Changing the oil in the axle
What and how much oil to fill in the axle and transfer case of Duster 4x4
According to the manufacturer, the oil in the transfer case and axle cannot be replaced and is refilled for the entire service life of the vehicle.
But underfilling the transfer case and axle with oil is a fairly common occurrence on Renault Duster. In this case, it was only 2 cm short of the level, it’s not a big deal, but I had to change it to calm things down.
Since it is not clear what kind of oil was poured in, I had to play it safe and buy a new transmission oil, Total Syn Fe 75W-90, an oil recommended by Renault, which hardens at temperatures below 50 degrees.
To change the oil in the transfer case and axle of a Renault Duster, 1 liter is enough. In this report, it took 1 liter and 50-100 grams, this is when filling to the maximum, to the level of the drain holes and taking into account the complete draining and washing of the rear gearbox and transfer case.
- We start with the rear gearbox
- You don’t have to lift the car; if you lie on the ground, there is enough space.
- Use a hexagon to unscrew the drain plug (bottom)
- Drain the oil, the oil will be quite black, this is normal.
- Screw the plug back in, don’t forget about the gasket
The oil will not all drain out, so you can use a vacuum hose to completely drain the oil.
The hose is a vacuum hose, because the walls do not compress. We insert one end of the hose into the filler hole of the gearbox, resting the hose against the bottom, the other end of the hose to the vacuum pump (or create a vacuum with our lungs), take the hose long so that oil does not get into the pump or be swallowed.
You can also wash the gearbox and drain the flushing fluid completely using this method. The oil drains well from the transfer case; there is no need to rinse it.
It is convenient to pour oil into the rear gearbox using this device
We insert the hose and pour new oil into the filler hole (upper), oil must be filled to the very edge of the hole.
We tighten the top plug on the gearbox and wipe off any traces of oil with a rag after replacement.
Let's move on to the transfer case
We remove the right front wheel (passenger side), you can simply turn it out if it is convenient.
The transfer case is located on the passenger side directly behind the wheel. See photo below.
We find the filler hole, which is also the control hole.
Transfer case oil level was normal.
To access the drain plug, you will have to partially remove the protection by unscrewing the six fastening bolts so that the protection hangs only on the front ones. The transfer case drain plug is indicated by an arrow.
The oil drains well from the transfer case; there is no need to rinse it.
Drain the oil and tighten the drain plug. We assemble the protection in reverse order.
The oil was poured everywhere exactly along the edge of the filler hole (it even spilled out a little).
The control and filler hole of the box is located in the same way as the dispensing hole, but on the left side.
The oil in the box was not changed, only the level was checked - almost level with the edge.

Replacement mode
The instructions for the car indicate that an oil change is not required throughout the entire service life. However, the Russian climate and roads are quite harsh, so you should adhere to the following recommendations for changing the oil:
- Carry out a scheduled replacement every 75 thousand kilometers.
- Under difficult driving conditions and aggressive driving conditions, do this every 25,000–30,000 km.
- Top up or change completely if the fluid level drops and there are leaks on the rear axle and transfer case.
- Carry out maintenance regularly and follow the recommendations of professionals.
Oil for transfer case, gearbox and axles of Renault Duster
Renault Duster is a compact urban crossover in the budget segment, produced since 2012. It is an off-road version of the first generation Renault Logan, released in 2004. To resemble a typical SUV, the car was given a stylish brutal design with massive wheel arches and a strict front end. Duster is a mass model, common in developing countries. In particular, the car is produced in Russia, Brazil, India and Colombia. In 2014, the millionth copy of Renault Duster was produced. By that time, an updated version of this model called Nissan Terrano had been released. Since 2015, the updated Renault Duster has been produced.
Renault Duster manual transmission oil
In accordance with the recommendations of the automaker, in cars with a manual transmission it is worth using ELF TRANSELF NFJ 75W80 gear oil. It has high fluidity at low temperatures, making it easier to shift gears in the cold, but still maintains sufficient viscosity at high temperatures.
A complex of special additives provides reliable protection of gear teeth even under very high loads, which allows the use of this oil in Renault Duster 4×4 gearboxes that are used in off-road conditions. Thanks to its oxidation resistance, ELF TRANSELF NFJ 75W80 effectively protects transmission elements from wear and corrosion throughout their entire service life.
It is officially recommended by Renault as a transmission oil for Duster with manual transmission.
Automatic transmission oil Renault Duster
Which oil to use in the Renault Duster 2.0 automatic transmission is regulated by the automaker's regulations. Renault recommends ELF RENAULTMATIC D3 SYN fluid for Duster with automatic transmission.
It has friction properties specially selected taking into account the materials of the parts used in DP0 gearboxes. This allows you to achieve maximum transmission of torque to the wheels and smooth shifting in all driving modes.
Normal way
To change the oil in the gearbox, you need to lift the car or place it on an inspection pit/overpass. After this, the drain plug is unscrewed. A hex wrench is used for this. The cork is marked in the photo. Before unscrewing, it is necessary to place a waste container with a volume of at least 2 liters under the hole.
Old oil may be darker in color, even black, because over time it can decompose into fractions and change its properties during operation. You also need to immediately stock up on a new O-ring so that you can install it immediately after replacement. Otherwise, a leak may appear in this place.
The gearbox on the Renault Duster is designed in such a way that during the replacement process it is not possible to drain everything completely, without using a vacuum hose. Therefore, you need to take a hose, rest one end against the gearbox, and connect the other end to a vacuum pump (or suck air through your mouth). You need to use a hose of sufficient length, and also have time to turn off the pump in time so that no oil gets into it.
It is also important to remember that cold oil has a high viscosity, and draining it will be problematic. Therefore, it is better for the Renault Duster transfer case to warm up; to do this, you need to drive the car for 10-15 minutes at low speed.
To do this, it is better to use a special washing liquid. It drains in the same way.
Fill in new oil.
This is best done with a long hose and funnel. Oil is poured until its level reaches the edge of the drain hole. After this, you need to immediately screw in the plug and wipe away any traces of leaks.
Replacement Regulations
So, when should you change the oil in the transfer case and rear axle of Renault Duster?
- When you reach a certain mileage on one replacement. Each car enthusiast will determine his own mileage limit.
- If traces of leaks are found on the bridge or transfer case. In this case, the fluid level may drop to a critical level and will have to be topped up or changed completely.
Oil selection
According to the Renault automaker, 4x4 Renault Duster oil - ELF TranselfFE 80W-90 - should be poured into the transmission. To the gearbox - 0.75 l, to the transfer case - 0.25 l. Those. One 1 liter package should be enough. But if you make the replacement yourself, it is advisable to stock up on a large amount because... overflows are possible. You can, of course, fill in oil with similar characteristics. In this case, only a full shift is performed.
Oil selection
Before changing the oil and pouring new oil into the Renault Duster gearbox, you need to decide on the brand of lubricant. To find out which gearbox of a given car is filled, you need to pay attention to the contents of the service book or look at the official data.
As a rule, the manufacturer pours the following brands of gear oils into Renault manual transmissions: TL8 or TL4 - Tranself or GL-4. There must be a mark stating that this oil is transmission oil. In some cases, but best of all, GL-5 is used in the rear axle gearbox.
In addition to the above, you can fill in any other transmission lubricant that has the appropriate approval for a given car brand and is applicable for gearboxes of most modern cars, especially SUVs.
Alternative way
This method may seem more complicated to some, but it allows you to do without a lift and inspection hole. A large syringe is used for this. It is sold in pharmacies and its usual purpose is to rinse the ears.
Work order:
- First you need to remove the front wheel or turn it all the way to the left to gain access to the filler plug.
- After this, you need to unscrew several bolts that hold the gearbox protection.
- After this, the oil is drained through a special hole. This method allows you to completely remove oils, so washing is not required.
- After changing the oil, you need to change the seal on the plug.
Gear protection
Renault Duster rear gear protection is usually not installed at the factory and is offered as an additional accessory. Installed on vehicles with all-wheel drive. Its body is made of aluminum alloy and is quite compact. But such material is quite fragile. When impacted, chips and cracks may immediately appear on it. Therefore, it is necessary to protect it from possible damage from stones, bumps and other obstacles.
How to change the oil in the Duster transfer case
The transmission design of all-wheel drive vehicles uses an additional gearbox that distributes the power flow between the axles. A supply of lubricant is provided inside the unit, which reduces the wear rate of gears and bearings. Changing the oil in the transfer case on a Renault Duster is regulated by the manufacturer and is carried out by the owner independently or under service conditions.
Changing the oil in the Renault Duster gearbox
When replacing fluid in a Renault Duster gearbox, a car enthusiast can go in two ways:
- Contact a specialized oil change service. There they will carry out all the work to replace the fluid in both the rear axle and the transfer case. The total service replacement time will be about 30 minutes. The price of the issue will be from 500 rubles to infinity.
- Carry out the replacement yourself. This method is not for everyone to tinker with the insides of the car. And if the car enthusiast has the skills and capabilities.
In the first case, everything is clear and understandable. All that is required is money and time. In the second case, you will need a set of tools and not crooked hands.
Required tools when carrying out work on your own:
- A syringe or other device for filling;
- Container for processing;
- Hex key for plug;
All operations can be performed without lifting the car. But it is advisable to use an overpass.
The process of changing the oil in the gearbox yourself consists of the following operations.
Drain the oil
The first step is to remove the gearbox protection (if there is one). The gearbox has filler and drain holes. Carefully unscrew the filler plug with a hexagon and check the oil level with a dipstick.
Attention: Be careful not to damage the plug gasket. Otherwise you will have to look for a new one.
If the transmission fluid is within normal limits and there were no plans for a complete change, tighten the plug. This concludes the process.
For a complete change, you need to unscrew the drain plug and place a container for used oil. When the liquid has completely drained, you can clean the gearbox with a vacuum pump. The pump will collect the remaining waste oil.
Flushing
The washing operation is optional, but recommended. It is necessary to flush the gearbox when changing the oil brand. A special wash is sold at a car dealership. The process of draining the rinse is identical to the drain described above.
Filling oil
After completing the previous operations, close the drain hole. Using a large syringe with a curved tip, pour the required amount of liquid through the filler hole. You can use various devices to perform this operation. The most popular and affordable is a plastic bottle with a 1-1.5 meter hose.
Transmission fluid is poured to the edge of the drain hole. Next, tighten the plug and wipe off any leaks that have arisen.
This completes the process of changing the oil in the gearbox.
Changing the oil in the transfer case
Changing the oil in the Renault Duster transfer case itself is simple and does not require special skills.
Replacement steps:
- Partially unscrew the protection (back part);
- Remove the front right wheel for full access to the technological holes of the transfer case (you don’t have to remove it, but then access will be difficult);
- Unscrew the filler and drain plugs;
- Drain the transmission through the drain hole.
- Screw in the drain plug. It is advisable to change the plug gasket;
- Fill the transmission through the filler (control) hole;
- Screw in the filler plug. It is advisable to change the plug gasket;
- Screw on the protection;
- Put the wheel in place.
Checking the oil level
To check the level in the transfer case you must:
- Install the crossover on a horizontal platform above the inspection hole or on a lift.
- Wipe the unit crankcase with a dry cloth and unscrew the plastic plug located on the top of the housing (to the right in the direction of movement of the machine).
- Insert your finger into the hole; a normal level of lubricant is considered to be located at the edge or 1-2 mm below the edge of the control channel. If the volume of liquid is insufficient, top up.
- Screw the plug into place by hand. The design of the plug includes a rubber seal; the part must be replaced in case of ruptures or visually noticeable deformation. If a damaged ring is used, some of the oil may escape onto the outer surface of the transfer gearbox.
To check the degree of filling of the rear axle gearbox housing, you need to unscrew the filling plug with a key and then insert your finger into the hole.
A correct level is considered to be 1-2 mm below the edge of the filler channel. If you cannot reach the surface of the lubricant with your finger, then you need to replenish the fluid supply. If there are no signs of lubricant leakage, then the fluid level remains unchanged during vehicle operation.
Which oil to choose
The manufacturer fills the transfer case and rear gearbox of the Renault Duster at the factory with TOTAL 80W90 mineral oil, which meets the API GL-5 specification (pour point - minus 27 degrees). Since such a temperature range is clearly not enough for a significant part of our country, it should be replaced with semi-synthetic transmission fluid Syn Fe 75W90 from the same manufacturer, which can operate normally at temperatures down to minus 50 degrees. The filling volume of the rear gearbox, according to the manual, is 0.55 liters; 0.4 liters are poured into the transfer case. Thus, regardless of what acceptable oil is poured into the Renault Duster transfer case and gearbox, it is enough to purchase a liter jar of fluid (if you do not simultaneously change the lubricant in the gearbox).
How much oil to fill
First generation HSA/HSM, since 2010
The Duster is based on the Nissan VO platform, common with the Nissan Juke and Renault Logan models. The platform has undergone significant changes to adapt to the new axles and Nissan All Mode 4x4 system, which is also used in Renault Koleos, Nissan Qashqai and Nissan Juke. The car is available with front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive, and the luggage compartment volume ranges from 475 to 1636 liters, depending on the position of the rear row seatbacks. Already in the basic configuration, the Duster has steel engine protection, and the ground clearance is 210 mm. In addition, thanks to short overhangs (approach angle - 30 degrees, departure angle - 35 degrees), the crossover performs well off-road among its competitors. In terms of safety, Duster is on the same level as the first generation Renault Logan.
