  3. To make sure the oil flows out better, first unscrew the filler plug or remove the speedometer gear. After draining the oil, screw the cap back on.
  4. We climb under the car and disconnect the fasteners of the gearbox lever driveshaft.
  5. Pull the boot off the cardan, unscrew the bolts securing it to the gearshift rod. Problematic fasteners that you will have to tinker with.
  6. After removing the cardan shaft, remove the rod boot.
  7. We remove the damaged oil seal using an awl or suitable available tools. The main thing here is the stock itself.
  8. We install a new one in place of the old oil seal and press it with a tube of the appropriate diameter.
  9. Put the boot back in place and rotate the driveshaft.
  10. Please note that the bolt securing the cardan to the rod is an adjustment bolt. Therefore, screw it in exactly the same way as before dismantling. Otherwise, some speeds may not turn on.

The instructions for replacing the cardan are as follows.

  1. Using two 13mm spanners, unscrew the clamp that relates to the speed switch drive rod.
  2. Pull the boot off with a screwdriver, moving towards the box. If you want, remove it completely. So it definitely won’t interfere with the repair process.
  3. Using a 10mm wrench, unscrew the fixing bolt on the cardan.
  4. Apply several gentle, not strong blows with a hammer to knock the cardholder off the shaft. Remove the boot to the side if you have not done so before.
  5. We replace the old cardan with a part from Kalina. It is more reliable, efficient and durable.
  6. For reassembly you will need the help of a friend. Do not rush to tighten the clamp immediately at the end.
  7. The assistant will set the position of the gearshift lever at the optimal points from inside the cabin. First you need to catch the center, then move the lever a little to the right while you tighten the clamps from below.
  8. Check if the gears engage well. If yes, then we continue assembling the unit and check the updated gearbox under real road conditions.

The next step is to put the drive rod on the rod. For some models, the stem from Kalina will have to be shortened by about 1.5 cm.

Probably everyone is familiar with this feeling when, in order to shift, you need to travel a long distance with your hand from the panel to the handbrake in search of the speed you need. In short, it feels like you're moving a lever in a big bucket of water and trying to find a gear. This is very inconvenient and those who have driven a VAZ for several years will understand me perfectly. At one point I got tired of this “search” and decided to install a short-throw rocker on my VAZ 2109.

A little history...

The short-throw rocker was first used by professional racing drivers, and this is where seconds make all the difference! I delayed switching a little and that was it - the victory went to someone else. The advantage of a short-stroke rocker is that it reduces the lever travel by half, which allows you to change gears faster and more accurately. And as usually happens, this idea was picked up by one of the folk “craftsmen” and implemented on a regular production car. Over time, serious enterprises began producing short-stroke rockers; as a result, today you can buy a short-stroke rocker for a VAZ 2109 and other car models without any problems. The cost is not always pleasing, as a rule, the price is too high, but it’s worth it, it’s better to overpay once than to suffer all your life. After I saw the short-stroke rocker on the VAZ 2109, I did not find any significant differences and simply understood what its essence was, after turning the design a little in my hands, I realized that I could very well make one at home without overpaying for anything. It turned out okay, but more on that later...

On modern cars there is no gear shift lever at all. The VAZ 2109 rocker mechanism mechanically transmits force to the gearbox actuator, and on modern cars even the manual transmission is controlled by a selector - a joystick. Its sensors transmit signals to the electronic control unit, and it, taking into account the readings of other sensors, generates commands to the actuators.

Changing gears on a VAZ 2109

The “nine” is equipped with a five-speed manual gearbox (Gearbox). The connection between the gear selection control lever and the gearbox actuators is purely mechanical. For this purpose, a steel rod is used, the lower end of which is fixed to a ball joint in the housing of the gear selection mechanism, and the upper end is equipped with a knob that fits comfortably in the driver’s hand. This lever, not entirely justifiably, is popularly called the “slide”.

In a classic backstage, the levers are connected using a slider that can move along it. It looks especially impressive when driving the drive wheels of a mainline steam locomotive. In an automobile rocker, the elements have a certain freedom; they are connected by a hinge, but the articulation point cannot move along the rocker. Nevertheless, the name stuck.

The gear change lever of the “nine” has two degrees of freedom with three positions in each: “forward - neutral - back” and “left - neutral - right”. This gives 9 selector position options, of which two (rear left and rear right) are not used. The remaining seven correspond to five forward gears, one reverse gear and neutral.

The standard VAZ 2109 rocker is called long-stroke because the attachment point of the rod leading to the gearbox is located quite close to the ball joint. The distance to the attachment point is approximately 4 cm. With a total length of the lever with a knob of 30 cm, in order to move the gearbox rod by only 2 cm, the gearbox handle must be moved by 15 cm. Plus the play - it turns out to be a very long-stroke option, and it cannot be configured otherwise.

A fashion came from motorsport - replacing the rocker with a decrease in stroke. The repair involves moving the rod attachment point up the slide by 5–6 centimeters. It turns out to be a short-throw shifter on a VAZ 2109, the stroke of the gear shift knob is halved. Many people like it.

The Kalina wing on the VAZ 2109 also improves the situation.

Good day, today I performed maintenance on the backstage with a Shumka on my nine, because... It started rattling at low speeds, everything was captured in the photo and description below.

1. We buy the necessary spare parts, namely:

-An eight-piece gearbox drive hinge (I bought it for 320 rubles) (But it’s better to take a short-stroke one from Kalina) -The gearbox drive Sharnia boot (if it’s very old, torn or you really want it) -Repair kit for the backstage (56 rubles) -Gerlen (sound insulation, etc.) i.e. not foil but fabric) (1m - 160 rubles) -CV joint or lithol.

2. Remove the beard from the gearshift lever.

We unscrew the casing under the stove, now it’s more convenient to remove the beard, don’t forget about the self-tapping screw on the rear seat side. All beard is removed and the drawstring is accessible.

3. Unscrew and remove the slide.

We remove the retaining ring (I originally had a bolt), separate the lever, now take a convenient tool, also known as a wrench, and unscrew all
5 bolts
; remove the ball (the spherical pin of the lever). I pressed it with my foot and took it to a bend, the ball came out. Now we take the repair kit. We take out the plastic lever support (the ball joint of the lever), lightly smear any place with lithol (it will squeeze out anyway), insert the ball, not forgetting to thread it through the iron frame (gear shift lever housing). Ok, now we take a piece of guerlain and separate the adhesive mass with the fabric and we push it into the base of the plastic support so that everything sticks out a little for further shrinkage, assembled

Comparison of short and long stroke

Car enthusiasts describe the difference in options as fantastic. The renovation dramatically improves ergonomics. The amplitude of movements of the gear shift knob decreases by two to three times, but the force on its tip increases. The increase is quite acceptable, since gear shifting occurs in an unloaded state with the clutch depressed and does not require any serious effort.

Some experts believe that an increase in the shoulder leads to an increase in forces on the gearbox rods and to additional wear on the gearbox. There is no statistical confirmation of this point of view yet. Unfortunately, it is not possible to order a short-stroke configuration from the factory. You must install it yourself at your own risk. AvtoVAZ does not approve of such changes in the design of the Nine.

Independent modernization of the design associated with welding the levers lengthens them, and the height of the gearshift knob above the tunnel increases by about 5 cm. Such alteration requires welding work and the involvement of an experienced specialist, for whom cutting the levers using a grinder, installing a pipe and a strip of the appropriate section , and also welding the levers is not difficult.

The adjustment changes the ergonomics, but due to the reduction in the strokes of the shift knob, it is not perceived as a deterioration.
