In 1984, the Volzhsky Automobile Plant began production of the VAZ 2108 model. For those times, the famous “eight” became a fairly progressive car with front-wheel drive, which had excellent handling and quite “passable” dynamics.
Today, the VAZ 2108 has ceased production; in 2005, it gave way to a modern model - the VAZ 2113, which has slightly different body panels, as well as a more modern interior, which is complemented by a bright European panel. Nevertheless, these cars are found quite often on city streets, and many of them have been modified as a result of tuning that car enthusiasts do with their own hands.

And you shouldn’t be too surprised, because the car is an excellent preparation for subsequent modifications. This model is in particular demand among young people, because its sporty nature and quite affordable price contribute to this. After purchasing such a car, there is often still money left for tuning it.

Next, the construction process tripped over the gearbox. Or rather, the lack of a suitable transmission. The VAZ gearbox can withstand up to 200 horsepower, but not 400, to which the engine was eventually accelerated. During the construction process, the gearbox was literally torn apart several times, and after opening it, inside there was a mess of gears floating in oil. The owner changed them once a week - I'm not exaggerating at all.

In the end, it became obvious that we needed to look for a “donor.” It was the legendary rally Lancia Delta Integrale. Having installed its box on the “eight”, all that remains is to find the wheel drives and the rocker. And if with the rocker everything was quite simple (it came from the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution VIII), then about the drives I had to think twice. And what do you think? Drives from the same "Lancia"? Or maybe from Evo? Again, bypassed, because they are made from army (!) torsion bars. They took a piece of suspension from a combat armored personnel carrier and made drives. It's like making a New Year's cracker out of a hydrogen bomb.

The history of the VAZ 2108 brand is filled with interesting facts. The car received the names now known to many - “nine” and “chisels”. This car is incredibly popular today. The entire “eight-nine” family, named in the early stages as Sputnik, and then Samara, appeared in the world thanks to the fruitful collaboration of masters from Tolyatti with the well-known German company Porsche.

This, without a doubt, gave the “chisel” excellent potential for subsequent improvements.

The general modification range of VAZ cars includes many car models, but the 2108 model and its modifications are the most common in the so-called tuning area. By the way, when tuning the VAZ 2114, the “relative” of which is the presented model 2108, you should start from the same principles that are used when improving the famous G8.

The VAZ 2108 became a test car and, today, the oldest representative of a front-wheel drive car in the entire VAZ family, and this in itself is attractive to many tuning fans. The car took part in sports racing, and after such testing on race tracks, the tuned new items made significant progress among the people and immediately won the hearts of many ordinary owners of 2108 cars.

When diagnosing, the first step is to check the cylinders and pistons by measuring the pressure during their operation. If the pressure is too low, the bearings or hydraulic pump are worn out. Replacing them will completely solve the problem with power loss. Reasons for checking parts for serviceability may be engine noise, too much fuel consumption or loss of power.

Tuning the VAZ 2108 is usually carried out according to the following scheme:

However, it should be noted that both the engine and transmission, together with the suspension of the presented model, “from the moment of birth” provide tolerable dynamics and power. Therefore, in such a situation, it is better to start tuning from the end. In order to generally get a beautiful and original car, you must first start updating the appearance of the car.

For safety reasons, a fire extinguishing system was installed in the cabin, and the brakes were modified - front discs from Lada Kalina Sport, calipers from Mazda RX-7. The rear brakes are almost standard front discs from the VAZ-2112, only with perforations. Literally everything had to be modified, because any factory part can become a weak point, so it is necessary to create a safety margin.

The result is the wildest dynamics. The best acceleration to 100 km/h in hard mode is given to the “eight” in 4 seconds, and the maximum speed is limited to approximately 270 km/h! The time required for the 0-200 km/h sprint is even more amazing - 11-12 seconds! Judge for yourself: with a car weighing 900 kg, it has a power/weight ratio of 445 hp/t. And this opens up the possibility of drag racing with opponents such as the Audi RS6 or BMW M3. I was driven in this car a couple of times, and I must say that after the ride I almost started stuttering. Monstrous impressions. The acceleration is so lightning fast that even a mute person will start swearing obscenely from the overloads and vibrations running across the floor at speeds over 200 km/h.

Next, you should update the rear lights of the car (which are certified by the car plant). If your car is not equipped with a backup brake light, it is better to install one. The front optics of the G8 are difficult to dramatically modify in any way; the only option is to install “eyelashes”.

However, in certain cases it is also possible to replace standard optics with modern alternatives. You should also install a special protective strip over the rear door of the car, which will protect the edge of the door from premature rotting. Of course, the standard rear-view mirrors also need to be replaced, preferably with drainage grooves and heating.

The miracles of transformation did not end there. The Gazelle cooling radiator has migrated to our G8, which does its job perfectly. There is also an oil cooler - its presence is vital on a sports car of this level. Even the gas tank is tuned - it’s a 20-liter plastic product with a system of anti-drip curtains, which prevent the gas pump from being fed with air instead of gasoline when cornering. In addition, the plastic solution is lighter, and the struggle when building a sports car is for every kilogram. “Nutritionists” recommended R17 forged wheels, which the owner purchased from a racing team in Tolyatti.

Next is the body. Its refinement is aimed at improving rigidity and aerodynamics. It’s good if at the same time you can make the car beautiful. Spacers and subframes are required. But this is not enough. The front bumper directs air flow to cool the front brakes. Of course, we also worked on the bottom. It was completely cut out and sheets of thick corrugated aluminum were installed. As a result, the bottom of the body is now perfectly smooth, which facilitates the passage of air flow, which is also divided by the rear diffuser so that lift does not appear at high speed. In order for the body to withstand the colossal loads that it experiences, a bolted safety cage was assembled in it, which, even if the maximum pressure is exceeded, will not burst, but will bend slightly. Its presence is difficult to overestimate, given that the power is so abundant that the wide wheels slip even in third gear if the asphalt is even a little wet.

This is the price of speed, and this should not be surprising. For example, preparing the same Lada Granta for circuit racing costs a little less than two million. Moreover, you need to understand that serious tuning is a hobby for well-to-do people whose interests border on motorsport. And nothing else.
