Do-it-yourself dismantling and replacement of the stove fan on Renault Megane 2 (3)
A car heater helps maintain an optimal temperature in the cabin not only for passengers, but also for car components. If the operation of the device is accompanied by uncharacteristic sounds - noise, grinding, as well as uneven supply of warm air, we have to talk about a possible breakdown. All this does not give the car owner any pleasure. The situation gets worse if the motor makes no noise at all. In this case, you will need to dismantle the Renault Megane 2 (3) heater fan, which can be done without resorting to the services of a car service.
What is a stove fan
A car heater performs a rather simple but important function - heating the interior. In addition, the device prevents glass fogging. In accordance with accepted standards, at an outside temperature of -25 ˚С, the cabin temperature should be at least +16 ˚С. Such indicators are necessary for comfortable operation of the car. Structurally, the heater is not a complex unit.
Heat enters the cabin from the operating power unit. Heated antifreeze circulating through the engine cooling system also enters the heating system. There it enters the stove radiator, which performs the function of a regular apartment battery. The fan drives outside air through the radiator honeycombs, which is heated in this way. It then enters the cabin through air ducts. On most vehicles, the antifreeze that passes through the heater core is immediately returned to the engine, and this circulation ensures a constantly high radiator temperature.
The heater fan supplies and distributes hot air throughout the vehicle interior
As a result, a high constant temperature in the system is ensured and maintained. If there was no fan, there would be no supply of hot air to the cabin. Most car heaters work on this principle.
One of the main elements that ensures the supply and distribution of heat throughout the cabin is the heater fan, which is an electric motor with an impeller on its axis. It is designed for use in the car's heater system for hot air blower.
Where is the heater fan in the Renault Megane car?
On Megan 2 (3), to repair or replace the stove fan, you will need to dismantle the element. If you lack experience, finding a heater motor is not so easy. To get to the electric motor, you need to go under the dashboard to the pedal assembly. There is a flap to the right of the accelerator pedal: it needs to be opened. Behind it is the electric motor.
The stove fan is located under the front panel in its upper part.

Hi all! The heater fan stopped working. Lately it works for me almost constantly, and mostly at third speed. Either with air conditioner, or simply drives air from the street into the cabin. Yesterday, I was driving from point A to point B. In order to protect the Kamaz truck ahead from black exhaust, in preparation for overtaking on a busy section of the highway, I turned on the air circulation in the cabin. At the same time, it was somehow slow and did not turn on the first time. In general, I forgot to return everything back, and after a while I finally returned the air intake from the street. I have a Conder, not a climate control. And at that moment the fan squealed strangely and literally stopped working completely. Just in case, I switched the blowing modes to make sure that it really wasn’t blowing anywhere, by the way, it was also somehow difficult and everything didn’t turn on the first time. I’m not sure that this all has a common origin, but I decided to share my observations just in case, as they say.
So, what could be the cause of the breakdown in such cases: a blown fuse, a faulty resistor, a broken fan (brushes, stator, motor, terminal) and something else. In my case, not everything was clear, looking ahead.
First, I checked the fuse. Located in the cabin, upper right at 30A. He looks fine. But just in case, I changed it, and immediately checked two new ones: no reaction.
It was already evening, I decided to climb into the darkness to pedal in daylight and warm the next day. Now I just decided to look at the switch block. Anyone who has disassembled the panel or just climbed into it will understand me... In general, everything is done with high quality, but it is very tedious, although it can be removed. I opened the block, everything switched perfectly, all switches, cables and valves work with a bang. I wiped off the dust; by the way, there wasn’t much of it. I put everything back together. I didn’t take a photo, my phone was already dead. Yes, and there was no time for that.
This afternoon I decided to deal with the heater fan. At the same time, make a revision of it. Just in case, I immediately bought larger brushes on a thick copper braid from a gas-powered tool store.
I noticed that the terminal that goes to the fan was just hanging and there were wires going to it from deep on the side of the fan. I tried to connect them in the terminal - zero result, it just clicks in the depths when plugging the fuse into the socket, and the louder the higher the fan speed, the louder it gets.
Why the Renault Megana heater fan does not work 2 (3)
Despite the fact that foreign-made cars are equipped with modern equipment, breakdowns cannot be completely avoided. So, in some Renault 2 (3) cars, a fairly common problem is the failure of the heater fan. To understand what the problem is, it’s first worth considering how it can manifest itself.
Symptoms of breakdowns
The following signs indicate that the fan is malfunctioning:
- fan operation at low speed;
- gradual failure of speeds;
- there is a smell of electrical wiring in the car interior;
- the stove starts with difficulty (after mechanical impact on the lower part of the torpedo on the right near the gas pedal);
- complete stop of the electric motor.
In the latter case, heater repair is inevitable. However, in order to be sure that the problem lies precisely in the stove fan, you need to know a little more about diagnosing the unit in question.
Diagnostics of breakdowns
To determine the malfunction, you should follow a simple technique.
- If you can't hear the motor running when you turn the heater control, the first thing you should check is the fuse. This element is located in the fuse box on the left side near the torpedo and is designed for a current of 30 A. If the fuse link burns out, you need to find out the reason.
In the fuse block, element C with a rating of 30 A is responsible for the operation of the heating fan circuit.
If the fan does not operate at any speed, the cause may be a failure of the corresponding resistor
When connecting the heater electric motor directly to the battery and operating it at maximum speed, you can judge the serviceability of the unit
In addition to problems with the engine itself, there may be other problems with the interior heater that reduce the efficiency of the system. There may be several reasons for this, for example, a low level of antifreeze in the cooling system, damage to the dampers, which leads to disruption of the normal air flow.

Important points
When replacing a stove fan with a Renault Megane, you need to remember the nuances that, at first glance, seem insignificant, but are actually very important. Here they are:
- as stated above, repairs begin with removing the side trim. But it is not always possible to remove it without problems, even if the central latch has successfully opened. After all, the pad sits in its niche so tightly that you simply cannot catch on it. There is only one way out: use a knife with a thin blade. The knife is carefully inserted into the slot and the cover is raised. But here you need to be careful not to break the fragile latches along the edges of the lining;
- pulling out the axle on the brake rod is not an easy task: it fits very tightly, and, moreover, in some cases it also rusts, literally welding to the rod. If this is exactly what happened, WD40 liquid will help. You need to generously lubricate the rust with this composition and wait 15 minutes. Even the rustiest axle can be removed without problems;
The best option for removing rusted parts is WD40 liquid.
- When going to the store for a new furnace fan for your Renault Megane, remember: it cannot be cheap. Its price starts from 4,000 rubles if purchased from official dealers. If somewhere the price is lower, there is a high probability that it is a Chinese fake. For this reason, you should buy spare parts only in Renault branded stores.
Even a novice car enthusiast can replace a faulty fan on a Renault Megane of the second or third model. Certain difficulties arise only when removing the unscrewed electric motor. But if you remove it as shown in the instructions, the impeller and motor will remain intact.
Renault Megane stove fan repair
If there are problems with the heater fan, its operation is accompanied by strange sounds, then the part will need to be dismantled and then cleaned or replaced. Since on the Renault Megane 2 (3) the node is located very inconveniently, in order to get to it, you must follow the step-by-step instructions. Only in this case you will not have to dismantle unnecessary elements, and you will also be able to avoid unforeseen situations.
How to remove the Renault Megane heater fan 2 (3)
Since the heater motor is located in a dark place, you will need a flashlight to operate it. We carry out repairs in the following sequence:
- Carefully remove the cover. The effort should not be excessive to avoid breaking the lid. The main latch is located in the center of the surface; you just need to pull it back.
The heater fan is located at the top of the front panel inside the structure: to get to the unit, you need to open the protective cover
Replacing the heater motor for Renault Megane 2
Despite the rapidly developing technological progress in the automotive industry, ideal spare parts have not yet been invented and any element of one of the systems can break. The Renault Megane 2 model from the famous French manufacturer Renault is not immune from such an unpleasant situation.
The operating principle of the heating system in Renault Megane 2 is identical to that found in many models from other manufacturers. If the stove motor fails, you can replace it yourself. The opinion of many car enthusiasts about the labor intensity of this procedure will be incorrect, since they believe that in order to carry out such repairs as replacing the heater motor, the front panel in the cabin should be completely disassembled. In this article we will talk about how to replace the stove motor, plus you need to know how to remove the motor correctly.
In fact, the process is relatively simple and does not require any special skills from a car mechanic. Following the described manipulation algorithm, it will not be difficult to repair the heater motor on the “French” Renault Megane 2.
Step-by-step action manual
- So, how to remove the motor? First, remove the cover on the panel near the pedals. We act with extreme caution to avoid damaging it. There is a key lock in the center. We just pull it back.
- The second step is to move to the area where the pedals are located. To ensure better visibility, it is recommended to arm yourself with a flashlight (preferably one that is worn on the head). We find the brake light button and dismantle it. For these purposes, you need to turn the button in the reverse clockwise direction and remove the element itself.
- The next step is to remove the accelerator pedal connector. Here we lightly press on the flat side and then release the latch. If it is difficult to open it with your hands, you can use a screwdriver.
- Let's move on to the brake. We remove the lock washer, then the nut, and then disconnect the pedal from the rod, which we lower in the downward direction. We take out the axis itself to the right (along the way).
- We dismantle the pedal assembly by first unscrewing the 4 nuts securing it.
- We move our gaze further - deeper into the panel. The heater motor we need is located there. We disconnect another latch by squeezing its legs from the end sides.
- After approaching the heater, press the tongue on the latch at the top of the unit and turn it back clockwise.
- Next, remove the connectors with two thick cables. We disconnect the connectors using a principle similar to unlocking the trunk lid.
- The final stage. We remove the heater motor from its mounting niche. This is where the difficulty arises because the brake rod is in the way. Using your imagination, you can squeeze the part between the stove tubes and the rod itself (only in one specific position). We perform this action carefully to avoid damaging the unit.
- The dismantling process is complete. Installation of a new motor on a Renault Megane 2 is carried out in the exact reverse order of dismantling. This is an easy way to replace the heater motor.
What are the signs of a breakdown?
Identifying motor faults is not difficult. There are several signs indicating its failure.
- The fan rotation speeds fixed by the cabin regulator disappear. Not all of them may be included, but only some of them.
- The rotation speed of the fan impeller decreases.
- There are difficulties starting the stove (sometimes after a targeted hit on the right area of the panel).
- The fan did not start, and a wiring smell arose in the interior of the Renault Megane 2.
In all of the above cases, especially in the extreme of the indicated points, repairs should be started immediately. In this case, replacing the stove motor is inevitable.
In addition to purchasing the motor itself, the repair procedure will require a new control unit, since there are frequent cases of burnout of the connector terminals and resistor module. The price for this unit is quite high, especially if it is an original product. It would be useful to once again verify that the module has failed.
Diagnosis first
Before replacing the heater fan, the system must be diagnosed as a whole. It is necessary to exclude breakdowns of other components or errors in actions when servicing the climate section of the car. These include:
- Incorrect selection or errors in antifreeze mixing rules. This vehicle requires red coolant grade G12+/G12++. As a temporary solution, pouring 13th yellow antifreeze is allowed. But it is forbidden to pour blue and green varieties.
- Coolant leaks. Occur due to cracks in the supply pipes. If the problem is extremely rapid, the radiator unit is held fully accountable. Car enthusiasts tend not to repair the radiator, but to replace it completely due to its severity.
- Deposits due to waste fluid. Another serious problem. Each antifreeze has a certain service life. After finishing, its properties change. The antifreeze becomes cloudy and a kind of sediment appears. Subsequently, it is deposited on the radiator walls and pipes, impeding access to the coolant. Efficiency decreases. This scenario is also caused by low-quality liquid from the roadside.
- Failure of the sensors or the entire electronic control unit of the stove is possible.
- And the table is closed by the driver’s banal inattention. Often, car enthusiasts simply forget to update or add antifreeze fluid to an acceptable level.
If everything is fine with the driver, but the heater does not work, you need to check the motor. Diagnostics consists of several stages - disassembly, cleaning, condition assessment. Then there are two options: the damaged parts are changed together with the lubricant updated, then reassembled and installed. And in the second case, the motor becomes unusable and is replaced. Let's look at everything in order.

After this, you can remove the axle towards the right. Decrease in fan speed. Reassemble in reverse order.
Next we go even deeper. We shine the light towards the button with the brake light and remove it. Here you will have to try and show your imagination.
How to get a Megane 2 heater motor
We move our heads towards the pedals. Remove the brake light button by turning it counterclockwise and removing it. Remove the connector from the gas pedal by pressing on the flat side on the right along the way and remove it. You may have to pry it off with a screwdriver. Then the brake, pick out the lock washer, remove it from the rod and lower the lock down, remove the axle to the right along the way. Using a 13mm wrench, unscrew the 4 nuts securing the pedal assembly and remove it.
Next we go even deeper. In the depths at the top we see the required unit. We disconnect another connector, latches at the ends.
Proceed as indicated in the photo. Next you will have to tinker a little. We remove the connector with two thick wires by prying the latch from below in the direction from the center of the assembly. Open the connector like a trunk lid.
Then you need to unscrew the four nuts that hold the pedal assembly and remove it. Now let's look deeper.
There we see the stove motor we need. Now we disconnect another connector. After you have opened the heater, you need to press the tab on the latch on top and turn it counterclockwise.
Now you need to remove the connectors with two wires, the thicker ones. The connector opens according to the same principle as the trunk lid.
Well, the last stage. We take out the Renault Megane stove assembly.
Step-by-step instruction
This cannot be done until you understand the brake rod. Here you will have to try and show your imagination.
The Renault Megane motor fits best under the brake pedal rod. This must be done very carefully, trying not to damage the motor itself and the elements adjacent to it.
Assembling the motor is also easy. To do this, perform all steps in reverse order.
For this, there are a number of signals that indicate this: Not all of them may disappear at once, but only some. After which, over time, they too begin to act up until they stop working altogether.
Decrease in fan speed. The interior smells like wiring, and the engine won't start at all. This is an extreme case, after detection of which it is necessary to urgently carry out repairs.
