This is the most high-torque gearbox among classic VAZ gearboxes, because it has to work with the weakest 1.2 and 1.3 liter engines. There are over a dozen modifications of the boxes, and, in principle, each of them, assembled, will fit on any “classic” or all-wheel drive VAZ, which cannot be said about the details. Some gears and shafts of a 4-speed unit will not fit a 5-speed unit and may even be non-interchangeable with parts of the same type of gearbox released a year earlier. The fact is that VAZ produced gearboxes with three rows of gear ratios, designed for engines of different sizes. Let us remind you: until 1976 there was only series 2101 (I - 3.75; II - 2.3; III - 1.49; IV - 1.0; Z. x. - 3.87) for the gearbox of all Lada cars. From 1976 to 1987, VAZ 2106 and Niva were equipped with boxes with the “increased” row 2106 (3.24; 1.99; 1.29; 1.0; 3.34). The “intermediate” series - 2105 (3.67; 2.1; 1.36; 1.0; 3.53) appeared in 1979 for cars of the new VAZ 2104-2107 family. For eight years, the plant produced sets of gears of all three rows, until, finally, in 1987, KP 2101 and 2106 were abolished, and row 2105 became single, unified for the gearboxes of all Lada and Niva cars, both 4- and produced since 1985 5-speed. And finally, in 1992, VAZ finally consigned boxes 2101 and 2106 to oblivion, ceasing to make their original gears, and at the same time abandoning the distinctive markings of currently produced parts. However, old stocks remained on hand and in stores - you can pick up absolutely everything if you know how to distinguish one part from another. This is where the information below comes in handy.

Because of this, the interchangeability of housings and satellites is lost. What to do when changing boxes? Remember that window 2105 is more flexible to implement. But in general, the characteristics of the device were chosen as a compromise between dynamic characteristics, efficiency and reliability. Therefore, the VAZ-2106 with the 2101 gearbox will become more dynamic, but this will affect the durability of the rear axle parts. On the contrary, the VAZ-2101 “21013” with the “2106” gearbox accelerates more slowly.

Likewise, a gearbox with a predictable gear ratio improves dynamics but "stimulates the appetite" of the car, while at the same time increasing the load on the side gears and axle shafts. Reverse shift will exhibit a certain degradation in dynamics, especially in forward transmission.

If you change the transmission when you discover that the markings have been erased, the transmission value is determined without removing it from the car. To do this, place the gear shift lever in neutral and support one of the rear wheels with a jack (the second one should rest on the ground). Turn the raised wheel 20 revolutions and in this case calculate how many revolutions the propeller shaft made. By dividing the number by 10, you can see the final drive ratio.
