Luaz 969m, also known by the name “Volyn”, was the first Soviet all-terrain vehicle, which was intended not for the needs of the military, but for personal use. This small car, but distinguished by high off-road properties, was produced from 1966 to 2001. What are the features of LUAZ?

The production of the car in question is carried out by a Ukrainian automobile manufacturing enterprise, whose production facilities are located in Lutsk.

For a long period, the plant was engaged in the production of off-road vehicles. It is worth considering that the production capacity of the automaker in question was used to produce other models, for example, ZAZ. This plant is better known for the LAUZ brand, under which the famous high-performance vehicle was produced.

What are the features of LUAZ? There are quite a lot of them:

6. As for the center differential, it is missing. That is why when driving on paved roads, the rear axle must be disengaged. Slipping of one of the wheels can be prevented by forced blocking. 7. The suspension type is torsion bar, mounted on trailing arms. This ensures greater wheel travel. Initially, 13-inch wheels were installed. 8. Attention is also paid to other elements of the car, for example, optics or increased crankcase protection. Optical tuning can only be done when purchasing ready-made designs. As for protecting the crankcase and other elements, you will have to do all this yourself.

In the mid-1950s, NAMI developed a promising type of minicars and their units, planned for development during the implementation of the Seven-Year Plan for the Development of the National Economy (1959-1965). This type included three types of cars: a four-seater general-purpose microcar intended for sale for individual use (the future ZAZ-965); a two-seater microcar for disabled people, designed to replace wheelchairs from the Serpukhov plant (the experienced NAMI-031, did not go into production) and a light multi-purpose cargo-passenger vehicle, designed to transport four people, or two people and 200–250 kg of cargo.

The development of the latter concept was started by NAMI in 1958 together with the Irbit Motorcycle Plant with the construction of a prototype NAMI-049 “Ogonyok”, the design of which was largely based on the previously developed military amphibious all-terrain vehicle NAMI-032G (late 1956 or early 1957). The car had a steel supporting base and body frame (pillars, windshield frame, tailgate opening), onto which fiberglass outer panels (tails, doors, hood, side) were attached. As a result, an optimal combination of weight was achieved - only 752 kg in running order - and dynamic qualities - the maximum speed with a 22-horsepower Irbit MD-65 engine was 80 km/h, as well as fuel consumption - 6.7–7.1 l/ 100 km, depending on road conditions. Independent torsion bar suspensions on trailing arms, permanent drive to the front axle with the rear axle being disengaged, lockable wheel differentials, and wheel gearboxes were used. Greetings to all who have come. My “dancing with a tambourine” around Memz continues. He came to me, or rather, a new connecting rod with a pin “flew in”, bought it on Avito for the 4th cylinder. Now you can continue the assembly.

So, the connecting rod, washed from preservative lubricant, was successfully implanted in conjunction with the piston and weighed. Luck again, weight 1121, 2 grams less than the others.

Connecting rod of the 1st cylinder with a weight of 1126 g. ground down. I’ll say right away that I didn’t lose weight ideally, the difference was 1-2 grams. I think that it is not critical for a low-speed engine. Next, I installed the piston rings on the “beauty” pistons, cut out an improvised “brace” of rings from a can, which completely coped with its task. At the end of the day, I got so good at it that I could push a piston with new rings into the cylinder in seconds.

There was an issue with installing the rings. I had a new set of rings, opened it and began installation. I installed all the rings, put on the last oil scraper and one more remains EXTRA. What the fuck?

I think, well, I probably missed one thing, I started removing all the pistons from the cylinders, and this is again lubrication, again adjusting the joints of the rings, and installation in the cylinders. In general, I checked everything, everything is in place. The ring turned out to be superfluous in the set. I didn’t remove the old ones, they are all on old pistons, which means it has nowhere to come from. So it goes.

After this, I prepared to install the ShPG into the cylinder block. I removed the pan, prepared the sealant, clamps, gaskets, and the “soul went to heaven.”

Before installation, I measured the height of the cylinders from the landing plane, there was a difference of 0.5 mm, so I placed a gasket from the kit under the 2 cylinders, covering it between layers of sealant. After installation, the cylinders on both sides were in the same plane.

There were some problems. I put in the 3rd cylinder (1st by numbering), attach it to the knee, observing all the nuances, and decided to turn the crankshaft to check if the rotation is normal. AND OPA-NA. WEDGE. The crankshaft rests on the skirt of the 1st and 3rd piston. What the. How so? It turns out that the pistons of group A are higher or lower, as you wish, than the pistons of group B by 2mm, which I had originally installed. Well, why didn’t I check and measure everything in advance before installation? Lack of experience and lack of care take their toll.

Okay, I removed the 1st cylinder, ground off the corners of the protruding piston skirt, where it touched the “knee”, tried everything on, the knee goes through without touching, there is a gap of 2 millimeters, I think that’s enough. Of course, I had to remove and apply new sealant, etc. got a little confused. And on the 3rd piston, I ground off the contact point with a file without disassembling the “assembly”. The connecting rods were tightened with a torque wrench with a force of 5 kg. It was scary at some point, I thought now I was going to vomit something, but everything was not normal.

As a result: everything is set to rotate tightly by hand, it is easier to rotate with a ratchet, the pistons “fly” tightly with a certain sound, everything is lubricated. Before installation, I checked the holes in the knee and found them clean (I missed this point earlier). I installed the oil pump tube with sealant, also with a temperature sensor on the pan. I degreased the pan and also applied sealant WITHOUT A GASKET, I didn’t like it from the kit. Not only did it tear when I took it out, but the holes didn’t line up. I think why am I going to take a steam bath with her.

I’ll say right away that it sucks to do something without having the right specialist at hand. tool, since you have to constantly invent something from what is at hand, this takes a lot of time and the repair process is drawn out. So the task was to dry out the valves, wash the heads, clean everything possible, especially the inlet and outlet channels. It took half a day to invent a puller (pictured) - one of its final versions.

When it became clear that all this was bullshit, I went the old proven way - a hammer, knobs and sockets from a set. He placed the head under the valve, with gentle blows from the top of the hammer through the extension with the head, struck the crackers and the upper plate, and only then, using an improvised handle, squeezing the springs, he calmly removed the crackers and springs.

The process began and after about 15 minutes I had desiccated everything.

As a result, I found 2 internal springs broken, the breaks were not fresh, which means they did not burst while removing the crackers.

The channels were not very dirty, but I still had to spend a lot of time on them about this a little later. In order not to wash my hair with gasoline and inhale its fumes, I decided to use kitchen chemicals. From the 4th time, more or less, not everything went sour, of course I “burned” my hands with this chemistry.

In general, there is a lot of work with heads and you have to devote a lot of time to them. This includes restoring the studs of the exhaust pipes, cleaning the intercostal spaces and washing the entire head, drying out and grinding in the valves, replacing sagging springs, cleaning the intake and exhaust channels, seats... cleaning the pusher tubes, grinding, and I haven’t yet changed or pressed out the valve guides... generally brrr...

In the evening, having played enough of “Moidodyra”, I went through my supplies, dug up the valves, chose the ones I liked, markings on the exhaust AK-7 and AK-3, on the inlet with the internal AK 10. A little oil and in the guides, of course there is production on them, but it’s still small resemble.
