Where are the fuses and cigarette lighter relays for Ford Focus 2

In the abundance of elements, the Ford Focus 2 cigarette lighter fuse is quite difficult to find. The problem is exacerbated by ignorance of the car's electrical circuit. Due to the complexity of the design and the abundance of accessories, the machine is equipped with three fuse panels.
  1. Located in the engine compartment on the right side. The device is equipped with a protective cover and is identified by the presence of a large number of wires.
  2. The second insert is located under the glove box in the front passenger footwell. To gain access to the element, you will need to remove the protective casing.
  3. The third module is in the luggage compartment. The compartment is designed to install fuses and relays for rear wiring harness equipment.

Please note that the location of the fuses is the same on the hatchback, station wagon and sedan versions. The only option is that S-MAX has more inserts due to the improved configuration.

Cigarette lighter fuse Focus 2 restyling: where is it located

In 2008, the car was updated.
After restyling the appearance and equipment of the machine, the location of the mounting block has not changed. The numbers of the inserts and their placement in the on-board network have changed. On cars produced in 2012 and 2010, the cigarette lighter insert is located in the passenger compartment. It is difficult to understand the numbering of elements from the photo. For a better understanding of the essence, a diagram is given below.

Here the element is numbered 109.

How to turn off the cigarette lighter

A constantly running device can cause breakdown of on-board network components. To resolve this issue, it is recommended that you find ways to disable it. In order for the device to stop working after turning the key in the ignition switch, an additional relay is introduced into the circuit. This way the cigarette lighter will not be powered when the engine is off. You can completely disconnect the device to be switched off from the on-board network by removing the wires. However, it will not be possible to use it for its intended purpose even after starting the engine.

Fuse connection diagram

On the second generation, the cigarette lighter is connected directly to the battery.
The electrical circuit section is not related to the ECU, which allows you to connect various additional equipment and devices here. A special fuse is included in the device circuit. A 20A fuse link provides sufficient resistance to increased load.

An important point is that it is inadmissible to replace it with a more powerful one - this can cause the wiring to burn out and cause a fire.

Why does the cigarette lighter fail?

There are several reasons.

  1. Connecting too powerful equipment. Some car enthusiasts connect high-performance vacuum cleaners and refrigerators to the cigarette lighter socket. The fuse may not withstand the load and burn out.
  2. Water getting into the wiring. The device is sensitive to condensation and water ingress.
  3. Mechanical damage to wiring. Cracks in insulation and breaks in power lines.
  4. Burnt out filament of the cigarette lighter itself.

Where to look for the cigarette lighter fuse

Fuse kit. It's better to use these.

On all versions of the second generation Ford Focus, the cigarette lighter fuse is located in the interior mounting block, but its location and functions in cars produced before 2007 and after 2008 are different.

In the restyled Focus, this fuse is responsible not only for the cigarette lighter, but also for the rear 12-volt outlet. Therefore, if both the cigarette lighter and the rear socket do not work on a restyled Focus, the fuse is guaranteed to have blown. If only the cigarette lighter, the cause must be sought either in the circuit or in the cigarette lighter socket.

Restayl and dorestayl

In both versions of the second generation Focus, our fuse is located only in the interior mounting block, but is located and numbered according to the diagram differently :

  • in pre-restyling cars it was assigned the number 39, and its face value is 20A ;
  • the same 20-amp fuse in restyled cars is installed under number 109 in the same interior mounting block.

Here is a diagram of the location of fuses in Focuses produced before 2007:

And this diagram shows the location of the fuses in the mounting block of the restyled focuses:

If the fuse link is working properly and the device fails, the problem should be looked for in the factors.

  1. The mechanical part of the cigarette lighter is broken. The device has a metal locking button. If it is faulty, the mechanism will not work.
  2. The filament is damaged. If there are problems, you should check the working part of the device. If a broken circuit is detected, the part is replaced with a new one.
  3. The wiring is broken or the power terminals are loose. If gaps are detected, the contact group should be checked for oxidation and burns. Also ring the power lines.

Checking fuses

It's easy to check functionality. The device is pulled out of its seat and its integrity is visually assessed. The inserts are specially made transparent for ease of diagnosis.

Replacing the fuse

To perform the repair you will need:

  • place the machine on a level surface;
  • secure the car;
  • remove the positive terminal from the battery;
  • open the cover of the mounting block;
  • find the required element and change it using special tweezers.
  • The repair process can be seen in the video.

    How to correctly connect the cigarette lighter directly to the battery via a fuse

    An option involves performing an operation.

    1. Remove the dashboard. Usually the entire console and trunk lid are removed.
    2. Prepare 3 meters of cable with a cross-section of 4 squares and a piece of wire for connecting the ground. You will also need a remote fuse socket and a 20A fuse link.
    3. Through the technological hole, stretch the power core to the battery and solder it to the positive terminal.
    4. Stepping 30-40 cm away from the battery, make a break in the line and solder the fuse socket into it. For reliability, the contact should be placed under heat shrink.
    5. The negative core should be placed on the screw in any convenient place.
    6. In the passenger compartment, route the wires into the cigarette lighter mounting hole.
    7. The backlight lamp should be connected to the interior interior lighting circuit.
    8. After reassembling the console, connect the contacts to the wiring so that you can connect the cigarette lighter.
    9. Collect all contacts and install the cigarette lighter in its socket.

    Installation of an additional cigarette lighter

    In 90% of cases, users place the additional device in the luggage compartment. If the motorist wants to insert the cigarette lighter directly, he will need to perform the operation specified in the paragraph above.

    The second option is to connect via a mounting block. There are several free sockets here from which you can power the device.

    Next, purchase the required part, wires and fuse. The wiring is pulled under the facing panels, and a bracket is placed in the trunk.

    The modification is inserted into the drilled mount and secured.

    Replacing the cigarette lighter fuse for Ford Focus 2 — Ford Focus Sedan, 2.0 l., 2008 on DRIVE2

    Hi all!

    One day I was relaxing outside the city and noticed that one of the tires was starting to flatten a little. A friend I was vacationing with had a compressor in his car from the cigarette lighter. I used the compressor, pumped up the tire, turned off the compressor and gave it away. When I decided to use the cigarette lighter next time, it no longer worked for me.

    It is logical to assume that the culprit for a non-functioning cigarette lighter is the fuse, at least it is better to start repairing this malfunction with it, if it is not the fault, then look at the cigarette lighter itself and the electrical circuit. To replace any fuse, we will need the fuses themselves, plastic “nippers” "in order to get the fuse (or pliers, I got them out with them, since there were no wire cutters)

    The mounting block itself is located under the glove box at the feet of the front passenger. In order to get to it you need to remove the casing, this is done by hand without using tools, there are plastic clips that are simply pulled together and that’s it.

    Next, the two plastic clips are unscrewed by hand and the mounting block of the cabin fuses itself is lowered down. As far as I understand, they are different for Restayl and Pre-Restayl. I have Pre-Restayl, but the year of manufacture of the car is 2008.

    So I ended up with such a block

    Blown fuse

    We install the new fuse in place and check everything. Reassembling in reverse order

    Why did I tell you about the compressor at the very beginning? So, as I understand it, he was the culprit for the blown fuse. Apparently, when I turned off the compressor, it generated a current surge and melted the fuse. The replacement work is elementary, I wrote more for myself, since the article contains a diagram of the location of fuses and relays.
