How to reverse into a box correctly - instructions

For most drivers, at the initial stage, entering the box in reverse is problematic, which is why they need to retake the exams at the MREO traffic police department. Therefore, step-by-step instructions must be followed.

In reality, reversing into the pit is much more difficult than driving into the pit. This contributes to involuntary contact with the walls and the occurrence of scratches.

To eliminate such moments and perform them correctly, you need to study the most common errors, methods of dealing with them and the basic rules.

To complete the exercise, an equipped area similar to a garage is used. You need to drive into it without hitting the walls.

Site size includes:

  • the width of the car with an allowance of one meter,
  • car length s + one meter,
  • an exercise strip the size of two car lengths.

With such dimensions, entering from the front is practically impossible, which is why it is recommended to do this from the rear.

The essence of the boxing exercise at the race track

It is necessary to study what changes are in effect from 2021. Entering a box in reverse is also called maneuvering and reversing.

The second change is that in the parking lot you not only need to enter correctly without catching anything, but also exit just as successfully. Only in this case will this exercise be considered completed.

Other changes that make up its essence include:

  • presence of mandatory markings,
  • This is done only when reverse gear is engaged once,
  • time limit - only 120 seconds are given,
  • instead of racks, cones are used,
  • The car is now parked closer to the parking lot, which complicates the task and increases the application value.

The main purpose of this exercise is to teach drivers how to drive into a parking space, garage, or between two cars. The bottom line is that often there may not be enough space for free entry, and therefore driving in reverse will be more effective than driving forward.

Let's celebrate! During the test, the person taking the exam shows the inspector the acquired skills without causing damage to his or her nearby car or garage walls.

The essence of the exercise necessarily includes observing the dimensions of the garage or race track. The main ones are considered to be:

  • length of the base vehicle – 4400mm, width – 1800mm:
  • box length – 5400mm,
  • its width is 2800 mm.

If the racetrack has a box of this size, it is possible to pass the exercise in the exam on a car with a length of 4100 mm.

Penalty points for the exercise “Reversing into the box”

  • The candidate did not complete the exercise within the allotted 2 minutes – 3 points.
  • Knocked down a cone, drove over a solid marking line - 3 points.
  • Did not complete the exercise for engaging reverse gear once - 3 points.
  • Having entered the pit, did not cross the control line marking along the front dimension of the car - 3 points.
  • Having left the exercise, did not cross the “AB” line - 3 points.
  • During the exercise the engine stalled – 1 point.

If you score 3 points, the site exam is not passed.

Old version of the article about boxing until 09/01/2016.

In this article we will look at one of the ways to perform the exam exercise: Reversing into a box (garage).

How to drive into the garage correctly - stages of the exercise

It is not always the case that when a driver successfully passes an exam or even receives a long-awaited license, he or she can complete it in his or her own garage without any problems. It may take time to work through.

To do this correctly, you should:

  1. Drive the mirrored right side up to the garage wall as close as possible and turn the steering wheel to the left. At this time, the driver looks in the right mirror, because the distance between the right side of the car and the garage wall can be only 150mm.
  2. After this, the reverse dimensions are turned on, and smooth movement is carried out towards the garage. It is worth noting that in the case of comparing the back door with a garage entrance gate, you need to unscrew the steering wheel.
  3. Then the movement continues. If the car is in the correct position, the driver aligns the wheels and continues moving to the desired position.
  4. The final stage is to set the car to neutral gear speed and secure it with the handbrake.

Check in to boxing

The task of the exercise “Entering into a box” or “Entering into a box in reverse” is to drive along the trajectory shown in the figure and reverse into a conditional box without hitting any of the limiting posts.

This exercise has some similarities to the “Three Step Turn” exercise. Those. To make a turn, it is best to use the entire width of the area (two car lengths) as much as possible, then choose a stopping place and only then drive into the conditional boundaries in reverse.

In this case, it is necessary to remember how the dynamic dimensions of the car change, as well as the fact that when turning, the car’s wheels move in circles, the center of which is located on the extension of the rear axle, and the radius changes by the angle of rotation of the front wheels.

To perform a pit stop, you will need to be able to turn the steering wheel with an interception and the ability to move in reverse, driving the car with one hand (the most comfortable position when reversing in this case is sitting on the floor sideways and looking out the rear window).

How to do the boxing exercise

This exercise can be performed on either the left or right side. Consider the option of starting the movement from the left side of the box.

From the Start line, you begin a slow movement towards the box - take to the right so as to get as close to the goal as possible.

As soon as the right mirror aligns with the “wall” of the box closest to the direction of travel, immediately turn the wheels all the way to the left and continue moving to the boundary of the area (this may be markings, limiting posts may be installed). Before the border, quickly turn the steering wheel back and put the wheels in the “straight” position. You stop.

Engage reverse gear, turn sideways backwards (left hand on the steering wheel, right hand on the back of the passenger seat, eyes looking out the rear window of the car) and begin to slowly move backwards with the clutch fully depressed.

You will need to slightly turn the steering wheel to the right to direct the rear bumper of the car into the gate between the pillars and when the car takes a position almost parallel to the box, put the wheels straight, drive all the way and stop without hitting the rear pillar.

Next - handbrake - disengage the gear - remove your feet from the brake and clutch pedals. The exercise “Reversing into the box” is completed.

For those who have to drive from right to left, the procedure remains the same. Only at the moment you start reversing can you navigate using the left rear view mirror, but a little later, after you’ve driven a couple of meters, it’s better to turn around and sit half sideways back, as discussed above.

There is another option for passing the exam: entering the box in reverse. It is, one might say, unofficial, and is carried out according to a simplified scheme. But such an option exists and, perhaps, someone will have to take it this way.

It consists in the fact that you just need to leave the conventional garage, then turn right or left, and then also turn back, while observing all the rules for starting and stopping the car.

Thus, when entering a conditional garage (there are no questions about leaving it), you need to, while moving in reverse, first turn at a right angle, then align the wheels and drive between the racks already on straight wheels or adjusting the trajectory of movement with the steering wheel. One of these options for parking a car is described in the article Driving. Part 9. Parking.

During training, learn to perform all variants of boxing runs in one go and try to enter from different angles. Those. put the car in reverse once, released the clutch, drove in and stopped. Then during the exam your arms and legs will do everything automatically. Well, in life, on the real road, all options will come in handy.

Step-by-step instructions for entering the box

It is immediately important to take into account that it is somewhat more difficult to enter a garage than a box at a race track. This is due to the fact that there will be tools, boxes and other obstacles in the garage. The car owner must take this into account so as not to bump into it and damage the paintwork or tires.

So, step by step execution:

  • the inspector gives the command to drive from the starting line, and the driver carries it out,
  • then movement is carried out “in a straight line” parallel to line BE,
  • at this moment it is necessary to maintain a distance: it should be no more than 50cm from BE,
  • then, visually from the driver, the CD line will be located on the opposite wall. When this line becomes visible, you should stop,
  • Some drivers, when performing such exercises, greatly increase steering resources, but in most cases it is recommended to stop,
  • It is better to pass an existing landmark slightly than not to reach it. In addition, it is recommended to remember that if the visual “CD” line is aligned with the driver’s shoulder, then while driving, when turning the wheels, the car will press against it, which can be corrected by turning the wheels in a different direction. When comparing this line, for example, with the front wheels, which are turned all the way, the car will approach the opposite wall of the box, which makes the exercise more complicated: you won’t be able to engage reverse gear once,
  • Next, turn the steering wheel to the left. It is worth noting that with a car with power steering, this must be done as carefully as possible, without pressing the steering wheel all the way, otherwise the power steering pump will be broken,
  • then a stop is made without crossing the long limit line of cones (AF), the steering wheel is turned to the right, and the movement begins backwards. Movement is controlled by monitoring the right mirror,
  • After aligning the car parallel to the “CD”, stop it, align the wheels and continue driving in reverse. When approaching the control broken line and crossing it, immediately stop the vehicle and raise the handbrake in neutral gear,
  • Then the inspector demands to leave. It is important to remember here that maximum twisting of the steering wheel to the left is permissible only after comparing the goal line with the center of the front door windows, otherwise there is a risk of knocking off the cone or crossing the markings with the left wheel,
  • The exercise ends after crossing the stop line (“AB”) and stopping the vehicle.

Step-by-step instructions for the exercise entering the garage

It is most effective to master driving into a garage at a race track using step-by-step instructions. This technique allows you to bring all actions to automation. Carefully performing maneuvers in life will prevent you from getting into an accident and causing injury to others. The algorithm for performing the exercise is as follows:

  1. We stop near the “START” line. We are waiting for the inspector/teacher’s command to start moving;
  2. We move straight ahead. The right mirror should be as close to flag “B” as possible. You can clearly see the picture below. We stop when the point is in the middle of the back and front doors;
  3. Turn the steering wheel to the extreme left position. On new models with power steering, this action is performed easily, on older models - with diligence;
  4. We move smoothly to the left, while simultaneously monitoring the turn of the vehicle in the mirrors. Your task is to see point D. The optimal display is to have a gap between the cone and the car of 11 cm;
  5. Before you start, do not forget to look ahead, as you can cross the conditional line. In a real situation, this could be a pedestrian or another vehicle. If point D is not visible and the limit strip is close, stop;
  6. Turn the steering wheel to the extreme right position. We engage reverse gear and begin to shift smoothly;
  7. We carefully look through the right side mirror for flag D. We stop when the gap we already know is 11 cm;
  8. set the steering wheel in a straight position. We begin a smooth movement back;
  9. We control through the side mirrors the smoothness of the car’s entry into the makeshift garage;
  10. we stop when the rear approaches point “C”;
  11. without jerking we drive right or left in first gear;
  12. The steering wheel must be turned in the required direction when the conditional line “BD” has reached the middle of the car.

Entering the garage is not particularly difficult. The main thing is to develop skills, feel the dimensions of the car and move off smoothly.

Basic mistakes and how to avoid them?

The main mistakes when driving into a garage in reverse include:

  1. Knocking down cones (pegs). Often this error occurs when the car is aligned too late, or, conversely, too early. The third pole gets knocked down during a fairly strong entry. Most often, all three cones are confused by the rear view mirrors. Those taking the exam should remember that only 2 pegs can be knocked down when performing this exercise; if three or more are caught, the grade “fail” will be given. But you should be more careful not when observing, so as not to knock the cone down with a mirror, but also so as not to cross the line with your wheels.
  2. Incomplete entry into the box. This error can be corrected by driving the required distance.

Key Points to Remember

Moving backwards always requires increased attention. Any haste or incorrect assessment of the situation on the road when driving a car backwards in real conditions can lead to an accident, and when taking the exam at a training site, it can lead to the fact that the examinee will not receive a license.

All students studying to receive a VP must remember that the student is given 2 minutes to complete the exercise “Entering a garage in reverse” and the right to turn on the reverse speed only once. It is allowed to knock down cones, but no more than 2 pieces. If you receive 3 (or more) penalty points, the exercise is considered failed!

Below is a table describing all violations for which the examinee is fined when entering the pit in reverse:

Type of violationFine. points
p/p123
1The engine stalled while driving on the site
2For every cone knocked down
3The standard was fulfilled for more than 2 minutes
4The examinee engaged reverse gear more than once
5At least 1 wheel of the vehicle crossed the solid marking line
6The student did not drive completely into the “garage” (the front bumper of the vehicle did not cross the “3–6” line) and turned off the gear
7After leaving the “box”, the examinee did not cross the “1–2” line

Penalties for possible errors

For the following violations, the candidate receives penalty points:

PointsViolation
1Collision with one or two wheels on a continuous marking line
Engine stalling while the candidate is performing an exercise
3Knocking down cones and crossing continuous markings
Repeatedly shifting reverse gear
Exiting an exercise without crossing the “AB” line
Failure to complete the exercise within the allotted 2 minutes.
Incomplete crossing of the control marking line along the front clearance of the vehicle upon arrival

Important! If the candidate receives 3 penalty points, the exam fails.

Exercise “Entering the box” or how to enter the garage at the race track

Exercises on the racetrack begin at the starting line. To do this, you need to carefully drive up to the lane, without disturbing it in any way, put the gearshift lever in the neutral position and raise the handbrake. The actions at the beginning of the movement are performed in the reverse order. When starting, you need to shift the gearbox and only then release the handbrake.

The exercise is considered completed after the car is placed on the parking brake at the finish line. It should be remembered that the correctness of these simple operations is closely monitored by the examiner. It is advisable to immediately practice these actions until they become automatic, without thinking about it in each specific case.

The notorious “overpass”, or slide exercise on a race track, is of utmost importance in mastering driving skills. The essence of the exercise is to practice the correct sequence of actions when starting to move up an inclined plane or, in other words, up a mountain.

So, depress the clutch pedal and move the gearshift knob to the first position. Without releasing the clutch, with your right foot we begin to smoothly increase the engine speed with the gas pedal. When the tachometer needle approaches the three thousand rpm mark, slowly release the clutch. The revolutions will begin to fall and when the reading reaches a little more than one thousand, we fix the position of the clutch pedal approximately in the middle position. We lower the handbrake down and start moving, regulating the speed with the gas pedal.

The exercise area is a curved corridor with two smooth turns. The subject’s task is to drive along a given trajectory without crossing the side lines or hitting the cones. To successfully complete the task, you must choose the correct trajectory of movement, making turns along a large radius.

When driving a car with a manual transmission, it is recommended to fully release the clutch and be careful with the gas pedal. In this case, you can achieve the necessary smoothness of movement, which will simplify the task.

Penalty points are awarded for knocking down marking equipment, stopping the engine, reversing, and hitting a road marking line.

Nuances when passing the exercise

Often the inspector arrives later than the candidates, sometimes by 30-60 minutes. This time can be used rationally by agreeing with the instructor so that he allows you to try to perform several exercises on your own in order to practice.

Before starting the test, the person taking the exam should already know that the surface of the race track is often laid at an angle, which can significantly worsen the situation when passing the exercise, because the car can roll back even on a seemingly flat area.

Let's celebrate! Therefore, even during training, you should remember and evaluate the terrain of the racetrack, and in certain situations, press the brake a little earlier, in others, hold it longer.

What other nuances should be taken into account when performing the exercise “entering the box in reverse”:

  • if during training the dimensions of the garage were set a little smaller, then passing the exercise will be much easier,
  • it should be performed at minimum speed,
  • If possible, it is advisable to drive at idle speed, without using the gas pedal.

Learning to drive a car from scratch is not an easy task.

For example, many people fail in the exercise of driving or driving into a garage in reverse. You have to retake it and pay extra money. Many cadets of automobile schools do not pass their exams after studying without completing the required maneuvers in a car.

Today, the article describes in detail how to properly prepare for driving a vehicle independently. Graduates of driving training schools spend many hours in a special area intended for training. They are called autodromes. Future drivers train on them how to enter a garage and perform other complex maneuvers. In general, on the site, future drivers learn the skill of driving a car. By studying at a driving school, students receive theoretical knowledge.

Practice subsequently driving on roads without accidents, taught with the help of a driving instructor.

Day after day, over the course of long training, course participants acquire skills that allow them to successfully pass exams for traffic police officers and receive their coveted rights. Driving a car into a personal garage and driving out of the garage correctly is a difficult task for some experienced car enthusiasts, not to mention beginners. The fact that this is true is evidenced by chips and scratches on the external fragments of car bodies. It happens when a car is parked incorrectly.

Fixing minor external paint damage to the body costs money if the work is entrusted to specialists in automobile workshops. The operation of driving into a garage in reverse is a particular difficulty for young drivers.

An experienced driver or a young driver who has learned the art of driving on a race track will be able to correctly carry out the maneuver. A special exercise, driving into a garage at a race track, develops practical skills among school cadets.

A special area has been allocated at the circuit, furnished with special signs imitating gates and garage walls along the perimeter.

If a course participant knocks down at least one sign, he starts all over again.

› In order for a novice driver to be 100% prepared for any life situations, he must be able to drive his car perfectly.

One of the most difficult maneuvers for any motorist is parking in reverse, because when driving like this you don’t have much visibility, and it’s not easy to control the car’s progress. But it is especially difficult to park in a narrow garage or box in reverse without denting the car.

To practice this skill, there is an exercise called “Boxing”. We will provide step-by-step instructions for completing it below.

The point of the exercise is to ensure that you can confidently reverse in tight spaces and maneuver normally.

This will be useful not only for entering the garage, but also for parking.

Of course, parking backwards is not so easy, but you can get out much faster.

The exercise is carried out on a special site, but there is no garage or box on it. To create a “garage”, cones or signs are used, which are placed at a distance of approximately 2.8-3 meters from each other in width and 5.5 m in length (dimensions of a standard garage). To get the optimal garage size, you usually simply add 1 meter to the width and length of the car on which the exercise is performed.

By the way, cars that have dimensions no shorter than the base vehicle (4.4 m) are suitable for such an exercise. If the car is smaller, then the size of the garage is reduced proportionally so that the driver of a compact car does not get an advantage when performing the exercise. In addition to the garage itself, they also mark the line along which you will need to move.

In order to successfully pass this exercise, you need to go through the following steps:

  • Perform a stop.
  • Carefully drive into the garage in reverse so that the entire body of the car is in the garage.
  • Stop at the starting line.
  • Drive a certain distance in a straight line (sometimes this stage is missing).
  • Exit the garage, then either cross the start line or turn in the opposite direction, following the instructions of the instructor.

At first glance, it seems that there is nothing complicated in the scheme of this exercise.

Basic mistakes

At first, when a novice driver is just beginning to master the art of driving, he cannot correctly assess the dimensions of his vehicle, the distance to various obstacles, and the area of the parking space. And theoretical knowledge alone will not be enough; practical skills and an understanding of the sequence of actions are needed. It is necessary to ensure that you can freely park in the box in reverse at a right angle to the end side.

On the training field, markings are made 3 m long and 1 m wide. And although the garage is somewhat wider, it is necessary to fit into these dimensions, because you need to open the doors and get out of the car. The parking space is usually narrower. When performing the training, you need to imagine that the sides of the specified rectangle are the boundaries of the walls of the garage or neighboring cars when parking in a parking lot. The reverse parking scheme for a garage is as follows.
