How to get rid of the smell of gasoline in the cabin of a VAZ 2107

If there is an unpleasant smell in the cabin, no one will like it. If it also starts to smell like gasoline, then there is a real threat to the well-being of all passengers. After all, these fumes lead to harmful consequences in the functioning of some body systems. Therefore, it is necessary to determine the cause of the malfunction as quickly as possible and eliminate it.

The main reason for the occurrence of vapors is a violation of the tightness. When gasoline gets into the air or starts leaking somewhere, there is a potential explosion hazard. Make sure there are no sources of fire nearby and no one is smoking.

Let's look at the main reasons for the smell of gasoline in the cabin of a VAZ 2107 (injector or carburetor).

All information below applies to other models of domestic vehicles. This is especially true for the VAZ 2106, VAZ 2110, and VAZ 2114.

Depressurization of fuel sensor joints

Loose joints in the fuel supply system are the most common cause of unpleasant odors in the cabin.

You need to get to the junction of the fuel elements and tighten all the threaded connections of the fuel line.

For greater reliability, you can use laundry soap. It needs to be soaked and all cracks and joints in the fuel system lubricated. The substances that make up soap have the properties of an excellent sealant. They also prevent the smell of gasoline from spreading.

Spark plug

Gasoline vapor sometimes escapes where the spark plug is not tightened well enough. Additionally, this leads to excessive consumption of gasoline, leads to a decrease in the dynamic properties of the engine, and deterioration of compression. In winter, starting such an engine is quite difficult.

Therefore, you need to check the tightening torque on each spark plug using a torque wrench. The main thing is not to overdo it. The threads can be lubricated to make it easier to remove the device over time.

Gasoline vapors are very harmful to humans. Therefore, even a slight unpleasant odor in the cabin should cause an immediate reaction. Stop the engine, open the doors and let in fresh air. Passengers must be asked to leave. You will have to spend time finding and fixing the problem. But you will protect yourself and your loved ones and prevent other potential breakdowns.

A crack has appeared between the neck and the tank

The neck is securely welded to the tank. But under the influence of corrosion or as it ages, the weld may begin to delaminate, which leads to a crack. Naturally, gasoline begins to evaporate from the crack. The effect is especially noticeable immediately after refueling and continues as long as the tank is more than half full.

To get rid of the problem, you will either have to install a new gas tank or temporarily seal the gap with laundry soap. Sometimes after this procedure, drivers ride for several more years. Although the best solution is to solve the problem in other ways.

You can check not only the cooking area, but also the rubber tube that connects the neck to the body of the tank. The tightness of the rubber tube that connects these elements may also be compromised.

Smell of gasoline when starting the engine

If the cabin smells of gasoline when you start the engine, this is an alarm bell.

Let us note right away that there are many reasons why the smell of gasoline appears in the cabin when starting the engine. Among them there are both absolutely harmless (for example, supplying a rich mixture during a cold start) and alarming ones, for example, associated with a leaky fuel line. Only professional diagnostics will help determine the exact cause.

If you notice a smell in the cabin when starting a cold engine, then do not rush to worry. The fact is that when starting “cold,” the computer artificially enriches the mixture to make starting easier. Perhaps this is the only reason. However, it would be a good idea to inspect all hoses and connections of the fuel line for leaks. Start by checking the area under the car. Due to sudden temperature changes, pipes and hoses may crack. A fuel leak is accompanied by a characteristic “puddle”.

The presence of gasoline stains under the car indicates a leak.

Fuel pump manhole cover problem

Most often, this situation is typical for injection versions. They have a cover to which the high-pressure fuel pump leads, as well as a gasoline level sensor inside the system. Under the cover there is a gasket for sealing. Over time, it loses its properties and begins to leak gasoline fumes into the VAZ’s interior.

To fix the problem, you just need to install the gasket correctly or replace it with a new one if damaged. Additionally, an oil-resistant sealant can be used. The rubber must be wear-resistant, otherwise it will swell easily.

What to do after fixing the problem

Once the reason has been found that caused the unpleasant gasoline aroma to spread throughout the interior of the car, it is imperative to clean this very interior. That is, to get rid of the remaining odor that is probably present there, since gasoline vapors are very volatile and easily eat into a variety of materials (and especially fabric ones), making themselves felt for a long time. And sometimes getting rid of this smell is not easy.

Car owners use a variety of means and methods for this - fragrances, dishwashing detergents, vinegar, baking soda, ground coffee and some other so-called folk remedies. However, it is best to use chemical interior cleaning or ozone cleaning for this purpose. Both of these procedures are performed in specialized centers using appropriate equipment and chemicals. Performing the mentioned cleanings is guaranteed to get rid of the unpleasant smell of gasoline in the interior of your car.

Conclusion

Remember that gasoline vapors are very harmful to the human body . Therefore, if you detect the slightest smell of gasoline in the cabin, and even more so if it appears on a regular basis, immediately carry out a set of measures to find and eliminate the causes of this phenomenon. Also, do not forget that gasoline vapors are flammable and explosive. Therefore, when performing the relevant work, be sure to follow fire safety rules . It’s better to work outside or in a well-ventilated area so that gasoline vapors do not enter your body.

The first trouble I encountered with this car was the smell of gasoline in the cabin! I’ll immediately notice that the car is Euro 2. It was especially noticeable when opening the rear window. This fact gave us an understanding of where to look for the problem. Classic Lada cars are designed in such a way that when the windows are opened, especially the rear ones, the air flow comes from the trunk into the cabin! So the reason is in the trunk. First, I checked all the hoses for leaks, went through the vapor recovery system, installing it as it should (and not as it should have been at the factory). And I extended the gas exhaust pipe and brought it into the rear bumper mount. The reason turned out to be painfully simple: the fuel check valve, it did not open when necessary and the accumulated vapors did not go into the Absorber. I didn’t find it in the picture of the vase, but it is there. And there were no markings on it and this was from the factory.

But I found it in pictures from other vase models.

We have it standing behind the passenger seat in the gap.

After replacing it, there was no longer any smell of gasoline in the cabin.

Fuel pump

On sevens, most often the appearance of an unpleasant odor indicates a malfunction of the fuel pump. And there may be three problems here:

  • the gasket is worn out;
  • the membrane has failed (holes or cracks have appeared on it);
  • due to inept installation, the fuel line fittings were skewed or they were not tightened sufficiently.

It’s easy to find a repair kit for a fuel pump in the store, and even an inexperienced driver can replace a non-working element.

Burning smell when starting the engine

If you smell a burning smell when starting the engine in cold weather, then first of all you need to determine the nature of the smell:

  • sharp and caustic,
  • sweetish,
  • bitter, etc.

The sharp and acrid smell of burnt rubber indicates that pipes or seals are heating up somewhere in the engine compartment. A sweetish aroma indicates a leak of antifreeze onto a hot surface. The bitter smell is the smell of burnt motor oil. First of all, check the engine for leaks of technical fluids, and also make sure that no parts rub against hot elements - the exhaust system, exhaust manifold, etc.

Check all pipes for leaks, pay special attention to the tightness of the clamps

Strong smell of gasoline when starting the engine

So, if when you start the engine you smell an unpleasant exhaust smell, the smell of gasoline or other odors, then there may be several reasons for this, which are listed in the table below.

CauseDescription
Supply of rich mixture during cold startIf the smell goes away after some time, then most likely there is nothing wrong - the ECU simply supplies an enriched mixture for an easier cold start.
Injector malfunctionAccompanied by interruptions in fuel supply, engine tripping, and unstable starting.
Leaking fuel lineIncreased fuel consumption, the presence of gasoline leaks, wet spots under the car - all this indicates a leak. The smell of gasoline lingers almost constantly.
Sensor malfunctionIf the sensors give incorrect readings, the computer constantly supplies an enriched mixture. At the same time, the car loses power, the spark plugs quickly become covered with soot, and black or gray smoke is observed from the exhaust pipe.

Fuel filter

Carburetor sevens are equipped with a fuel filter, which is located in the engine compartment in front of the carburetor. On injection versions you need to look for a filter under the bottom.

Over time, it becomes clogged, which leads to an unpleasant odor in the cabin, especially when the heater is on. Improper installation of the device can also cause a leak.

A clogged filter puts a lot of stress on the fuel pump, which can lead to its failure. Therefore, it is recommended to change the mechanism every 30 thousand kilometers.

Carburetor adjustment is out of order

If your car has a carburetor, the problem may occur due to incorrect settings. Excessive consumption of gasoline leads to the fact that the remaining fuel begins to burst out, evaporate and enter the cabin.

If the driver forgot to remove the choke, an identical situation arises.

Adjusting the carburetor on a VAZ 2107

If the driver has an old carburetor “seven”, then to eliminate the smell of gasoline you will have to adjust the idle speed on the carburetor. To do this you will need a flathead screwdriver.

Adjustment sequence

  1. The engine starts at idle speed. After this, the quality screw on the carburetor is turned clockwise with a screwdriver until the crankshaft reaches maximum speed.
  2. After setting the maximum speed (they are determined by ear), use the same screwdriver to turn the screw responsible for the amount of mixture. It is necessary to achieve a situation in which the number of revolutions will be no more than 900 per minute (determined using a tachometer).

When adjusting idle speed, always adjust the quantity screw first, and then the quality screw

  3. The final stage is the rotation of the screw, which is responsible for the quality of the mixture. This screw rotates clockwise until the number of revolutions reaches 780–800 per minute. If you managed to achieve this indicator, then the carburetor adjustment can be considered successful.

Checking the valve with a multimeter

Diagnostics can also be done with a voltmeter. How to check the fuel canister check valve? You need to open the hood and disconnect the wiring harness connector from the valve. Next, connect the negative probe of the multimeter to ground and turn on the ignition. Then bring the positive probe to the wire chip and look at the values of the device. The readings should not be lower than 12 V.

To inspect the valve itself, loosen the hose clamp with a screwdriver and remove the tube outward. Next you need to remove the valve itself by prying it off with a slotted screwdriver. It is necessary to turn on the ignition and apply “plus” and “minus” to the corresponding terminals on the element. If the valve is working properly, you will hear a characteristic click. Otherwise, the element is defective and must be replaced. The cost of a new element is 350 - 370 rubles (suitable for a VAZ of the tenth family).

To replace the valve, you only need a slotted screwdriver. She needs to unscrew the clamps of the gasoline hoses and pry off the edges of the element. The new one must be installed tightly into the grooves until it clicks. Next, put the hoses on the valve and tighten the clamps. At this point, the replacement of the Semyorka adsorber valve has been successfully completed.
