How to clean a leather car steering wheel at home

How to update a leather steering wheel with your own hands and care for the leather braid

Every driver sooner or later has to deal with such a problem as wear of the steering wheel surface and the loss of the original appearance of the material, especially if this material is leather.
A reasonable solution in this case may be to restore the steering wheel in a specialized workshop. But what if you don’t want to overpay for such services and would like to know how to clean and paint a leather steering wheel with your own hands so that you can carry out restoration work in your own garage? This approach to solving the issue is perhaps more rational, and its implementation is accessible to every car enthusiast. You just need to have free time, read this article and prepare everything you need for work. No matter how clean your hands are while driving, your steering wheel cover will still need to be cleaned over time. You can extend the life of a leather surface, as well as delay the need for restoration and painting, with proper care and timely removal of contaminants. And yet, sooner or later, the number of abrasions and scratches will increase so much that drastic restoration measures will become the only correct solution. We will further describe in detail how to care for the leather braid and how to restore the previous appearance of the steering wheel with your own hands.

Characteristics of products for cleaning leather interiors

  • completely eliminate stains and dust;
  • remove unpleasant odors while preserving the aroma of the skin;
  • provide protection from UV rays and various types of pollution;
  • give the surface an antistatic and water-repellent effect;
  • do not leave greasy stains, make the skin soft, with a natural shine.

For some car enthusiasts, 2-in-1 products have become a lifesaver - air conditioning cleaners that remove contaminants from the surface of the car interior and provide protection from external influences. In addition, these funds provide monetary savings. But auto experts advise separating such products to ensure the highest degree of effectiveness. When purchasing conditioner for the salon, you should pay attention to its composition, which should include glycerin and vitamin E, they will give the skin protection. You can also buy special napkins with wax.

Proper care of a leather steering wheel

At some point, did you notice that the steering wheel of your car has lost its appearance, which is why the driving process has become less pleasant? In this case, appropriate measures must be taken. For example, you can restore the surface of the steering wheel to its original condition and maintain it in this form through proper and timely maintenance.

If the leather covering is very well preserved, but its appearance is somewhat damaged, then in the process of restoring it, you can limit yourself to the use of special cleaning compounds. It is quite easy to recognize a leather surface cleaner when purchasing it at a car cosmetics store: the packaging usually says “leather cleaner” (or something similar) and provides instructions on how to clean the leather steering wheel from dirt using it. You may also need a toothbrush and a clean, soft cloth.

Most leather steering wheel cleaners have similar properties, so the following list of steps can be used as a general guide:

After cleaning, it is advisable to treat the coating with a special impregnation and conditioner. The first product prevents the destruction of the skin under the influence of sweat, dirt and other aggressive factors, and the second one ensures the elasticity of the material for a long time. Although you can purchase a cleaning composition that contains the necessary protective components.

For those car owners who are not ready to spend extra money on buying cleaning products in the store, a good alternative would be to prepare the composition yourself. For this, warm water and car wash shampoo dissolved in it are suitable ingredients. Just be careful not to add too much shampoo so that the surface of the steering wheel becomes sticky after treatment. This solution should be used in the same way as caring for a leather steering wheel using store-bought products.

During routine maintenance, it is not necessary to remove the steering wheel. You just need to prevent liquid from getting on the spokes, steering wheel buttons and dashboard. For protection, use plastic film, securing it with tape.

How to properly care for a leather car interior

The appearance of a car interior is the face of its owner. But often car enthusiasts carefully monitor the condition of the front panel, rubbing it with all kinds of cleaning agents, and the leather interior itself is only occasionally wiped with a damp cloth.

Despite the fact that a leather interior is more durable than a fabric one, various conditions may not have the best effect on its appearance.

According to opinion polls, Russian motorists begin to care for their “iron horse” only when the car already has serious problems and damage. Although car enthusiasts pay more attention to appearance.

The main enemies for the skin are: sun, heat, cold, humidity, ultraviolet rays, dryness. All of them contribute to the appearance of cracks on the surface of the skin. The leather interior of a car does not withstand temperature fluctuations very well. In the warm season, the main negative factor is the sun, which simply dries out the skin. Therefore, experts recommend treating the skin once or twice a month in the summer. In cold weather, the main threat is frost, due to which the skin hardens and loses its elasticity. During this period, it is better to carry out treatment once every 3 months.

Restoring a leather steering wheel by painting

By properly caring for your steering wheel braid, you can significantly extend its service life. But even in this case, over time, scuffs and small scratches appear on the surface, which do not have the best effect on the appearance of the steering wheel and, as a result, the aesthetics of the car’s interior as a whole. Therefore, drivers quite reasonably ask the question: how to restore a leather steering wheel with your own hands if ordinary preventive measures are not enough? This will be discussed further.

You can hide defects in the coating using coloring agents.

Painting a leather steering wheel can also be done at home - there is nothing overly complicated here. You just need to select the appropriate materials and follow the recommendations. By the way, if you do not want to dismantle your steering wheel during restoration, all procedures can be carried out right on the spot. Just take care to protect the instrument panel from paint. Still, it is much more convenient to work with the steering wheel removed, plus the result will be of better quality.

Leather steering wheel - how to repair it

A leather steering wheel is a very nice addition to any car. Unfortunately, it has one drawback - it is less durable than the steering wheel itself, which is made of plastic. Is there any way to take care of a leather steering wheel?

Every car owner knows how much it will cost to paint a car at a car repair shop. Therefore, if you don’t have extra money, you can paint the car yourself if you wish. This will require a room, a compressor and a spray gun.

Preparing for painting

The quality of a car's paint job is determined by how carefully the preparatory work has been done. On a carelessly treated surface, the paint will not adhere well and will begin to peel off. Preparation should begin with the removal of non-paintable parts, including moldings, lighting fixtures, bumpers, locks and seals. If there are plastic fender liners on the wheel arches, they must also be removed; areas not to be painted must be sealed with masking tape and film. The body must be thoroughly washed to assess defects. In addition to removing dirt with water, it is necessary to remove traces of grease, bitumen stains and degrease the surface using white spirit. It is necessary to inspect the paintwork and note defects so that they are not missed during processing. Use a sharp chisel and coarse sandpaper to clean out problem areas. Paint and putty should be peeled off to the metal. Places with traces of corrosion must be thoroughly cleaned of rust.

After this, it is necessary to repair and level the surfaces. To do this, use a special two-component putty. To fill deep damage, use coarse-grained material; for small defects, fine-grained putty is suitable. This makes further grinding easier and reduces material consumption. First you need to thoroughly mix the putty with the hardener. After this, you need to quickly use the prepared mixture, as it may dry out. Putty containing lumps is not suitable for use. To apply and level the material, use a flexible spatula. It should be slightly thicker than the paintwork; sandpaper is used to remove excess. This is done after the putty has hardened and completely dried. This requires 30-60 minutes, depending on the conditions and material used. Next, grinding of the surface begins with coarse-grained sandpaper, with a gradual transition to fine sandpaper. After sanding is completed, it is cleaned of dust and degreased with white spirit.

Before painting, you need to treat the old paintwork with fine sandpaper to give it a matte finish. This will ensure good adhesion between the old and new layers. The body needs to be cleaned of dust and degreased, then apply a thin layer of primer. When the primer is dry, you can begin applying paint, which is applied in several layers. If the paint has low hiding power, more coats may be needed.

The paint should be diluted with a solvent to the desired thickness, which is indicated in the instructions, then poured through a filter mesh into the spray tank. The paint must be applied from the roof. There should be a distance of 15-20 cm between the surface and the sprayer. After applying each layer, a break of 15 minutes is required. The duration of paint drying is affected by air humidity and temperature and averages a day. To speed up the drying process, you need good ventilation of the room.

How can I clean my steering wheel so that it looks like new?

Even when regularly caring for their car, many drivers don’t even think about cleaning the steering wheel. However, sooner or later the steering wheel does attract attention - with its obviously dirty appearance or stickiness to the touch. This means that a logical conclusion arises: this vehicle control device also needs to be cleaned, just like the upholstery or dashboard. But it’s quite difficult to find a special cleaner for the steering wheel on sale... What should you do, and what will help put this most important element of car control in order? We tried to find answers to your questions!

The steering wheel is one of the most contaminated elements of the interior. And this is not surprising! After all, we don’t wash our hands before getting into the car and taking the wheel. Therefore, over time, a dense layer of dirt accumulates on its upholstery, consisting of fat, particles of sweat and the skin of our hands, dust, fuel residues and other unpleasant substances. By the way, for drivers prone to allergies, a dirty steering wheel can even provoke an exacerbation of the disease.

A greasy steering wheel looks, to put it mildly, unaesthetic. Control elements made of plastic are less dirty. On them, dirt accumulates in places where the hands come into contact with the coating. As a rule, these are positions, as they say, at 3 and 9 o'clock. But a steering wheel upholstered in leather or suede collects more dirt, because it accumulates in the pores and irregularities of the natural material. This means that such a steering wheel must be cleaned more often, and in addition, it must also be treated with special care products.

What cleaning products should you choose?

When buying special products for cleaning the car interior, you should not chase the price, since it is easy to miscalculate in this matter and irrevocably damage the car interior. Particular attention should be paid to the country of production and the manufacturer itself. The brand of cleaning product must have been on the market for at least ten years. In addition, it is much more profitable to buy more expensive products than to soon change the entire interior trim. If the product is used for the first time, then it should be applied to a small area of the salon and see how it affects the skin.

When cleaning the interior, do not use force to remove dirt, as this can damage the leather. It is better to clean the leather interior in a place where the sun's rays will not enter the car, since ultraviolet radiation can enhance or, on the contrary, reduce the effects of chemicals.

Cleaning the steering wheel from dirt

If you try really hard, you can find a special product for cleaning the steering wheel on sale. For those who are not ready to shell out substantial sums for keeping the steering wheel clean, we can recommend simpler, but no less effective ways to deal with dirt. What will help in this case?

Car shampoo diluted in water.

You will say that car shampoo is already diluted in water. Indeed, to wash a car, a certain amount of product must be mixed with liquid in the required proportion. So, to clean the steering wheel, you need to take a little more water than indicated in the instructions for the car shampoo. In this case, it is better to use the liquid warm. If you add little water and a lot of cleaning agent, then you will have to try very hard to wash off such a composition from the steering wheel. Most likely, a sticky layer will remain on it, which will collect even more dirt.

How do we act? Using microfiber soaked in the prepared solution, we clean the steering wheel from dirt. For ease of application, you can pour the cleaning composition into a spray bottle. In addition, an old toothbrush will come in handy to remove dirt from hard-to-reach places. If the steering wheel is very dirty, apply diluted car shampoo to the surface and let it dissolve the dirt for a couple of minutes. Only then wipe the steering wheel with clean microfiber.

Wet wipes.

Many drivers use this product to quickly deal with dirt on the steering wheel as it appears. By the way, baby cleansing wipes are especially popular in this matter. Designed to delicately fight dirt on the delicate skin of babies, they also do a good job on the steering wheel. Alas, this method will only give results if the steering wheel is not very dirty. Yes, and in this way it will not be possible to remove dirt from the pores and unevenness of the skin.

How do we act? Wipe the steering wheel with napkins until dirt is visible on them.

Leather car interior - stages of care

Before washing the interior, it is recommended to make sure that there is no special polyvinyl chloride film on the surface of the leather. It is worth spraying the seats with a small amount of water. If there is no such film, then the water will quickly be absorbed into the skin, otherwise the water will remain on the surface. If there is a film, you should use car care products used to clean vinyl surfaces.

Cleaning should begin with the leather steering wheel, which is the dirtiest part, so you should use detergents. Before using chemicals, it is necessary to test it on the threads that tighten the braid, since chemicals suitable for washing leather may not be suitable for fabric elements.

When cleaning the front of the steering wheel, it is worth paying attention to the logo in its center, as this is where a lot of dirt accumulates. It should be cleaned with a cotton swab.

Next after the steering wheel comes cleaning the dashboard; a brush and cleaning agent will come in handy here. This part of the interior is covered in road dust, which should be removed regularly so that it does not eat into the textured surface of the leather. This is where a brush comes to the rescue! It should be quite soft and should be used to cleanse the skin with light movements to avoid damage.

Next, you should start cleaning the seats. If you have a vacuum cleaner, put on the plastic attachment and carefully vacuum the seats. After this, you need to wipe them with a sponge with soapy water or chemicals, and then apply a special conditioner.

When caring for interior leather, many car enthusiasts make the typical mistake of thinking that the more cleaning products they apply, the better. But excessive oiling of the skin leads to the appearance of spots on it.

To ensure that your leather car interior remains in excellent condition, you must adhere to some rules:

  • Do not place sharp objects into the interior that could damage the upholstery.
  • You should not smoke in the cabin, as the skin absorbs the smell for a long time, and the ashes can burn the skin.
  • Once a month it is worth treating the leather with special products designed to care for the leather interior of a car.
  • There is no need to leave stains for a long time; spilled liquid should be wiped up immediately with a damp cloth.

Taking care of the leather on your steering wheel

The plastic steering wheel should be cleaned well and wiped dry with clean microfiber. But if the steering wheel is upholstered in leather, then another stage of care will be required. It is not enough just to clean this coating. On cleansed skin, you need to apply a care product that will give the material elasticity, renew its color, and most importantly, protect it from fading and prevent further contamination. Depending on the cleaning results, SONAX products are perfect for high-quality care of the steering wheel leather.

— If there was only a little dirt on the steering wheel and you easily cleaned it off with napkins or diluted car shampoo, then you should choose SONAX skin care lotion .

This product will gently remove any remaining dirt and grease from the surface of the steering wheel. Vitamin E in the product will give the skin elasticity and protect it from cracking, and beeswax will prevent rapid contamination and moisture penetration. The steering wheel will look like new, and picking it up after such care will be much more pleasant!

— If the steering wheel was heavily dirty and even after cleaning with diluted car shampoo, dirt remained in the pores and uneven areas of the leather, then SONAX Profiline foam leather cleaner .

The product is designed to clean even old and stubborn dirt from any genuine leather surface. It will easily remove remaining dirt, grease and other substances, returning the surface to its original color, as well as lost softness and velvety. By the way, modified beeswax in the product prevents slipping, which is important when caring for the steering wheel. After treatment with this composition, the steering wheel will look clean, renewed, and soft to the touch.

Regular care will help you avoid greasy shine, stickiness and other unpleasant signs of a dirty steering wheel. After all, sitting in a neat car interior, holding a clean, well-groomed steering wheel in your hands, is undoubtedly a pleasure!

Leather interior - how to care for it?

The most difficult category of stains are natural and artificial dyes, because the leather interior deeply absorbs such contaminants into the structure. Among other things, the light leather of the interior may be stained by a black jacket, in which case it will be impossible to remove the stain with your own hands. Therefore, car owners should avoid contact with the leather interior of objects similar in structure.

Caring for leather interiors is comparable to cleaning the human body: the older the skin, the more careful care and nutrition it requires. Many owners of cars with leather interiors make a big mistake, trying to “rub” the interior to a shine using special sprays and waxes, forgetting that, first of all, the leather needs to be ensured elasticity. It is worth purchasing creams with a high content of oils.

If the interior is very dirty, then you should use a soap solution. It is better to use this product when absolutely necessary, since such a procedure can lead to hardening of the skin, and after it treat the interior with leather conditioner. You should not apply the soap solution directly to the surface - it is better to moisten a sponge in it, and then use it to remove dirt.

Another mistake that car enthusiasts make is using products with a polishing effect when cleaning the steering wheel. Such products are not able to remove dirt, and even when driving a car, the steering wheel will slip out of your hands.

Over time, the skin tends to degrease; this process is accelerated by frequent washing. As a result, the leather interior quickly becomes unusable. Therefore, upon completion of water procedures, it is worth applying nourishing creams to the skin, and the front seats should be “pampered” with cream twice with an interval of half an hour, since they have a greater external impact than the rear ones. You should not leave unabsorbed cream on the surface of the seats, because after drying it hardens and does not allow the leather to stretch properly - cracks form. Unabsorbed cream residues should be removed with a soft cloth.

Not long ago I purchased a RAV 4 III 2012, overall the interior is in decent condition in terms of cleanliness. The steering wheel and automatic transmission knob are a little annoying, they are covered with leather, as can be seen from the photo, the steering wheel also has some perforations in which dirt has clogged. Both the steering wheel and the automatic transmission knob feel slightly greasy to the touch, or something, it’s difficult to describe, the skin seems to have absorbed dirt, or such a feeling. Tell me how to clean the steering wheel and handles to make the leather look clean, closer to new, but the steering wheel should not become slippery. Thanks everyone for the advice.

How to restore leather on your steering wheel at home in 30 minutes

If you do not regularly treat the leather steering wheel with moisturizing and nourishing products, abrasions will appear on it, and the color of the steering wheel will become faded and uneven. This will ruin the appearance of the steering wheel and the entire interior, and worsen tactile sensations while driving. Without care, the leather can become so damaged that it becomes impossible to solve the problem without replacing the braid.

For a decade now, MAVI STEP craftsmen have been using their own method of restoring a leather car steering wheel, which was previously not disclosed outside the company. We decided to make a small gift to car owners and reveal all the cards. In the instructions below, we described in detail how to restore the leather on the steering wheel of a car, using the original technique of the masters of the MAVI STEP company.

Advantages of this technique:

  • minimal waste of time - your leather steering wheel will become like new in 30 minutes;
  • minimal investment - the products used to restore the leather steering wheel contain the maximum concentration of active substances and their consumption rate is scanty;
  • simplicity - even if this is your first time restoring the condition and color of the steering wheel, we guarantee that everything will work out the first time.

Step #1. Cleaning the steering wheel from dust and surface contaminants

We recommend using the MAVI STEP Reagan brush for this. It has two working zones: with medium-hard bristles (for cleaning the main part of the leather product) and with hard bristles (for cleaning seams and other hard-to-reach places).

Dry clean your leather steering wheel as thoroughly as possible - the result you get next depends on it. Pay attention to the seams - they accumulate the most dirt.

Please note → Instead of a brush, you can use a clean cotton cloth for cleaning.

Step No. 2. Deep clean the steering wheel leather with MAVI STEP Total Cleaner

Depending on the degree of contamination of the material, this concentrated cleaner can be used pure or diluted with water. MAVI STEP Total Cleaner deeply cleanses the skin of stubborn dirt, opens its pores and prepares it for further restoration.

To clean your steering wheel with MAVI STEP Total Cleaner, shake the bottle and apply a small amount onto a sponge. Next, walk along the surface of the leather braid of the steering wheel, performing movements with medium pressure in one direction. Repeat cleaning until the sponge remains clean after each use.

Please note → If you bought MAVI STEP Total Cleaner leather cleaner in a 100 ml bottle, we recommend pouring a little of the cleaner into a convenient container and periodically dipping a sponge into it.

Step No. 3. Restoring the color and structure of the car steering wheel leather

At this stage we will use two tools:

  • Skin restoration spray MAVI STEP Grease Spray. A product with a high concentration of natural oils and fats of plant and animal origin. Restores the skin at the structural level, protects its damage under the influence of mechanical stress and UV rays, and creates a lasting shine on the surface. MAVI STEP Grease Spray is the first thing we recommend to car owners who want to know how to restore a leather steering wheel from scuffs.
  • Paint for leather goods MAVI STEP Universal Dye. Permanent, concentrated dye available in six base colours. It is allowed to mix different colors of paint to obtain the desired color and shade, as well as add it to MAVI STEP Effective Leather Care products.

How to restore a leather steering wheel using two products? To do this, we will apply them one by one. Shake the bottle of MAVI STEP Grease Spray and apply a small amount of the product to a clean cotton cloth. Next, with leisurely movements and medium pressure, distribute the product with a cloth over the surface of the leather braid of the steering wheel. Pay attention to the processing of seams - they bear the highest load.

Now that the leather structure has been restored, let's begin restoring the color of the leather steering wheel. To do this, mix several MAVI STEP Universal Dye paints to obtain the desired color. When mixing, use the proportions indicated in the article “How to properly mix paints for leather and shoes to get the desired color.” If the steering wheel braid is black or red, use a base paint of the corresponding color.

When the required color and shade of paint is ready, apply a few drops to the sponge and distribute it over the surface of the steering wheel without strong pressure. Apply paint to the sponge periodically.

After the leather steering wheel has been treated with MAVI STEP Grease Spray and MAVI STEP Universal Dye, carefully inspect its surface. If the result is not what you expected, repeat the alternate application of spray and paint until you get the desired result.

Now that you already understand how to paint a leather car steering wheel and restore its condition, let's move on to the last step - polishing.

Step No. 4. Polish the leather steering wheel with MAVI STEP Grease Spray

To make the surface of the genuine leather “steering wheel” shine and become even more protected from destruction under the influence of mechanical and climatic loads, we polish it with MAVI STEP Grease Spray.

Apply a little spray on the surface of the steering wheel and polish it with a clean cotton cloth with minimal pressure until a lasting shine appears.

This completes the restoration of the steering wheel leather. All the steps described took less than half an hour and a minimal amount of funds. And this is the result we got:

How to restore leather on your steering wheel: brief instructions

Useful tips for car care and operation

Every adequate motorist monitors the cleanliness of his car, washes it outside, vacuums the interior, and also performs wet cleaning. However, very few of us pay due attention to the steering wheel (hereinafter referred to as the steering wheel), because they do not even realize how dirty it is and what a health hazard it can pose...

You won’t believe it, but according to research, the steering wheel of your car is almost 10 times dirtier than a toilet seat! Surprised? Now remember how much time you spend behind the wheel, and then remember how often you washed your hands after contact with the steering wheel. Do you remember? I think most of us rarely do this, because the steering wheel looks clean and there is no desire to wash our hands after it. But in vain...!

In this article, I will talk about how to properly care for your steering wheel so that it is clean and safe for you and others.

Many people will be surprised where bacteria and dirt can come from on the steering wheel? It's all very simple, actually. Before getting into the car, you come into contact with objects and people, after which you open the doors of your car, which are also far from clean. Next, with this “set” you get into the car and transfer all this to the steering wheel of your swallow.

While driving, you intensively spread all the crap on your hands and steering wheel all over the steering wheel, from time to time, transferring some of it to yourself, touching your face or other parts of the body. Also, to all of the above, you should add the sweat that comes from your hands and the dust of the car interior.

All this creates an ideal environment for the proliferation of the most dangerous pathogenic bacteria that “kill” us. This is in short...

In addition, without proper care, the steering wheel not only becomes a breeding ground for bacteria, it wears out rapidly, which is also not good, especially if you need to sell the car. In general, whatever one may say, caring for the steering wheel is an integral part of “car hygiene” that all self-respecting motorists should know about.

Leather steering wheel - how to properly care for it?

Skin care is an art and it takes a long time to master. But if you don’t have a Bugatti or a Ferrari, then I think it’s enough to know a few basic rules.

  1. The first step is to use a soft cloth that will not damage the skin structure.
  2. The second point is that the product should not contain aggressive surfactants, as well as alcohol, which can wash off the paint or dissolve the skin itself.
  3. First, we wipe the steering wheel, clearing it of dirt, after which we apply a protective agent that moisturizes the skin and prevents it from aging and drying out.
  4. At the end, you can apply a conditioner, which will prevent dirt from being absorbed into the leather braid and make the steering wheel more pleasant to the touch.

Caring for a steering wheel made of plastic or a composite composition is more trivial. All you need is a clean cloth, some shampoo or other mild cleaning agent, and a plastic protectant.

  1. First of all, we wash everything properly, but under no circumstances use scrapers or sharp objects. They may leave scratches or damage the structure (pattern) of the steering wheel.
  2. Next, we wipe everything dry and cover the steering wheel with a protective agent, it can be a product for plastic, wax, etc.

Driving care - daily prevention

The above measures are usually carried out in severe cases, and also once or twice a month, depending on the intensity of use of the car. However, nothing replaces prevention. Proper daily care of your steering wheel will avoid heavy contamination and will also make it impossible for bacteria to grow on your steering wheel. So, all you need to do is follow a few simple rules.

  1. Always wash your hands before and after traveling, or at least clean your hands with wet wipes.
  2. After a trip or at least once every 1-2 days, wipe the steering wheel with a damp soft cloth or use special wipes for this. It is important that the wipes do not contain alcohol or aggressive surfactants. In my opinion, the best option for this would be baby wipes; it seems to me that the manufacturer is unlikely to add harmful “chemicals” to them.
  3. If the steering wheel is leather, do not forget to impregnate it with a special protective compound once a week.

Remember, following simple rules will help you avoid big problems. After all, it is much easier to spend a few minutes maintaining your hygiene, as well as your car, than to face big troubles in the future and the need to replace the steering wheel or at least re-upholster the steering wheel. Having made it a rule to perform certain tasks, over time you will not even notice how they become a good habit.

How to choose an interior leather cleaner

Before you buy a car interior leather cleaning product, you need to decide on the requirements that it must satisfy. It is believed that a good car interior leather cleaner should:

  • efficiently cope with the removal of any contaminants (oil, mud, dust, etc.), without harming the surface;
  • moisturize and nourish the skin with nutrients for its long-term use and beautiful appearance;
  • if necessary, restore the damaged structure or lost former color;
  • create a special oleophobic film that protects the skin from the harmful effects of moisture;
  • provide protective polishing during processing;
  • destroy harmful pathogenic microorganisms (harmful both to humans, in particular, their respiratory system, and to the surface of skin elements);
  • neutralize unpleasant odors (instead, it is advisable to distribute your own pleasant aroma).

The next point that you need to pay attention to is the aggregate form of the composition. Thus, currently on the market there are skin cleansers in aerosols, powders, oils and creams. As practice shows, the quality of cleaning is not affected by the state of aggregation, so the choice must be made based on the points listed above and efficiency (we will mention this below). Despite the varieties, the method of using them is approximately the same, and consists in applying a certain amount of the composition to the contaminated surface and rubbing it with a rag or napkin.

When selecting a cleanser for old (including worn) leather, you must choose products that contain special oils. They are designed to create a protective layer on the skin after cleansing, soften it and prevent stretching. In this case, it also makes sense to buy softening pastes or creams with a gloss effect and tinting.

DIY interior leather cleaner

In addition to the fact that you can purchase special cleaners for the leather interior of your car, there are so-called “folk” cleaning methods, that is, using various household compounds. One of them is:

Alcohol-based wipes (antiseptic) . Their children's, refreshing and deodorizing analogues will not work. And the composition of antiseptic wipes includes a small amount of alcohol and surfactants, and with their help it is possible to completely remove minor, non-ingrained contaminants.

Laundry or toilet soap is also used to clean interior leather. Liquid is also suitable. However, before use, it is advisable to read its composition so that it does not contain additional specific additives, but only surfactants (this parameter can be indirectly determined by the smell; additives usually have a pungent, repulsive odor). The method of using soap is traditional; for cleaning you need a container with water (bucket, basin), rags (foam sponge) and soap itself. You can dissolve the soap in water or, if it has a liquid consistency, apply directly to the stained area. And remove it with a rag. If the stain is not old and did not appear as a result of chemical reactions, then, as a rule, soap copes with the stains.

It makes sense to use a soft shoe brush to remove dirt from small pores and cracks in the leather.

After removing a stain from a leather surface, it must be wiped dry. It is advisable to then apply a protective cream (conditioner) . It contains oils, silicone, wax. If this is not done, then there is a risk that the leather will become stiff and even crack over time. In the case of professional cleaners, this is not necessary (unless expressly stated otherwise), since the listed substances are already present in their composition.

There is another interesting “life hack”. So, to clean leather surfaces, you can use a mixture of water and ammonia in a ratio of 2:1 , that is, for example, 100 ml of water should be mixed with 50 ml of alcohol. The resulting mixture can be applied to the contaminated surface using a sprayer, and then the dirt can be removed with a rag or sponge. If you don’t have a sprayer, you can simply soak a rag in the solution and use it to remove the dirt. Reviews found on the Internet suggest that this product is very effective at removing even old stains.

Conclusion

Finally, I would like to note that in different stores (and even more so in regions of the country), the range of leather cleansers may differ. This is mainly due to logistics. In addition, new products regularly enter the market, thereby displacing older ones. Try to buy reliable and proven cleaners, including those from the compiled rating. Whenever possible, make purchases in trusted stores.

In 2020, the leader of the rating, Hi Gear Proline Leather Cleaner & Conditioner, has practically ceased to be available on sale. Doctor Wax has become more popular. Prices, compared to 2018, when this rating was compiled, for all products on average increased by 50-80 rubles, except Liqui Moly increased in price by 400 rubles.

It is worth noting that for the summer of 2021, Grass Leather Cleaner products have become quite popular, article number - 131105. Sold in a 500 ml container, cost - 300 rubles. Gently cleans any leather surface. Also, the LAVR Leather Cleaner, article number LN1470L, has become quite popular. Sold in a 185 ml container, price - 170 rubles. It perfectly cleans leather upholstery, but, according to drivers, it has a rather aggressive composition. Therefore, before using it on the upholstery of your car, it is recommended to test it on a small, inconspicuous area of the interior leather.
