What properties does a good oil have?

  • Cleans . The lubricant dissolves deposits and keeps them suspended, preventing them from settling on engine parts. During maintenance, dirt is removed along with the oil.
  • Lubricates . The liquid forms a strong anti-friction film on rubbing surfaces. Motor wear is reduced and its service life is increased.
  • Protects . High-quality oil prevents corrosion of metal parts.
  • Cools . The lubricant removes excess heat, prevents engine overheating, and reduces the rate of oxidation processes.

Hyundai Solaris oil for engines 1.4, 1.6, how much and what kind is required?

Hyundai Solaris is a compact B-class car designed for developing countries, as well as the European market. It is a localized version of the Hyundai Accent, which is adapted for Russian road conditions. The car has been produced since 2011 in four-door sedan and five-door hatchback bodies. The closest competitors are Skoda Rapid, Renault Logan, Lada Vesta, Ford Fiesta, Kia Rio and Volkswagen Polo Sedan. According to official data, the 2011 Hyundai Solaris has not passed Euro NCAP crash tests, but has passed two independent tests. So, first the car was crashed by specialists from the Autoreview magazine, and then another crash test was carried out at the request of Hyundai. Based on the test results, the car received a rating that is equivalent to four stars out of four possible.

In 2014, restyling took place, as a result of which Hyundai Solaris received an updated design and additional equipment. A six-speed automatic and a 6-speed manual appeared, which replaced the 5-speed manual and 4-speed automatic transmission. Solaris was in high demand in almost all regions of Russia, as well as in the post-Soviet space. The second generation Hyundai Solaris has been on sale since 2021. The new car has become more expensive and has lost its “budget” features.

How much oil is needed for Hyundai Solaris

Let's consider the required volume of oil for Hyundai Solaris engines, recommended by the factory.

Generation 1 (2011-2017)

  • For engine 1.4 107 l. With. (gasoline, manual/automatic, model year – 2011-2017) required oil volume – 3.3 liters.
  • For engine 1.6 123 l. With. (gasoline, manual/automatic, model year – 2011-2017) required oil volume 3.3 liters.

Generation 2 (since 2017)

  • For engine 1.4 100 l. With. (gasoline, manual/automatic, model year - since 2017) required oil volume - 3.6 liters.
  • For engine 1.6 123 l. With. (gasoline, manual, automatic, model year - since 2017) required oil volume - 3.3 liters.

What oil does Hyundai recommend for Solaris?

The following is a list of engines and suitable engine oil characteristics for these engines.

Generation 1 (2011-2017)

  • SAE classification for 1.4 107 hp engine. With. (gasoline, manual/automatic, model year – 2011-2017) – 5W-30, 5W-40.
  • SAE classification for 1.6 123 hp engine. With. (gasoline, manual/automatic, model year – 2011-2017) – 5W-30, 10W-30.

Generation 2 (since 2017)

  • SAE classification for 1.4 100 hp engine. With. (gasoline, manual/automatic, year of manufacture – since 2017) – 5W-20, 5W-30.

What to choose: 5W-20 or 5W-30

The question of what kind of oil to pour into the Solaris engine has remained relevant since the car entered the Russian market. Many car owners and service center technicians recommend 5W-20 materials. But it is best to focus on the engine oil tolerances for Solaris specified in the instruction manual for different temperatures.

Temperature conditions of car operation Oil viscosity grade
-30…+50 °С 0W-20, 0W-30, 5W-20, 5W-30
-15…+50 °C 10W-30
-10…+50 °C 15W-40
-5…+50 °C 20W-50

It is clear from the table that the choice is not limited to one viscosity class. For Russia, 5W-20 and 5W-30 oils are equally suitable. Number 5 is low temperature viscosity. The lower it is, the better the engine performs in cold weather. The second number is high temperature viscosity, or the ability of the oil to form a strong lubricating film when heated. It turns out that the 5W-30 brand better retains its performance in hot climates, with aggressive driving style, and intensive use of the car. 5W-20 oil is well suited for short trips, long idling, and smooth highway driving at low speeds.

1.4 L engines are more sensitive to high temperature viscosity than 1.6 L versions. The reason is the shift of the torque curve towards high speeds. Under equal conditions, the 1.4 liter engine heats up more than the 1.6 liter one.

What kind of oil to fill in the Hyundai Solaris engine?

When we ask ourselves what kind of oil to pour into a Hyundai Solaris engine, we want to get an answer that is as reasonable and clear as possible. We are also interested in such points as:

  1. Official oil approval;
  2. Required volume
  3. Service interval
  4. Possibility of changing the oil in Hyundai Solaris yourself

In this article we will tell you about all this.

The last restyled version of the Hyundai Solaris was produced in 2014 and has not changed since then. This model is assembled at a plant located in St. Petersburg. The original Hyundai Solaris oil from the assembly line is Shell Helix ultra 5W20 synthetic. It is this oil that the automaker uses to refuel all diesel engines of this model, regardless of volume.

The official approvals for motors are:

  • API class standard is SM, ILSAC class standard is GF-4 or higher.

The approval sheet for Solaris (from the instruction manual) looks like this:

To summarize: In order not to have problems with the engine and the operation of the car, in general, it is enough to buy oil that has the appropriate above-mentioned tolerances and select oil with a viscosity that matches the climatic conditions of the place where the car is used!

Leaks and problems

The longer the mileage of the Hyundai Solaris, the more problems appear, as in principle in any car. Some motorists are beginning to complain about increased oil consumption. Others continue to use the car, citing the fact that it is normal to burn 1-2 liters from replacement to replacement.

The most common place where a leak appears is the joint between the engine and gearbox. The culprit is most likely the plug of the engine block, but without removing the gearbox, the problem cannot be solved. The problem is quite widespread; the manufacturer recognizes the problem and fixes everything under warranty.

Also, this problem may have other causes, such as a leaking crankshaft oil seal or a leaking input shaft oil seal. But these cases are much less common and are not widespread.

When changing the oil, it would be a good idea to inspect all components for leaks, so that if a leak is detected, take measures to eliminate it.
There are several generations of Solaris, they do not have any fundamental changes in the lubrication system, so the replacement instructions will be applicable to all:

  • Hyundai Solaris 1 (Hyundai Solaris I RBr, Restyling);
  • Hyundai Solaris 2 (Hyundai Solaris II HCr).

Gasoline engines of 1.6 and 1.4 liters were installed on Solaris. The volume of oil poured into them is approximately 3.3 liters.

According to the manufacturer's regulations, engine oil service changes are carried out after 15,000 kilometers or at intervals of 1 year. But many motorists consider this interval to be very high, recommending that it be halved.

According to the recommendation of the automobile concern, the original Hyundai Premium LF 5W-20 synthetic oil should be used to fill the lubrication system. The use of semi-synthetic Hyundai Super Extra 5W-30 is allowed.

From the factory, Hyundai Solaris models are filled with the synthetic compound Shell Helix Ultra 5W-20. But on the Internet you can often find reviews from people that they have filled in oil with other viscosity parameters, for example 5W40. Most likely this is due to the operation of the car in different climatic zones, as well as at different dealers.

If you try to figure out which analogue oil to pour into these engines, you may encounter confusion in official documents. In the service instructions, the manufacturer recommends that when choosing, rely on API data: SM; ILSAC: GF-4.

Although dealers at their repair stations for some reason recommend choosing a lubricant based on API tolerances: SL; ACEA: A3. Although ACEA approval: A3 is not very suitable for Gamma motors, as it will be too viscous. According to the recommendations of motorists, ACEA: A5 would be more suitable.

Everyone has their own preferences regarding the brands of oil manufacturers. Some use Korean ones, others look for cheaper ones and use Lukoil. But most trust global brands such as Elf, Shell or Liqui Molly.

To summarize the above, engine oil should be selected that meets API tolerances: SM; ILSAC: GF-4. If it is impossible to buy a lubricant with these tolerances, you can opt for ACEA: A5.

  1. Automaker recommendations. You should start looking for a lubricant by reading the car manual. In it, the Korean manufacturer clearly indicated that preference should be given to a product with the SAE 5W-20 classification (API SM/ILSAC GF-4). It is not always possible to find oil with the specified parameters in stores; deviations are allowed only for the operating temperature limit (5W-30, 10W-40).
  2. Factory oil. Hyundai Solaris cars are assembled in different countries around the world. Each plant uses its own motor oil. The assembly line of the Russian branch in St. Petersburg uses SHELL Helix Ultra synthetics with a temperature limit of 5W-20.
  3. Oil base. Experts recommend using synthetic or semi-synthetic oil in Hyundai Solaris engines. The choice depends on the characteristics of operation, the age of the car and the climatic conditions of the region.
  4. When servicing a new car with a mileage of up to 100-150 thousand km, synthetics are definitely required. Only it maintains stable viscosity in both heat and cold, reaching the surfaces of all parts. When the car has covered more than 100 thousand km, you can switch to high-quality semi-synthetics.
  5. Motorists use Hyundai Solaris in different ways. Residents of large cities put a maximum load on their car's engine by driving on busy streets and sitting in traffic jams. Even synthetic oil has to be changed before the recommended 15 thousand km. But provincial motorists can comfortably use semi-synthetics if most of their journey is on country roads.
  6. The choice of oil is also determined by the region of residence. In the northern latitudes in winter you cannot do without synthetics. In the middle zone and in the south, it is possible to survive mild winters by filling the engine with semi-synthetics.

  • 4 G4EE 2006 – 2010 – 3.3 l;
  • 4 G4FA 2014 – 2021 goal – 3 l;
  • 5 D4FA 2006 – 2009 – 5.3 l;
  • 5 G4FK 1999 – 2002 – 3 l;
  • 6 G4ED 2003 – 2010 – 3.3 l;
  • 6 G4FC 2014 – 2021 – 3 l.

The lubrication system of the restyled Hyundai Solaris G4FA 1.4 and G4FC 1.6 engines contain the same amount of engine oil. The only difference is in consumption, because the 1.6 engine consumes 0.2 liters more oil.

Change of oil. How much to fill

The simplest job, however, if you replace it yourself, unexpected problems may arise. But first things first. We carry out the work on a warm or heated engine.

Unscrew the oil filler cap

If there is a metal engine protection that does not have a cutout for the oil filter, then it will have to be removed. This is where the first catch can happen with the rear mortgages, which turn when the bolt is unscrewed.

Often when changing the oil, you have to deal with the problem of the rear bolt.

Usually in such a situation it is enough to insert a powerful screwdriver between the protection and the beam. Using a screwdriver, we press the protection down, thereby acting on the bolt, which will press the mortgage itself to the beam. When the force is created, we begin to unscrew the bolt.

You can order a new set of fasteners using the article number in the photo. The first number is hard to see - it’s 4. It’s better to always have a reserve of it, because everyone handles mortgages. It is the matter of time.

Before unscrewing the drain bolt, prepare a container for old oil and be sure to check how the key fits on the edges of the bolt. It should fit snugly without play. Try not to use an open-end wrench - it can easily lick off the edges.

Unscrew the oil pan drain bolt with a 17 wrench

Pay attention to the location of the drain plug. For some reason it is located not at the lowest point of the pallet, but higher. Because of this, quite a lot of old oil remains in the pan. Why this was done is not clear.

How to remove old oil and how much of it remains is shown in the video.

The numbers for the drain bolt and o-ring will come in handy sooner or later. The ring under the same article can be aluminum or copper. Recently, mainly aluminum ones have been supplied.

O-ring 2151323001 and oil drain bolt 2151223000

The drain bolt is tightened with a force of 20-25 Nm, which is 4-5 in kg.

Now unscrew the oil filter. How to do this and much more is discussed in a separate article at the oil filter link.

Unscrew the oil filter

All that remains is to fill in new oil. The 1.4 and 1.6 engines have the same volume. According to the manual, the engine contains 3.3 liters, in fact it contains from 3 liters to 3.25 liters, depending on whether the remaining old oil was pumped out from the sump or not and on the volume of the new oil filter.

First fill in 3 liters, and then you can top up to the desired level.

The difference between the lower and upper mark is 0.5 l

The oil level should be between the lower and upper marks. You should not pour to the very top, because cold oil expands as it warms up and the level will be above the top mark.

Fill just below the top mark

Engine oil for Hyundai Solaris 1.6 - what kind?

To understand which oil is best for the Hyundai Solaris 1.6, you must first evaluate the temperature range in which this engine operates. This is a budget city car that is not particularly powerful, so synthetic oil with a viscosity of 5W20 will be quite sufficient for its engine.

Hyundai manufacturers fill their engines with Shell Helix Ultra 5W30 oil from the factory. This type of motor oil can be seen in absolutely all internal combustion engines of this automaker, regardless of the size of the power unit. This is the most suitable oil for Hyundai Solaris 1.6.

If for some reason this option does not suit you, then here is a list of motor oils recommended for the Hyundai Solaris 1.6 engine:

  • Liqui Moly special tec (OW20, 5W20, 5W30);
  • Liqui Moly molygen 5W30;
  • Mobil 1 (5W30, OW20);
  • Castrol (5W30 AP, 5W30 A1, 5W30 A5);
  • Zic A+ (5W20), Zic X9 (5W30), Zic X7 (5W40).

Also take into account climatic conditions. At low temperatures (winter), use less viscous oils - 5W20. In summer with increased viscosity - 5W30 or 5W40, depending on the intensity of vehicle use.

The best motor oil. does it exist?

  • rotation of the connecting rod bearings, caused by accumulated waste oil. Old fluid worsens the functioning of mechanisms that require constant lubrication, which is absent in this case. This leads to the effect of dry friction of parts interacting with each other, which is why increased noise and vibration, knocking and a drop in engine power cannot be avoided. Under heavy loads, the temperature reaches a critical level, which leads to excessive overheating and, as a consequence, cranking of the connecting rod bearings.
  • Inadequate quality of lubricant can be one of the reasons for a decrease in viscosity level and rupture of the so-called oil film between the cylinder and the piston. Due to the loss of its beneficial properties, the used liquid is no longer able to prevent the appearance of soot and acidic compounds formed during the combustion process.
  • Component wear cannot be avoided, as used oil is one of the problems leading to increased temperatures, which risks melting interacting components.
  • Bend or destruction of the valve can also become one of the problems as a result of untimely oil changes in the Hyundai Solaris engine. In the worst case, a gas leak may occur in the combustion chamber.
  • If fuel gets into the oil, it destroys all the oil's additives. The fact is that traveling short distances negatively affects the quality of the oil, which in this case does not have time to warm up to the required temperature. As a result, there is a risk of fuel getting into the oil. In other words, a reduction in oil life is possible not only during long-term operation, but also during short trips.

What is the replacement interval?

Car owners constantly argue about how often a Hyundai Solaris oil change is necessary. According to the manufacturer's recommendations, the engine oil is changed

  1. every 15 thousand km;
  2. 1 time per year.

It all depends on which time comes sooner. But it is also worth considering the fact that under increased operating conditions the engine consumes almost 1 liter of oil per 1500 km. Therefore, in some cases, replacement will be necessary after 7-8 thousand kilometers traveled.

Volume of oils and fluids Hyundai Solaris

The car requires the attention of the owner, if you are an owner who does not particularly care for his car, then you still have to do it. Of course, not all parts need to be changed and all that, but the filling fluids in cars definitely need to be changed! If you don't believe us, then ask a good auto mechanic. And so closer to the point, the Hyundai Solaris car is no different (in particular) from other cars. And so on this page we will look at how much and what kind of liquid you need to pour into your car.

How to check the oil level

Fluid monitoring is carried out on a warm engine. Stop the engine and wait a few minutes for the remaining oil to drain into the crankcase. The car must be parked on a flat, horizontal surface.

When the engine has cooled down a little, remove the dipstick located in the engine compartment. Wipe the pointer with a clean rag and insert it back into the tank. Remove the dipstick again - there will be an oil level mark on it. Normally, it is located between the MIN and MAX risks. If the mark is below MIN, the oil needs to be added.
