Chip tuning of the Daewoo Nexia is a change in the software (chip, firmware) of the electronic engine or transmission control unit to increase power, reduce fuel consumption, eliminate failures, and ensure stable operation of the engine control system.

Do you need a car that would be very inexpensive to buy, would not break down, and would cost a penny to maintain?
And so that at the same time it drives relatively dynamically and is quite comfortable for two people? “It doesn’t happen like that,” you say. "Happens!" – the hero of our today’s material is sure. However, there are a few “buts”: you will have to sacrifice pathos, the legendary status of the brand, high-quality Mexican jerboa leather in the cabin, iPhone support and a host of other fashionable gadgets and options that usually begin the description of almost any modern car. Ilya was guided by approximately these considerations in 2009, when the time came to change his means of transportation. It’s worth noting that he already had experience in motorsport (professional karting, Legends, RSKG), so I wanted driving a city car not to cause nausea and despondency, but to delight with drive.

Of course, with such requests, further improvements to the selected vehicle were also expected, but with all this, the purchase budget was quite modest. As a result, after looking at several options, Ilya settled not on an elderly Japanese car like the Mark II, as is often the case, but... on a Daewoo Nexia.

Since I immediately planned to begin modifications, I bought a new Nexia in the simplest configuration.
I had encountered this brand and model more than once before, and had a full understanding of its capabilities and shortcomings. I chose a copy without power steering, air conditioning and other joys of automobile life. First of all, the front seats went to the trash bin - their place was taken by civilian UNP Racer “buckets”. Moreover, for the passenger, the lower part of the “seat” was adjusted to make it convenient to get in and out of the car. Then came the turn of the suspension: Weitec springs (-40 mm), KYB AGX shock absorbers with adjustable stiffness, a larger-diameter front stabilizer and an upper strut were installed. Instead of standard wheels, they installed 15-inch VSMPO forged wheels with Yokohama AVS V 102 tires.

After that, it was the turn of the transmission. Instead of the standard gearbox, they introduced a box with a short main pair and other gear ratios - also from Nexia, only a different version. While looking for tuning options, Ilya even read somewhere that someone installed an Opel Calibra gearbox in a Daewoo, but the gear ratios were longer, so he didn’t see the point in this decision. But together with a different gearbox, a clutch of increased diameter was installed.

Having finished with the transmission, we inspected the brakes, selected ATE discs and pads (standard discs were prevented from overheating) and slightly modified the main brake cylinder. Considering that after restyling the Nexia is equipped with more powerful calipers, they were not touched. At the moment, the driver is generally satisfied with the brakes, although there are already plans to increase the performance of the rear ones.

Now about the engine. On occasion, Ilya received a sports camshaft from OKB Dynamics SmartCAMS, which was immediately introduced into the engine along with a modified throttle and minor modifications to the cylinder head. The standard exhaust went to the trash bin after the seats - its place was taken by a system from MG-Race (a spider, two resonators and a muffler), after which the engine was chip-tuned. The ECU remains standard, but it works with an individual program even after online configuration.

The modifications made eventually led to the fact that we had to pay attention to the body, the rigidity of which, to put it mildly, raised questions. At the front, we simply installed a lower stiffener strut (without it, the strut cups would “walk around”). But at the back we had to do a little more difficult work...

For normal operation, it was necessary to trim the inner edges of the rear wings and change the shape of the wheel arches. And all again because historically Daewoo Nexia is a deep modernization of the Daewoo Racer, a licensed copy of the Opel Kadett. Someone, while developing the Kadett, came up with the idea to make a very unique rear arch that covers part of the wheel and is made in such a way that it is very difficult to simply cut it out without damaging the body. And UzDaewoo continued the idea and made even tighter wheel arches. As a result, the rather narrow 195-mm tires on the new Nexia, during active driving, touched the inside of the wheel arch and the edge of the wing, forcing everything to be redone.

In addition to technical improvements, Ilya paid a little attention to the interior of the car. Instead of the uncomfortable steering wheel, I installed a Momo, and replaced the supposedly stock double-din Clarion with a regular JVC with Morel Tempo acoustics.

Personally, I find it very comfortable in the car.
The conditions of the “working space” are such that I can easily drive a Daewoo Nexia over long distances, about 1,000 kilometers, and not get tired at all. As a result of all the alterations, the result was a car that fully suits my driving style. After the KZ-2 series karts (with engines up to 125 cm³ and six gears), I am absolutely not surprised by the incredible acceleration to “hundreds”, and I am not chasing this. It is important to me that the car can drive and at the same time be stable in “combat” mode, that is, brake late and without horror, turn accurately and predictably on the verge of slipping where necessary, and accelerate normally. That’s why I made the suspension stiffer, introduced a “short” gearbox, installed Slik forged wheels with TOYO R888 semi-slick tires, and so on. I thought a lot about a limited slip differential, but ultimately abandoned the idea due to concerns about the life of the unit. When Ilya ordered new rims, he wanted to make them bright, and he chose light green ones. At the same time, body defects such as a dent on the roof and traces of neighbors' parking were corrected for this purpose, the side mirrors were repainted to match the color of the wheels and light green stripes were made on the body. This, of course, immediately refreshed the car.

What is possible and what is needed

Yes, this Daewoo Nexia has little power - at best, about 120 hp. With. at 6,700 rpm, but this is compensated by other modifications. In principle, bringing the “herd” of forces to 190-200 is not difficult and not very expensive, but in the future this will require rebuilding the entire car in a circle in order to maintain balance. After all, you cannot strengthen one node without paying attention to other components.

In general, Ilya admits that it is not easy to make improvements to Nexia. The car is positioned as an excellent option for pensioners, summer residents and taxi drivers - accordingly, among the assortment of tuning stores, it is almost impossible to find anything interesting for it. There are simply no ready-made goods and there never will be. Any question that arises forces you to think creatively and dodge in every possible way - this is not JDM, where there are kilotons of tuning things and ready-made kits for almost any car. Some similarity between the model and the Opel Kadett helps a little, but not much: some parts may come from Opel, although this is rare. In this case, the installed springs and steering wheel were sold as parts for Opel.

What's next? As you know, tuning can only be paused, but not completed. The plans include searching for increased traction, thinking about the rear brakes, and there is also a desire to change the already tired acoustics. Well, given the unusual nature of Ilya’s choice of car for tuning, any surprises are possible!
