To ensure that the car does not fail on the road, it is necessary to monitor its technical condition: change working fluids and consumables in a timely manner. One of the regulated operations is replacing the alternator belt. The article provides detailed instructions and a video on how to change the Renault Logan alternator belt.

The purpose of the generator is to provide electrical energy to all vehicle systems. To do this, its rotor must constantly rotate. This is accomplished by a belt drive between the crankshaft and the generator. When the strap breaks, the car cannot move independently. Therefore, it is necessary to monitor the condition of the belt so that there are no unpleasant surprises on the road.

Depending on the vehicle configuration, there are three options for drive schemes for auxiliary units.

Here is a belt replacement option for a car with power steering and air conditioning. Belt replacement procedures for all options (including the one described) are posted on our Wikipedia (link)

When do you need to replace the Renault Logan accessory belt?

Since the accessory belt is subject to constant rotation and friction, over time, the need to replace it becomes inevitable. Slipping of a worn part causes the additional equipment to stop working as needed, and if a break occurs, it stops functioning completely.

Signs that replacement is needed are:

  • whistles or squeaks during operation of the unit;
  • decreased efficiency of additional equipment;
  • complete failure of the equipment driven by the belt.

Since the main function of the drive belt is to transmit torque through friction or engagement, it wears out over time, even if the car is used very carefully. Most often, car owners think about replacement after the first signs of a malfunction appear, but it is best if such a breakdown is identified in advance during a technical inspection.

If you hear an extraneous squeak or whistle under the hood, then under no circumstances put off visiting a car repair shop to find and fix the problem. If you visit our specialized car service center in advance, our technicians will diagnose and eliminate existing problems with the belt. We will check its tension and, if necessary, replace it with a new one.

Install the removed parts in reverse order. Before installing the belt, the tension roller bracket must be turned clockwise and locked (see above).

When installing the belt, place it on the pulleys and place it under the tension and support rollers in accordance with the drive diagram.

Attention! The drive pulleys for auxiliary units, generator, air conditioning compressor and power steering pump are six-ribbed, and the drive belt is five-ribbed.

Place the belt on the pulleys like this...

Replacing the accessory drive belt on Renault Logan 2

The vehicle is equipped with one accessory drive belt. It drives the generator, power steering pump and, depending on equipment, the air conditioning compressor. Optimal belt tension is ensured using an automatic tensioner with a roller.

All work related to checking and servicing the accessory drive belt should be carried out in accordance with the maintenance plan. In addition, the belt must be checked if signs of insufficient tension appear: a strong squeal when you sharply press the gas pedal or when you turn on powerful energy consumers and the air conditioner. To restore the normal operation of a belt that has gotten oil on it, you can try treating it with a special cleaner for drive belts. A heavily oiled belt should be replaced. A faulty tensioner should also be replaced.

The condition of the tension roller bearing can be assessed by the noise when the engine is running using a technical stethoscope. This operation is indicated when checking the technical condition of the engine. A worn bearing will produce increased noise.

After removing the accessory drive belt, you can check the condition of the roller by rotating it by hand. If the roller has play, makes a lot of noise, or jams when rotating, it must be replaced.

Checking the condition of the belt 1. Prepare the vehicle for work and place it on an inspection ditch or overpass. 2. Remove the right front wheel. 3. Remove the mudguard (see here)

5. Inspect the auxiliary drive belt on both sides.

To inspect the entire length of the belt, use an 18 mm socket wrench to turn the engine crankshaft.

6. Upon completion of the check, install the removed parts in the reverse order.

Replacing the belt The need to replace the belt is determined by checking its condition (see above). Removing the belt may be necessary when performing other repairs (for example, when replacing a generator). If the belt is in good condition and will be reused, before removing it, you should put a mark indicating the direction of rotation so that during assembly you can install the belt in this direction. a position in which he has already become accustomed.

1. We prepare the car for the work and install it on an inspection ditch or overpass. 2. Remove the right front wheel, and then the mudguard under the right front fender (see above). 3. Under the right front fender, place a 15 mm spanner on the tension roller mounting bolt (or on the hexagonal protrusion of the tensioner on an engine without air conditioning)…

...and by moving the tension roller in the direction of the arrow, we loosen the belt tension. Remove the belt from the crankshaft pulley.

4. Remove the accessory drive belt from the other pulleys and remove it from the engine compartment.

5. To replace the tension roller, unscrew the two bolts securing it (on an engine without an air conditioning compressor - one bolt) and remove the tension roller assembly with the bracket.

6. Install the auxiliary drive belt tensioner in the reverse order. 7. Place the belt on the auxiliary drive pulleys in accordance with the diagram shown in the figure.

...so that it is shifted to their outer edge 1, and the inner groove of the pulleys 2 remains free.

After installing the belt, slightly turn the tension roller with a key and remove the lock. Then, using a 18-inch socket with a ratchet, we turn the crankshaft clockwise three turns by the bolt securing its pulley to achieve the correct position of the belt.

Renault Logan: changing the auxiliary drive belt

Removing the alternator belt on Renault Logan

Replacing the alternator belt in the Renault Logan sedan is an important point because of the key function assigned to the belt. In this article we will talk about how to change such a thing in a car as an alternator belt.

Why do you need to change the Renault Logan belt?

The French automaker that produces Renault Logan has set a standard for replacing this unit (including brushes) at 60 thousand km due to their breakdowns after each such mileage; this is also typical for engines with 16 valves 1.4 and 1.6, respectively. But a real car enthusiast must have his own rules for frequency, which increase the service life, plus he needs to understand how to change the tension rollers in his car when the alternator belt is replaced.

After 15 thousand km on 16-valve engines, the belt tension force, as well as the efficiency of the entire mechanism as a whole, should be monitored. And in some cases, by this time the alternator belt needs to be replaced.

If the rubber part of the belt itself is without visible defects, and the pulley is in normal condition, you should not install a new component. Otherwise, you will have to install a new part or carry out repairs, if possible.

You should also take into account the Renault Logan equipment itself. A car may have a split system and a power steering system (power steering) at the same time, one or the other may be installed, or the model does not provide for the presence of these elements at all. A similar arrangement is installed on sedans with 1.6 liter and 1.4 liter engines (similar “packaging” and 16 valves).

What problems might there be?

  • A sign of a malfunction is an uncharacteristic whistle from the engine compartment (the belt is whistling). This suggests that most likely the pulley and belt have a strong deflection, therefore, using the tool, the belt tension is increased to eliminate whistling sounds. But if sound occurs due to a defective regulator or other problems, a new mechanism must be installed.
  • The most radical option to eliminate whistling is to install a new belt and pulley.
  • Whistling also occurs on parts with a broken regulator. If a whistle occurs and a malfunction of the regulator is determined, this unit is removed from its seat and installed.
  • Also, the cause of malfunctions is the malfunction of the bearing elements. They break for various reasons. The owner of a French Renault Logan 1.6-liter car with power steering, when installing a new component, should rely on the advice of the Renault automaker when purchasing a new part.

Renault prefers Bosch generators and belts in this matter. It is these components and assemblies that are mounted on the sedan.

Now you can find many alternatives, but for normal operation you should install Bosch components.

Replacing a belt with power steering and air conditioning on a Renault

How to properly replace the alternator belt with air conditioning? A similar arrangement of Renault Logan with power steering and a split system can be found on Renaults with a 1.6 engine, and less often with a 1.4 liter engine. More often, these configuration points are typical for 16-valve engine systems. We must not forget that when the alternator belt is changed, the tension rollers must also be changed. What are the number of floors for such events? All actions are performed on a cooled engine.

  • In the engine compartment, use a 13 key to loosen the screw securing the bearing rollers.
  • Then the bracket is screwed onto the housing part of the Renault Logan regulator generator.
  • Afterwards, the drive part and rings are removed from the functionality for working with the split system and power steering. At this step, the rollers are replaced, because these spare parts are replaced along with the belt.
  • Using a wrench, you should disassemble the roller assembly itself and the tension roller (for this, wrench No. 13 is used, as before).
  • When a new component is installed and the roller elements (belt, drive and rings) are replaced, the entire assembly is installed in reverse iteration. When installing, it is necessary to fix the new roller holder for better fastening of the entire structure; it must be tightened.
  • Afterwards, the structure (rings and drive) is mounted in reverse. The entire procedure is clearly discussed in the video.

A distinctive feature of a belt in this design is the presence of 5 grooves, while the pulleys for driving auxiliary devices have six. Thus, the alternator belt with air conditioning is replaced.

Replacing the belt on a Logan with power steering, but without air conditioning

To carry out a replacement on a power unit with power steering to 1.6 liters without a split system, no special tool is needed. It is necessary when installing a new generator. On 16-valve systems, such an arrangement is very rare. The repair process is carried out in several steps:

  • In the engine space of a Renault Logan 1.6 liter, you should strongly compress the alternator belt and check its tension, as well as determine the suitability of the bearings in the future. If necessary, apply tension. If there is excessive tension, you will have to loosen the screw fasteners.
  • The adjusting screw is loosened slightly rather than tightened to perform bearing and roller replacement to relieve excess stress.
  • Then all spare parts are replaced, and specifically: all new components are installed and assembly occurs in the reverse order, parts are tightened, as can be seen from the review, and the correct operation of the regulator is also diagnosed.
  • In order for the repair work to be carried out with high reliability, the Renault automaker suggests using a tester and a circuit for measuring network parameters. This will make it possible to more clearly determine the feasibility of installing a new belt, as well as evaluate the efficiency of the unit.

Model without power steering and climate system, how to replace the belt

Structurally, the mechanism on the Renault Logan model range in the absence of power steering is simpler. Therefore, repair actions, as well as direct operation, will not bring as much hassle to the owner as other configuration options. But on 16-valve 1.4 or 1.6 engines this option is practically absent.
