We disassemble the cigarette lighter in Getz: how to remove, repair
The device is found in every modern car. Now even non-smoking drivers use it. And not only for its intended purpose - for lighting cigarettes, but as a connector for a 12-volt outlet. Electrical devices are connected to the device’s socket: from a mobile phone charger to a compressor, inflating tires or a vacuum cleaner.
Therefore, failure of the cigarette lighter has a negative impact on driver comfort. Below is information on how to remove the device on Hyundai Getz and Accent models, repair it or replace it.
The device and how the cigarette lighter works
The device consists of several main parts - a connection socket where several wires come and a metal rod that is inserted into the connector. The Hyundai Getz cigarette lighter comes with three cables.
- Constant positive (red cable). Connected to the battery via a standard fuse. Responsible for heating the metal coil located inside the cigarette lighter.
- Positive backlight cable. The device is equipped with a filter ring that illuminates the hole. A positive wire of yellow or white color is suitable for it.
- Minus. Powered to the device body. The second end fits into the car body, this is the mass. Has black insulation.
A special nichrome wire is mounted inside the cigarette lighter itself. After pressing the button, the contacts close, and current begins to flow through the device, causing the wire to heat up. After 15-20 seconds, the maximum temperature is reached, and then the Hyundai Getz thermostat gives the command to turn off the heating and snap the cigarette lighter to its original position.
Causes and troubleshooting
In order to remove the cigarette lighter on a Hyundai Accent or Getz model, you will have to dismantle the front console. Before repairing, you should find out the cause of the malfunction; perhaps everything can be solved in a simpler way.
- Blown cigarette lighter fuse. Due to the connection of powerful devices, the current strength of this section of the circuit may exceed the permissible value of 15 amperes. To protect the wiring from melting, the fuse fails. You need to get to the Hyundai Getz mounting block and replace the element with a working one.
- Short circuit. If the elements burn frequently or the cigarette lighter fuse is intact, then there is a high risk of a short circuit. In this case, you will need a tester or voltmeter. It is necessary to check the battery voltage with the ignition off and then on. If there is a drop of more than 0.5 volts, then you need to look for a short circuit. All cables should be tested for resistance.
- Broken cigarette lighter wiring. Age can cause cable soldering to come loose. The wiring should be inspected for kinks, abrasions, or unnatural bends. When localizing the break point, solder the cable or replace it with a new cord of suitable cross-section. The recommended wire diameter is at least 1.5 square meters. mm.
- Poor contact. Due to frequent use or connecting foreign devices, the cigarette lighter socket on the Hyundai Getz may become loose, as a result, not providing reliable fixation. In this case, it is recommended to bend the fixing tendrils using a flat screwdriver.
- The appearance of oxides or rust. Refers to “age-related” problems. It is necessary to periodically remove the Hyundai Getz cigarette lighter and inspect the contact points for the appearance of oxides or rust. If present, remove them with a file to ensure optimal conductivity.
- Spiral deformation. After repeated heating, the metal thread may burn out. Here it is recommended to remove the cigarette lighter of a Hyundai Accent or Getz car and replace it with a working device.
- Failure of the backlight lamp. There is a special light filter around the socket that makes it easier to find the connector in the dark. The light bulb may burn out over time. This requires dismantling the filter and replacing the part.
Removal and replacement process
To replace fuses and relays on a Hyundai Getz, you will need the following tools:
- plastic tweezers,
- 10 mm socket head,
- 10 mm wrench,
- crosshead screwdriver.
Before carrying out work, you must remove the key from the ignition switch.
Under the hood
The procedure is as follows:
- Open the hood.
- Open the unit cover by pressing the plastic latch on the windshield side.
- Pull out the blown fuse with tweezers and the faulty relay with your hand. If you need to replace fuse link No. 18 (protects the generator), then unscrew the fixing bolt with a key and a 10mm socket.
- Check the vehicle's electrical wiring and eliminate the cause of the blown fuse.
- Install new protective elements.
- Install the removed parts in reverse order.
In the cabin
The procedure is as follows:
- Remove the mounting block cover by grasping the notch in it with your fingers.
- To replace fuses: Use tweezers.
- Find and remove the burnt out element.
- Install new one.
- Remove the lower instrument panel trim by removing 2 screws from the lower left and right corners of the panel.
Fuse box Hyundai Getz, Elantra, Sonata
On the roads of Russia and the post-Soviet countries, encountering a Hyundai car is, frankly speaking, not uncommon, which is not surprising in principle, because Hyundai Motors is the largest automaker in Korea and the fourth largest in terms of this indicator in the world market.
The company's engineers set themselves a single task: to make a car that will appeal to, if not everyone, then many car enthusiasts from all over the world.
It is impossible to achieve this without multi-functional electrical equipment of the models, as a result of which there are a huge number of electrical devices in any Hyundai.
A breakdown of one or another electrical circuit unit can occur for any car owner, even despite the high quality of Korean units. Often the culprit is a faulty fuse box. That is why our resource decided to cover in more detail the topic of repairing this unit in Hyundai cars using the example of generally recognized models - Getz, Elantra and Sonata.
Description of fuses
Remove the unit cover. Disconnect the wiring harness block from the mounting block. Unscrew the two bolts securing the mounting block to the body panels, press out the clamps of the protective casing of the wiring harnesses and disconnect it from the mounting block. Remove the relay from the mounting block.
Using a screwdriver, press out the wire holder clamps and remove the holder. Using a similar method, remove the remaining wire holders in the mounting block. Use a screwdriver to press the wire terminal retainer and remove the wire from the mounting block body.
