The torpedo (drivers often say “dashboard”) is the space at the top of the steering wheel and instrument panel leading to the windshield. It is quite difficult, costly and practically impossible to reupholster a torpedo with different materials on your own, since the interior element has a complex shape with several angles of inclination. We offer the cost of torpedo reupholstery, which is one of the most affordable in the capital region. The starting amount is 50 thousand rubles. The tuning studio guarantees high-quality and professional reupholstery of a car's dashboard in Moscow with the ability to choose not only the base material, but also seams and stitches.
Main stages of the process
If you decide that you need this element reupholstered, you should come to Grand Design or take a photo of the part and send it to us. Our specialists will analyze the condition in detail and calculate the required amount of material.
Process technologies
To begin with, specialists dismantle the front panel, remove it from the car interior and install it on their work surface. The following steps follow:
- Removing old coating and sanding until smooth and clean.
- Degreasing the working surface.
- Formation of patterns. Please note that in our tuning studio, each time the patterns are made anew, taking into account the dimensions of the dashboard of a certain car brand.
- Preparation of the adhesive layer, as a rule, is non-woven material. Leather and leatherette lie flat on it and smooth out quickly enough.
- The prepared elements from the base material are applied to the surface, and if everything is accurate, then they are sewn into a single case.
- Excess material is carefully trimmed from the reverse side.
- Final measurement and, if everything matches in size, then the cover is glued.
- Apply glue evenly to the dashboard and fix the cover from the top.
- Waiting for the glue to dry completely. We use high-quality substances that polymerize in 1–2 days.
- The finished instrument panel is installed and the order is given to the client.
We take a professional approach to solving the problem, so we carefully dismantle the instrument panel and maintain the safety and integrity of the electrical and control components.
All clients who contacted us for our service note the high quality - not a single seam is visually visible and the entire upholstery looks intact.
The technology is identical both in the case of reupholstering a car dashboard with leather and other materials.
Instrument installation and dashboard assembly
Once you're satisfied that you've done everything you wanted and are completely happy with the result, it's time to put the removed instruments back in place, connect them and reassemble the dashboard. Don't forget to check that the devices are powered and that everything is in order with the casing fastenings. If you do everything calmly and don’t rush, then such tuning of the dashboard will not only be no worse than the one for which you would have to pay a fairly large amount in the studio, but even better, because you will do such tuning with your own hands and in You can change or redo something at any time.
There are many reasons why a driver might want to change the covering on the dashboard. For example, the airbags in the car could have deployed, after which the dashboard became unusable. Or perhaps the car owner was simply tired of the usual car interior and wanted something new. Whatever the reason, there is only one way out: the dashboard will have to be retightened. Let's try to figure out how to do this and what materials to use when reupholstering.
What materials do we use?
For owners of premium cars, it is extremely important that everything matches the high status. As a rule, they rely on upholstery with genuine Italian leather. The following materials are also available in our catalog:
- Alcantara;
- artificial leather (eco leather).
Particularly in demand is the upholstery of the dashboard with Alcantara, a material that is resistant to various factors and has a fairly long service life at an affordable price. In appearance it resembles cut velvet and plush, but with a rougher texture, and very pleasant to the touch, like thick suede.
The materials used to replace the previous coating are resistant to various aggressive factors. Among them:
- direct sunlight;
- low or high temperature in the cabin;
- high humidity.
Customers have a choice of different color shades: you can focus on traditional ones: black, brown, or rely on bold solutions, for example, white, red. Modern and high-quality materials do not leave fingerprints and are scratch-resistant.
The quality of genuine Italian leather, faux leather, Alcantara is not lost over the years and even with regular dry cleaning of the interior.
The following types are classified according to the method of processing and finishing:
- - aniline leather - leather that has undergone minimal technical processing and is mainly dyed with organic dyes, high-quality, durable, but soft and pleasant to the touch;
- - semi-aniline leather - undergoes a little more processing than aniline, but also has excellent quality and high characteristics;
- - smooth leather - made with minimal processing without sanding from the highest quality raw materials without defects, with a natural pattern, the most wear-resistant;
- - nappa leather / nappa - refers to smooth semi-aniline leather, made from cattle leather, has softness, elasticity, strength;
- — polished leather – is processed by grinding to eliminate natural defects of the skin (scratches, bites, etc.);
- - textured leather - leather that has been pressed under plates with heating to eliminate skin defects and/or give the surface a certain relief or pattern, simulating exotic leather;
- - patent leather - after dyeing, a layer of varnish is applied to the leather to give a glossy surface and shine;
- - split - obtained as a result of splitting one skin into three or more;
- - saddle cloth and shora - obtained by fat tanning from cattle leather from the back of animals, thick, dense and durable leather, shora is more flexible leather than saddle cloth;
- - yuft - obtained by fat tanning the skin from the belly of cattle, soft and elastic;
- - shagreen - obtained without tanning from the skins of horses or sharks, has a dense and durable structure with a characteristic grainy pattern.
- - suede - leather treated with fat tanning (aged in a container with tanning agent and fat to preserve and preserve the leather), with low pile, soft, velvety, breathable, made from deer or sheep skin;
- - velor - leather subjected to chrome tanning and polishing, made from pig or sheep skins;
When reupholstering a car, due to the best quality properties and high physical and mechanical characteristics, the following leather is used: aniline or semi-aniline leather, smooth, textured, nappa leather.
Depending on the functional purpose of the skin, its physical and mechanical properties depend, because When producing a particular type of leather, operational factors affecting the leather (temperature, humidity, mechanical stress, etc.) are taken into account. Based on their functional purpose, the following types of leather are distinguished:
- — clothing and haberdashery leather . Designed for sewing outerwear (jackets, raincoats), suits, gloves, bags, belts, cases, book bindings, etc. The average thickness is from 0.5 to 1.0 mm. It has softness, elasticity and a certain abrasion resistance.
- - shoe leather. Used for the production of shoe tops and bottoms, it has an average thickness of 0.7-1.4 mm. Depending on the purpose, it is waterproof, airtight, or, conversely, allows for “breathing,” abrasion resistance, and good flexibility.
- - saddle leather. Designed for the manufacture of belts, holsters, tablets, harnesses, sheaths, trunks, etc. Most often it has a thickness of 2-2.5 mm. A significant characteristic is high tear resistance.
- - furniture leather. Used for upholstery. The average thickness is from 0.8 to 1.8 mm. The main property is abrasion resistance.
- - car leather. Used for reupholstering car interiors and elements. The average thickness is 1.2-1.6 mm. It has the following properties: resistance to solar radiation, resistance to temperature changes and humidity changes, wear resistance, fire resistance, resistance to mechanical damage, high strength. Made only from cattle leather.
Often, some car owners purchase furniture leather to reupholster the car interior. How profitable is this? It is worth knowing that when making furniture leather, unlike automotive leather, operating conditions with large temperature changes (furniture is mostly used at room temperature), changes in humidity, exposure to precipitation and aggressive chemical substances, ultraviolet radiation are not initially taken into account, The physical and mechanical properties of furniture leather are much lower than those of automobile leather.
Seam and stitch options
A popular closed version, where all the seams are brought inward and are not visually visible - only the place of fixation with the inner edge is visible.
If you want to emphasize the individual elite status of the car interior, then we offer popular types of machine seams, namely:
- Macrame;
- Pigtail;
- Herringbone;
- Cross;
- Italy;
- Step;
- Infinity;
- BMW;
- Sport and others.
They can be in one line, or presented in the form of a paired seam. Intricate, but strictly geometric and repeating lines will highlight other forms of machine stitching.
When is a torpedo reupholstered necessary?
We are often contacted by clients who are preparing a car for sale and want to improve its appearance as much as possible so as not to lose value. Drivers who are dissatisfied with the appearance of the front panel constantly work with the tuning studio: the coating has worn out, cracks and abrasions have appeared on it. Replacement is also important when there are stains on the dashboard that can no longer be removed, for example, from oilseed materials or coffee. Regular customers who literally “live” by tuning their car, in particular the interior, therefore want to update the interior down to the smallest detail. Re-upholstering of the dashboard is indispensable when old cars are being restored in order to give them a new lease of life.
Immediately after replacing the coating in the cabin, not only the appearance, but also the microclimate improves.
You are just one phone call or online order away from a new torpedo without having to purchase a new car. Choose a convenient date, come to Grand Design and they will provide you with modern tuning.
