Author: Ivan Baranov
Installing an EUR on a Granta Standard is a common reason for the owners of these cars to contact a car service center. However, with proper skill, you can easily do everything yourself. Read the article about how to install such a system if you have a Lada Granta and whether it’s worth doing it at all.

Cars of the Lada Grant family are equipped with power steering as standard. Electromechanical power steering (hereinafter referred to as EPS) is installed individually by the owners.
Electromechanical power steering
ESD is a relatively new development of modular control, which, like power steering, has advantages and disadvantages.
Positive aspects and possibilities of use
There are quite a lot of advantages of electric power steering; it seems to me that soon almost all manufacturers will switch to this type, completely abandoning hydraulics. And now point by point:
- Economical. The electric booster allows you to save from 0.5 to 0.8 liters per 100 km. It is not connected to the engine by a rigid belt, and therefore does not take power from it, but consumes it only when needed. For example, at idle speed it does not work at all, while the power steering is constantly connected to the crankshaft.
- Reliability. Here it is higher, especially if the electric motor is located inside the car. There are no hoses, no fluids, no other parts.
- Service. It's practically not needed here! the ATF fluid in the tank after a certain mileage to restore performance.
- Silence of work. If the power steering, having caught air, can hum or make noise , then this is unlikely to happen with the EUROM. YES, and a working unit is much quieter.
- Node cost. If we take it as a whole, especially the first type, then it is lower than that of its hydraulic counterpart, but the repair is often much higher, because the sensors or entire elements are changed.
- Programmable operation. If you can’t simply turn off the power steering, then this can easily happen with the power steering, and it can be programmed. For example, at low speeds we need a lot of effort on the steering wheel, but when picking up speed we don’t need much effort, in fact the steering wheel is already well controlled. This is where the electrical amplifier can also be switched off by software, again saving fuel. YES, and many cars have a forced shutdown switch, this is again a plus.
Operating principle of the EUR
Every time you turn the steering wheel, the torsion shaft twists. Information about this process is transmitted from the torque sensor to the control unit online.
Based on the information received, the electronic control unit (hereinafter referred to as the ECU) accumulates information and reads readings from other sensors. The ECU transmits a signal to the electric motor, which increases the torque of the steering rack shaft by activating the electric motor.
Information is processed so quickly that tenths of seconds pass from the moment of transmission to the moment of reading.
Is it worth installing electric power steering?
Driving a car without electric power steering is, of course, possible. But if you have previously driven a car equipped with such a system, you may experience serious discomfort. You will be deprived of the usual electric motor support.
Installing such a mechanism has certain difficulties and is also associated with costs. But they will all pay off in a comfortable ride and increased safety for you and your passengers.
Thus, the answer to the question “Is it worth installing?” – this is a definite “Yes”. Even if you don't want to do it yourself, contact a car service.
In the video below you will find a comparison of the advantages of power steering and power steering (the author of the video is AVTOTEMA TV).
Possible malfunctions of the EUR
It happens that after installation the EUR does not work at all or intermittently.
This can be caused by various reasons, among which two most often stand out:
- Speed sensor failure. The electric power steering operates in connection with the speed sensor. At high speeds, the extra force from the mechanism is reduced to give you more control. If data from the sensor stops flowing, the EUR will automatically turn off. The problem is solved by replacing the sensor.
- Incorrectly installed engine crankcase. If there is a violation in the installation of the engine crankcase (casing), vibrations from the engine will be transmitted to the amplifier. It will begin to buzz, and in some cases even turn off.
Possible malfunctions of the EUR on the Lada Grante Liftback (Sedan)
Malfunction | Diagnosis | Elimination method |
The diode on the side pillar glows due to a faulty speed sensor. | Checking the serviceability of the speed sensor by dismantling it and ringing it with a multimeter. | Replacement of the sensor with a new one, since the design is not subject to repair (partial, complete). |
Low voltage in electrical wiring. | Checking the integrity of the insulating layer and contact terminals. | Replacement of damaged cable sections, insulation of connection points. |
The electric amplifier rotates slowly. | Checking the voltage supply to the input contacts from the relay regulator. | Replacing the relay regulator. |
During rotation, a characteristic creaking, metallic grinding sound is heard. | Dismantling the EUR, disassembling it into its component elements, checking the condition of the rolling bearings. | Replacement of two rolling bearings with new ones. |
Negative points
They also exist and, in principle, I listed them in this article, but now I’ll repeat myself a little:
- Inferior information content of the steering wheel (hydraulics, more precisely for now)
- Electrical failures in settings. The sensor (steering wheel or shaft) may go off and, for example, when parking, turn the wheels to the side, when you should keep them straight. Moreover, it is quite difficult to align the wheels.
- Traffic disruptions. IN early versions there were accidents due to blocking or glitches of the EURA
- Electrical component. As a rule, it is not repaired, but often changed, BECAUSE YOUR SAFETY DEPENDS ON IT. That is, you should not “re-solder” the steering wheel or shaft position sensor, because you can enter incorrect parameters into the circuit. It's better to change it. The engine is also completely replaced when it fails, which is not cheap.
- Repairs are not always needed. Often, due to high mileage or clogging, you simply need to calibrate the sensors; you cannot do this yourself; again, you need to go to a service station. And if it is not clean, they may charge you for repairs.
Rack-and-pinion steering with electric power steering is UNDOUBTEDLY THE FUTURE, but there are still many crude types that power steering is superior to in many ways.
Let's watch an educational video.
This is where I end, I think my material was useful to you. Sincerely yours, AUTOBLOGGER.

Installation instructions
Steering wheel Grants Standard
This manual is intended for those who have minimal skills in working with tools and vehicle systems. It is made as accessible as possible to everyone. But if you doubt your skills and knowledge, it is better to contact a car service.
Required tools and materials
First of all, you will need the EUR itself. Please note its serial number. The last two digits indicate the type and place of production.
So, 00 is a geared amplifier, produced in Makhachkala and has received complaints from drivers. With the numbers 04 - Korean, installed on Grants and Kalinas, a good amplifier, can be found in stores, but there are few of them on sale. Well, 02 - Kaluga, gearless type, also has good reviews.
To connect, you will need common tools such as screwdrivers, wrenches, and an angle grinder.
Installation process
First, you will need to completely remove elements such as the airbag, steering wheel, switches, ignition switch, and finally the steering column along with the bracket and cardan.
Then do everything as follows:
- Taking the old bracket-plate, knock out the bolts from it. Then cut off about 30 mm from the top (where 2 bolts are welded and there are 3 holes).
- Try the plate on the EUR, if the holes do not match (most likely this will happen), drill them.
- Now you need to attach the gimbal to the amplifier.
- You need to put washers under the bracket at the point of attachment to the amplifier. They can be of different thicknesses and have a direct impact on future steering adjustments.
- Now you can attach the EUR. Insert the cardan onto the rack.
After all this you need to connect the wiring. Below is the connection diagram.
