The creation of “2101” was preceded by a whole chain of organizational and technical measures, from the founding of the plant itself, to cooperation with various foreign companies and, first of all, with the Italian FIAT plant.

As a result, only the appearance remained in the new car from the Italian one. Tests carried out with the first six vehicles showed reliability and good maneuverability, so subsequent improvements were minor.

2101 - received the official name “Zhiguli” after the name of the small mountains beyond the Volga not far from the automobile plant, which is located in the city of Togliatti. The people gave the car a simple, respectful, memorable name “unit”. Later in the 80s, amid a decline in prestige, it received the name “kopek”. Years of production: 1970 - 1982. In total, more than 2.7 million copies were produced during this time.

Story

The pedigree of the VAZ 2101 car comes from the Italian sports sedan Fiat 124. Its first production copies rolled off the assembly line of the Volzhsky Automobile Plant on April 19, 1970. But full-scale production began only in August of the same year.

Many believe that the “kopek”, as grateful drivers also call this car, is almost an exact copy of its ancestor. However, it is not. Soviet engineers did their best. And, perhaps, some external similarity remains, but the internal configuration has been changed according to domestic conditions.

The main part of the changes affected the engine. Its volume remained at the same level - 1198 cubic meters. cm. But the cylinder diameters increased from 73 to 76 mm. Volume was maintained by reducing the piston stroke to 66 mm from the original 71.5 mm. Soviet designers also increased the center-to-center distance. This, by the way, served as a good basis for future tuning of the VAZ 2101 - after all, due to this feature, it was possible to repeatedly change the engine displacement. The engine also received an overhead camshaft, unlike the same Fiat 124, in which the location of this important part was different.

The clutch mechanism also changed - the diameter of the linings had to be increased from 182 mm to 200 mm. The developers of the VAZ 2101 also took into account domestic road conditions. This fact became the reason for the increase in ground clearance of the “penny” to 175 mm (although only in the front part - in the rear part the continuous axle housing did not allow this to be done). The engineers had to work on the brakes - the Fiat 124 disc brakes turned out to be unsuitable for our driving rhythm and were replaced with drum brakes. The design of the rear suspension has also changed. In general, the number of changes was about 800! And you say “Fiat”. As a result of all the changes, the weight of the VAZ 2101 increased to 945 kg. By the way, although the glory of Soviet engineers is undeniable, in the process of creating the model they received significant assistance from Italian specialists.

The last VAZ 2101 was released in 1988. But the car itself later received a second life. After all, technical tuning of the VAZ 2101 is widespread due to the fact that the car is very amenable to many changes, both in design and construction.
