How to change the oil in a Daewoo Matiz engine with your own hands?

Stages of replacing lubricant Daewoo Matiz

The lubrication system of Daewoo Matiz has a very important function, to keep the engine in working condition. Therefore, undergoing timely maintenance to change the oil is a necessary condition. In addition to the main functions of motor oil, it also helps restore normal heat exchange.

The cars on the market are equipped with 0.8 liter and 1.0 liter petrol engines. This also applies to older models, as well as those that have undergone restyling. Therefore, the replacement process in them will be similar.

In the instructions we will consider replacing the coolant using the Matiz 0.8 as an example.

Draining waste fluid

To drain oil from the Daewoo Matiz engine, it is desirable to have a pit or overpass. If this is a problem, then any flat surface will do; you can combine the replacement with a trip to the country. The oil filter is located in a convenient place; unscrewing it will not be a problem.

All that remains is to reach the drain plug on the pan. If engine protection is installed, the process becomes more complicated, but it is possible to remove it. Therefore, we install the machine on a suitable flat area, remove the protection and proceed to the draining process:

  1. Raise the hood, then find the filler neck on the engine and unscrew the plug (Fig. 1).

    Fig.1 Oil filler neck

  2. Now we go down under the car and place a waste container in the drainage area. You can use a cut canister or an old bucket.
  3. We unscrew the drain plug with a wrench or a 17mm socket (Fig. 2).

    Fig.2 Drain plug

  4. On some engines, the drain plug on the pan is not located at the lowest point, so there is still about 150-250 milliliters of waste remaining in it. To remove them, you can use a rubber bulb or a syringe with a hose attached to it (Fig. 3).

    Fig.3 Pumping out residues with a syringe

  5. Now you need to unscrew the old oil filter, which is located in a readily accessible place on the engine (Fig. 4). If your car is equipped with air conditioning, then for better access you need to unscrew the bolt by 10 to remove the air filter resonator. But on Matiz cars with a 1.0-liter engine capacity, the filter needs to be unscrewed from the bottom. Since there is additional equipment installed on top that makes access difficult.

    Fig.4 Oil filter

To unscrew the filter element, it is advisable to have a special puller. If it is not available, you can try to unscrew the filter using improvised means. For these purposes, you can use, for example, an old alternator belt, a regular belt, a bicycle chain or a simple screwdriver.

Unscrewing the oil filter using improvised means

This method produces the most complete drainage of old engine oil. Despite the seemingly complex process, there should not be any particular difficulties. All elements have free access, and a big plus is the ability to perform the operation on any flat surface.

Flushing the lubrication system

Engine flushing on a Daewoo Matiz car should only be carried out in exceptional cases, which include:

  1. Purchasing a used car when you cannot be sure of the quality and regularity of lubricant replacements.
  2. During operation, the service replacement interval was repeatedly exceeded.
  3. Engine operation with constant frequent overheating, which contributes to coking and other deposits.
  4. In cases of switching to another type of oil, for example from synthetic to semi-synthetic.

There are several types of flushes for the Daewoo Matiz engine:

  • Five- or seven-minute, capable of cleaning even the most difficult deposits. They must be used very carefully and strictly follow the instructions printed on the packaging. It is recommended to use them only when absolutely necessary. Since there is a high probability of causing premature wear of the sealing seals. And also clog the oil channels with particles of washed away carbon deposits.
  • Special compounds that are added to the oil several hundred kilometers before the expected change. They are more gentle, but there is also a possibility of clogging of the oil channels.
  • Flushing oil is the most gentle method of cleaning the engine from the inside. This composition is poured after draining the waste, the engine runs for 15-20 minutes, after which the liquid with deposits is drained. The absence of aggressive additives in the wash composition gently cleans the engine, but is not able to remove heavy contaminants.
  • Regular oil that you are going to use when changing. This method is not so popular due to its high cost.

Before washing your Daewoo Matiz, you should weigh all the pros and cons. And also understand that it will not be possible to completely drain the liquid. Some of it will remain in the channels, which will then mix with the new oil.

Installing a filter, filling in new engine fluid

If the Daewoo Matiz lubrication system is sealed and does not require repair work to eliminate leaks, you can proceed to adding fresh oil. In addition to the oil itself, we will need a new gasket-washer for the drain plug GM 94525114. As well as the original GM oil filter 25183779.

Consumables

When everything is ready, let's move on to the bay:

  1. Replace the drain plug with a new washer.
  2. We tighten and put the oil filter in place. Pre-lubricate the rubber sealing ring with fresh oil.
  3. Pour new oil into the filler neck.
  4. We check the level on the dipstick; it should be between the MIN and MAX marks.
  5. We start the engine, let it run for 10-15 seconds, then turn it off.
  6. After 5 minutes, check the level with a dipstick and top up if necessary.

There are several opinions regarding replacing the oil filter. Many car owners advise filling it with new oil before installation. However, nothing is said about this in the official operating instructions for the Daewoo Matiz. And also in information from global filter manufacturers it is recommended to simply lubricate the o-ring.

Ways to distinguish a fake from an original filter

Installing a fake on a Daewoo Matiz is fraught with a significant reduction in engine life. Therefore, General Motors endows its products with a number of characteristic features by which the original can be identified.

First of all, the car owner should pay attention to the packaging. The fake box has paler colors. The picture on it may vary. Often spelling and other errors can be found on counterfeit documents. The original must not have any printing defects.

When examining the packaging externally, attention should be paid to the font. The original has notches that make it easier to read the inscription. A counterfeit letter may be skewed, blurred, or written in different fonts.

The original and counterfeit packaging open differently. The box of the branded product is sealed, and its lid consists of two parts. Counterfeit products open freely, and the lid has only one part.

You can identify a fake by examining the filter itself. The original has a different shape and is slightly taller than the counterfeit. All inscriptions on the branded filter are clear and free of errors.

There is also a difference when examining the oil filter from above. The original has a high-quality holographic sticker. It is made of material that does not allow it to be transferred to another product. A fake hologram is either of low quality or completely absent.

There are differences between the original and the fake on the underside of the consumable. The branded filter has holes that are located closer to those of the original, smaller and not so striking.

When disassembling a counterfeit, you may find that the area of the filter element is smaller and the quality of the paper is extremely low. In some cases there are tears and through holes.

To determine design differences without opening the filter, it is recommended to measure its weight. For a fake it is usually smaller than for the original. Also, do not pay attention to consumables whose price is significantly lower than the market average.

Features of "Daewoo Matiz"

“Daewoo Matiz,” as many experts note, is quite picky about the type of oil that the owner pours into it. As practice shows, in order to avoid a huge number of problems, you should strictly adhere to the recommendations given by the manufacturer. The motorist should know that the process of changing the oil must begin with replacing the lubricant, which is present in the Daewoo Matiz power units, regardless of the volume of the device. You should be aware that a larger engine capacity will require a little more lubricant.

Leaks and problems

The longer the mileage of the Daewoo Matiz, the more problems appear, as in principle with any car. Most often this is due to natural wear and tear of the engine. If before the mileage reaches 200,000 kilometers, you can try to correct this by increasing the viscosity. Then even on long runs you need to overhaul the engine.

All this is general information, which may manifest itself differently on each specific vehicle, since everyone’s operating modes are different. The same applies to leak locations; it is impossible to identify the cause from a distance.

Replacement Regulations

For 15 years, during which the city hatchback was produced, Daewoo Matiz was equipped with two types of engines of 0.8 and 1 liter. The difference between these power units, in addition to recoil and thrust level, is that the latter has a long service life. However, the maintenance requirements for both engines are the same.

According to the car instructions, the manufacturer advises changing the filter and oil in Matiz every 10 thousand kilometers. But this is the deadline. It is better if the procedure is carried out every 9 thousand kilometers. Moreover, during this period it is recommended to constantly (approximately every two weeks) monitor the remaining lubricant and the condition of the filter.

The right motor oil

The choice of oil for Daewoo Matiz depends on the personal preferences of the car owner and the size of the budget. At the same time, when purchasing lubricant, it is necessary to take into account the general recommendations of the manufacturer. In addition, if the owner of a hatchback has changed one brand of fluid to another, then during the first 2-3 thousand kilometers it is necessary to regularly monitor the condition of the filter and the filled material.

Manufacturer's recommendations

The manufacturer recommends several types of oils for Daewoo Matiz. For owners living in regions with a temperate climate, products with the following markings are suitable:

Despite such limited requirements from the manufacturer for the lubricant, various liquids can be poured into Matiz. That is, the Daewoo company does not name any specific brands of oil.

Which one to choose

It is quite difficult to immediately decide which oil to fill in the Daewoo Matiz. Reviews of hatchback owners who recommend purchasing the following products help solve this issue:

Other lubricants can be used for Daewoo Matiz. Products from Lukoil, Shell, ZIC, General Motors and other manufacturers are suitable for this hatchback.

Replacement frequency, what oil to fill

According to the manufacturer's regulations, engine oil service changes are carried out after 10,000 kilometers or at intervals of six months. But many motorists consider this interval to be very high, recommending that it be reduced taking into account operating conditions.

At the factory, the Daewoo Matiz model may be filled with oil from different suppliers, but most often it is Shell Helix Ultra 5W-30. Official dealers can also fill in lubricating fluid from different manufacturers; the most common is synthetic Castrol Magnatec 5w30.

According to the passport and the operating instructions, the tolerances that the engine oil must have are given. The main thing is the API class: SJ and higher, it is also worth taking into account the viscosity according to SAE. For use in cold and temperate regions, 5W-30 should be used. In hot weather, 15W-40 or 10W-30 is used.

The manufacturer's recommendation indicates the use of original oil, in this case it is GM Dexos2 5w30. But it is worth understanding that all this applies to engines with relatively low mileage.

For mileages over 100 thousand kilometers, when the first signs of burnout begin to appear, you should switch from synthetics to semi-synthetics. It is also advisable to increase the viscosity to 10W-40, but it should be taken into account that fuel consumption will increase. A good choice would be a lubricant from the Elf company labeled Elf Evolution 700 STI 10W-40.

According to reviews, on engines over 200 thousand, the oil begins to leak much more. You can try to reduce the increased zhor with even greater viscosity. But as a rule, without major repairs, the problem cannot be solved.

Checking the volume and condition of the oil

For this procedure, you will need a dipstick that will show the level of remaining oil. It has Max and Min marks, between which there should be a liquid imprint - this level is considered the most optimal. If the oil is below the Min mark, then the oil will have to be added. It is important to prevent overflow, because then you will have to drain the consumables.

If the oil has become unusable, which usually happens with high mileage or untimely replacement, then adding fluid alone will not be enough. Here you will need a comprehensive cleaning of the engine from dirt deposits and metal shavings. In such cases, the oil smells burnt and has a dark brown color.

Preparing for work

Before changing the oil, you need to carefully prepare for work. The procedure will require certain tools and supplies.

Required tools and accessories:

  • A set of hex keys or wrenches;
  • Screwdriver;
  • Pliers;
  • Container for waste oil fluid;
  • Rags;
  • Special clothing and gloves;
  • Fresh oil;
  • Oil filter;
  • Oil filter puller;
  • Sealing washer for drain plug.

Replacing the air filter

To change the Matiz engine air filter, unscrew the screw on the plastic casing, open the cover, take out the old air filter and install a new one. The air filter for Matiz can be obtained from PARTS-MALL, its number is PAC-011, and not the original GM 96314494, which costs more. Then tighten a couple of bolts (self-tapping screws) of the cover on the housing and remove the old filter element. When installing a new one, make sure it fits evenly and tightly.

This completes the oil and filter change for Daewoo Matiz.
