If the backlight of the instrument cluster, headlights, cigarette lighter or stove fan stops working for no reason, this is a reason to check the condition of the fuses.
In the Volkswagen Polo 5 (2010-2021), fuses are located in two places: in the cabin and under the hood. To replace them, no special tools are required. The exception is the power fuse block attached to the battery.
The article describes the location of fuses and relays and a diagram of their decoding.
Fuse boxes in the engine compartment
In the repair and operating instructions they are designated as mounting blocks (MB) A and C. The first includes fuse links SA1-SA7 for protecting high-current consumers. For the second - fuses No. 1-6. The purpose is given in the table.

Block in the cabin
In the repair and operating instructions, the mounting block in the interior of the Volkswagen Polo 5 is designated by the letter B. The fuses and relays in it are divided into 2 parts and are located on the left side of the instrument panel: the fuses are under the steering column, the relays are under the lower decorative trim of the instrument panel.
Circuit breakers
They are hidden under the lid.
On its reverse side there are tweezers for replacing burnt out elements.

Where are the fuses located?
Powerful consumers (rear window heating element, cooling system fan, air conditioning compressor clutch and others) are connected via a relay. The fuses are installed in three mounting blocks, two of which A and C are located in the engine compartment, on the battery, and the third B is in the instrument panel under the steering column. The relays are installed in a separate block, on the left under the instrument panel (above the fuse mounting block). Mounting block A (on the battery) contains power fuses rated for a rated current of 175 to 40 A.

Removal and replacement process
To replace, you will need a multimeter, a slotted screwdriver and a 10 mm wrench.
Under the hood
To replace the fuse in block C, simply remove the cover from it, unfasten the plastic latches and pull out the blown element with your fingers. For block A the procedure is more complicated:
- Press the latch and open the MB cover.
- Check the condition of the fuses:
- Switch the multimeter to ohmmeter mode.
- Apply one probe to each terminal in turn, and the second to the L-shaped metal plate. If the device shows 1 or infinity, this means that the fuse link connected to the terminal has burned out.
- Unscrew the 5 nuts securing the terminals and disconnect them.
- Unscrew the nut on the C block side and press the plastic lock on the battery side.
- Remove the power fuse block.
- Install the removed elements in reverse order.
How to remove and disassemble the cigarette lighter
A device with similar functions is available in any modern car, including the Volkswagen Polo sedan. Any car enthusiast knows where this device is located. Drivers often use this device for other purposes than its intended purpose, causing damage to occur.
The device of the block is simple. The cigarette lighter consists of:
- Connector for connection.
- A metal part that includes a special spiral.
The operating principle is also simple. When you press the button, the circuit closes, which causes heating. The device has a special relay that turns off the system when the maximum temperature is reached. The circuit opens and heating stops.
Using the cigarette lighter, you can charge gadgets using special adapters. This element can fail if you connect devices that require high voltage to it.
The second most common malfunction is loosening of the socket where the receiver is located.
The cigarette lighter has 3 wires. Red is considered the main one. Another yellow wire is led directly to the light filter, which is responsible for the correct operation of the backlight. The black wire goes to minus.
The most common malfunction is a broken wiring; in this situation, the cigarette lighter will not work. In some cases, wires burn out due to sudden voltage surges.
The problem may arise due to oxidation of the contacts.
Sometimes the cause of a breakdown is a burnt-out element.
Repair
If the defect is eliminated, the cigarette lighter must be replaced. For this:
- The ignition is turned off, the hood is opened in order to gain access to the terminals and remove the negative clip.
- Small scissors with curved ends are inserted into the cartridge, and it is pulled out along with the block. You can make the process easier by pressing on the locking elements.
- Then the filter latches are moved back.
- Then a new part is installed in this place. Repairing an old element is rarely done.
Where are the electrical circuits located?
Volkswagen Polo Sedan vehicles use a wiring diagram with three fuse blocks and one relay block. These elements are installed in the engine compartment and in the cabin.
In the engine compartment
The block located in the engine compartment contains two groups of fuses - six for conventional inserts (located in a small unit on the side) and seven for more powerful elements.
The Polo battery with the unit installed is shown in the photo below:

In the video, user Alexander M removes the fuse box from his 2015 Polo. The overall design of the unit and the location of the fuses are clearly visible.
The relay unit is located behind the side end cover of the instrument panel.
On the 2021 Polo Sedan, the elements are installed according to the following scheme (shaded positions P01, P06 and P11 to P15 are empty and are reserve):
Relay block diagram
The location of the relay in the Volkswagen Polo Sedan block is shown in the table:
Position | Purpose |
P02 | Optional element for turning on the heated windshield |
P03 | Starter blocker when the engine is running |
P04 | Fuel supply directly to the engine |
P05 | General power supply |
P07 | Responsible for side light |
P08 | Fuel supply from tank |
P09 | Microclimate system |
P10 | Unloading (so-called relay for contact "x") |
Two thermal fuses (part number - 443937105B) with a rating of 15 amperes are installed above the relay block. These fusible links protect the power window motor circuits. The parts almost never fail; when overheated, they open and restore the integrity of the circuit when cooled.
How to replace
You can change the fuses in the engine block of the 2012 Polo Sedan according to the following scheme:
- Turn off the ignition.
- Open the cover of the interior unit and take tweezers.
- Open the hood and remove the plastic fuse box cover.
- Find the failed fuse and replace it with a part of the same rating. The use of more powerful inserts or homemade products is strictly prohibited.
- If one of the screw fuses is damaged, then to replace it you need to unscrew the eight nuts securing the inserts.
- After all manipulations, it is necessary to check the functionality of the circuit. If the insert burns out again, then it is necessary to analyze the wiring in more detail, determining the cause of the short circuit.
- Place the tweezers in their original place and close the block covers.
Installation of a new fusible link in the interior block of a 2014 Polo follows the same instructions. The requirements for the fuse rating and the verification method are similar.
