  • Using a special syringe, diesel fuel or motor oil diluted with kerosene is placed here.
  • Then, the plug must be returned to its place.
  • It is necessary to hang the rear axle by placing supports under the front wheels.

Firstly, there are manufacturer recommendations, and you should not neglect them. If GAZ recommended gearbox oil with certain characteristics, you can purchase a more expensive and high-quality oil, but not a cheaper one.

Secondly, the gearbox and the bridge operate under completely different conditions, both in terms of load and thermal conditions.

Thirdly, if the crankshaft can turn the gearbox shaft in cold weather, even if the oil has “frozen,” then the gearbox will definitely not be able to “turn” the axle.

What does it mean? This means that gearbox oil must be more durable, less viscous and resistant to sub-zero temperatures. Seems obvious. But axle oil should be even more frost-resistant and at the same time more viscous. There is no paradox here - these are units that work in the “counter direction” and we must keep in mind that the start of the checkpoint is not the start of the “bridge”, and a beautiful canister is not always a good thing.

This is why gearbox oils must be chosen not from brands (it doesn’t work for a gazelle - we don’t have the same clearances yet), but from experience. In a vehicle, the rear axle gearbox of a Gazelle car is located in the rear axle housing, to which it is attached using special bolts, and is divided into a differential and a final drive. On the sides, the rear axle axle shafts are connected to the gearbox, through which it transmits torque, receiving it from the vehicle’s power plant. The rear axle housing is made of stamped steel sheets using welding. The remaining components of the rear axle are attached to the crankcase itself: gearbox amplifier, brake regulator struts, shock absorbers with brackets.

The main gear in Gazelle cars, as well as the gearbox, are hypoid, so replacing them, which, by the way, is extremely rarely necessary, needs to be done only in pairs. The driven gear of the gearbox is attached to the differential using bolts. The differential itself runs on 2 tapered roller bearings. All adjustments to these bearings are made by unscrewing or tightening the adjusting nuts.

The rear axle gearbox of the Gazelle vehicle uses GL-5 type gear oil. Changing the oil in the main gear of a car should only be done when the car is hot; if this is not the case, the car should be driven at least a few kilometers. The higher the heating, the more used oil can be removed, and the better its replacement will be. The total volume of transmission oil in the main gearbox of the rear axle in the Gazelle is equal to 1.3 liters. When repairing a gearbox, it is necessary to dismantle it from the vehicle. On “old” Gazelle models, this process was considered quite labor-intensive work. In modern models everything is much simpler, just unscrew the bolts, disconnect the cardan and axle shafts, and then remove the gearbox.

Replacement process

Before starting work, the machine must be warmed up well. This will allow the fluid in the rear axle gearbox to drain faster and more completely. This process can take quite a long time. You just need to be patient. In addition, any particles in the oil will rise and mix with the fluid in the gearbox, allowing them to be removed when the oil mixture is drained.

  1. We clean the breather, which is located in the rear axle housing. Then turn the cap several times.
  2. We find the plug on the drain hole and unscrew it using a 12mm hex key.
  3. Let the old oil drain into a previously placed container. Typically, the volume of waste liquid is approximately 3 liters.

  4. We check the quality of the drained oil. If it is too dirty - almost black and cloudy, or there are a lot of foreign impurities in the form of metal inclusions, then it is necessary to flush the gearbox.
  5. We put the plug in place. Before installation, it is necessary to thoroughly clean all metal deposits from the magnet on the cover.
  6. Next, you need to remove the plug from the hole for filling the transmission mixture (with a hex wrench).
  7. Using an oil syringe, pour a little more than 2 liters of transmission fluid or diesel fuel, or motor oil with the addition of 20 - 30% kerosene, into this hole in the crankcase.
  8. We screw the plug into its original place.
  9. We put supports under the front wheels, lift them and thereby hang the rear axle.

  10. We start the engine and select first gear. Let the machine run for about 5 minutes.
  11. We repeat the process of draining the washing mixture. This will take approximately 5 minutes.
  12. Clean the drain plug again and screw it into place.
  13. We remove the filler plug again and use a syringe to pour approximately 3 liters of new transmission fluid into the crankcase.
  14. We control the required level.
  15. The oil in the gearbox will also lubricate the bearings on the rear wheels.
  16. It is necessary to further process the hubs; to do this, we alternately raise the right and left wheels with a jack by about 30 cm, for 10 minutes each.
  17. Once again, check the fluid level in the gearbox and, if necessary, top up to the required level.

The gazelle is a very reliable helper, so don’t be lazy in caring for it. Overhauling the rear gearbox or buying a new one is extra and quite a lot of money. It is much more profitable to replace the transmission fluid on time.
