Oil pressure in the VAZ 2106 engine, possible malfunctions, how to diagnose a breakdown
There is one of the indicators on the dashboard of cars that informs the driver about a decrease in oil pressure in the engine unit. The so-called oil pressure light in the form of an oil can signals a critical condition of the engine - insufficient amount of lubricant. On the panels of VAZ “classic” cars (six, seven, nine) there is also such an indicator. And if it suddenly lights up while driving or at low speeds while parked, this is a signal that there is a malfunction in the engine.
Why does the oil pressure light come on in a VAZ classic?
The first step is to distinguish cases when an icon in the form of an oil can is suddenly displayed. It is completely safe for the icon to light up for just a few moments in the following cases:
- when there is a strong roll of the car on a sharp turn;
- when starting in winter;
- after a long period of parking on uneven ground.
As a rule, in such situations, oil flows from one part of the engine to another, which is why the oil pressure sensor is triggered. However, after some time, the oil is evenly distributed, and the signal about a drop in pressure in the system stops.
The situation is similar when starting the engine in the cold season: at low temperatures, the working fluid thickens, accordingly, it is necessary to warm up the engine properly in order to create the necessary pressure in the system.
In all other cases, the appearance of an oil can on the instrument panel indicates the presence of failures or malfunctions.
So for what reasons can the oil pressure light come on in classic VAZ models?
- First of all, due to a lack of oil in the engine.
- Due to an exhausted oil filter.
- The oil pressure sensor or its wiring is to blame.
- Wear of the liner on the crankshaft.
- The oil pump has failed.
Any of these reasons can affect the oil pressure level in the engine unit. Therefore, the car owner will first have to find the source of the problem and only then begin troubleshooting.
Checking the functionality and replacing the sensor
Like any part of the DDM, it can fail. It is known that without oil, the engine of any car cannot operate for a long time. It protects parts from wear, helps the engine cool and prevents overheating. This makes the process of monitoring oil level and quality necessary. In addition, an important indicator is its pressure.
First of all, you should carefully inspect the sensor. The absence of mechanical damage on the sensor does not yet indicate the absence of malfunctions. Damage to the sensor can be not only mechanical, but also technical in nature. Therefore, the process of checking the oil pressure sensor is very important.
When a signal appears about a change in pressure in the system, it becomes necessary to check the functionality of the sensor. First, the integrity of the power supply is externally assessed and the oil level in the system is measured with a dipstick. After this, you can begin checking the sensor itself.
To do this, you need to perform a number of actions:
- Unscrew the sensor.
- Install a pressure gauge in its place.
- Start the engine.
- Analyze the information from the pressure gauge (if the pressure reading is more than 0.35 kg/cm2, then the sensor is working).
If there is no pressure gauge, then the pressure can be checked in another way. You should unscrew the DDM, turn on the starter, and if oil splashes fly out of the hole, it means that lubrication is carried out normally, and the pressure sensor has failed. As a rule, the price of a new oil pressure sensor for a VAZ-2107 with article number 695306 is 100-150 rubles, depending on the manufacturer.
If we talk about the process of replacing the DDM itself, it does not have any difficulties. Before replacing, it is necessary to clean the sensor from dust and dirt, as debris from a faulty sensor can get into the engine.
Then the contact wire is disconnected from the sensor, and the removed negative terminal from the battery is installed in its place. Using a 21 mm wrench, the sensor is loosened, after which you can easily unscrew it. Then the new sensor is screwed in, the contact wire is attached and the battery terminal is returned to its place.
What to do when the oil pressure light comes on on Zhiguli cars
Service center specialists advise drivers of any cars, both domestic and imported, to stop driving and turn off the engine at the first signal of a drop in engine oil. When the oil pressure sensor is triggered, it is clear that there is some problem with the engine.
First action
The first thing to do after stopping is to measure the oil level. It is likely that it is below the minimum mark and you just need to add the required amount of liquid. After adding, it is necessary to take another measurement - if the level is between the Max and Min marks, then we can conclude that the sensor was triggered precisely because of a lack of oil in the engine. Try to start the engine, if the oil can icon disappears, then the problem is solved.
In VAZ-2106, VAZ-2107, VAZ-2109 cars special oil pressure sensors were installed. Modern models have not used this type of device for a long time. The oil pressure sensor on all cars of the Zhiguli family performs the same function - it measures the amount of lubricant in the engine unit. If there is not enough oil, the friction force between the moving parts of the engine increases, and this leads to rapid breakdown of both the valves, the camshaft or crankshaft, and cylinders.
Useful information about oil pressure on VAZ 2101-VAZ 2107
Welcome! Oil pressure - in fact, this is one of the most important checks that need to be done with the car periodically (Because in some cases the instruments lie) or only at the moment when the oil pressure gauge begins to show unacceptable values, and all this will be accompanied by the burning of a special lamps.
Note! There is an interesting video at the end of the article, check it out too!
What happens if the pressure in the lubrication system is lost? Some people already know the answer to this question, but others don’t yet, let’s explain. When the engine is running, its parts are lubricated, but how to supply lubricant to the parts if there is no pressure in the system? No, no way, and therefore, in the absence of pressure, engine parts are not lubricated because the oil does not have time to reach them due to the lack of pressure!
And therefore, the loss of pressure in the lubrication system is very dangerous for the engine, and this leads to oil starvation, that is, the old oil leaves when the engine is running and is immediately replaced by a new one, but as mentioned above, due to low pressure, the new oil may simply not reach, but the old stuff still comes out and therefore the parts are left simply without lubrication.
What can cause a loss of pressure? This mainly happens due to various reasons, one of these reasons is deformation of the oil pan, which can happen at any time to the car, for example: You are driving a car, and there is an obstacle ahead that you put in the middle of the car, but still it the obstacle itself hits you against the bottom and thereby breaks through the pan.
And when the pan is broken, the pressure itself will slowly drop (Depending on what hole is in the pan), in this case, pay attention to the indicator that will tell you that the pressure is dropping.
Note! Do not allow the pressure in the system to completely drop, otherwise there may be very big problems with the engine. If the pressure drops, it is best to stop abruptly and immediately turn off the car’s engine!
What happens if the pressure in the system is too high? Honestly speaking, nothing good will happen, because with increased pressure, the oil in the engine will constantly be at high pressure, and therefore the oil will coat the system parts too much and in most cases the oil will simply come out through the cracks and seals.
What causes the pressure in the system to increase? As a rule, this happens due to the pressure reducing valve that is installed on the oil pump and which is indicated by an arrow in the photo:
Over time, this valve becomes clogged and therefore it stops releasing excess pressure and therefore it rises above its normal level. This valve may also simply wear out and require replacement. (For information on how to replace the pressure relief valve, see the article: “Repairing the oil pump”, everything is explained there in detail)
This can also happen due to the increased performance of the oil pump, which will not perform its job like a regular pump, but more powerfully, which is why on a standard engine this can also affect the oil pressure.
How to understand what pressure is in the lubrication system? The oil pressure light, which is located on the dashboard, will tell you about this, or you can focus on the same indicator, which can also tell you that the pressure in the system has either disappeared or become higher.
Why does the oil pressure light come on at idle when the engine is warm?
Most Zhiguli owners are faced with the problem of indicating a drop in oil pressure at idle speed. There may be several reasons for this:
- malfunction in the oil pressure sensor;
- the oil pump is clogged or faulty;
- low-quality oil is poured;
- severe wear of the splines;
- a faulty oil filter is used.
Reasons for operation of the oil pressure sensor and troubleshooting methods
Thus, the pressure sensor signals the presence of problems in the engine unit. If the owner does not have the necessary experience in diagnostics and repair, then it is better to entrust the identification of the true cause of the problem to a specialist. In addition, when the oil can icon lights up, it is not recommended to drive the car - there is a high probability that the rubbing parts of the engine will jam. In this case, the motor will practically not be restored.
VAZ cars of classic models are equipped with outdated, but fully functional mechanisms. The same oil pressure sensor, which signals the driver about problems with the lubrication of engine elements, performs its functions quite successfully: at the right moment the device is activated, which allows the driver to take timely measures. The most important concern of the car owner should not be repair work, but preventive procedures. Only vigilant monitoring of the condition of the engine unit and the selection of proven working fluids and filters will allow you to delay costly major repairs as much as possible.

Replacing the VAZ 2107 oil sensor yourself
Replacement: oil pressure sensor VAZ 2107
As sad as it is to admit, any component of a car can fail, and this happens at the most inopportune moment. In this regard, control and measuring devices are no exception. The reasons for this may be different:
- Violation of operating conditions prescribed by the manufacturer.
- Temperature violation.
- Elementary mechanical damage to the sensor.
In general, these reasons are enough, but the result is the same. Considering that control and measuring devices cannot be repaired, they must be replaced if necessary. In this step-by-step guide for car enthusiasts, it will be described and demonstrated, based on a VAZ 2107 car, replacing the oil pressure sensor.
How to determine the quality of the auto chemicals used?
The quality of a lubricant is determined by its viscosity. The unit of measurement is centistokes. For each car, the manufacturer recommends its own optimal oil viscosity. For VAZ 2106, it is recommended to use oxol 0W or 5W in winter, and 20W and 30W in summer. If suspicion arises and inspection is not possible, the lubricant should be replaced.
This procedure is carried out as follows:
- 10 minutes after the engine has been turned off, you need to unscrew the plug and completely drain the lubricant.
- Screw the cap back on and fill in the appropriate product.
- Start the engine and let it run at minimum speed for 2 minutes.
- Stop the engine and wait 5 minutes.
- Check the lubricant level and top up if necessary.
How do you know which oil is suitable? First, follow the manufacturer's recommendations. And secondly, trust only well-known, well-established brands.
If the oil receiver is clogged, then it is not difficult to guess why the lubricant pressure drops. There simply won’t be enough of it supplied to the pump. If the valve breaks, the situation is different. Here, on the contrary, an increased bypass of oxol will be observed. The reason must be sought by the method of sequential elimination. First, check whether the strainer is in normal condition. If clogged, it is washed in gasoline and replaced. A valve malfunction in a VAZ 2106 car most often occurs due to a failure of the spring, which has to be replaced with a new one.
What to do if the oil level indicator comes on?
An insufficient amount of lubricant in the engine can lead to breakdowns and, as a result, large financial costs. On a highway where there are no service stations, a drop in oil pressure below a critical value is a serious problem. What to do? First you need to find out why this happened.
- First of all, open the hood and visually check for fresh oil leaks on the engine.
- You also need to look under the car itself and check the condition of the oil sump. If there is a leak in it, you can try to temporarily fix it on your own using improvised materials, such as a piece of rubber or a rag.
- Sometimes the problem is that the oil filter has not been tightened properly. In this case, it is enough to simply turn it clockwise. In this case, precautions must be taken. Work only with gloves, as the engine temperature reaches impressive values, and you can easily get burned.
- Only after 10 minutes have passed from the moment of stopping can you start checking the oil level. Remove the dipstick and wipe it with a rag. Now put it back in and then take it out. The lubricant level should not be lower than the minimum and higher than the maximum values marked on the dipstick. If there is not enough oxol, you just need to add it. The VAZ 2106, just like other cars, after a mileage of 100 thousand kilometers, begins to consume lubricant in large quantities. This causes the pressure level to drop.
Replacing the oil pressure sensor VAZ 2107
Repair work will require the following set of devices from the car owner:
- socket wrench set to “19”;
- clean rags;
- new sealing gasket for the sensor.
Before starting work, read the operating manual to remember the location of the part. If a book with a description is not at hand, then the picture below will help.
Before starting maintenance, you need to “de-energize” the car by disconnecting the battery terminals. Before dismantling the old sensor, you need to clean the space around the part with a rag so that dirt does not get into the oil channels. In addition, on clean panels it will be easier to detect the presence of grease leaks.
Algorithm for replacing the sensor with a new one:
- Remove the battery terminals;
- Using the key “19”, unscrew the DDM along the thread, pull it out, having previously dismantled the contact wire of the sensor;
- Replace the sealing ring with a new one;
- Install a new sensor and connect the wiring to it.
Reasons why oil pressure decreases
We strongly recommend contacting a specialized car service center or starting to repair the car yourself (if you have the appropriate experience) if a drop in lubricant pressure is accompanied by the following symptoms of a power unit breakdown:
- the engine overheats greatly even under relatively light loads;
- the pressure reducing valve operates with serious malfunctions;
- bearings wear out;
- The lubricant receiver is severely clogged.
Engine diagnostics, performed when the oil pressure in the engine of a VAZ-2106 car decreases, usually indicates the following reasons for this phenomenon:
- leakage of lubricating fluid caused by violations of the tightness of the system, wear of any gaskets or seals. It is quite possible to fix this problem yourself;
- incorrectly set ignition;
- failure of the fan sensor;
- radiator clogged;
- increased formation of soot.
Electronic engine control unit
The VAZ 2107 engine control unit is the main element responsible for the proper operation of the entire internal combustion engine. The block processes a huge number of different processes. All sensors that are installed on the “seven” are directly connected to the computer. It is he who reads information from the sensors and sends signals to fuel injection with the required amount of gasoline and fuel concentration. If the ECU breaks down, the car may stop starting or have problems similar to signs of failure of any of the sensors.
The engine block is located under the glove compartment on a special bracket.
