Attempts by the manufacturer to refine the models

The production of ZIL cars began many decades ago. For example, ZIL-130 appeared in 1956. It was originally equipped with a 5.2-liter carburetor engine with 130 horsepower and a lifting capacity of 4 tons. But tests showed that the truck lacks certain qualities, one of which is dynamics. Therefore, the manufacturer decided to modify the ZIL car. The tuning affected the power unit, which was completely replaced. The new engine had a power of 150 horsepower. Thanks to the new elements, the car has become more load-bearing and durable.

Attempts to correct the shortcomings also affected the ZIL-5301 (better known as “Bychok”). Initially, for its production they used an engine from tractors, a cabin from previous models, and a gearbox from a ZIL-130. The truck was assembled as a construction kit, but the developers no longer had time to test it. That's why ZIL car owners do their own tuning.

The producers made an attempt to change the Bull. This modification received the index ZIL-53012. The idea was to combine our own developments with imported technology. As a result, the cabin and platform from ZIL vehicles were installed on the chassis from the Mercedes 709D.

Tuning the interior of ZIL-130

The interior of the truck was not particularly comfortable or presentable. That is why one of the main directions for improving the car is considered to be updating the interior. Having imagination and a desire to experiment will allow you to get rid of the spirit of the era of the last century. First, you should take care of additional noise and vibration insulation.

At the next stage, the seats will be improved. This interior detail is subject to significant loads and loses its presentation over time. Standard leatherette overheats from the sun's rays, which is uncomfortable for both the driver and passengers. The old upholstery is completely removed and modern, practical and wear-resistant materials are placed in its place. Engine improvement

If everything is more or less clear with the cabin and interior, then curbing the “appetite” of the truck will not be so easy. This will require certain technical knowledge and skills. Correctly improving the engine will allow you to achieve greater operating efficiency with less fuel consumption. At the same time, it is quite possible to modernize the power plant yourself.

The main question when tuning a ZIL-130: how not to lose power? The best option would be to re-equip the unit into a diesel unit. Fuel consumption will decrease by about 20 liters, and the price of diesel fuel is usually lower. The combination of these points will allow you to save on operating costs and maintenance in the future. Removal of the “engine” should be carried out as carefully and carefully as possible so as not to damage fasteners and other sensitive parts.

At the next stage, the frame is modified, the amplifiers and brackets are welded, and the driveshaft is lengthened. The engine, converted to use diesel fuel, is mounted in the prepared compartment. Next, the muffler pipes are modified and the remaining parts of the car are assembled. Before starting the new engine for the first time, you should completely bleed the supply system from the tank to the fuel pump. This will get rid of excess air. If everything is done correctly, power indicators will remain at the same level, and efficiency will increase significantly.

Design

The presented crossover of the ZIL brand is designed in the style of many modern budget-class SUVs. Externally, the model, in particular, is similar to its direct competitors - Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos. The similarity with Korean crossovers can be seen in the outlines of the body, characterized by sharp transitions and smooth edges. However, despite the above, the Russian-American new product has a unique design that sets it apart from other compact SUVs.

The presented crossover ZIL-131 2021-2022 is, first of all, distinguished by the A-pillars that are heavily tilted back, which turn into an almost flat roof line. The latter is located at a subtle slope in relation to the stern. The compact rear pillars of the ZIL crossover are designed, apparently, with an eye on the Kia Seltos. Under them there is a fold, which not only visually increases the dimensions of the rear part of the body, but also makes the wheel fenders more voluminous.

The smooth hood of the presented new product is framed at the edges by rounded folds, which emphasize the youth design of the SUV. Moreover, as they move towards the front, they seem to go into the body. The edge of the hood in the area of ​​the radiator grille smoothly bends downwards. This design decision, combined with the heavily flared pillars, is likely to have a positive effect on the car's aerodynamic performance.

From full-fledged SUVs, the new ZIL crossover has been replaced by a large rectangular radiator grille, repeating the smooth curve of the front part of the body. It contains several horizontal wide lamellas with cutouts for airflow into the engine compartment. An interesting detail of the front part of the body is the large head optics with two sections of LED lights, above which lie LED DRL strips.

The second notable detail is that the front bumper is visually divided into 3 parts. The central one, as noted earlier, is given over to a large radiator grille, and the two side ones, going deep into the body, contain raised niches for black plastic inserts containing round fog lights. The image of the front part of the body is completed by a protrusion on the front bumper, simulating a splitter.

The Russian new product was equipped with large rims, which is why the developer had to expand the side arches. Along the bottom of the side doors and fenders there is a thin strip of plastic body kit, painted in a contrasting black color. As in the case of the Kia Seltos, the new ZIL crossover has very compact rear windows due to the rising window sill line, which will negatively affect visibility from the cabin.

The food of the presented crossover ZIL-130 2021-2022 is designed in a sporty style. This feature is emphasized by the heavily covered rear window, above which there is a compact wing with an additional brake light. The previously mentioned protrusion, which is located under the support struts, smoothly moves to the stern, forming here a kind of spoiler. Narrow lights with LED strips in the center are attached to it.

The rest of the stern of the presented new product runs almost vertically in relation to the road surface. But because of this protrusion, there is a feeling that the rear part of the body has three-dimensional shapes. The rear bumper recedes noticeably from the body, which is more typical for SUVs than for compact crossovers. The body kit, made of black plastic, contains 2 wide exhaust pipes. This feature indirectly indicates the presence of a powerful engine under the hood of the car. But given how the presented crossover is positioned, most likely one of the pipes is an imitation.

Cabin fitting

They start with tuning the ZIL-130 cabin. Since in the standard version it does not want to sit in the prepared place, a significant modification of the element will be required. Here it is necessary to intervene in the bottom of the part, as well as the power structures. The pedal mounting block is moved 15 centimeters forward.

As a result of the reconstruction, a kind of box is formed that can be used for a subwoofer and other components of a multimedia system. The compartment is covered with an aluminum lid on top, on which the armrest, glove compartment and cup holder will be placed.

The instrument panel will fit from an American donor, after a little adjustment to the panel body of a domestic truck. The device is installed in a standard socket and is finished with plexi protection. For the base of the bumper, a homemade structure is used from a square pipe, which is sheathed with sheet metal. Suitable fang-like hooks are attached to the resulting angular part. Decorative moldings are fitted to the outer part of the bumper. To give the future pickup truck the appropriate image, the front part of the cladding and the wings are carefully adjusted, and then connected to each other by welding. Then all seams and roughness are puttied and sanded.

Body

The body and rear fenders were made of sheet metal, then puttied and painted. The wings have an incomparable shape, it should be noted that the author did his best, the result was a very successful design from a design point of view. The rear bumper carries EuroFURA lights framed by a rubber molding.

Work on the car is not finished yet, the author has big plans for the future, but even in the form it has now, the custom makes an amazing impression. Frame and suspension

When tuning a ZIL-130 with your own hands in the direction in question, the “Ford” frame is shortened by cutting out the necessary parts and then welding the side members again. Reinforcing elements are laid along the seams. The frame is cleaned of rust, treated with a primer and painted orange.

In accordance with the length of the frame, the cardan and fuel tank are shortened. The first part is cut on turning equipment, after which the fitted parts are welded into a solid block. After the modification, the tank loses about 50 liters in volume and in the final version holds about 90 liters.

The springs in the suspension are cut and the spring earrings are modified, which ensures that the car is lowered by about 50 cm (across the cabin). The wheels are equipped with alloy wheels with a classic pattern and size 305/55R20.

Ghostbusters

The car, like the surroundings, is impressive, clearly reminiscent of the good old animated series about Ghostbusters. In any case, converted to an American pickup truck of the 50s, ZIL looks a lot like Lizun, having received almost identical colors.

If we discard any associations, then we can see that the almost zero ground clearance, which can be observed in this converted pickup truck, is considered a special chic among the craftsmen. It is also worth noting that achieving such an effect is not at all difficult - properly selected small-radius wheels will certainly cope with the task.

Exhaust system

Further tuning of the ZIL-130 with its transformation into a pickup truck continues with modifications to the exhaust unit. As an option, you can use the original Ford engine as a power unit (V-shaped six-cylinder petrol engine with an increased volume of up to 4.2 liters). A Mopar 5.2 Magnum V8 with 500 horsepower is also suitable.

The exhaust system represents the most simple and original design. Take two stainless steel pipes with a diameter of 63 mm and place them in a 76 mm muffler. The difference in the length of the pipes allows the engine to produce a characteristic booming sound at low speeds.

Specifications

The technical part of the presented crossover raises questions. The fact is that the developer who published the render images did not say anything about the possible motor range. However, if we consider that the first ZIL SUV will be created on the basis of the Jeep platform, then we can assume that the presented model will borrow the “trolley” from the Compass crossover. This means that both cars will share the engine range.

In this case, the ZIL-131 2021-2022 crossover may receive a basic 2-liter “aspirated” engine that develops up to 150 hp. power. Optionally, the presented new product will be equipped with another naturally aspirated 2.5-liter unit, developing up to 175 hp. Each of the engines is combined with a 9-speed automatic transmission and proprietary all-wheel drive, capable of transmitting up to 100% of the traction torque to any wheel. Also, both engines are equipped with a system that adapts the transmission to current road conditions.

Body part

Dump trucks GAZ 53 is not a vehicle from the “premium” series, it is a hard worker and is intended for transporting goods. The production and sale of the new GAZ-53 truck ceased in 1993. First of all, GAZ tuning is aimed at improving the power unit. If the “original” motor becomes unusable, it does not always make sense to repair it. A good alternative replacement option is diesel with its undeniable advantages:

The most popular for the “fifty-third” was the engine of the Minsk Motor Plant D-245 (D-240, D-243). The motor has a simple design and reasonable price. In addition, there are not so many improvements during reinstallation.

Tuning the rear engine is very simple, and this is due in no small part to the vehicle manufacturer - the Gorky Automobile Plant. When developing new projects, GAZ tried to unify the machine parts as much as possible.

Therefore, the rear axle from the GAZ 3307 model fits well on the GAZ 53 - the design itself is the same, only the main pair gears have a different gear ratio.

Installing a bridge from a GAZ 3307 makes the “lawn” faster. You can install a self-locking rear axle from the gas 66, the axles have no external differences and are completely interchangeable. A five-speed gearbox on the “lawn” can be installed from GAZ 3309 (GAZ 3308 “Sadko”), craftsmen also “introduce” 5speed. Gearbox from a ZIL 130 truck.

Otherwise, the chassis differs little from that of a bonnet truck. But thanks to a different layout, the length of the side platform increased from 3752 to 4773 mm. A longer platform can be installed on a ZIL-4329BL with a distance between axles of 4680 mm.

The engines are Minsk diesels, equipped with Bosch electronic control to comply with Euro III. One of the engines, 130 horsepower, is intended primarily for utility vehicles. Flatbed versions, tractors, as well as trucks with an extended wheelbase will be equipped with a more powerful 151-horsepower D-245.30.

Of course, the cabover was at least ten years late.

Improved driver comfort

One of the significant problems of domestically produced cars is the presence of serious noise in the cabin. This noise appears not only as a result of the movement of the car, but also from the friction of various trim elements. And the operation of the power unit leads to unpleasant vibrations inside the car. To reduce the impact of this “chronic disease”, it is recommended to use vibration and sound insulation.

Description

  6. The filter should be changed in the reverse order;
  7. Fill in the oil and let the power unit run for 5 minutes;
  8. Check the oil level using the dipstick and top up if necessary.

Design

If you look at the design of the engine, it is based on a four-stroke eight-cylinder unit with a carburetor system with a constant fuel supply.

A small feature is the V-shaped arrangement of the cylinders. Due to this, it is possible to obtain very high power and low weight of the engine.

All pistons and cylinders are driven by one crankshaft.

The power unit also has a liquid cooling system, which is very convenient. The car owner will be able to drive in any weather.

The lubrication system has a combined system: high pressure and splashing. Thanks to this, all parts of the ZIL 130 engine will receive their portion of oil and will not fail.

The engine power supply system of ZIL 375 and 130 is very similar. Their fuel is supplied forcefully and constantly, which is very cool. Due to this, the power unit will work without interruption.

Modifications

Separately, I would like to talk about some modifications of the ZIL 130 engine. The fact is that in Soviet times they tried to design a vehicle that would last a long period of time.

  • The first cars were equipped with a simple carburetor engine with a V-shaped cylinder arrangement. This system had an engine capacity of 5,200 cubic centimeters. After some time, everyone became convinced that it was technically impossible to develop the potential that was required.
  • Because of this, the designers produced the same V-shaped unit, but with eight cylinders. Due to this, it was possible to increase power to 150 horsepower, which is very good. Neither the ZIL 357 engine nor the ZIL 131 brand engine could boast of such potential.
  • Next, the designers released a completely new motor, which allowed it to accelerate to 90 kilometers per hour. The main features include a four-stroke cycle and overhead valve arrangement.
