What to do if the VAZ-2115 cigarette lighter does not work

Absolutely any car gadgets today are powered by the energy produced by the cigarette lighter - a video recorder, a GPS navigator, a car compressor, and even a mobile phone. All this requires energy, which can be obtained using a cigarette lighter. Therefore, when this part in a car fails, all the gadgets with which it is equipped automatically stop working.

VAZ 2114 cigarette lighter fuse: location, breakdowns and their elimination

Sometimes motorists are faced with the fact that the cigarette lighter on a VAZ 2114 does not work. This seemingly minor problem can lead to very big difficulties on the road.
Indeed, nowadays a car cigarette lighter not only serves its intended purpose, but is also used to connect various chargers (for example, for smartphones) and to power some electronic devices directly (for example, navigators). That is why it is so important to understand the electronic circuit of the cigarette lighter and be able to repair it in a timely manner. We'll talk about how to do this today.

A cigarette lighter is found in every car, but it is not always used for its intended purpose. Over time, this device may function unstably or fail altogether, resulting in the car owner needing to replace it. For what reasons does the VAZ 2109 cigarette lighter not work, and how to replace it yourself? You will find the answers below.

Causes of malfunction and their elimination

Speaking about why the VAZ 2114 cigarette lighter may fail, it is worth noting the following, most likely reasons:

  • fuse is blown;
  • the fuse contacts or block sockets have oxidized;
  • the contact in the mounting block is broken;
  • the light bulb burned out;
  • a short circuit has occurred inside the device.

As you might guess, the search for a possible breakdown should start from the first point, namely the fuse. In order to do this, you should carefully inspect the common unit and find the required fuse. It is designated F4 and is designed for a current of 20 A.

After the fuse has been found, it should be carefully removed and checked using a tester (a regular “test” is sufficient). If during the check it turns out that the fuse is working, then it should be replaced and the search should continue. Otherwise, the fuse will have to be replaced with a new, similar one.

You should not replace the fuse with another one, but designed for a lower current strength, because in this case it will burn out much more often, even just when connecting powerful consumers.

If the VAZ 2114 cigarette lighter fuse turns out to be working, then you should check the condition of its contacts, as well as the contacts of the socket into which it is inserted. If oxides are noticeable on them, they should be cleaned.

To do this, the contacts will need to be wiped with a cloth with kerosene or VD-40 or cleaned with very fine sandpaper. After completing this procedure, the fuse should be put back in place and the functionality of the cigarette lighter should be checked. If it turns out that it still does not work, the search should be continued.

The next thing you have to check are the contacts at the outlet of the mounting block (in the same place where the VAZ 2114 cigarette lighter fuse is located). These contacts are marked X1. If their fastening is loose, they should be carefully tightened. Such a seemingly trifle is very often the cause of a cigarette lighter malfunction.

After all the previous points have been checked, and the device still does not work, it is worth checking to see if the light bulb has burned out.

For this you will need:

  1. Remove the terminals from the battery.
  2. Unscrew the fastening elements of the cigarette lighter housing (it is held in place by two screws screwed into the central panel).
  3. Remove the plastic housing.
  4. Remove the light bulb.
  5. If it is faulty, replace it with a new, similar one.
  6. Reinstall the housing.
  7. Connect the terminals to the battery.

If after this simple procedure it turns out that the light bulb has nothing to do with it, all that remains is to check the cigarette lighter itself. Sometimes its petals close on each other, resulting in a malfunction. You can check this by using a multimeter and testing the device.

If it turns out that there is a short circuit, then the cigarette lighter will most likely have to be replaced (since it is extremely difficult to repair it, especially if the central spring is broken. It will be cheaper and easier to purchase a new one).

In order to extend the life of the cigarette lighter, you need to handle it carefully. The plugs inserted into it should be removed smoothly and without exerting lateral loads - they are the ones that lead to a short circuit inside the device itself.

Replacing the cigarette lighter

If both fuses are good, most likely the cigarette lighter itself will have to be replaced.
You can do this either independently or by contacting service centers. But our people are not used to paying money for something that they can easily do with their own hands. Therefore, there are many manuals on the Internet that tell you how to independently replace the cigarette lighter on a VAZ-2115. All you need to replace the device yourself is, of course, a new cigarette lighter and a screwdriver. Then they proceed according to the following scheme:

  1. The “–” terminal wire on the battery is disconnected.
  2. On the left trim of the center console of the instrument panel, you need to unscrew all the screws.
  3. Remove the trim.
  4. The wiring harness connector must be disconnected from the cigarette lighter.
  5. Pull out the lamp illuminating the ashtray, together with the wiring harness block and socket.
  6. Push the cigarette lighter out, despite the resistance provided by the latches.
  7. Remove the fuse from the center console.
  8. Remove the fuse holder and the backlight from the housing.
  9. Remove the cigarette lighter lamp from the socket.
  10. Remove the cigarette lighter lamp socket guide.
  11. Take a new cigarette lighter and install it in reverse order.

How to protect the cigarette lighter from damage

In order to protect both the cigarette lighter itself and its electrical circuit from malfunctions, a number of rules should be followed. We have already talked about some of them (for example, careful handling).

It is also worth mentioning the following:

  • You can only install a similar fuse to replace the burnt one (it was said at the very beginning which fuse is responsible for the cigarette lighter on the VAZ 2114);
  • It is absolutely not advisable to install wires in the electrical circuit of the cigarette lighter (as well as in any other system of the car) using twisting alone, since most often it is this that leads to short circuits and fires. It’s better to take the time and tin all the twists (or use special terminals);
  • the condition of the contacts in the mounting block should be checked periodically, and not only after any malfunction occurs;
  • If you have to replace the cigarette lighter with a new one, you should take a multimeter with you to the store. With its help, you need to check the newly purchased device and make a purchase only when the new cigarette lighter is guaranteed to be in working order.

These simple tips will help you avoid mistakes and extend the life of this device.

Cigarette lighter repair

In general, the situation was this: the cigarette lighter did not click off on its own, I heated it by holding it with my finger. Clicking sound, the radio and cigarette lighter stopped working. There is no food. I thought the problem could be easily solved, a fuse, but that was not the case. Everything is intact, absolutely everything.

Then I thought maybe the previous owner had installed an additional fuse somewhere under the panel, but no, after searching for half an hour, you know in what position I didn’t find anything. After reading the forums I realized that the reason could be something else, and so it turned out.

The track in the mounting block has burned out. Having removed and disassembled the fuse box, we see a burnt track (photo No. 1). I solved this problem easily by simply soldering wires instead of a track (photo No. 2). After that everything worked as before.

Malfunctions of the Samara cigarette lighter of the fourteenth model: search and elimination

A car cigarette lighter (AC) is a device whose failure will not affect the operation of the vehicle as a whole. However, failure of this element can affect the comfort of driving the machine. What to do if the cigarette lighter in a VAZ 2114 car does not work correctly or does not work at all, what to do in such cases? Read more about this below.

Design and purpose of the cigarette lighter

Some car models simply do not have a cigarette lighter. Drivers of these cars light cigarettes from ordinary lighters, and to connect electronic gadgets in such cars a 12-volt socket is used. But in domestically produced machines, AP is an integral structural element.

New AP for VAZ 2114

If we talk directly about the device, then the AP is a power outlet; a separate circuit with a safety element is allocated for it. The VAZ 2114 cigarette lighter itself consists of a special nichrome spiral. This element heats up when voltage is applied to it, so much so that touching it can cause a burn.

A thermal relay is located in the design socket. The purpose of this component is to turn off the coil when its temperature reaches its maximum. The thermal relay opens the contacts of the device, after which the ejection mechanism comes into operation.

Car socket for electrical appliances

If we pull the insert out of the socket, we get a real 12 V car socket. Naturally, in order to be able to receive electricity from it, we will need a special cylindrical plug. All automotive electrical appliances listed above are equipped with these plugs. Typically they have one central positive contact and two side (negative) contacts. Most plugs, in order to further protect electrical appliances from overloads, are equipped with fuses that are located inside them.

Typical faults

Where to look for the reason if the VAZ 2114 cigarette lighter does not work? It is necessary to take into account that the failure of the AP, as well as the sockets directly for connecting it, are two different things. Moreover, the AP is not used as often as a socket, since this socket is often used to connect various electronic devices. The device may stop working when using low-quality chargers for equipment made in China. Especially when it comes to using an AP splitter, this can, in principle, cause its breakdown (the author of the video is the Expert R channel).

The AP circuit is designed to power various gadgets, but its maximum load capacity is 20 Amps. The corresponding 20 A fuse element is located in the block and is marked with the symbols F4. If you use a splitter, the load on the circuit will be simply catastrophic and over time the fuse will fail, but this is not so bad. It is much worse if the wiring fails, since this can cause not only a short circuit, but also a fire.

It often happens that if the cigarette lighter stops working, the radio does not work. In this case, the problem most likely lies in the circuit or functionality of the safety element. The radio can be connected directly to the battery or to the AC cable, so you shouldn’t be surprised at its inoperability if the latter breaks down.

Repair and replacement instructions

First of all, before removing and replacing the unit, you need to figure out what happened to it. Either the heating coil itself has failed, or the problem is a lack of voltage. If the reason lies in the spiral, then there is only one option - to remove and change the device assembly, since you will not be able to find a new spiral in stores. But if you just need a spiral, you can always turn to car disassembly.

If the problem is a lack of voltage, then there can be many reasons for such a problem:

  1. The fuse element has burned out, if this is the case, then you are in luck. It will take you no more than one minute to replace the fuse, the main thing is that you always have a spare part. And keep in mind that the fuse must be rated at 20 amperes; if you use another one, it will also quickly fail. Before replacing the fuse element, it is necessary to find out the reason for its burnout.
  2. Electrical circuit break. If you notice that all the equipment of the machine is functioning normally, and only the AP is not working, then most likely the problem lies in a broken wiring. To diagnose, you need to use a tester or a test light; you will need to find the break point. We recommend that you contact an electrician with this problem, since the wiring in the “fours” is not laid out in the best way - if you do not have experience in finding breaks, then this task can take several hours.
  3. The problem may also be a malfunction of the socket itself, which does not happen so often, but it will be visible to the naked eye.
  4. Failure of the light bulb - if this is the case, then the AP will need to be removed from the installation site and the light bulb replaced.

Recommendations for care and maintenance

  • Buy original fuses. Domestic or foreign, it doesn’t matter;
  • Install strictly in accordance with amperage ratings. Unacceptable with lower or higher current strength. In the first case, this will lead to damage to the module, in the second - to breakdown of the unit, which is attached to the fuse;
  • Carefully check the quality of fixation of terminals and limit switches on the board. If loose, tighten and press with pliers. A spark can cause a fire and melting occurs;
  • If moisture gets in or condensation forms inside the mounting block, remove the cover, dry it, and if necessary, blow it with a stream of compressed air.

Carry out preventive and diagnostic work in the fuse box with the battery terminals removed in order to prevent a short circuit in the circuit.

The average service life of fuses is 40 – 60 thousand km. The service life of foreign analogues is 10–15% longer. Before replacing, read the instructions and get advice from service station specialists.

The main reason for the failure of the cigarette lighter is that the plugs of additional devices, especially imported ones, through which they receive power, although slightly, still differ in diameter and the length of the protrusion of the central contact, to which the positive must be supplied from the current source.

If the central contact of the plug is slightly short, then when it is installed in the cigarette lighter socket, the antennae attached to the positive contact of the cigarette lighter socket move apart. This can lead to these antennae touching the body of the cigarette lighter socket, to which the wire going to the ground of the car is connected. As a result, a short circuit occurs and the fuse protecting this electrical circuit blows.

The driver, after turning on the headlights, sees that the lighting of the cigarette lighter socket is working and believes that after his previous actions, nothing happened to the electrical circuit of the cigarette lighter and tries to reconnect an additional device to this socket, but it refuses to work. The driver's first thought is that this device is out of order. But he is misled by the lighting of the cigarette lighter socket, which is powered through another fuse F10 (7.5 A), so this lamp is on, although the cigarette lighter fuse has already blown.

To replace a blown fuse, you will have to open the cover of the mounting block, which has symbols that help the driver quickly find the fuse he needs. But the problem is that there is no cigarette lighter symbol on it and the driver will have to look for a diagram of the location of the fuses in the mounting block, from which it will become clear that this electrical circuit is protected by fuse F7 (30A). If, when checking this fuse, it turns out that it is safe and sound, then the driver will need to look at another fuse F4 (20A), which will probably be blown. This is what will have to be replaced. But why F4 burned out and not F7, you need to ask automotive electricians.

Why the cigarette lighter and radio do not work on the VAZ-2114

VAZ cars, including the 2114 model, are distinguished by ease of maintenance and reliability. However, even these sometimes break down. For example, the following may occur: the radio tape recorder fails and at the same time the cigarette lighter stops working. These two troubles confuse many, but in fact, the simultaneous failure of the mentioned nodes is a very characteristic sign that greatly facilitates the search for the cause. How to find out why the cigarette lighter along with the radio stopped working, and what to do in this situation - we will tell you further.

Additional mounting compartment

As already mentioned, the Samar fifteenth model has an additional mounting block located in the car interior under the instrument panel on the passenger side (under the glove compartment). There are only three relays and three fuses located here. You may ask why they couldn’t be placed in the main block? For several reasons. The fact is that these devices are responsible for the operation of the main engine systems, namely:

  • upper relay and fuse – fuel pump power supply circuit;
  • medium - circuits of the cooling fan and canister purge valve, as well as speed sensors, crankshaft position and mass air flow;
  • lower – electronic control unit and central relay.

Car cigarette lighter - features

A few decades ago, the unit in question performed only its main and then only function - it allowed you to light a cigarette. Much has changed since those times, and now its socket is used more often as a universal socket that allows power from the on-board network:

  • smartphones;
  • navigators;
  • tablet computers;
  • video recorders;
  • vacuum cleaners;
  • compressors, etc.

Thus, the functionality of the cigarette lighter (or rather, its socket) has increased significantly. The problems of the element in question arise from the low reliability of the connection and the transmission of excessively high power current. The cigarette lighter socket is not very suitable for powering household appliances and is not able to provide proper contact.

How to remove the cigarette lighter

Sometimes the cause of the breakdown is not the fuse. In this case, repairs are performed. To remove the cigarette lighter, perform the following steps:

  1. Turn off the engine and open the engine compartment. Disconnect the negative terminal from the battery. This prevents burnout of on-board network elements during repair work.
  2. Remove the protective pad located to the right of the driver’s foot. To do this, unscrew the screws.
  3. Disconnect the cigarette lighter plug. Remove the lighting fixture with the socket.
  4. The metal clips are pulled out. This will make it easier to remove the device.
  5. Remove the metal cylinder.

Why does the radio fail?

On the VAZ-2114, the mentioned reproducing device is connected to the same circuit as the cigarette lighter. Thus, if its common elements are damaged, then both devices will not work.

This, by the way, is not all - in addition to the cigarette lighter and radio itself, other quite important devices are connected to the same circuit:

  • cabin stove;
  • heated rear window;
  • backlight

For this reason, having identified a failure of the first two devices, we advise you to immediately check whether the others are working.

In most cases, failure of the VAZ-2114 cigarette lighter (and along with it the radio) occurs due to a blown fuse. After all, since they have one electrical circuit, it is protected by a common device. The problem is that its fuse link is not always able to withstand the load arising from the parallel operation of several consumers - accordingly, it simply burns out. Short circuits occurring in any of the loops can lead to a similar result. These are not all the reasons causing problems.

So, in particular, circuit failure is sometimes caused by:

  • oxidation of contact groups in connecting terminals or safety block;
  • break of one or more common wires;
  • burnout of the backlight lamp.

To find the root cause of the problem, you must check all the above options and fix the problem found.

In general, the work is not very complicated, and the knowledge gained in physics lessons in high school is enough to complete it. If you are not confident in your abilities, we recommend asking for help from a more experienced car enthusiast or going to a service station. In this case, you are guaranteed to avoid mistakes, which often lead to more serious problems and, consequently, unnecessary costs.

Next, we will consider each reason and how to eliminate it in more detail.

What is a fuse

An automobile fuse (fuse link) is a protective element of the electrical circuit of a certain component(s) from overloads. Protection is achieved by breaking the chain. Typically, the insert consists of a plastic body and a thread (conductor) made of low-melting metal located inside it, as well as contacts. When an overload occurs, the conductor melts and breaks the electrical circuit. The unit for which the fuse is responsible for its safety stops working.

Fuse

As noted above, the first thing you should look at if the cigarette lighter or the same radio fails is the fuse. This device is designed to protect not only devices connected to the on-board power supply, but also the electrical network itself.

The required element is located in a block located in the car interior to the left of the steering wheel, and is designated as F4. Its standard rating is 20 amperes, but even this safety margin is not always enough if the car owner regularly overloads the system with too voracious consumers.

The fuse should be held up to the light. If there are no signs of burn-through, then it must be checked with a tester (installed on ohms).

When a break in the fuse link is detected, the element is replaced with a functional one, and in the absence of one, it is permissible to install a temporary external jumper. Its cross-section is 0.51 square. To make a “bug”, 5-6 veins taken from any power wire are suitable.

After replacing the fuse, you need to check whether the cigarette lighter and stereo system work. If they still show no signs of life, then you will have to look further.

Contacts

Any detachable connection by default is a weak point in the electrical circuit.
Therefore, immediately after the fuses, you should check the condition of the contacts, because their malfunction can also be the reason why the devices discussed in the article do not work in your VAZ. In domestic cars, the terminals of the fuse socket or connecting blocks often fail. If they are poorly connected or contaminated, the contact resistance increases and, accordingly, the metal elements heat up. This effect provokes the melting of the plastic, which, in turn, flows between the contacts and creates an insulating layer.

To find such a malfunction, it is enough to inspect the pads, starting with the safety ones and ending with those that go to the devices. It is very difficult not to notice traces of burning. Similarly, oxidation and simply poor contact contacts worsen conductivity. In the first case, the metal elements of the terminals must be cleaned with a regular school rubber band, and in the second case, the clamps must be adjusted.

Basic fuse faults

Fuses in cars play an essential role, protecting electrical appliances from power surges and short circuits. They take on the impact of such factors and maintain the working condition of the electrical appliance, while burning out themselves. But if this happens regularly, you need to check the fuse box and determine the cause of the breakdown.

Bad contacts

One of the most common reasons for a situation where a fuse does not work is related to the contact group. With frequent voltage surges in most VAZ cars, contacts burn out and plastic melts, which can interrupt the contact of parts. A similar condition is also observed when the contacts have oxidized and become coated.

Broken wiring

When operating a car, malfunctions such as broken wires often occur. To determine for yourself where the accident occurred, you will need a special device (multimeter, tester) with which to check the working condition of the contacts. To find an open circuit, the device is set to ohmmeter mode, and the leads are connected to the circuit being tested. In the place where the wiring is broken, there is high resistance.

Are you a car driver?! Then you can take this simple test and find out. Go to test »

Short circuit

A short circuit occurs when the contacts in the block are strongly oxidized and crossed due to frequent use of the cigarette lighter socket. This condition is indicated by a fuse blowing shortly after replacing it. To determine the short circuit zone, you need:

  1. Inspect the entire area for damage.
  2. Disconnect the section being tested from the main wiring.
  3. Use a multimeter to set the dialing mode.

Wires

Broken wiring is a very common problem in domestic cars. Often it is impossible to determine by eye where exactly the malfunction has occurred, and therefore a multimeter should be used.

Testing starts from the fuse if the radio or cigarette lighter fails at the same time, and from one of the devices when it is the only one that does not work.

Once a faulty core is discovered, it must be replaced immediately - we do not recommend twisting it or wrapping it with electrical tape. As noted above, any connection becomes a weak point in the chain.

How to use a cigarette lighter so that it works for a long time

If you use your cigarette lighter correctly, you will maintain its usability for a long time.

First of all, you should not connect to it powerful consumers such as a compressor, which many now use to inflate wheels or blow air into the power unit. It is more correct to power this device through a rechargeable battery.

In this way, you will protect the wiring and fuses from overloads, and, therefore, they will not overheat, burn out or melt. Some craftsmen install a separate socket in the car for such devices - this is very forward-thinking and effective.

Also try not to stick adapters into the VAZ socket if it turns out that they are too thick - this will quickly break the core, which is made of ceramic.

Replacing fuses on a VAZ 2115

Preparatory stage:

  • Driver, head at “10”;
  • Flat head screwdriver;
  • A set of new modules;
  • Plastic pliers for removing the relay block;
  • Rags, additional lighting as needed.

Sequencing:

  • We turn off the engine, open the hood, remove the terminals from the battery;
  • On the left side, closer to the windshield, there is a mounting block. Unscrew the two bolts around the perimeter;
  • We disconnect two blocks with wires, remove the power supply assembly;
  • We carry out troubleshooting and check the serviceability of all modules.

You can do this in two ways:

  • Visually: checking each module for the integrity of the melting element;
  • Using a multimeter: measuring the resistance at the end switches of the module without dismantling it.

Each method is applicable and effective.

After replacing the faulty fuses, we assemble the structure in the reverse order.

Some motorists practice the second method: without dismantling the mounting block. We remove the fuses one by one, check them for integrity, and replace them with new ones as necessary.

If you notice that a unit in your car has suddenly stopped working, do not rush to dismantle it and replace it with a new one. First of all, inspect the mounting block, check the modules for integrity. Most likely some kind of fuse has blown.

Only after replacing the module does not help eliminate the problem, proceed to diagnosing the equipment and checking the integrity of the electrical supply circuit.
