Types of motor oil

Change the oil on a carburetor VAZ 21099 every 10,000 km or once a year, and also of course, at the same time as changing the oil, the oil filter is also changed. Modern motor oils have fairly high cleaning properties and additional flushing is not always required.

For motors of the Samara 1 family, when using lubricants of SG class and higher, with a mileage of 50 thousand km, flushing is not required. For higher mileage, it is enough to wash it every 30 thousand km. If semi-synthetic oil was used for replacement, then flushing is not necessary at all!

In accordance with the instructions, you need to pour 3.5 liters of engine oil into a VAZ 21099 car.

The manufacturer recommends changing the oil in VAZ 2109 engines after 1–2 years of operation or every 10,000–15,000 km, depending on which indicator is achieved first. These recommendations are general in nature. Therefore, it is quite acceptable to adjust the replacement timing, taking into account certain conditions of the practical use of the car.

If the oil turns black or loses its viscosity-elastic properties, then, regardless of the filling time and mileage, the lubricant will have to be changed. This must be done in order to maintain proper engine power and significantly extend the life of its quality operation.

There are several different types of lubricants for car engines, which we will now briefly review to make it easier for you to make the right choice.

Mineral

Traditionally, such oils are made on a mineral basis, but they are not well suited for VAZ 2109 engines. The fact is that they do not meet the requirements for oil changes and do not meet the strict operational characteristics of power units.

Semi-synthetics

Such oils for the VAZ 2109 are also made on a mineral basis, but some synthetic components are added to them to improve the characteristics of lubricants during cold engine starts. Semi-synthetic oils keep the internal surfaces of the engine clean and reliably protect it from wear.

If the oil filler neck is closed, unscrew the cap by turning it counterclockwise about half a turn. Pour the required amount of oil into the VAZ 2109 engine. Do this slowly, as the oil is quite viscous and slowly flows down the walls.

Using a dipstick, check the oil level in the engine - it should not be below the minimum mark. If the level is lower, add a little oil. Start the engine and leave it running for a few minutes until the pressure warning light goes out. Check the lubricant level again - if it is normal, you can actively operate your VAZ 2109.

Replacement steps

The algorithm of actions that I propose has already been tested and is the best option. It consists of the following steps:

1. At the first stage, we drive the car into an inspection hole or overpass, as in my case.
2. Allow the engine to cool so that the oil drains into the engine sump. And later, when you open the drain plug, all the oil drains out. Be careful, draining hot oil can cause severe burns.
3. After the engine has cooled, unscrew the oil filter, which is located on the side of the crankcase. It should unscrew without much effort, but there are times when it is difficult to unscrew. For such cases, there is one correct option. Take a long screwdriver and pierce the filter right through. (Be careful not to let any remaining oil in the filter leak onto you). We get a lever with which it will be more convenient to unscrew the filter.
4. After unscrewing the filter, we proceed directly to draining the oil. To do this, remove the filler cap on the engine. Then unscrew the drain plug on the pan. To do this, we need a 13mm wrench. Take care in advance of the container into which the used oil will be drained. Wait 7-10 minutes until the oil is completely drained.
5. After the oil has completely drained, you need to tighten the drain plug. When tightening the plug, do not overdo it with force (you can break the thread).
6. The next step is to install a new oil filter. Before installation, lightly lubricate the filter gasket with used oil. Screw in the new filter until it stops and then tighten it, but not too much.
7. After installing the filter, pour new oil into the filler neck. A VAZ 21099 car is usually filled with 3-3.5 liters. But it’s worth buying a 4-liter canister for possible topping up during operation. Fill the oil in parts, checking the oil level with a dipstick. The oil level should be slightly above the halfway point between the minimum and maximum values.
8. After you have filled in the oil and checked its level, you need to tighten the filler plug.
9. Next, we need to start the engine and look at the pan and filter for leaks. Please note that when starting the engine, the oil pressure indicator will light for 2-3 seconds, after which it should go out.

If there are no leaks and the light on the instrument panel goes out, then the oil change job can be considered complete. After changing the oil in my car, the engine began to run much better and quieter.

When to change?

The car manufacturer provides replacement regulations. According to the official document, the oil should be changed once or twice a year or every 10-15 thousand kilometers. From time to time the oil is checked, its condition and color. If it is unsatisfactory, it must also be replaced.

Additional signs that replacement is needed:

• Year of manufacture of the power unit;
• Vehicle mileage;
• Vehicle operation style;
• Seasons in which the vehicle is operated;
• Fuel quality;
• Engine loads (long idling, slipping and towing).

The color of the oil fluid is black, and the viscous and elastic parameters are lost? In such a situation, the liquid changes regardless of timing. This is done to maintain power and extend engine life.

After draining the oil from the VAZ 2109, you need to screw the bolt into the drain hole and unscrew the oil filter. If you don’t have a special wrench and you can’t unscrew the filter by hand, use a regular screwdriver: pierce the filter crosswise with it and use it as a lever to unscrew it.

Next, lubricate the gasket and threads of the new filter with oil and carefully install it so as not to strip the threads. When tightening it, do not use a wrench, but do everything by hand. It is also recommended to fill the new filter with oil about halfway to prevent oil starvation in the first moments of engine operation after starting.

There are three main types of motor oil for car engines:

• Mineral. It has high viscosity, most often requires replacement, and the price is the lowest. It is advisable to change this type of fluid after 4,000 kilometers.
• Semi-synthetic. It has a lower viscosity, in cold weather the engine can be quickly warmed up, and protects parts from mechanical damage. It is recommended to change the oil in the VAZ 2109 engine after 6,000 kilometers.
• Synthetic. The most modern, expensive, with good protective properties of device elements from wear and mechanical damage. It can be replaced after more than 8,000 kilometers.

Fill the engine with only high-quality oil. Run-in should be carried out strictly according to the manufacturer’s recommendations.

What increases the durability of motor oil

So:

• If the car is purchased from another owner, it is better to change the oil. Changing the engine oil on a VAZ 2109 is carried out after flushing the engine with a special solution or the oil that will then be filled. New oil filter being installed

Oil change methods

What oil is needed for VAZ 21099

• Container for used oil;
• Workwear;
• Fresh lubricant;
• Flushing fluid (if necessary).

The volume of engine oil according to the operating instructions is 3.5 liters. In practice, it only holds 3 liters. It is recommended to pour semi-synthetic or synthetic from popular brands (Castrol, Shell). It is possible to use domestic analogues that have an affordable price.

To properly drain the oil, the engine must be warmed up before replacing.

Changing the oil on a VAZ 2109 carburetor and injector

Replacing the oil fluid on a VAZ 2109 carburetor and injector does not require special knowledge from the car owner. The oil change procedure is similar for both the carburetor and the injector:

1. Warm up the engine. Hot oil is less viscous. This allows it to drain into the container more quickly and efficiently.
2. Place the vehicle on a level surface and apply the handbrake.
3. Remove the engine protection (if present).
4. Place a container for used oil fluid under the engine crankcase and unscrew the drain plug with a 17 mm wrench.
5. Wait 10-15 minutes. The oil will be poured into the prepared container.
6. While the lubricant is draining, remove the oil filter to replace it. A special wrench or screwdriver is used. A new filter element is installed.
7. Is the oil completely glassy? Screw the drain plug back into place.
8. Pour some motor oil into the new filter. Wipe the sealing rubber with a rag. Reinstall the filter. It is twisted by hand.
9. Pour engine oil through the filler neck. It is located on the engine. Pour carefully, slowly.
10. Pour in about 3 liters of liquid. Wait until it spreads through the internal mechanisms.
11. Slowly add another half liter of motor oil. At the same time, monitor the oil level through the dipstick. If the system has not been flushed, then, as a rule, less than 3.5 liters of oil will enter the engine.
12. Screw on the cap and start the internal combustion engine in neutral gear. Wait 5 minutes. During this time, all channels and the oil filter are filled with liquid.
13. Turn off the power unit. Recheck the oil level. If necessary, top up.
14. Check the system. There should be no leaks or other traces of oil.

Changing the oil in the VAZ 2108 engine

Changing the oil in a VAZ 2108 engine is no different from changing the oil in a VAZ 2109. These cars are equipped with the same carburetor and injection engines. Therefore, the replacement process is similar to that described above.

The choice of oil in the VAZ 2108 should be left to domestic manufacturers. Good quality, affordable price and operating time are the basis for choice. Recommended viscosity 5W-40, 10W-40, 15W-40.

The replacement oil for the VAZ 21099 engine must meet the international API quality standard: SG, SH, SJ. It also needs to be selected depending on the climatic conditions of the vehicle’s operation, taking into account the temperature range:

• from -30 to 20 °C 5W-30;
• from -25 to 30 °C 10W-30;
• from -20 to 35 °C 10W-40;
• from -20 to 35 °C 15W-30;
• from -20 to 45 °C 15W-40;
• from -15 to 35 °C 20W-30;
• from -15 to 45 °C 20W-40;
• from -5 to 45 °C 30.

• Mineral oil has the lowest price, but its service life is short due to its high viscosity, approximately 4,000 kilometers of car mileage.
• Semi-synthetic oil protects engine components well from mechanical damage; it is better to change it after 6,000 kilometers.
• The most expensive synthetic oil. Its replacement interval is more than 8,000 kilometers.

Advice: Changing the engine oil in a VAZ 21093 without flushing the latter can only be done with a similar one.

How to change engine oil

Do-it-yourself work begins with purchasing high-quality oil, a filter for cleaning it, air and fuel filters, a puller for removing the oil filter, a screwdriver, and a wrench for unscrewing the drain plug. • The car is installed on an inspection hole or overpass. You can jack up the front of the car on a level surface, placing reliable supports under the rear wheels.
• To drain the oil, place a container of approximately four liters under the engine.

Tip: Removing the cap from the oil filler neck helps improve fluid drainage.

Tip: Before installing the filter, it is advisable to fill it halfway with oil. This will prevent the creation of an air lock.

• With the oil filler cap closed, the latter is removed. In this case, it must be turned ninety degrees counterclockwise.
• New engine oil is slowly added.
• The dipstick checks its level in the engine, which must not be lower than the minimum mark.
• The engine starts. It runs for several minutes until the oil pressure light comes on. After approximately ten minutes, the level is checked again. If necessary, add oil.

I hope you will adhere to the recommendations that are proposed and then the oil will perform its functions 100%.

The oil change in the VAZ 21093 gearbox is performed after 75,000 vehicle miles, or five years of operation. To prevent oil leakage, its level should not be higher than the upper mark on the dipstick. The minimum level should not be allowed to be less than the lower mark, otherwise insufficient lubrication of the gearbox gears will lead to rapid wear of the parts. So:

• The rubber cap on the gearbox is removed. The hole in the breather is cleaned with a wire and then washed.
• The cap is put in place.
• A container with a volume of at least three liters is placed under the gearbox.
• The oil drain plug is removed.
• The dipstick is pulled out to determine the level of the liquid being filled.

Changing the lubricant in the gearbox

Every 50-75 thousand km the oil in the VAZ gearbox needs to be changed. It can be done earlier, for example, when the transmission begins to hum and there is no way to repair it. If you add thicker oil, the hum will disappear for a while. As for how much oil needs to be filled, its volume for a standard gearbox is 3 liters. If the box is five-speed, then approximately 3.3 liters are needed. According to the instructions, the oil viscosity should be 80W-85.

There are two types of VAZ-21099 gearboxes. The first is old boxes without a probe. To change the oil in them you will need a special syringe. The second type includes modern models with a probe. With them, the whole procedure is no more complicated than replacing antifreeze.

This is how to change the lubricant in a gearbox

So, before work, it is necessary to clean the metal near the breather and filler neck as much as possible from dirt. Next, the rubber plug on the breather is removed, and the hole itself is cleaned with a clean wire or awl. After this, a container is placed, the drain bolt is unscrewed and the oil begins to flow out. Before the procedure, the probe must be pulled out and wiped. It is better to carry out the operation after a short trip, preferably in a warm box, so that the oil becomes as liquid as possible. After all the glass is filled, the plug is screwed in and new oil is poured in. In old boxes, the level is checked at the lower edge of the oil filler hole, in new ones - using a dipstick.

Of course, the operation takes more time than replacing antifreeze, but there is no need to check a large number of hoses and pipes. If after changing the oil the noise in the gearbox does not go away, then you will have to completely rebuild the gearbox. It is recommended to check the oil level again after a test drive.

The gearbox oil must be changed after long periods of inactivity. It is worth doing this even after purchasing the car, because it is not known what the previous owner poured into the transmission and whether he monitored the lubricant level.

In order for the engine to operate reliably, efficiently and for a long time, it is extremely important to monitor the quality and quantity of oil in it.

For the VAZ 2109, the recommended engine oil change interval is 10 thousand kilometers. But you need to focus on your specific situation. Practice shows that replacement is sometimes carried out much more often.

Reasons for replacement

There are conditions that must be adhered to so that the lubricant present in the engine system fulfills its protective functions and turns into the cause of failure of the power unit.

For summer, a more viscous lubricant is used than for winter. During prolonged operation in the engine, it loses its properties, additives, and chips from the engine's rubbing parts begin to adversely affect its condition. Over time, if the lubricant is not changed, this may lead to the need for a major overhaul of the power unit.

A little about oil

Before you begin the replacement procedure, you need to find out what and in what quantity should be filled.

In VAZ 2109 cars, usually 3 to 3.5 liters of lubricant are poured into the engine. At the same time, it is recommended to purchase a 4-liter container, so that as you use it you have the opportunity to top up the lubricant used.

Periodically check with a dipstick what level the lubricant is. Optimally, a trace of oil remains on the dipstick between the maximum and minimum marks. Golden mean. It’s not worth filling above the maximum mark, just like driving with underfilled lubricant.

We have decided on the volume of oil. What exactly should it be?

If we take into account the issue of quality, the optimal solution for the VAZ 2109 would be a synthetic lubricant. But it is the most expensive. Semi-synthetics are more affordable, but the quality characteristics are lower. If finances do not allow it at all, you can get by with mineral oil. But it’s better not to skimp on this issue.

Do not mix different brands of oil under any circumstances, and when replacing, first flush the system with a flushing compound, and then fill in new fluid.

Replacement

Now let's get down to work. There is nothing complicated here, so even a beginner can cope with the task.

1. Prepare a container in advance where you will drain the used lubricant from the engine. A regular 5 liter plastic bottle will do just fine. Plus, you'll need a funnel so you don't miss it and spill oil on the floor.
2. Warm up the engine. When the engine is hot, the oil becomes less viscous, which allows it to more efficiently and quickly exit the system when drained.
3. Place the car on a flat surface and turn on the handbrake.
4. Proceed to remove old grease. To do this, remove the engine protection, if any.
5. Place a drain container under the crankcase pan and unscrew the drain plug with a 17 mm wrench.
6. Don't forget, the oil is hot, so unscrew it carefully to avoid burns.
7. After removing the drain plug, wait about 10-15 minutes until all the oil is drained into the prepared container.
8. In parallel with changing the engine oil, it is recommended to change the oil filter. This can be done while the grease is draining. The filter is unscrewed with a special key or screwdriver, breaking through the housing. A new oil purifier is installed in its place.
9. When the lubricant has completely drained, return the plug to its place.
10. Pour some oil into the new filter. This must be done in several approaches so that the element has time to absorb the substance. Filling to about half the filter level is enough.
11. Be sure to oil the filter rubber seal and wipe the seat of the filter device dry with a dry rag. Place the filter in place and tighten it by hand.
12. Next, you will need to either simply add fresh oil or flush the system. Nowadays you can find a variety of cleaning products in any auto parts store. Take one of them and follow the instructions. After completing the flushing, you can fill in new lubricant.
13. To fill, open the lid on the motor and gradually begin pouring liquid through the funnel.
14. Fill in about 3 liters and wait until the lubricant is distributed throughout the system.
15. Gradually add another 500 milliliters of liquid. At the same time, monitor the amount of oil in the crankcase using a dipstick. If you have not flushed the system, you will probably have to fill in a little less than 3.5 liters. This is due to the imperfection of the drainage system.
16. Make sure that the dipstick shows the mark between the maximum and minimum lubrication levels.
17. Screw on the cap, start the engine and let it idle for a while. This will allow the liquid to fill the filter and channels.
18. When you start the engine, the red oil pressure indicator light will come on. After 10 seconds it will go out. If the lamp does not go out, most likely you have not screwed the filter on properly. Check it out.
19. Stop the engine, take the dipstick again and check the actual level of lubricant in the crankcase. If required, add a little liquid to the optimum level.
20. When completing work, be sure to check the system for signs of oil leaks. If the protection has been removed, return it to its place.

What is required for replacement?

To change the oil in a VAZ 2109 you will need a filter, suitable oil, and, if necessary, flushing fluid. Also stock up on rags and prepare a set of keys.

How to change the engine oil on a VAZ 2108-VAZ 21099?

Draining: 1) First, place the car on a flat surface.

2) Then unscrew and remove the oil filler cap from the car engine.

3) Then unscrew the drain plug, which is located at the bottom of the engine.

Note! Before you start unscrewing the drain plug, place an empty container under it in order to drain all the used oil from the engine into it!

4) After all the used oil has drained from the engine, screw the drain plug back on.

5) Next, try to unscrew the oil filter by hand.
