Step-by-step check of the amount of oil in the Lada Granta gearbox

According to technical regulations, it is recommended to change the oil in the Lada Granta gearbox after every 75 thousand km or once every five years (depending on which condition occurs first). Unscheduled inspection and replacement are required if:

  • drips appear on the transmission housing;
  • difficulties arise when shifting the gearshift lever;
  • first or last gear does not engage;
  • The box makes strange sounds, especially when starting the car.

Checking the oil level in the Lada Granta gearbox and topping up should be carried out annually.

Checking the oil level in the Lada Granta gearbox

The procedure includes several stages:

  1. Preparing the vehicle and necessary equipment.
  2. Direct level measurement.
  3. Add oil (done if necessary).

Several types of gearboxes were installed on the Lada Granta:

  • Five-speed manual transmission 2180 series with rod drive. Installed on cars produced in 2011-2012.
  • Manual transmission series 2181. Installed since 2013. The rod drive has been replaced with a cable drive. The speed selection mechanism is located outside the housing.
  • Four-speed automatic transmission JF414E with torque converter.
  • Robotic gearbox AMT 2182. Created on the basis of the manual transmission 2180. Instead of cables and a clutch pedal, an electromechanical drive is installed.

The procedure for measuring and adding oil in different boxes is different.

Preparatory work

Place the car on a flat surface, turn off the engine and allow it to cool. On models with automatic transmission, before turning off the ignition:

  1. The lever is moved from position P to position 1.
  2. After a short pause, move the lever to position 2.
  3. Consistently translate 2 => D => N => R => P.

Before each switching, take a short break of 5-10 seconds. The engine must be running. When the lever returns to position P, the engine is turned off.

Air filter on grant

Open the hood of the car and find the installation location of the air filter, remove it along with the housing.

To check the oil in the 8 grade Grants box, use a dipstick. If the car has a cable-driven gearbox (index 2181), the oil level is determined through the inspection hole. There is no oil dipstick in these models. To control, you will need a hole, a suitable key and a clean rag. You can also stock up on protective gloves.

How is the dipstick used?

The oil measuring rod on the Lada Granta liftback is located under the plastic box where the air filter is installed. Some car owners get to it by slightly moving the filter to the side. Others prefer to remove the case, allowing free access to the box.

To check the oil in the 8 grade Grants box, remove the dipstick from the hole and wipe it dry. At the end of the metal rod there are 2 marks – min and max. Carefully place the “oil meter” inside and remove it again. Assess the amount of lubricating fluid. Normally, the mark should be between “min.” and "max." risks. If there is not enough oil in the box, you need to add it.

When checking, you need to look not only at the amount of oil, but also at its condition: color, density, transparency.

Determining the oil level in various types of boxes

Automatic boxes "Lada Grants" are equipped with probes with handles placed outside. The end is marked COLD and HOT. The first is used to check the amount of liquid in a cooled car. The second shows the level after heating.

Checking the oil level in the Lada Granta gearbox is carried out in the standard way:

  1. Wipe the dipstick thoroughly with a clean cloth. There should be no lint from rags on the surface - when they get into the oil, they contaminate it, which can lead to breakdowns. It is not recommended to clean the metal rod with water or detergents.
  2. The dipstick is lowered in again until it stops. Take it out and determine the level.

Checking the oil level in the Lada Granta gearbox

In a manual transmission there are several options for checking the oil:

  • The simplest is using a probe. The procedure for measuring the level is the same as for an automatic transmission.
  • Since 2013, boxes of the 2181 series have been installed on the Lada Granta. Their design does not include a probe. To determine the amount of oil, you need to unscrew the control plug on the box body. Normally, liquid should be visible near the lower edge of the inspection hole. If the level cannot be determined visually, you can lower a screwdriver or wire into the hole. It is not possible to measure the quantity in this way, but you can assess the condition of the oil, its color and density, as well as the presence of foreign impurities.

If there is not enough oil in the box, you need to add it to the required amount.

How much oil to add

It is necessary to add lubricant to the gearbox to the volume specified in the operating manual. It depends on the type of transmission and year of manufacture of the car:

  • the total oil volume in the automatic transmission is 5.1 liters;
  • cars with manual transmission produced before 2013 are equipped with a traction drive - they require 3.1 liters of transmission fluid;
  • more recent “Grants” models are equipped with a manual transmission with a cable drive, for which the oil volume is 2.3 liters;
  • The amount of liquid in the robot is 2 liters.

When topping up, you must use only the brand of oil that is already in the box. An exception can be made in an emergency situation due to a severe leak. In this case, you can add another oil to get to the nearest service station. After repair, the lubricant in the box must be completely replaced.

When choosing a lubricant, they are guided by the degree of its viscosity. The manufacturer allows the use of products with a viscosity of 75W-80, 75W-85, 75W-90, 80W-85 or 80W-90. The best oils are those with ratings of 75W-90 and 80W-90.

When assembling a car at the AvtoVAZ plant, Lukoil TM-4 oil is poured into the box. In addition to it, the owners of Lada Granta use the brands TNK Trans KP, Rosneft Kinetic, and Shell Spirex. Genuine GM EJ-1 ATF and NISSAN ATF Matic-S are suitable for models with automatic transmission .

Conclusion

Having considered the suitable options, you can decide on the best oil for the Lada Granta automatic transmission. It is better to use a quality product, which does not have to be expensive and original. This can be seen judging by the presence on the market of quite good analogues from the companies Mobil, Castrol, ZIC, ExxonMobil, Lukoil, etc.

Good day to all. One of our clients has a Lada Granta car with an automatic transmission. Before this, he constantly bought oil for the engine, and today he decided to change the oil in the box. And accordingly, he had a question about choosing an oil in Grant’s automatic transmission. That is why I decided to write this article. By the way, if the topic of domestic cars has already begun, I recommend that you read the article at your leisure: Oil in the VAZ 2110 gearbox.

The Lada Granta with automatic transmission appeared on the Russian market not so long ago. An ordinary Granta was taken, the familiar mechanics were taken out of it, a Japanese Jatco JF414E automatic was installed and the whole thing was put into production. Here is the recipe for the famous Granta on the machine. In principle, the machine itself is quite reliable. And with proper maintenance and attitude it will not cause any trouble. Although today this machine is installed only on a couple of models. This is our Granta and Nissan March (Micra).

How to check the Grant gearbox oil level, where is the dipstick located?

First, let's look at the gearbox. If it bears the index 2181, then it is useless to look for the dipstick, it is not there. This is a cable driven gearbox and the oil level is monitored by an inspection hole in the crankcase. Visually, this gearbox is distinguished by its gear shift knob. Here she is.

Shift knob for new cable-operated gearbox

The old-style gearbox, VAZ 2190, on which gear shifting was carried out using the scenes, has such a shift knob and on this box there is a dipstick for checking the level.

Old gearbox shift knob

On this gearbox, the dipstick is located in a standard place - in the area of the air filter. The location of the probe is not the most convenient, but you can get to it from under the air duct, as shown in the photo.

Design features of the Jatco gearbox

We are talking about an automatic transmission installed on Lada cars. The automatic transmission design has a dipstick that allows you to control the oil level. But the control is carried out when the engine is running, and it will be impossible to get to the dipstick without removing the filter.

This dipstick is even more convenient than on a manual transmission

Consider that instead of a dipstick, only a plug is installed. In fact, this is the case for many - if you remove the filter, you can see the “plug” and not the dipstick.

How to check?

In order to check the oil level in the gearbox, you need to carry out a number of simple operations:

  1. Turn off the engine (check with the engine off).
  2. Remove the filter housing.
  3. Remove the fluid level indicator from the hole in the gearbox.

  4. Wipe the pointer and put it back again until it stops.
  5. Remove the pointer.

  6. We look carefully, if the fluid level in the gearbox is between MIN and MAX, then everything is in order, if it is lower, then it needs to be topped up to the norm.

The level is checked only “when cold”.

The oil is filled with Dextron: either 2nd class or 3rd class. The oil dipstick should indicate what type of oil is in the gearbox.

Selecting automatic transmission fluid

Automatic transmission fluids differ in viscosity index. Substances that have a synthetic base are popular. Experts recommend replacing every 40,000-60,000 km. Timely replacement of the automatic transmission oil on a vehicle can increase the service life of the transmission.

Properties that gear oil must have:

  • extend the service life of the gearbox;
  • provide effective lubrication of the rubbing parts of the box;
  • resistance to low temperatures;
  • high performance characteristics.

Nissan - ATF Matic-S

What kind of oil is recommended to be added to the automatic transmission? For Lada, Nissan fuel is suitable - ATF Matic-S, Genuine EJ-1. When purchasing cheap analogues, there is a risk of rapid failure of transmission elements, and the driver will encounter problems with the functioning of the box.

Thus, for automatic transmission you should use a fluid that is recommended by the Lada manufacturer. This unit is demanding on transmission fluid. Partial replacement is advisable if the oil level is low or darkened. There are no difficulties during this procedure.

Preparing for replacement

Before changing the oil in the Lada Granta box, read the operating manual to know the description and name of the components with which you will interact. The operating manual also explains the location of the drain and fill holes.

Immediately 15 minutes before starting work, drive the car a little so that the old “transmission” warms up - then it will be easier to drain it.

To change the oil at Grant, you will need a set of equipment:

  • flathead screwdriver;
  • ring wrench at “17” and ring wrench at “10”;
  • container for “working off”;
  • a funnel with a hose at the end (the diameter of the hose should be less than 2mm);
  • “pit” or overpass for access to the bottom of the Lada.

Also, be sure to stock up on clean rags to wipe away any oil spills. Before replacing, you need to “de-energize” the car by turning off the battery terminal with the key to “10”.

How to top up

If during checking the oil level in the gearbox does not reach the minimum mark, it must be topped up. First, the car is driven onto a pit or overpass: the car must stand level.

One end of a narrow rubber tube is inserted into the control hole. On the other side, attach a funnel of a suitable diameter. You can take a special syringe for topping up and replacing the transmission (sold in auto stores).

Oil filling and draining

Add oil in small portions inside the box. Then a second check is carried out (with a rod or through a control hole). The level on the dipstick should be between the min and max marks on the side with o. For cable-driven models, the fluid should reach the edge of the inspection hole.

After this, you need to drive a little (10-20 km) and look at the level again. If necessary, add fluid again. The procedure for adding oil to an automatic transmission is the same as for a manual transmission.

When to change the oil in a Granta manual transmission

According to science, changing the oil in a manual Grant gearbox, regardless of the type of drive of the shift mechanism, should be carried out no more than after 200,000 km. At least that's what the manufacturer says. But we understand that replacing the mineral slurry that was poured in from the factory should be carried out immediately after running in the gearbox.

Judging by the reviews of the owners, the optimal period for the first change of transmission oil in manual transmissions 2190 and 2181 is from 50 to 70 thousand kilometers.

Let's sum it up

As you can see, regularly checking the oil level in the Lada Granta box (both manual and automatic transmission) allows you to timely determine deviations from the norm in the event of leaks and other malfunctions.

Finally, we note that only timely replacement of the oil in the gearbox allows you to maximize the service life of the unit, as well as significantly improve the quality and efficiency of the transmission during vehicle operation.

Possible damage due to untimely replacement

The transmission performs 2 main functions: reduces friction of parts and protects them from overheating. If you do not check the oil level in the Lada Grants gearbox in a timely manner and do not replace it, the system may malfunction. Over time, the density of the liquid changes, and it protects metal surfaces less well. Gradually, metal particles accumulate in the oil and the friction of parts increases. This leads to their rapid wear and failure of the box. For the same reason, the working components of the gearbox overheat, which negatively affects their performance.

If there is not enough fluid in the box, the pump begins to supply partly oil and partly foam. This mixture has a negative effect on the condition of the parts. The most common signs of transmission fluid deficiency are:

  • poor gear shifting;
  • the car jerks when shifting to a higher gear;
  • jamming of the working mechanism;
  • uncharacteristic sounds - howling, buzzing, blows, etc.;
  • complete failure of the box.

Excess oil is no less harmful than its lack. Earlier car models do not have automatic drainage. As a result, the lubricant may foam and oxidize. This leads to rapid wear of the box parts.
