has been in serial production for over 50 years. Over such a long period, the car has gone through many modernizations, but the initial concept has remained the same. This is the most inexpensive and utilitarian car that has become a real legend.

Lada 4×4 Urban debuted at the Moscow Motor Show in the summer of 2014. This is the urban version of the worldwide, let's not be afraid of this word, SUV VAZ 2121. Urban is offered in 3 and 5-door versions, like the classic Niva. The model is produced at the AvtoVAZ subsidiary VIS Auto. Serial production started in October of the same year when the presentation took place. Only from February 2021 Urban is available in a five-door body, that is, with 4 side doors.

Like the classic Niva, the Urbana uses all-wheel drive with a center differential. To ensure decent off-road performance, they installed a transfer case with a reduction gear, as well as a forced differential locking system.

Urban has a monocoque body. The wheels are mounted using an independent spring suspension with wishbones and hydraulic shock absorbers. This is how the front part of the suspension is designed. At the rear there is a spring-lever dependent design and hydraulic shock absorbers. The brake and steering systems are similar to the classic VAZ 2121.

What's the result?

Let’s say it as it is: if a car with such a number of modifications and options had come out, even in the early 90s, it would have been a compact analogue of some Mitsubishi Pajero of that time - no less! However, in modern conditions of a metropolis, living with a Lada 4x4 Urban is not easy. If the general driving parameters of the car do not cause any special problems even today, then the operational and driving details, which accumulated in a whole car, became tiresome in three weeks.

“Niva”, as before, keeps the driver on his toes every minute. Firstly, this is, of course, the non-stop hum and whistle of everything around, which over time you don’t even get used to, but simply come to terms with it. Secondly, the engine gets hot in traffic jams, which is why the temperature sensor is constantly monitored. One of the wheels is poisoning, so you have to pump it up every two days. The stove has only two modes - either you fry or you freeze, and we were unable to get used to controlling the microclimate system to get something in between. The heated rear window no longer works. Due to the very small angle of rotation of the wheels, the Niva cannot make a turn even on a three-lane road, not to mention maneuvers in crowded yards. Plus all the ergonomic features from forty years ago.

If I were the real owner of this car, at the nearest VAZ service center they would probably have cursed me, given that not a single breakdown has occurred with the car in 10 thousand km. We would simply eliminate and improve everything that is simply unfinished and overlooked in the new Niva, even if we have to do this at our own expense.

Hence the conclusion. For a resident of a modern metropolis, “Niva” is a kind of toy. Clearly not the only car in the family that acts exclusively as a tuning project for serious off-road adventures - hunting, fishing or even participating in trophy raids. Considering how many prepared Nivas I have seen at various off-road competitions, the demand in this segment is good: there is simply nothing cheaper among serious SUVs.

Well, the second application, in fact, is widespread: “Niva” is the most affordable, simple and, taking into account all the modifications, a relatively comfortable SUV for the village, which will not be an outright “iron” either on the highway or in the city. Even the absence of a branded service nearby is unlikely to become a problem, since our men will repair their own Niva using cheap spare parts themselves. Considering that today Lada 4x4 with a forty-year background is among the top 20 best-selling cars in Russia, it is really too early to retire the legend.
