We change the oil in the automatic transmission, transfer case and gearbox of the VW Touareg ourselves

The automatic gearbox saves the driver from unnecessary movements of changing gears during the trip. In order to extend the working life of his assistant, the car owner is obliged to promptly change the oil in the Volkswagen Touareg automatic transmission.

Let's look at what technical fluids need to be poured into the box and tell you about the timing of this maintenance. In our review we will also describe the procedure for replacing the lubricant.

Features of changing oil in automatic transmission VW Touareg

There are many opinions regarding the need to change the oil in the Volkswagen Touareg gearbox. Should I open the automatic transmission and change the oil? For a caring car owner, the answer to this question is obvious - definitely yes. Any, even the highest quality materials and mechanisms, even with the most careful use, do not last forever, and it never hurts to make sure that everything is in order with them after a certain number of thousands of kilometers.

It is recommended to change the oil in the VW Touareg automatic transmission after 150 thousand km.

When to change the oil in a VW Touareg gearbox

Among the features of the Volksagen Touareg is the absence of requirements in the technical documentation regarding the timing of oil changes in the gearbox. Official dealers, as a rule, state that an oil change in the Tuareg automatic transmission is not required at all, since it is not provided for by the manufacturer’s operating instructions. However, practice shows that such a procedure would be useful even for preventive purposes after a run of 150 thousand km or more. If any problems arise with the gearbox, experts recommend starting to search for the causes and eliminate the problems that arise by changing the oil. Problems in this case manifest themselves in the form of jerks when shifting gears. It should be said that changing the oil in this case can be considered a slight scare: replacing the valve body will be much more time-consuming and expensive. In addition, the need to change the oil in an automatic transmission may be caused, for example, by a breakdown of the oil cooler or another emergency situation when the oil leaks out.

What kind of oil to pour into the VW Touareg automatic transmission

The type of oil that is used in the automatic transmission of the Volkswagen Touareg is also not indicated in the technical documentation, so you should know that the brand of oil depends on the modification of the gearbox.

The original oil for a 6-speed automatic transmission is “ATF” G 055 025 A2 with a capacity of 1 liter; it can only be purchased from official dealers or upon order via the Internet. The cost of one canister ranges from 1200 to 1500 rubles. Analogues of this oil are:

  • Mobil JWS 3309;
  • Petro-Canada DuraDriye MV;
  • Febi ATF 27001;
  • SWAG ATF 81 92 9934.

Such oils can cost 600–700 rubles per canister, and, of course, cannot be considered an equivalent replacement for ATF, since it is the “native” oil that is designed for high power and torque of the Tuareg engine. Any analog will lose its qualities much faster and require a new replacement or lead to interruptions in the operation of the gearbox.

For the 8-speed automatic transmission made in Japan "Aisin", the manufacturer of these units produces Aisin ATF AFW+ oil and CVTF CFEx variator fluid. There is an analogue of Aisin ATF - German-made Ravenol T-WS oil. A fairly serious argument in favor of choosing one or another type of oil in this case is the cost: if Ravenol T-WS can be bought for 500–600 rubles per liter, then one liter of original oil can cost from 3 to 3.5 thousand rubles. A complete change may require 10–12 liters of oil.

Mileage 80,000, all maintenance at the dealer, except for changing the automatic transmission oil. So I took up this topic. And I learned a lot when I decided to change the oil. In general, the prices for replacement are different, AND THE RATE FOR REPLACEMENT IS DIFFERENT - from 5000 to 2500, and the most important thing is that for 5 thousand it is a partial replacement and 2500 is a complete one. Well, the most important thing is to decide on a replacement, there were no shocks in the box, it worked as it should, except for S-mode: in it it was jerky. Well, I started by looking for oil, original oil - 1300 per liter, on (zap.net) - for 980 you can find it. Well, I decided to look for an alternative and, by the way, found a good Liqui-Moly 1200 ATF. With approvals for a given year and automatic transmission. Liquid Moth has this program for selecting oil on their website, I really liked it. Before that I bought CASTROL, I had to take it back to the store and pass it according to the approvals. I bought an original filter - 2700 rubles, and a gasket - 3600 rubles, original. And the search began for a decent car service center that offers COMPLETE oil changes in the SOUTH OF MOSCOW REGIONS AND Moscow. And, lo and behold, I found it 300 meters from the house. If from Moscow - 20 km from the Moscow Ring Road. I made an appointment at 9 am, arrived, was greeted good-naturedly, announced a price of 3,000 rubles, and 3 hours of work. I asked again for a complete replacement, they answered that they have a special device that is connected to the automatic transmission and the oil is squeezed out using pressure. I leave the car and go home. By the way, the master is a very good-natured and elderly man who examined every bolt like an artifact. I come and see this picture. Damn, guys for this kind of work should be given tea WITH BLACK CAVIAR. Which was done in my face. THE MASTER IS JUST SUPERB. I forgot about the most important thing: the automatic transmission is unrecognizable - no shocks, no discomfort. Everything became like NEW.

How to change the oil in a Volksagen Touareg automatic transmission

It is most convenient to change the oil in the Aisin automatic transmission used in the Volksagen Touareg transmission on a lift so that there is free access to the automatic transmission pan. If the garage is equipped with a pit, this option is also suitable; if there is no pit, you will need a couple of good jacks. In summer, work can also be carried out on an open overpass. In any case, it is possible to perform a quality replacement if nothing interferes with the visual inspection, dismantling and installation of the equipment.

Before you start replacing, you need to buy the required oil, a new filter and a pan gasket . Some experts recommend replacing the thermostat, which is mostly in an aggressive environment and is exposed to high temperatures.

Before you start replacing, you need to buy the required oil, a new filter and a gasket for the pan

In addition, to perform this type of work you will need:

  • a set of keys;
  • stationery knife;
  • screwdrivers;
  • container for collecting used oil;
  • hose and funnel for filling new oil;
  • any cleaner.

The first thing you will need is a cleaner: before starting work, you must remove all dirt from the pallet. In addition, the pan is blown around the perimeter with air to prevent even small particles of debris from getting inside the box during the oil change process.

Before starting work, it is necessary to remove all dirt from the VW Touareg automatic transmission pan

After this, using a 17mm hex wrench, the level plug is released and the drain plug is unscrewed using a T40 sprocket. The used oil is drained into a pre-prepared container. Then you should remove the so-called protection in the form of two transverse brackets, and you can begin to unscrew the fastening bolts around the perimeter of the pallet. To do this, you will need a 10 mm spanner and a ratchet in order to get to the two front bolts, located in a hard-to-reach place. All bolts are removed except two, loosened as much as possible, but not completely unscrewed. These two bolts are left in place to hold the pan when tilted to drain any remaining fluid. When removing the pallet, it may require some force to tear it away from the box body: this can be done using a screwdriver or a pry bar. It is extremely important not to damage the joint surfaces of the body and pallet.

I'm reporting. Today I changed the oil in the gearbox, transfer case and differentials. Mileage 122,000 km. I changed it for the first time, in principle nothing bothered me, but I decided to play it safe. I changed the oil in the box by removing the pan, drained it, removed the pan, replaced the filter, put the pan in place and filled in new oil. Approximately 6.5 liters fit. I used original oil in the box and transfer case. By the way, the Tuareg has a box gasket and a box filter from the manufacturer Meile, at a price 2 times cheaper than the original. I did not find any external differences.

The design of the pan is made in such a way that the drain hole and the level plug are located in a certain recess, so after draining the oil, a certain amount of liquid will still remain in the pan, and in order not to pour it on yourself, you need to remove the pan carefully.

  1. When the oil has stopped draining, the drain plug is put in place, the two remaining bolts are unscrewed, and the pan is removed. A sign that the oil has become unusable may be a burning smell, black color and heterogeneous consistency of the drained liquid.
  2. The removed pan is usually covered with an oily coating on the inside, which should be washed. The presence of chips on the magnets may indicate wear of one of the mechanisms. The magnets should also be thoroughly washed and reinstalled.

    The VW Touareg automatic transmission pan should be washed and a new gasket installed on it.

  3. Next, a new gasket with bushings is mounted on the pallet, which prevent excessive pinching of the gasket when installing the pallet in place. If the seat and body of the pallet are free of defects, sealant will not be required when installing the pallet.
  4. The next step is to remove the filter, which is secured with three 10mm bolts. You should be prepared for the fact that after removing the filter some more oil will spill out. The filter will also be covered with an oily coating; there may be small particles on the mesh, indicating wear of the mechanisms.
  5. After the filter has been thoroughly washed, a new O-ring should be installed on it. When installing the filter in place, do not overtighten the mounting bolts so as not to damage the filter housing.
  6. After installing the filter, you should visually verify that the wires located behind it are not pinched or damaged.

The VW Touareg automatic transmission filter should be washed and replaced

Before installing the pallet, use a utility knife to thoroughly clean the mounting surface from dirt, being careful not to damage the box body. Before installation, the bolts should be washed and lubricated; the bolts should be tightened diagonally, moving from the center to the edges of the pallet. Then the protection brackets are returned to their place, the drain hole is screwed in and you can proceed to filling the oil.

Checking the oil level

Oil can be poured into the box under pressure using a special tank VAG-1924, or using improvised means such as a hose and funnel . The design of the Aisin automatic transmission does not provide a dipstick, so the oil is poured through a level glass. One end of the hose is tightly inserted into the hole in the level; a funnel is put on the other end into which oil is poured. If a complete replacement is performed with a new thermostat installed, up to 9 liters of oil may be required. Having filled the system with the required amount of liquid, you should start the car without disassembling the structure and let it run for several minutes. Then you should remove the hose from the level hole and wait until the oil temperature reaches 35 degrees. If oil drips from the level hole, then there is enough oil in the box.

I didn’t take any risks and took the original oil into the box and transfer case. For a partial replacement, the box included 6.5 liters. I took 7 liters at a price of 18 euros per liter. Of the suitable non-original ones, I found only Mobile 3309, but this oil is sold only in containers of 20 liters and 208 liters - this is a lot, I don’t need that much. The dispenser only requires 1 can (850 ml) of the original oil; it costs 19 euros. I think that there is no point in bothering and looking for something else, since no one can clearly say what is filled there. For differentials, Etka offers original oil or API GL5 oil, so I took Liqui Moly gear oil, which meets API GL5. The front one needs 1 liter, the rear one needs 1.6 liters. By the way, the oil in the gearbox and diffs looked quite normal at 122,000 km, but in the transfer case it was really black. I advise you to change the automatic transmission fluid again after driving 500–1000 km.

After this, tighten the level plug and check that there are no leaks under the pan gasket. At this point, the oil change can be considered completed.

If it is necessary to install a new thermostat at the same time as changing the oil, then before proceeding with dismantling the pan, you should remove the old thermostat. It is located in the front right along the direction of the car. Thus, most of the oil will pour out through the drain hole of the pan, and the remaining oil will drain out of the oil cooler. To completely free the radiator from old oil, you can use a car pump, however, there is a risk of staining everything around with oil. To remove the thermostat, it may be necessary to remove the front bumper. When replacing the thermostat, be sure to change the rubber seals on all pipes.

What's next?

Then you should start the engine and test all positions of the automatic transmission selector, while keeping your foot on the brake pedal. This way we will circulate new oil through the system. It would also be a good idea to check the oil level. In an automatic transmission, you need to do the check with the engine running. By taking out the dipstick, we will determine whether fluid needs to be added. Ideally, the oil should be in the middle, between o and “maximum”.

If the level is in order, you can put back the protective mudguard and begin full operation of the car.

Changing the oil in the VW Touareg transfer case

VAG G052515A2 oil is intended for filling into the transfer case of a Volkswagen Touareg; as an alternative, you can use Castrol Transmax Z. Replacement requires 0.85 liters of lubricant . The cost of original oil can range from 1100 to 1700 rubles. 1 liter of Castrol Transmax Z costs about 750 rubles.

The drain and filler plugs of the transfer case are removed using a 6mm hexagon. There is no sealant for the plugs - sealant is used. The old sealant is removed from the threads and a layer of new is applied. When the plugs are prepared, the drain is installed in place, and the required volume of oil is poured through the upper hole. When tightening the plugs, do not use excessive force.

Keep an eye on the level

No matter how long ago the replacement was made, it is necessary to periodically monitor the fluid level in the box. Due to its insufficient volume, various malfunctions may occur, as well as overheating of the automatic transmission. The clutches do not press well against the metal discs and slip. As a result, their temperature increases. The friction clutches become charred and destroyed. This also affects the oil itself. It acquires a black color and a characteristic burning smell.

What other problems are encountered when operating a Volkswagen-Tuareg automatic transmission with a low oil level:

  • The thrust discs, rubber-coated pistons and clutch drum overheat.
  • The hydraulic unit is wearing out.
  • The hydraulic plate channels and plungers become clogged with mechanical particles caused by overheating. This entails increased wear of the rubbing elements of the pump and bushings.

Timely replacement of this fluid will avoid these breakdowns and extend the life of the automatic transmission.

Changing the oil in the VW Touareg gearbox

The original oil for the front axle gearbox is VAG G052145S2 75-w90 API GL-5, for the rear axle gearbox if a differential lock is provided - VAG G052196A2 75-w85 LS, without locking - VAG G052145S2. The required volume of lubricant for the front gearbox is 1.6 l, for the rear gearbox - 1.25 l . Instead of original types of oils, it is allowed to use Castrol SAF-XO 75w90 or Motul Gear 300. The recommended interval between oil changes is 50 thousand km. The cost of 1 liter of original gear oil: 1700–2200 rubles, Castrol SAF-XO 75w90 - 770–950 rubles per 1 liter, Motul Gear 300 - 1150–1350 rubles per 1 liter.

When changing the oil in the rear axle gearbox, you will need a 8mm hex to remove the drain and filler plugs. After the oil has flowed out, a new O-ring is put on the cleaned drain plug and the plug is installed in place. New oil is poured through the top hole, after which its plug is returned to its place with a new sealing ring.
