How often should you change the air filter on a Renault Logan?

As you know, an engine requires air, fuel and oil to operate. For each of them, the car design provides appropriate filters. They are considered consumable items with a limited service life. When the car is under warranty, the auto mechanics of the service center independently know when and which filters should be changed. The driver is only required to regularly attend technical inspections. But as soon as the warranty ends, you must personally monitor the condition of the filters. In this material we will tell you when and how to change the Renault Logan air filter.

When should a replacement be made?

In the Renault Logan operating instructions, the designers stipulated that the filter element is replaced every 15 thousand kilometers for cars with a 16-valve engine and every 30 thousand for 8-valve engines.

Motorists recommend changing the air filter every 8-10 thousand mileage . The time interval differs from the manufacturer's instructions. There are reasons for this. Operating conditions for Renault Logan in Russia and other post-Soviet countries are extreme. In Europe the roads are cleaner and better.

You will have to change the air filter ahead of schedule if the following problems arise during operation of the Renault Logan:

  • Gasoline consumption has increased sharply;
  • “dips” appeared when accelerating;
  • the car does not “pull”;
  • the engine combustion chamber is clogged;
  • frequent contamination of the throttle valve.

Which filter manufacturer should I choose?

There is an opinion that the manufacturer of the air filter is unimportant. But remember that low-quality auto parts lead to breakdowns of the vehicle and internal combustion engine (ICE).

There are hundreds of manufacturers of consumables, including air filters, on the automotive spare parts market. Renault itself does not produce filter elements. Air filters are ordered from other manufacturers. In the original configuration, the Renault Logan is equipped with a filter element from Mahle. Obviously, the filter from this company is recommended by the French car manufacturer.

Surely a filter element from another company will do just as well. The main selection criterion is the ratio of price and quality.

Is an air filter really necessary?

To begin with, many drivers completely doubt the need to replace this filter, based on the fact that the air is already quite clean. To some extent, this is indeed true, but on average, over 100 kilometers a car “swallows” up to 15 cubic meters of air. This is a fairly large volume that contains dust, dirt and other small particles. Each part in the engine is precisely matched to the others, so there is no room for foreign particles. It is for this purpose that filter elements are installed on all liquids that enter the power unit. Air is no exception.

For regular off-road driving or in a city, the filter is simply irreplaceable. Sand poses the greatest danger. When it gets into the internal parts of the structure, it slowly but effectively wears away the metal, increasing the backlash of parts. Of course, this can lead to costly damage. Water is no less dangerous for the structure, which can cause corrosion. Don't forget about soot, dust, small peelings from the asphalt surface, tires and brake pads. It turns out that the air is not as clean as it seems at first glance. Timely replacement of the Renault Logan air filter is a mandatory procedure. According to research, if you change the air filter on time, you can extend the life of the engine by an average of 15-20%.

What to put on Renault Logan

As mentioned earlier, the choice of model directly depends on the generation of your car. Here are the following options:

  • 8V 1.4 and 1.6 liters – filter with catalog number 77 01 070 525. Made in the form of an oval.
  • V16 until 2012 – rectangular filter. Articles 7701045724, 8200431051.
  • Cars manufactured after June 2013 - rectangular filters with article number 16 54 694 66R.

Original products cost around 400-500 rubles. If this is too much, then you can look at analogues for 100-300 rubles. We recommend studying the following models:

  • GoodWill, AG371;
  • analogue: 8200431051 (USA);
  • Bosh, Mann, Wix, Mahle, 6001998848;
  • FiltronAR 131/1;
  • Fortech Logan, FA-030; Mann, C2672/1;
  • Asam 30664.

There are no fundamental differences between compatible models and the original. No matter how high-quality the filter is, after 15 thousand kilometers it will still become unusable. Given the regularity of replacement, drivers save on air filters by buying cheaper, but no less high-quality analogues.

Step-by-step replacement instructions

Before replacing the filter element in the air purification system, we will prepare the necessary tools. The design of the air filter housing and mounting is different for 16- and 8-valve engines, so different tools are used. In both cases, you will need a special TORX T25 wrench (asterisk), and for an 8v motor we will also prepare an open-end wrench for 8.

8 valve engine

The air filter housing is located under the hood above the engine. It is secured with 2 bolts and 2 screws. There are two metal latches on the sides.

  • Unscrew the two bolts at the bottom of the housing using a size 8 wrench.
  • Unscrew the two screws on top of the body.
  • Unclip the two latches on the sides.
  • We move the air filter housing to the side and take out the old filter element.
  • We wipe or blow out the body.
  • We install a new air filter.
  • We fasten the housing with latches and tighten 2 bolts and 2 self-tapping screws.

16 valve engine

The air filter housing is located behind the engine. The moisture collector housing is connected to it.

  • Remove the rubber seal on the moisture collector body.
  • We disconnect the suitable pipe from the moisture collector body.
  • Disconnect the moisture collector from the air filter housing.
  • Disconnect the vacuum pump tube from the intake manifold. It is secured with two latches.
  • Unscrew the two screws on the air filter housing using a TORX T25 wrench. The screws remain in the body.
  • Carefully lift out the filter element housing upwards. There are two plastic guides at the bottom.
  • We take out the old filter.
  • We clean the case from dust and dirt.
  • We install the new air filter into the housing and tighten it with two self-tapping screws.
  • We connect the vacuum pump tube and the moisture collector housing.
  • We secure the pipe to the body using a rubber seal.

Preparing to replace the filter

The history of Renault Logan goes back only two generations. The first (the so-called “phase 1”) was produced from 2006-2007 to 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2014, and in 2009-2010 a restyling version was released, called “phase 2”, the production of which continued until 2015 . The second generation first appeared in 2014 and is still being produced.

The filter replacement process is almost independent of the year of manufacture of the car, however, there are slight differences between the 8- and 16-valve versions. Both in 2008 and in 2016-2017, the engine power systems are similar, only the auxiliary parts, filtration quality and assembly have changed. The instructions with photos will tell you in detail about the procedure for changing a spare part, but novice “mechanics” should turn to videos, of which there are countless on the Internet. After selecting the filter, we proceed to replacement.

Logan with 8 valves requires effort when removing and installing the filter. The part is located a little further from the engine. On both sides of the box there are latches that need to be removed. Similar actions are carried out with screws on top of the body and bolts on the bottom. It is worth moving the round air intake pipes so that there are no obstacles during removal. Now you can remove the box, clean it from dust and dirt, and replace the filter. Installation proceeds in reverse order.

On cars with 16 valves, disassembly is somewhat more difficult. Before removing the box, you need to remove the rubber seal. In places where the previous part was secured, it is necessary to disconnect the pipes from the air intake and the device itself. A vacuum pump is connected to the filter, the tube of which is temporarily tilted to the side to remove the latches and the part itself. The filter housing is secured with self-tapping screws. It is necessary to carefully unscrew them without damaging the resonator. Then you can change the spare part and put everything back together.

How often should I replace it?

According to the car maintenance regulations, replacing the cabin filter of Renault Logan (and all other cars on this platform) is performed at every scheduled maintenance, that is, once a year or every 15 thousand kilometers. There may be several reasons for premature replacement:

  • In summer, a car often serves as a summer mode of transport, and on dusty roads the filter becomes clogged much faster: it can become noticeably clogged in 6-7 thousand.
  • In city traffic jams, microparticles of soot can worsen its permeability already after 8-9 thousand: the filter acquires a characteristic gray-black color in the depths of the curtain, and blowing with compressed air almost does not bring any results, the dust eats up too tightly.
  • In autumn, the inevitable ingress of leaves when parked outside under trees leads to their accumulation in front of the filter and the beginning of rotting - you can get rid of the smell only after changing the filter and cleaning its box.

Additional Tips

It is not recommended to reuse old parts. Substances that are difficult to rinse and vacuum accumulate in the filter mesh, so there is a high risk of contaminating the fuel system. In addition, you should pay attention to the gasket: if it is very leaky, you should think about buying a new one. No matter how many kilometers accumulated, it is better to replace parts in advance. Otherwise, you will have to re-lay the filter box.

Purchasing and replacing an air filter is a mandatory element of Renault Logan maintenance. The procedure itself is not complicated, but it is important to follow its order very clearly and listen to advice on purchasing and servicing spare parts. This will avoid unnecessary nerves and inconvenience.

Types of filters

It would be a good idea to find out what types of filters exist. Most passenger cars are equipped with classic paper filters with an accordion-shaped structure. More than 400 types of paper have been developed. In terms of filtration quality and ease of manufacture, they occupy a leading position, surpassing carbon and oil-inertial ones. The oil in the air filter did not provide the necessary cleaning effect, so they were abandoned.

Models made of synthetic microporous materials are also actively used. They are stronger and more durable, but are more expensive. By design, filters are divided into round (for engines with a carburetor), panel (used in modern cars) and cylindrical (mostly for diesel cars).

There are classifications based on the number of degrees of filtration:

  • 1st degree. The design includes only paper arranged in an accordion-shaped casing.
  • 2 degrees. Additionally, the design includes a pre-cleaner made of synthetic material. Such filters effectively retain large particles. Most often they are installed on SUVs and special equipment that operate in extreme conditions.
  • 3 degrees. It includes a special impeller, which, due to turbulence, causes particles to settle inside a special container in the filter itself. They are among the most effective.

Please note that each filter produced is subject to strict requirements. It should have an air flow resistance of around 0.6%, and also retain 99% of pollutants. New certified products must meet these requirements.

Design of the Renault K7M power unit

This motor is simple and unpretentious, because its design dates back to the eighties of the last century, so for its volume and power it is quite voracious and annoys its owners with excessive noise and vibrations. It differs from its 1.4 liter brother with the K7J index by a larger piston stroke and a correspondingly increased displacement.

The SOHC 8v type unit is an in-line 4-cylinder monolithic cast iron block with an aluminum head, which is replete with archaic design solutions such as driving valves with rocker arms and adjusting their clearances with bolts. The timing mechanism is belt driven, there is one camshaft, distributed injection, and of course we are not talking about any modern gadgets such as phase regulators or hydraulic compensators.

Signs that replacement is needed

Experienced drivers can judge the occurrence of most problems in a car by their behavior. This comes with experience, when you literally begin to feel the car. You can determine whether the air filter is worn out by the following symptoms:

  • Noticeable increase in fuel consumption. A clogged filter causes oxygen starvation. The fuel in the cylinder does not burn completely and very quickly, which causes increased consumption.
  • Power drop. A clogged filter creates additional air resistance. The motor makes extra effort to “suck” it, which affects the overall power.
  • Ignition problems when the engine refuses to start.
  • Increased CO2 content in exhaust gases due to incomplete combustion of fuel. Unfortunately, it is possible to register an increase in concentration only with the help of specialized equipment.

If you find problems with dynamics and increased consumption, be sure to take action. These are clear signs that the motor is not working correctly. If you don’t want to waste money on major repairs, find the cause and eliminate it. The easiest way to start is by checking the air filter.

Procedure for replacing the vehicle air filter

If the engine is eight-valve:

  • They carry out preparatory activities: lay out a set of auto tools, a new filter, and a Torx T25 wrench.
  • Open the hood of the car. Remove the housing cover with the air filter. To do this, you need to unscrew the fastening bolts and latches on them.

  • They simply take out the used cleaning element.
  • Using a damp cloth, carefully wipe the inside of the filter housing to remove accumulated dirt and oil deposits.
  • Place the new air filter in place and reassemble in the reverse order.

On this engine the filter housing is located behind the engine. A special collection for moisture is attached to it. Remove the rubber gasket from the moisture collector and disconnect the pipe through which air is supplied.

The air pump tube from the exhaust manifold is also removed. Using a Torx wrench, the screws on the box cover are released and the old filter is removed. The inside of the box is cleaned, a new element is put in its original place and everything is assembled in the reverse order.

The process of replacing the air filter does not take much time; it usually lasts within 5 minutes. No additional knowledge is required here, which means there is no need to put this matter off for a long time, because the operation of your car depends on it. There are detailed videos on many car websites, so roll up your sleeves and get going!

Let's get started

Replacing the air filter on Renault Logan is not difficult. The entire process can be completed in 5-10 minutes. The only tool you need is a screwdriver. Additionally, prepare rags if you need to wipe the filter seat. We will provide two instructions.

Replacing the oval air filter

Follow the steps of this instruction:

  • Open the hood. The large plastic container in the center is the air filter housing. Using a Phillips screwdriver, remove the 5 screws.
  • Next, unclip the 4 latches (2 on the sides and 2 on the top).
  • Lift the protective cover of the housing and remove the old filter.
  • Remove dust with a rag or damp cloth, and replace the new filter.
  • Reassemble in reverse order.
