Do no harm
Not all car washes are equally useful - especially those that seem to promise the safety of the car. Often it turns out just the opposite: contactless washing backfires on the body. Are you asking why? Well, first things first.
Contactless washing as a mass phenomenon does not exist anywhere except Russia. More precisely, such a technology is practiced abroad, but it solves completely different problems: as a rule, in Europe, contactless is used exclusively for keeping commercial vehicles, wagons, and construction equipment clean - that is, mainly for washing complex profile structures (such as truck frames), which are not very convenient in terms of reaching all corners. In this case, external gloss is not of fundamental importance.
For the first, non-contact washing phase, it is better to use an emulsion rather than foam.

Signs of proper washing
Good car washes are usually located where there is a high concentration of regular customers and the owners value their reputation - in the parking lots of residential complexes or shopping centers. Here's a reminder to help you figure out if you've come to the right place in your search for automotive hygiene.
The pre-wash composition should be applied to a dry body. Accordingly, if dirt is knocked off with a jet from a Karcher, this is not correct. The logic is this: a film of water on a wet car reduces the concentration of shampoo.
To wash wheel rims, active substances are used that can cope with high-temperature deposits.

Special compounds are used to wash wheels, since the discs always contain specific contaminants (dust from the pads). If you notice that the wheels are washed with the same shampoo as the body, then know: this is pointless - the wheels will not be washed properly.
The washer must pass the sponge over the car in a certain sequence: roof, window line, waist line, and so on. You cannot select, for example, the starboard side and wash the top and bottom at the same time. In addition, for the lower part of the body (sills, arches) you need to use a separate sponge.
For the body, artificial suede is evil: it is a very rough-textured material with weak absorbent properties. The car should only be wiped with microfiber, and one towel per car. Having a washing machine is a good sign, and even more so having a dryer. Many advanced car washes even advertise this point by displaying such equipment in the customer area.
When the body dries, a whitish coating appears on the paint. The high pressure cleaner can't handle it. And under the layer of water the car seems to be clean.

The car is not blown with compressed air from a compressor, but a special turbo dryer is used. This is a vacuum cleaner in reverse: two electric turbines with a total power of 3.5 kW. What is important here is not the pressure, but the significant area of the surface being treated and the high temperature.
Doorways are washed with a non-pressure jet. You cannot use a high-pressure apparatus, otherwise the seals may be damaged, and water will fly into the cabin.
For washing textile rugs, not a universal “Kärcher” is used, but a special cyclonic dust collector (“cyclone”). You can do it the old fashioned way - with a vacuum cleaner and a brush. The point is that a high-pressure apparatus can damage the rug, which will also remain wet (it’s unlikely that anyone will bother drying it) and, therefore, will rot. By the way, rugs should not lie on the floor during washing - special clothespins are provided for them in the wet area.
Some mats have Velcro on the back that secures them in the car. Therefore, you cannot wash the mats by simply throwing them on the floor: you can damage the Velcro. |
For deep cleaning of textile rugs, a “cyclone” is used - a device whose operating principle is based on the use of a vortex flow. |
The list of services should not include wet interior cleaning. The skin must not be wet at all! To care for it, smart people have come up with compositions that are not just cleansing, but also preservative.
The water temperature doesn't matter. Whether it is warm or cold will not affect the result in any way.
What to pay attention to
When cleaning the car body, follow a number of rules that help protect the vehicle’s paintwork from damage:
Bitumen stains and bird droppings cannot be polished out. This will cause new scratches and damage to the grinding wheel.
If the vehicle is used intensively, it is recommended to carry out a comprehensive vehicle wash twice a year: once in the summer and once in the winter. Cleaning the car from dirt and applying protective compounds will not only return the car to a presentable appearance, but will also protect the vehicle from the negative effects of environmental factors.

And others…
You can also wash your car in an automatic gantry car wash. This is quick and, as a rule, inexpensive, but this method of cleaning cannot be called gentle: the brushes, which frantically whip the sides of the car, are not very gentle on the paintwork - and it does not matter what material they are made of.
Sometimes in the parking lots of shopping centers, enterprising young people offer a dry wash: five minutes, they say, and the car will sparkle without any water. As you can easily guess, this will not be a wash, but sabotage: although the car will look clean, rubbing dirt on the body will not have the best effect on the paintwork - this type of “care” is not much different from mechanically scraping off dirt.
The low and stable platform allows you to work with large vehicles.

But self-service car washes are not so bad. Another thing is that to achieve the desired effect, it is still better to use your own shampoo. In addition, high-quality washing will probably take time - and in the end you will pay more for such a wash than you planned. But if the process itself gives you pleasure, then why not?

How can you wash your car yourself?
Some motorists prefer not to pay money to car washes, but to carry out the washing procedure themselves. It's no safer than going to the car wash, but you can find good contact chemicals for car care like this. These are chemical products from Karcher, Bosch, Nerta, as well as universal formulations in the form of mild car shampoos. Carrying out a self-wash should be done quite carefully, and here are some important reasons:
- if you use the wrong chemicals, you can seriously damage the body, for example, there may be places where the varnish has completely peeled off, so that the paint takes on an unsightly matte appearance;
- contact washing is quite dangerous for varnish, even if you use good products, since rubbing with sponges and rags can seriously damage the body of your car;
- poor removal of dust and dirt initially, and then rubbing with a sponge causes micro-scratches, which then become large chips and other problems;
- Without good water pressure it is almost impossible to ensure adequate cleaning of the car body, this becomes the reason for the constant presence of contamination on your car;
- in dacha and private areas there is another problem - in summer very cold water is supplied from the well, but the body and glass are hot, which can often lead to serious problems.
With constant self-washing, car owners often find various problems with their car. In particular, these are chips and cracks in paintwork, cracked glass due to temperature changes, removal of the protective layer of varnish, and the consequences of using low-quality or counterfeit chemicals. But if you choose wisely when choosing cleaning products and methods, then taking care of your car body yourself will be safer than going to a specialized car wash.
