How to change the oil in a manual transmission on a Ford Fusion yourself correctly?

Quite often, drivers prefer to repair their car themselves rather than at a service center. Some do it in order to save money, others enjoy the process itself and learning new things. Moreover, if some repair work requires skills and special technical training, then even a beginner can cope with changing ATF oil. We’ll look at how to change the manual transmission fluid on a Ford Fusion yourself in more detail in the material below.

How to change the oil in a Ford Fusion gearbox

Changing the oil is a very important process that prevents many breakdowns and malfunctions of the gearbox.

The level and amount of lubricant in the gearbox depends on the temperature component of the engine. Therefore, changing the oil in a Ford Fusion gearbox should only be done with a warm engine; by the way, checking the level will also be more accurate if the engine is preheated. The gearbox oil should be changed every 70,000 km on average. If you live in difficult environmental conditions or mountainous areas, then this procedure must be performed more often. Remember and do not forget to change the transmission fluid as required if you want to extend the life of the gearbox longer. There are three criteria under which it must be completed before the specified deadline:

  1. The oil has reached the "min" level.
  2. It turned black or dark brown.
  3. If the lubricant begins to smell unpleasant (not like before).

What kind of oil and in what quantity is needed?

A synthetic transmission fluid is suitable for a Ford Fusion. You will need a 2 liter canister. Nowadays the choice of oil on the market is very wide, so try to choose a quality product that is affordable. Also try not to change the brand of transmission fluid just like that. For this brand of car, Castrol TAF-X 4/5, Hochleistungs-Getriebeoil (GL-5) or Liqui Moly 75W-90 are suitable. You can check the amount of contents, top up or replace completely, at the service center or on your own. This procedure is simple and does not take much time.

Tools

  • Socket wrench 19;
  • Container for draining;
  • Syringe;
  • New lubricant;
  • Key (hexagon) 8.

Oil drain hole

Instructions

  1. Remove the engine crankcase protection.
  2. There is a cover on the gear shift device that needs to be removed.
  3. Place a drain container under the oil drain hole and unscrew the plug.
  4. Wait until all the liquid comes out (this will take about 15 minutes).
  5. Find a magnet on the plug and clean it of metal particles.
  6. Open the plug.
  7. Fill with new transmission fluid.
  8. If it starts to leak out of the top, blot it with a cloth and tighten the cap.
  9. It would be good to check the level in the gearbox again and put everything back in order.

If you are only going to add a certain amount, then you need to adhere to all points except point No. 4, you do not need to drain the old liquid. You need to check the level and add new oil.

Add new oil

Done, the gearbox oil change has been successfully completed.

Tips for car enthusiasts

  • To prevent many breakdowns, you just need to pay attention to the smell, color and viscosity of the old lubricant.
  • The friction linings wore out very quickly - the color was too dark.
  • Water got into the compartment, due to driving short distances it turned milky.
  • The gearbox overheats, and the amount of lubricant is too high - a sticky consistency.
  • The oil filter is clogged - presence of metal particles.

Tools and materials

If you have already had to add transmission fluid to the gearbox of your Ford Fusion, then the replacement procedure will seem like a simple and quick process.

To work, you will need to prepare some tools and materials:

Remember that you should never mix different brands of oils, even if their characteristics are identical. Therefore, when topping up, use only the lubricant that was poured into it.

When replacing, a small residue of old oil is allowed, since the main part can be drained. Residues on the walls will not cause much harm to the gearbox.

Ford Fusion Fiesta manual

The design of the gearbox does not provide for oil changes during the entire service life of the vehicle. However, sometimes the need to change the oil may arise (for example, when switching to oil of a different viscosity, when repairing a gearbox, etc.). HELPFUL ADVICE. It is recommended to drain the oil within 15 minutes after the trip, until it has cooled down and has good fluidity. You will need: a 19mm socket wrench, an 8mm hex wrench, a syringe, a wide container for draining the oil. NOTES. Fill the transmission with the oil recommended by the manufacturer according to Ford specifications. In its absence, Castrol or Mobil gear oils of API GL-4-5 SAE 80W-90 quality class can be used as a substitute. If the vehicle is operated for a long time at ambient temperatures below –30 °C, we recommend replacing the oil filled at the factory with SAE 75W transmission oil. 1. Remove the engine crankcase protection, if equipped.

2. Remove the gear shift housing cover (see Replacing transmission control cables).

3. Unscrew the oil drain plug, first placing a container under the hole, and drain the oil into it. Wait for the oil to drain completely (at least 15 minutes) and tighten the plug.

NOTE. A magnet is installed on the oil drain plug (shown in the photo with an arrow). Inspect it and clean it of adhering metal particles and dirt. The presence of a large number of metal particles on the magnet indirectly indicates some kind of gearbox malfunction. In this case, check and, if necessary, repair the box.

4. Remove the oil filler plug...

5. ...and fill the gearbox with oil up to the lower edge of the oil filler hole (oil will begin to flow out of the hole). 6. Remove oil stains with a rag and tighten the oil filler plug. 7. Install the gear shift housing cover and engine splash guard.

Oil selection

The Ford plant recommends using branded original oil for its vehicles. Therefore, the optimal solution would be BO 400075 with an SAE rating of 80W.

Ford Fusion uses synthetic transmission oils. An alternative choice could be:

There are no strict restrictions in terms of gear oil manufacturers. But try to use only high-quality and effective formulations. When changing oil, it is recommended to use a new, similar one. If you want to switch to a different lubricant, then you should thoroughly clean the transmission housing.

Here it makes sense to seek help from a good service station. Using a hardware method, they will clean the crankcase, which will allow you to fill in a new brand of oil without fear.

If you are lucky or make an effort, you can theoretically find original factory oil. At the assembly stage of Ford Fusion cars, Ford's proprietary compound with a viscosity of 75W90 (its specification is WSD-M2C200-C) is poured into the oil pan of their manual transmissions.

The total filling volume of a manual transmission is 2.3 liters. But it is unlikely that you will be able to drain the oil completely. To do this, you will have to contact a car service equipped with specialized equipment. In garage conditions, it is possible to remove approximately 1.8 - 2 liters from the crankcase. Therefore, feel free to buy a 2.0 liter canister. This amount of gear lubricant will be sufficient.

Replacement frequency, what oil to fill

According to the manufacturer's regulations, service changes of engine oil for Ford Fusion are carried out after 15,000 kilometers or at intervals of 1 year. But some car owners consider this interval to be a little too high, recommending that it be shortened taking into account operating conditions.

According to the passport and the operating instructions, the tolerances that the engine oil must have are given. The manufacturer's recommendation indicates the use of the original product, in this case Ford Formula F 5W-30.

The manufacturer allows the use of analogues, the only thing is that they must be approved by Ford WSS-M2C-913-A (-B or -C). Among car owners, the following names are most popular:

When to change the oil

Transmission oil, according to official data, is designed for the entire service life of the vehicle. On the other hand, the replacement interval depends on various factors and may be shortened under unfavorable climatic conditions. Fortunately, the state of oil quality, as well as the need to change it, can be determined not only by the number of miles driven, but also by three very important criteria:

  • Oil is at Min level
  • The liquid has turned black or dark brown
  • The oil emits a specific smell - completely different and less pleasant than it was before

What kind of oil to fill

Here we will pay attention only to the highest quality oils designed specifically for Ford Focus manual transmissions. So, let’s highlight the following products and their parameters:

  • Castrol TAF-X 4/5
  • Hochieistungs-Getriebeoil GL-5
  • Liqui Moly 75W-90

What will you need for replacement?

  • Set of tools, including 19 mm socket wrench and 8 mm hexagon
  • Container for draining old liquid
  • Special filling syringe
  • New gear oil
  • Towel, rubber gloves

Sequence of work

  1. Warm up the engine, place the car on the overpass, turn off the engine
  2. Remove the crankcase protection, behind which is the gearbox drain plug.
  3. You will also need to remove the cover located on the manual transmission device
  4. Unscrew the drain plug and wait until the old fluid completely drains into the pre-prepared pan. This process usually takes 15 minutes
  5. Clean the plug and hole from metal shavings and dirt deposits
  6. Open the filler plug and pour in new transmission oil.
  7. When new fluid begins to flow out, the oil fill must be stopped immediately, then the plug must be screwed back in.
  8. Check the level of the filled liquid. At this point, the process of changing the oil in the Ford Fusion manual transmission has been successfully completed.

Adviсe

  • You can simply add new oil, but in this case you will not have to drain the old fluid. This procedure is relevant for low mileage
  • If rapid wear of the friction linings is noticed, this is one of the reasons for the oil being too dark in color.
  • The condition of the oil can be determined organoleptically and visually - by smell and color
  • Oil turns milky if water gets into it.
  • Sticky oil consistency is one of the consequences of gearbox overheating
  • A clogged oil filter indicates a large amount of metal shavings

Changing the oil in an automatic transmission Ford Fusion (Fusion) + Video

Ford Fusion automatic transmission oil change

What oil is best for this machine?

All types of oil deteriorate with use and lose their beneficial qualities. As the oil wears out, a huge amount of harmful particles and additives enter the oil. In winter, the consistency of the liquid becomes thicker. As a result, the automatic transmission can not only break down, but also become completely unusable, when any repair turns out to be useless. To avoid these unpleasant and very expensive consequences, it is necessary to periodically change the Ford Fusion automatic transmission oil . To directly replace this fluid, the same type of oil should be used, identical to the original one.

Ford Fusion automatic transmission oil change - main steps

When designing the Ford Fusion gearbox, the manufacturer did not take into account the possibility of independently replacing the transmission fluid, because in most European countries, the factory fill, as a rule, is enough for the entire service life. But due to the specifics of domestic roads and operating conditions, the need for such a procedure arises regularly.

It is better to drain the old fluid in a warm car, for example, 20 minutes after the trip. After all, during this period the oil will not have time to cool completely and will easily pour out.

To replace, a car enthusiast will need:

  • hexagon (size - 8),
  • syringe, container (into which we will pour the old liquid),
  • socket wrench (size - 19).
  1. Remove the engine crankcase protection (if present).
  2. Remove the automatic transmission casing cover.
  3. Open the hole through which the oil will drain (unscrew the corresponding plug). Before this, we substitute a container into which the old lubricant will be poured, and begin the procedure. It will take about 15 minutes to drain completely. Close the drain hole with a plug.
  4. Pour new fluid into the automatic transmission through the appropriate neck. We make sure that the level rises to the special edge; When the lubricant begins to pour out, we complete the procedure.
  5. We wipe off any drips that appear using a rag, and use it to wrap the plug in the oil drain hole.
  6. We install all the parts in place and use the results obtained.
