Ford Focus accessory drive belt

Ford Focus repair manual

So, when everything is prepared, you can start working.

It must be emphasized that the second generation Ford Focus is a modern car in which all elements and systems are interconnected.

Therefore, the replacement must be done very carefully.

It is necessary to install the belt carefully without fuss, because if it is even slightly damaged, then it will not be able to work fully and at some point will lead to a more severe breakdown.

Ford 2

Replacing the alternator belt is carried out as follows: We hang up the front axle of the Ford Focu s2 and place it on a strong support, after which we remove the wheel.

Unscrew the right front wheel ff 2

We dismantle the fender liner and protective cover by unscrewing the mounting bolts to the engine with a socket head.

Remove the mudguard and take out the fender liner

Remove the belt and cut it with a knife.

Removing generator drive belt

This is very important, since after its removal, re-installation is excluded, because its installation on the pulleys is possible only once, and it is impossible to adjust it.

Design nuances

The engines used on the Ford Focus 2 have their own specific design features. Thus, on 1.4- and 1.6-liter engines, the drive tension of auxiliary units is carried out by equipment pulleys, which affects the replacement technology.

Due to the absence of a tension roller, a new drive belt on such motors can only be put into place using special tools.

In 1.8 and 2.0 liter units, a tension roller is already used, which greatly simplifies the replacement work and does not require the use of specific tools.

The replacement process is also influenced by the presence of an air conditioner, since belt on the crankshaft pulley is placed in front of the generator drive element (this can be seen from the photo above), so it is impossible to install the latter without removing the first.

Option for changing the compressor drive belt

  • Without unscrewing the compressor, remove its pulley;
  • Using the “10” socket, unscrew and remove the pulley pressure plate;
  • Remove the pulley retaining ring, and then the pulley together with the belt;
  • We will put a new suspension belt on the HF and compressor pulleys;
  • We will select a pipe with a suitable diameter (so that the diameter is larger than the compressor shaft, but smaller than the hole in the pulley);
  • We pass the tube through the pulley and put it on the compressor shaft by approximately 5 mm and slightly press down, the pulley, under the influence of the belt resistance, jumps onto the shaft itself;
  • Putting everything back together.

On the top of the engine, in order to change the alternator belt, unscrew the 2 tensioner bolts and leave it on the pin, move it to the right side of the car, and remove the belt!

Assembly in reverse order. Thus, it will take about an hour to change the FF2 suspension straps without any problems.

Replacing the drive on 1.8 and 2.0 l engines

On 1.8 and 2.0 liter power plants, the replacement technology is significantly different and simpler, thanks to the use of a tension roller in the design.

The situation with belt drives for 1.8 and 2.0 liter engines is the same as for their “smaller brothers” - there are both original consumables (kit catalog number - 1708274) and analog ones produced by the above-mentioned manufacturers.

Additionally, to carry out the work you will need a new tension roller - original (indexes 534024910 for pre-restyling models and 1465253 - restyled versions) or an analogue.

Thanks to the tensioner, the technology for replacing the alternator belt is very simple and does not require the use of additional devices.

The work algorithm is as follows:

  • We cut off the worn drive;
  • Replace the tension roller;
  • We put the belt on - we put it on the crankshaft pulley, we put it around the pump pulley, we put it on the generator pulley, we pull it to the roller (it is important to follow the specified sequence);
  • We put a head with a knob on the roller bolt (putting them under the belt) and moving towards the engine we move the roller, which will allow you to put the belt on it. Let's release the video.

After installing the new drive, be sure to check that it is seated correctly - it should not be shifted to the sides or extend beyond the sides of the pulleys.

Part Selection Options

Before you remove, change and put on a new strap, you need to select it. The length and size of the drive belt in a Ford Focus can range from 705 to 975 mm, the number of ribs will also vary depending on the version and year of manufacture of the car. For detailed information about this, check the service book. For Ford Focus 2 gasoline cars with air conditioning, the engine volume of which is 1.4-1.6 liters, you can use manufacturer’s belts:

  • Unique Ford strap;
  • Kontitek product made in Germany;
  • Daiko strap (Italy);
  • One of the tested options is Bosch belt

In cars with the same engines without air conditioning, you can use the following belts:

  • Unusual Ford production;
  • Also products from manufacturers Kontitek and Gates.

For the pre-restyling version of Focus 2 with a volume of 1.8-2 liters, a salon strap is used:

  • Ford;
  • Kontitek;
  • And Daiko.

In a converted version of a car with a similar engine size, the same products can be used, including belts from the manufacturer Gates. All of the manufacturers listed above can also be used in diesel cars.

In what cases does the belt need to be replaced?

Let's talk about how to install, tension and adjust the alternator belt on a Ford Focus 2 restyling, 100, 105, 115, 125 hp. First, let's look at the cases in which the strap needs to be replaced. In accordance with the technical information indicated in the service manual, the car owner must replace the drive belt at least every 60 thousand kilometers. But the service life of the belt may be lower, everything depends on its properties.

The need for replacement may arise if damage occurs to the strap structure. If it breaks, the battery will discharge much faster, since the car's electrical network will be powered by the battery, and the battery charge will not be replenished due to a broken strap. Since Ford Focuses use a belt for the alternator and hydraulic booster, the power steering will not be able to work, which can be determined by the tight turn of the steering wheel.

The need to replace the belt can be determined by the appearance of a whistle, which will appear when starting the engine and during its operation, when electrical equipment is activated. The occurrence of problems in the operation of the generator unit is accompanied by the lighting of a new indicator on the car’s dashboard in the form of a battery.

If you decide to remove and install the generator and air conditioner drive belt, as well as the tensioner pulley, then you can find out about its wear by the following symptoms:

  • Cracks have formed on the surface of the belt;
  • The strap became stretched, not elastic as before;
  • The belt structure shows damage and tears;
  • Damage also appeared on the inner teeth;
  • Layering of the structure.

How to replace the alternator belt on a Ford Focus 2

The use of a generator on a Ford Focus 2 is mandatory, since it is the main source of electricity. When the car starts, the starter starts working and consumes a large amount of energy from the battery, which leads to a significant drop in its charge. In such a situation, all devices operate solely at the expense of the battery, but after starting the engine, the generator begins to function. One of the most common breakdowns of the Ford Focus 2 is a breakdown of the alternator belt. In this case, its replacement will be mandatory. Today we will talk about how to change the belt, in what cases and what needs to be done for this.

According to the manufacturer's recommendations, the alternator belt should be replaced every 50,000-60,000 km, or 5 years of operation, whichever occurs first. It is the belt that ensures normal operation of the engine and allows all equipment to be powered with electricity. The main task of the belt on the Ford Focus2 is to transmit force from the crankshaft to the generator shaft. Its condition and tension are extremely important and affect the following:

  • Service life of drive bearings.
  • Service life and integrity of the part.
  • Level and speed of wear of crankshaft bearings.

It should be noted that if the belt tension on a Ford Focus 2 is excessive, then its bearings receive excessive load and may fail prematurely. If the tension is too weak, this will cause the device to slip on the shaft, which leads to a negative impact on the battery, which is not recharged from the generator as necessary.

Replacement requires a certain set of tools, including a knife, a 15mm wrench, TORX-T30 and TORX-E15.

Below is a detailed summary that will help you find out how to change and how to tighten the strap:

Replacement steps

To correctly remove, install and tension the drive belt of the generator set and the air conditioner, you need to proceed according to the following scheme:

Why do you need to change your belt on time?

The alternator belt in Ford Focus 100, 105, 115, 125 restyling and pre-restyling cars, according to official data noted in the technical book, should be changed every 60 thousand kilometers. If the timing of replacement intervals is violated, the belt may break, which will cause inconvenience to the car owner. The service life of the strap may be shorter, everything is justified by the criteria of use, correct installation and the quality of the part itself.

The need to change the product can be recognized by the presence of flaws and other damage on the structure itself. If the alternator belt breaks, all equipment will be powered directly from the battery. When functioning correctly, electrical appliances receive voltage from the generator set, which also restores the battery charge lost to starting the engine. If the strap breaks, the battery will not be able to renew its capacity, which will lead to its high level and the impossibility of driving the car.

Also, the installed drive belt is used to ensure the correct operation of the Ford Focus hydraulic power steering. If a break occurs, the power steering will turn off, and the driver will have to make efforts to turn the steering wheel.

Signs of an imminent replacement

A whistling sound may indicate that the strap will soon fail. In wet weather, the whistle occurs when starting the car engine and disappears over time. If the belt is worn out, it will whistle continuously, especially when turning on electrical appliances and other equipment, such as optics. In some cases, a battery light appears on the control panel of a car. This may be due to both problems with the operation of the battery and defects in the generator device.

Other “symptoms” of product wear:

  • The appearance of cracks on the outside of the strap;
  • The product has stretched too much, it has lost its elasticity;
  • The appearance of tears in the structure of the strap;
  • Formation of damage on the inside;
  • The structure of the belt began to delaminate.

Replacement steps

To properly remove, install and tension the drive belt of the generator set and air conditioner, you must proceed according to the following scheme:

  1. Replacing the Ford Focus alternator belt is performed by dismantling the product. To do this, remove the key from the car's ignition and open the hood. Unscrew the screws securing the terminals connected to the battery, and then remove them.
  2. Loosen the screws that secure the front right wheel. Place this part of the car on a jack. Unscrew the screws completely and remove the wheel.
  3. After removing the wheel, you can remove the fender liner. Disconnect and move the mudguard aside. Once you have access to the generator belt, remove it. To do this, use a previously prepared knife. After cutting and dismantling the belt, clean the shaft surface.
  4. Visually assess the condition of the installed rollers. If there are defects, parts must be replaced.
  5. Now you need to install a new belt and tighten it. The strap should be positioned centrally between the hydraulic power steering pump and the crankshaft. You will see the pump wheel; a tool for installing the part is mounted on it. Once the tool is installed, it should be turned counterclockwise.
  6. You need to put the belt on the drive pulley. It is mounted in such a way that the number located on the surface is directed towards the machine motor. The belt is installed on the shafts of the hydraulic booster, air conditioning system and generator unit.
  7. The product is tensioned. Use a 19 key to turn the water pump pulley. The procedure is performed carefully. While the pulley is spinning, the belt is tensioned. Scrolling is carried out until the belt stretches and sits fully on the pulley. Take an 18mm wrench and use it to turn the crankshaft a few turns. As a result, you can check the correct installation of the part.
  8. To tighten the belt on the compressor drive of the Conder, place the installation tool on the pulleys of the auxiliary devices. Installation is carried out in such a way that the tool is located between the axes of the pulley. The device is placed on the device and installed on the compressor shaft.
  9. The crankshaft turns again. This is done until the product is completely seated on all the shafts. If you manage to do this, then the installation device is removed and the crankshaft is rotated 2-3 turns. Check whether all steps have been performed correctly and evaluate the quality of the product tension. If the tension is insufficient or too strong, the strap may wear out quickly. After installation, make sure that the grooves of the product are correctly installed in the notches on the shaft. Otherwise, the strap may become distorted when starting the engine, which will also lead to wear and breakage.
  10. Reassemble everything in reverse order. Reinstall the wheel arch liner and wheel and tighten the bolts securely. Start the engine and check that the belt is working correctly. At first, it may make noise that is uncharacteristic of its operation. Subsequently, the sounds will disappear when the belt gets used. You can use a special softening agent, sold at any automotive chemical store. It helps get rid of extraneous sounds.

Part Selection Options

When selecting a strap, you need to take into account that the product you purchase must match the length and size of the worn part. Ford Focus uses straps whose size ranges from 705 to 975 mm. Here you need to rely on the year of manufacture of the vehicle, its version and model. You can find out exactly what kind of belt is used in your car from the technical department. Focus 2 models equipped with a 1.4-1.6 liter gasoline engine and an air conditioning system can use products: unusual Ford production, German Kontitek belts, Italian Daiko or Bosch. The latter manufacturer is considered the most popular among consumers.

If cars with the same engine do not have an air conditioning system, it is better to use straps of unusual manufacture, also from Gate and Kontitek manufacturers. Daiko, Kontitek and unique parts are allowed for use in Focus 2 models equipped with 1.8 or 2 liter units. Such belts can be installed in converted vehicles. Also, products from the listed manufacturers are allowed for use in cars equipped with diesel engines.
