How to prepare stamped wheels for painting. painting stamped wheels: technology, choice of paint

Stamped steel wheels are an excellent solution for driving on domestic roads where there are often potholes or bumps. They hold their shape well because they are made of steel. In addition, putting them in order is not as expensive as, for example, cast ones. And the modest appearance can be corrected by painting steel wheels, which will give them a new look. To carry out this work, it is not at all necessary to contact specialists, since everything can be done yourself. It is enough to prepare the necessary tools and follow several important steps.

Do-it-yourself painting of discs

Having decided on the painting technology, you can begin directly purchasing paint materials and work. Let's start with perhaps the simplest method - painting the wheels using the usual method.

Video - painting alloy wheels with your own hands:

For this we need primer and auto enamel. They can be purchased in the form of ready-made cans at any auto parts store. In this case, the effectiveness of the work will depend on how effectively you can pre-clean the disc of dirt and old paint. The easiest way to do this is with an electric drill and a special attachment in the form of a metal circular brush.

After cleaning the disk, its surface is degreased with a solvent, after which it is dried and a primer is applied to it. After the primer has dried, enamel should be applied to the disc in several layers, with each layer first drying.

This method is the simplest, and it is suitable for stamped disks, and the reliability of protection largely depends on the thoroughness of each stage of the work.

Other painting technologies are much more complex and, let’s say right away, are more applicable to the conditions of a car service center. However, if desired, you can also produce them yourself.

Today, the most effective way to paint both cast and stamped wheels is the so-called polymer or powder painting.

Video - the process of powder coating wheels:

To apply the appropriate polymer, you will need a special paint gun with an electrostatic effect, as well as a polymerization chamber with a temperature of about two thousand degrees Celsius.

It goes without saying that it will not be possible to carry out such a procedure on our own, and therefore we will look towards simpler and rather effective methods.

This method includes painting wheels with liquid rubber. It is produced using special “rubber” paints, which are also sold in cans. What distinguishes them is their meager range of colors (most often liquid rubber is available in black and white) and the characteristic rough texture of the coating.

To paint discs with liquid rubber yourself, you must first prepare the disc for painting in the same way as in the case of regular car enamel - that is, sand, degrease and prime.

The primer in this case is not a necessary step, since the rubber paint itself serves as both a primer and a protective coating and has high adhesion to various materials.

Video instructions for painting wheels with liquid rubber yourself:

When painting, it is important to ensure that no traces of rust remain on the disc. They can be removed by sanding and using special rust converters, which are also sold in auto parts stores.

The paint should be applied evenly in several layers, avoiding the appearance of drips on the surface and maintaining a constant distance from the sprayer to the surface of the disc.

How to paint forged wheels

Forged wheels, unlike stamped ones, undergo a more complex manufacturing process, during which the required shape of the wheel is formed by forging, while the structure of the metal changes, it becomes more durable and elastic. Such products allow any painting method, including high-temperature treatment during powder painting.

Forged wheels

When painting forged wheels, it is necessary to carry out the following operations during the preparation and painting process:

  1. Remove the tire and clean the metal from dirt and dust;
  2. Carry out a thorough inspection of the rim shape and remove metal corrosion;
  3. If necessary, grind the metal in places where corrosion has formed.

  4. Degrease, putty and sand the putty areas;

  5. Apply 2-3 layers of primer, including on the side surface;

  6. After the primer layers have dried, degrease the surface;
  7. Apply a coat of paint;

  8. After drying, coat the disc with 2 layers of clear varnish.

Preparing for painting

Before starting the painting process, you need to perform several necessary preparatory procedures:

  • tire removal;
  • cleaning discs from dirt and dust using special detergents for cars;
  • examination to detect the results of mechanical damage - chips, scratches and dents;
  • putty for deep damage (subject to complete drying);
  • cleaning with sandpaper;
  • grinding and degreasing the surface.

You need to degrease the discs well

Washing the car will not remove all the dirt from the discs, so you need to additionally clean the surface with a brush. It is necessary to remove the old paint. Sandpaper can handle this successfully. Dust is removed with compressed air or a regular dry cloth. Minor defects such as uneven surfaces and small scratches do not require putty. They can be easily removed with a primer. Degreasing is necessary to ensure that the applied paint does not peel off. Therefore, this process cannot be skipped either.

Since discs are painted from a spray can, and with this type of painting it is impossible to apply paint clearly to the surface to be painted, you need to worry about protecting parts that are not involved in the process. Masking tape is useful for protection. The last step will be priming. Apply a thin layer of primer to ensure an even coating.

How to use spray paint for rims

Before you start applying spray paint directly to the surface to be painted, it would be a good idea to test it on something unnecessary. This will help you understand how the paint is sprayed and what exactly will help you avoid getting the dye on unpainted parts.

Before you start applying paint from a can directly onto the surface to be painted, it would be a good idea to test it on something unnecessary

In order for the contents of the can to become homogeneous, it must be shaken before use. If we paint discs with a can, the temperature should not be lower than 10 degrees, and the optimal temperature for quick and high-quality drying of the paint should not fall below 2 degrees Celsius.

For the convenience of applying paintwork, the disk must be hung on a special hook. In paint cylinders, sprayers can be with a round or vertical torch. High-quality painting of wheels from a spray can with your own hands directly depends on the technique chosen by the master. This can be easily verified by test spraying. The consumption of dye is more economical with a sprayer with a round torch.

Basically, all modern disks have a complex shape, with many different elements and holes. This makes painting much more difficult. You need to carefully ensure that all elements are painted over. Paint should be applied in several layers, making sure to maintain the interval between them. The optimal time between application of layers is 10–15 minutes. Before using the vehicle, you must wait until the paint has completely dried.

Before using the vehicle, you must wait until the paint has completely dried.

Precautionary measures

Despite the apparent simplicity of the work, you still need to follow some safety rules. The cylinder is under pressure, this should be remembered. Under no circumstances should you refill it yourself. Avoid placing paint near fire or heating devices. Hide from direct sunlight. Temperatures exceeding 50 degrees are strictly prohibited for storing paint in cylinders. The room where painting work is carried out must be well ventilated and equipped with a ventilation system. Keep away from children! Monitor the expiration date of the product. Properly dispose of expired or used paint.

All stages of preparation

It is clear that it is best to clean the disc “to the metal” before painting. In this case, only sandpaper (ISO P400-P1500) and, perhaps, a drill with a metal brush are used.

The problem is that such cleaning will take more than one day. But the result will please you with its appearance:

In order not to waste time, the surface is only cleaned of rust, then sanded and degreased. The “old paint” remains. This option is also considered acceptable. Let us list the stages of preparation “step by step”:

  1. Thoroughly rinse the disc with water. To simplify the task, use a brush;
  2. Mechanical rust removal;
  3. If necessary, you can use a rust converter: apply the product, leave it for 2 hours, then grind the surface and clean it. You cannot use water!
  4. Degreasing (white spirit or solvent 646 is suitable);
  5. Applying putty if the wheel has obvious defects.
  6. Apply two layers of primer with an interval of 20 minutes.

The last step is to use a universal acrylic primer. These products are sold in aerosol packaging.

Note that phosphoric acid can act as a rust converter. And if the finishing layer is applied, it takes a day to dry the soil.

It is important to know: once a mark has been made on the metal with sandpaper, water should not touch the surface in principle. Use organic solvents for cleaning.

The priming itself is a dress rehearsal for the painting process. To simplify these “processes”, the disk can be installed on an inverted bucket. The rim is then painted by turning the disc with the desired side facing you. As you can see, everything is simple.

You may have to work with sandpaper after applying the primer. Sanding with P1500 sandpaper is carried out before painting, which is mandatory.

Painting process

So we got to the most important thing. Let's look at how to properly paint stamped wheels so that you don't have to redo everything from scratch later. In principle, there is nothing complicated in this process:

Of course, not everyone has a spray gun, nor does everyone have special equipment. Therefore, an upside down bucket, unnecessary tires, etc. will help again. The main thing is to be smart, as the author of this photo did:

Also, it is advisable to follow these tips:

  • When using an aerosol, the can must be shaken periodically;
  • The temperature of the aerosol package should not be too low: 30-35 degrees is the norm;
  • Keep the aerosol at a distance of 20 cm from the surface (no less);
  • When painting, you should not stay in one place for a long time, otherwise streaks will form.

The paint is applied in two or three layers, maintaining an interval of 10 minutes. An hour after painting, the surface is treated with varnish. You can use the finished product within a day. But it’s better to wait 60-80 hours – during this time the varnish gains maximum strength.

Selection of materials, tips

Typically, acrylic paint, glossy or matte, is used to paint metal. The primer for this paint is also acrylic (universal). There are also nitro paints. All of the above materials are packaged in an aerosol. But, as is easy to understand, not every primer is suitable for nitro enamels.

Be aware that nitrogen based primers and paints are prohibited for use in most countries. Here are some tips that are known even to beginners:

  1. The higher the air temperature, the faster drying occurs;
  2. The color of the primer should approximately match the color of the paint;
  3. The aerosol must be shaken before use. The packaging temperature, moreover, should not be lower than 25 degrees. This advice applies to any aerosol: with paint, primer or varnish.

It was said how to paint stamped wheels if you know that the work will be done with your own hands. And therefore, such an option as using powder paints was not considered. Good luck. According to reviews, 4 discs require: 2 cans of dye (450 ml), one can of primer (450 ml), one can of varnish.

Unfolding is not necessary

Probably, comments are unnecessary here. Do the same to save time.

Hub like a lathe

There is a method that allows you to quickly paint the rim:

  1. Let's say there is rust on the surface of the rim. To find out about this, you will have to disassemble the disk (Fig. 1);
  2. Next, the disk is mounted on the hub, the engine is started and the gear is engaged (Fig. 2);
  3. If you are using a left-hand hub, turn the steering wheel to the left, and vice versa;
  4. Using cloth-based sandpaper, sanding is carried out (Fig. 3). It is better to fix the sandpaper on a block;
  5. Just as “preparation” was done in step 4, painting can be done (Fig. 4).

All steps are illustrated in the photo:

Use this method at your own risk.

Polymerization and coating thickness

Sometimes it is quite difficult to determine the quality of work by appearance, and visible defects will only be noticeable after you have picked up the car.

To more accurately check the uniformity of the coating layer, use a paint tester. It is very simple to work with it: just apply the work surface to the body and you will immediately see how much putty was put in a certain place. Remember that the factory paint surface is 200 microns thick. To this figure add 15% for errors.

Powder paints

The powder contains:

  • Polyester resin,
  • Special pigment.

A surface coated with powder paint acquires powerful electrostatic properties. It fits perfectly on alloy wheels. High wear resistance guarantees long-term preservation of the coating.

But there is one caveat: to use it you need to have additional equipment. We are talking about a sandblasting device. Without it, it will not be possible to create a normal coating. Powder paint is used only in factory conditions.

How to paint car rims with your own hands in a garage?

Equipment

I suggest, first of all, to go through the materials and necessary equipment. An ordinary electric drill with a set of various attachments will act as a sandblaster. By the way, a set of attachments can later be used for polishing a car body, as well as for polishing glass, so don’t skimp, buy the right equipment.

Dye

Before painting, you will need a primer in cans. The paint should be acrylic, try to buy varnish and paint from the same manufacturer. Why acrylic paint and not powder paint? I won’t argue that powder paint has no equal, it’s an ideal option, but there is one caveat: the technology for applying this type of painting requires special, expensive equipment.

I doubt, however, that any of you have a miniature sandblaster or heat chamber in your garage. But who knows? If available, you should give preference to powder paint

Buy paint only from trusted authorized sales points, pay attention to the expiration date, as well as the quantity of paint. Don't buy it back to back, it's better to stay

Materials

The sandpaper should be of different grain sizes, from fine to coarse; it will be useful for preparatory work. Be sure to buy a solvent, you will need it to degrease the prepared surface

An old shirt or T-shirt will do as a rag - it doesn’t matter

Now, you can, and as they say, from words to action... Let's start painting car rims with our own hands.

Surface preparation

The first step, of course, is to remove the old paintwork. Try to wash the disc as thoroughly as possible using a brush and washing powder

I think your wife won’t mind if you borrow a handful of the miracle remedy called “Ariel” or “Tide”, it doesn’t matter. It would be best, of course, if you use drill attachments and perform a “total” cleaning of the disk

In order to paint discs with your own hands, you should treat the entire surface of the disc without exception. Therefore, do not hide the drill with attachments far away, we need it again. In hard-to-reach places, crevices and bends of the disc, work with your hands. While removing the old coating with sandpaper, occasionally rinse the disc with water.

The procedure for using sandpaper should be as follows: No. 200-400-600. After you finish sanding the disc, if necessary, you can use automotive finishing putty to eliminate minor defects on the surface of the disc. There will be defects in any way, since I doubt that you are going to paint the new disk, so minor “side effects” will be 100%.

Let's start priming the surface

Primer work is one of the most important stages when painting car rims. As soon as the “stripping” and sanding of the disc is finished, treat it with a degreaser, solvent No. 646 will help you with this. After this, you can proceed directly to the priming process itself.

Correctly, the primer should be applied in three layers. Make sure to allow each layer to dry properly for some time. As soon as the third layer is applied, I strongly recommend forcing it to dry. Since painting car rims takes place, roughly speaking, “on your knees” in the garage, you certainly won’t have a heat-heating oven, so as an alternative, you can use an industrial hair dryer or, in extreme cases, your beloved wife’s hair dryer. How to take it from her - steal it, beg it, earn it - is your problem.

Options for painting stamped discs with your own hands

Most motorists who personally restore the appearance of stamped wheels use three types of paints:

  • acrylic;
  • automotive nitro enamels;
  • liquid rubber.

Acrylic paints in aerosol cans

Acrylic coatings are quite strong and durable, and when applied they emit virtually no odor and dry quickly. The choice of such paints is very wide, so choosing a color is not a problem. If desired, you can paint the wheels with acrylic in 2 colors using masking tape or a special contour tape 6 mm wide. Two-tone wheels look impressive, which is why this option is becoming increasingly popular.

Stamped rims, painted in two colors

Nitroenamel is suitable for budget painting of wheels. It is quite durable and dries even faster than acrylic. One problem is that when painted, it emits a very unpleasant odor and emits harmful fumes, so you need to provide good ventilation of the room and use respiratory protection (a respirator).

The main advantage of liquid rubber over other types of coatings is to level out small potholes on the surface, which is facilitated by the filler of the composition - crushed rubber. In addition, the layer of liquid rubber is thick and elastic, which helps it withstand impacts from pebbles and other mechanical impacts. The composition dries quickly, and after hardening it does not require additional protection with varnish.

Liquid rubber is also sold in cylinders

Choosing paint

The final result will depend on the correct choice. There are several paint options:

  • Powder. As reviews note, they are the most durable. The composition is created on the basis of dry polymer material. Often, this technology for painting stamped wheels is used at the factory by the manufacturers themselves. This method is rarely used at home, as it requires a spray gun and special skills. The cost of the powder composition is the highest among others. Therefore, the question of its use on budget steel wheels remains open.
  • Acrylic. Widely distributed among car owners. Typically sold in aerosol cans. They have high adhesion and can stay on the surface for more than a year. The cost of one can of acrylic paint averages from 200 to 500 rubles.
  • Liquid rubber. This technology came to us from the USA. The method involves applying a rubber compound (not paint) to the surface of the disc. What is remarkable about this composition? Unlike powder and acrylic products, this coating can be removed at any time without damaging the previous, factory-made layer of paint. It looks like this:

However, the cost of a can of liquid rubber is 2-3 times higher than that of acrylic. And the composition lies unevenly on the surface, forming streaks. Therefore, the most budget-friendly and practical option is a can of acrylic paint. You can choose any color - from banal black to pink or purple.

How to hide defects?

It often happens that the paintwork has chips and scratches. But there is no point in deleting the entire layer. How to hide unwanted defects? To do this, we apply “anti-gravel” to the surface. Thanks to its shagreen, the composition will ideally hide all defects. It's simple and convenient.

So, we found out how to paint stamped wheels at home.

One of the weakest, vulnerable points of every car is the car wheels. They are exposed to the harmful effects of impacts from stones, poor-quality roads, curbs, branches, trees, and others. Over time, the factory paint wears off, wears and scratches, resulting in wheels that are not very attractive. To restore them to their original beauty and protection from damage, special paint for discs is used. Today, a wide variety of automotive paints are produced in the form of powders, liquid formulations, and solutions in aerosol cans.

Enamel coating

This option is the most accessible. Its main advantage is the rapid renewal of the outer surface of the disk and the restoration of its attractive appearance.

The industry produces enamels of various types. It can be applied directly to old paint, without prior preparation. A huge range of different shades allows you to find the most suitable color. The following shades are very popular among motorists:

The advantage of the compositions in aerosol cans is their excellent anti-corrosion properties. This is especially true when taking into account that the weakest protection of the stamped disk from all kinds of mechanical damage can be called the most vulnerable point.

Procedure for painting discs with acrylic paint

Do-it-yourself painting of alloy wheels, like painting the entire car, consists of several important stages. Therefore, the process of painting wheels, from preparation to final drying, can take several days.

Preparing alloy wheels for painting

  • The first operation will be to remove the tires from the rims. If you don’t want to do this, then you can cover the tire with polyethylene and apply masking tape along the edge of the rim (see the video below).
  • Now the discs must be thoroughly cleaned of dirt, dust and traces of bitumen. Car shampoo or other household detergent is suitable for this.
  • After cleaning, alloy wheels are inspected. The marker highlights problem areas (chips, blistering paint, scratches).
  • Using a sandblaster or a drill with a brush, old paintwork and traces of corrosion are removed.
  • After mechanical treatment, chemical degreasing of the surface is performed. To do this, a rag is moistened with a solvent and the disc is wiped.
  • Deep scratches and pits must be repaired with putty. After the material has dried, sanding is done with sandpaper. Sometimes several layers are required to level the surface.
  • After all defects have been leveled, it is necessary to degrease the entire disk and hang it on a wire.

Applying paint and varnish to alloy wheels

The application of paint and varnish during the painting process of alloy wheels consists of three operations.

Padding. The primer is applied in 2-3 even layers. Each layer must dry completely. To speed up drying, you can use a hair dryer or heat gun. Applying paint. It is performed in the same way as priming. The paint is sprayed from a distance of 40-50 cm, number of layers: 2-3 layers

When performing this operation, special attention is paid to hard-to-reach areas and corner edges. Each coat of paint must be completely dry. Varnishing

This is the final treatment during the wheel painting process. Applying varnish is no different from previous painting operations. In order for the cast disc to acquire the necessary shine, only two layers of varnish will be enough.

The final hardening of the varnish will occur in 2-3 days, after which the alloy wheels will be ready for use.

Preparation

The ideal option is to break up the tires. But this requires additional expenditure of time and money. In addition, not every motorist has a set of spare wheels. Therefore, work is often carried out on site. But painting stamped rims on the car itself is not the right solution. This will cause a lot of leaks. In addition, paint pollen can get on the arches and other body elements.

After removing the wheels from the car, we clean them of the previous paint. If you just need to change the color while the paintwork is completely intact, you can apply the composition without stripping. As practice shows, acrylic enamel adheres well to such a surface. But in this case, you shouldn’t apply primer - it simply won’t dry out. We perform priming only on bare metal. You can clean it either with a drill attachment or by hand with coarse sandpaper. If there is rust, treat the area with a converter. Next, we degrease the surface. An anti-silicone product containing white spirit is suitable for this. The composition perfectly removes dirt, greasy deposits, as well as some acrylic paints.

How to paint car rims with your own hands using a spray can

The issue of painting is of interest to every car owner who monitors the condition of the vehicle. When car wheels lose their aesthetics, spray painting of car wheels is relevant for anyone. New wheels are expensive, but painting them yourself helps save money. Restoring a car at a car repair shop is expensive. This type of painting is usually carried out when the wheel's geometric shape is greatly changed, or there is significant corrosion damage.

Painted disc

Powder painting is of higher quality than balloon painting, but it is a financial expense that not every car owner agrees to. In addition, the powder does not adhere well to aluminum or magnesium discs. However, I also don’t want to see tarnished wheels every day. The problem is not only aesthetics - the peeling coating no longer protects against corrosion, which means that the time for changing the disk is approaching with alarming progression.

Painting car rims from a spray can yourself is a task that can be done even by a non-professional. At the same time, simply spraying paint will not work; this will not lead to a high-quality result.

Experts highlight some features:

Before painting, shake the can well. Before work, you need to study the instructions for use in detail and test the paint on a metal surface. The cans can spray paint in a round torch or fan like a modern spray gun. A fan gives a better result, since a clear overlap boundary is obtained, and the coloring matter lies evenly. Once the paint is applied in 2 layers with an interval of 10 minutes, it should dry well. When the surface is dry, you can varnish it to make the disc more durable. You need to wait until the varnished surface dries, and only then can you remove the masking tape. Painting car wheels with a spray can is a completely acceptable option.

It is important to take your time and follow the paint manufacturer's recommendations. The result of spray painting depends primarily on the painting method. It is best to prefer torch spraying for independent work.

When the spray is in the shape of a circle, paint is used sparingly when painting car wheels. Car wheels usually have a complex shape with a large number of bends and holes. When painting them, it is important that the dye penetrates everywhere. This is easier to do with a round torch spray.

Sometimes the complex geometry of the discs forgives minor coloring errors.

Dust is hardly noticeable. If you paint according to the instructions, then everything will definitely turn out perfect. If something happens, you can always repaint it.

Rust on the disc

Technology for painting discs with powder paint yourself and video of the process

The principle of powder coating is as follows: in the spraying device, paint particles are electrified, which in the process are attracted to the grounded plane of the part. The surface polymerization procedure is carried out in a heat chamber. The technology includes three stages:

  1. Preparation.
  2. Painting.
  3. Heat treatment.

Preparatory stage

Some motorists neglect this point when painting car rims with powder paint, and, I must say, in vain. Without quality preparation it is impossible to achieve the appropriate quality of coating. Masters use the following methods:

  • Chemical and abrasive treatment
    is a procedure for removing rust and old paint. For implementation, a metal brush, sandpaper, sandblasting machine, as well as acid and alkaline preparations are used.
  • Pickling
    is the removal of contaminants and corrosion that did not respond to the initial stage of processing. The operation is performed using solutions of phosphoric, hydrochloric, nitric or sulfuric acid.
  • Phosphating
    – treatment with iron, manganese or chromium phosphate. The method increases the adhesion of powder paint to the surface of the car several times.
  • Washing and drying
    – removal of products from previous processing stages and final drying of the part.

Primer phase

So, the tire is dismantled, now it’s time for the primer. It should be noted that the technology does not provide for this stage, but when painting car wheels, experts recommend implementing it. This contributes, according to them, to better adhesion and anti-corrosion resistance.

After the soil has dried, its surface is cleaned using fine-grained sandpaper. Epoxy-zinc and epoxy primers are commonly used.

Powder paint application

Further painting of car rims with your own hands in the video is carried out in a special chamber using a special spray applicator that works on the electrostatic principle. The charged powder is applied to the grounded part using compressed air.

Thanks to electrostatic voltage, the paint is further retained on the surface of the wheel. The method has proven itself well when painting alloy wheels; they look even better than new ones.

Polymerization process

The part, coated with polymer powder paint, is finally installed in a thermal cabinet in which the temperature is maintained at 190-220°C. Drying time is from 40 to 60 minutes. All professional cameras are equipped with an electronic control unit.

In a garage environment, you can construct a drying chamber with your own hands. For this, a box with insulation is assembled, where the role of a heater is assigned to ordinary heating elements. In order to organize air convection inside the chamber, you need to consider a simple system with a fan that is installed outside the cabinet.

How to paint stamped wheels

Stamped wheels are most popular as the main wheels for installing winter tires, which is why they bear the entire burden of operating a car in winter conditions. Before starting work, it is recommended to remove the tires, level the deformed areas, carry out alignment and roll them to the desired shape on the machine.

Stamped discs are mainly made from cold-rolled or hot-rolled steel using the hot stamping method; this technology requires the mandatory application of a protective coating. For stamped disks, any painting technology is acceptable, since the metal of the structure will not deform when heated to a temperature of 250-300 degrees when powder painted.

Stamped discs

A special feature of painting stamped discs is the preparation process, during which, after restoring the shape of the disc, it is necessary to:

  1. Thoroughly clean the corroded areas to bare metal, especially along the inner rim of the disc;

  2. Remove paint residues mechanically and additionally remove rust residues chemically (treat with rust remover);
  3. Wash, wipe with a clean dry cloth and dry the disc with a stream of hot air;

In preparation for painting:

  1. Install the wheel rim on the stand;
  2. Degrease (for example, with acetone) and dry the surface;
  3. Apply the primer in 2-3 passes and dry in a drying chamber at a temperature of 50-60 degrees;

  4. Apply a final coat of primer and allow to dry.

Painting with acrylic paint and liquid rubber is carried out using a similar technology - painting with a spray gun and from a can, first on the inside, and then on the front. The use of the powder method requires additional equipment - a spray gun for applying powder paint, an apparatus for electrostatic spraying, a drying chamber with the ability to maintain a temperature from 180 to 300 degrees, depending on the composition of the powder paint.

Acrylic paint or liquid rubber is applied in the following order:

  1. At the stand, the results of the primer are inspected, flaws are removed and the entire surface is degreased again;
  2. From a distance of 50-60 cm, all areas are painted with 2-3 passes of a spray gun or spray bottle - first the side surface, the inner surface and then the front surface of the disk;
  3. The stand is placed in a drying chamber for 24-36 hours until completely dry.

Painting a stamped disc

Varnishing is carried out in 2 layers, provided that the surface is completely dry.

Required Tools

This procedure requires certain materials and tools:

  1. When removing the old layer, you need sandpaper of different sizes.
  2. Professional aerosol paint for rims.
  3. Primer, putty, masking tape.
  4. Special varnish for fixing the coating of discs.
  5. Solvent or degreaser.
  6. A variety of cleaning products, a respirator and gloves.

These are the simplest materials that can be obtained in specialty stores and regular supermarkets.

Note: When choosing materials, you should select products from the same line.

If you plan to get down to business professionally, you need the following tools:

  1. Spray gun, for large volumes of work and high-quality processing. But, spray paint also allows you to paint the surface of the disc well.
  2. A sander with a metal attachment can remove corrosion and instantly sand off old paint.
  3. For professionals in this field, they often require not only a construction or regular hair dryer, but also a “gun” to quickly dry the coating.

Equipment and materials needed for painting

For quality work, the following materials are required:

  • specialized paint for rims;
  • primer;
  • special varnish;
  • sandpaper with different grain sizes;
  • acetone or solvent;
  • putty;
  • gloves and respirator.

If you have all the necessary materials and equipment, the work will not take much time

In addition to the right materials, you also need to acquire the necessary tools:

  1. A compressor and a spray gun, which allow you to make painting better (in fairness, it is worth noting that paint in cans also allows you to achieve good painting results).
  2. A grinder or electric drill with a grinding attachment, with which you can quickly and easily get rid of old coating and remove traces of corrosion.
  3. A heat gun, a hair dryer or a regular hair dryer are necessary to speed up the drying process of the paint.

If you have all the necessary equipment and materials, the work will not take much time and effort.

How to paint car rims?

There is a wide range of paints on the market that differ in composition, durability, and aesthetic characteristics.

  • Nitro enamels dry quickly, are inexpensive, but require 15-20 layers and intermediate processing.
  • Alkyd enamels are easy to apply and dry quickly in air. The advantage is the low cost, the formation of a film that prevents the formation of smudges. Disadvantages: low quality and fragility.
  • Acrylic paints are popular for body repairs. They apply well, have high decorative characteristics, and protect the surface. The material is suitable for natural drying and polymerization during heat treatment. When varnishing you can achieve a metallic effect.
  • Powder compositions are rarely used for self-painting and require the use of special equipment. The result is a durable, aesthetically attractive coating.
  • Liquid rubber has a complex application technology, is not a paint, and is a durable coating with an original appearance.

Automotive enthusiasts prefer acrylic paints. They are easy to use, durable and provide an attractive appearance.

Many people think about spray painting wheels. The canister is convenient because you don’t need a gun, which is problematic to use. The paint is supplied under the same pressure. Shake before use to bring the mixture to the desired consistency.

To paint car rims with a spray can, it is worth considering that not all of them are of decent quality, you need to choose products from well-known manufacturers. They spray evenly, without drips.

However, an aerosol cannot provide a high-quality torch; this is only possible with a professional pistol. To paint four discs you will need a lot of spray cans, and the result is not guaranteed; skill is required.

Required tools and equipment:

  • For work, a grinder is used, which has low adjustable speed. An electric drill with attachments will also work. The tool kit includes a gun, compressor, spatulas.
  • Consumables - sandpaper with different grains, putty, solvent, primer, paint and varnish.

Briefly the process is as follows. When painting, you should remove the rubber, but you can avoid the expensive service if you cover it. The wheel is pasted over, the old paint is removed, and degreased. Dents and irregularities are filled with putty and sanded until a smooth surface is achieved. Paint cannot hide flaws; it only highlights them. Apply the first layer of primer (filler). Use it to remove sandpaper marks on putty discs. The surface is covered with finishing primer. After the primer has dried, apply the first coat of paint (it is better to do two layers). Depending on the instructions for the paint, varnish is used. When smudges appear, they are cut off, ground and polished.

When and why should you paint alloy wheels?

As it may seem, alloy wheels do not require maintenance. In fact, this is far from the case. First of all, they need to be regularly removed from dirt, washed and cleaned. At the same time, you should not use aggressive chemicals when washing, so as not to damage the protective varnish coating.

Further, in winter, varnish and paint are destroyed from the aggressive effects of salt and reagents. Also, flying stones and mechanical damage create microcracks in the protective coating. Then chips and other defects appear. The salt and chemicals that get there from the roads, already under the paint and varnish coating, actively destroy the paintwork and the disc material itself. As a result, large-scale paint peeling occurs.

To increase the service life of alloy wheels, painting is required at a minimum. This allows the protective coating to be restored. If the disc is severely damaged, a comprehensive restoration is needed, including repair of alloy discs.

How to paint wheels

To paint cast wheels (stamped ones can be painted in a similar way), you need to strictly adhere to the technological process. As for materials, you need:

  • wheel paint and primer;
  • varnish and sandpaper;
  • solvents and putty;

You should also prepare rags, gloves, a mask or respirator, etc. in advance. By the way, when choosing paints and varnishes, it is optimal to purchase varnish, paint and primer from one manufacturer.

As you can see, if the task is simply to tint the wheels, then it will be enough to clean the surface and paint it with a spray can. With the right approach, you can get a good result. If you have experience in painting work, then you should not limit yourself to surface treatment.

In other words, it is recommended to completely paint alloy wheels, since only in this case can we talk about the durability of the new coating. For high-quality paint application, it is better to use a compressor and a spray gun.

You also need a drill with attachments to remove the old coating and remove corrosion. Separately, you can sandblast the discs, which will save time and completely remove dirt, paint residues, rust, etc. from the discs.

To dry the discs faster, you need at least a household hair dryer, although it is better to immediately prepare a construction hair dryer or use a heat gun. You also need to make a special hanger for the disc in order to paint and dry it. This type of suspension is made of wire.

  • Having prepared the materials and equipment, you can proceed to the painting itself. The general process begins with preparing the wheels for painting. To do this, you need to remove the tires from the rims, then wash the rims (you can use car shampoo or active household detergents). Now you need to completely remove dirt, bitumen, and rust.
  • Next, you need to troubleshoot the disc, within which chips, scratches, blistering paint and other problem areas should be noted. If there are cracks, the discs need to be repaired (boiled) and rolled if necessary. This can be done in a professional workshop.
  • Then, in an accessible way, the old paintwork is mechanically removed, corrosion (including under-film corrosion) is removed. Afterwards you need to degrease the surface with a solvent. Severe defects (chips, scratches) must be removed using putty. When the material has dried, you need to sand it. If necessary, the putty is applied in several layers to obtain the desired result.
  • Next, the disc is degreased again and can be mounted on a suspension. Now you can proceed to applying the primer. The primer is applied in 2 or 3 layers (each layer is dried). To speed up drying, use a hair dryer or other devices.
  • Now you can apply paint, which is sprayed from 45-50 cm, you also need to apply at least a couple of layers (preferably 3). Each layer must dry well. When painting, you need to carefully paint hard-to-reach areas (corners, edges, etc.).
  • After waiting for the paint to dry, you can proceed to applying varnish. Varnish is applied to discs in the same way as paint. The only thing is that you can apply a couple of layers. This is quite enough for protection and shine. Now the varnish needs to be dried; it will completely cure in 48-72 hours. The disks are now ready for use.

Painting stamps

You can start painting only after the primer layer has completely dried. To ensure that the paint applies evenly, it is recommended to heat the surface to be painted with a hair dryer. For best quality, you need to apply several layers of paint, and each of them needs a certain time to dry completely.

Apply paint to the stamped disc

At the final stage, the painted surface is coated with varnish. It should also be applied in several layers - their number should not be less than two. The time required for the varnish to dry completely is usually indicated on its packaging.

Features of high-quality painting of alloy wheels

Each work has nuances that are reflected in the final result. Painting alloy wheels will be no exception.

To ensure that the car owner’s efforts are not in vain, the following recommendations must be followed.

  • Some motorists do not pay enough attention to preparatory operations. As a result, the painted surface of the disc may peel off or bulges and bubbles may appear. You'll have to start all the work over again.
  • Blistering of the surface can also occur due to incomplete drying of the previous layer of primer or paint. It is better to spend more time drying than to subsequently remove the paint layer.
  • When painting a disc on the street or in an open garage, you need to monitor the vagaries of the weather. Dry and windy weather is good for completely drying painted parts, but is not suitable for applying paints. Traces of dust and sand will spoil the appearance of the alloy wheel.
  • Before painting discs, the room must be cleared of sand, dust, abrasive, etc. Then a powerful air flow from the compressor will not lift small particles from the floor that fall on the painted surface.
  • In the warm season, annoying insects can add unpleasant troubles. If they come into contact with fresh paint, no action should be taken. It may be possible to remove the defect by polishing the surface after drying.
  • When painting, there is no need to rush and try to cover the surface with one layer. From such a desire, streaks most often appear that spoil the appearance. The drip can be removed only after the material has completely dried and hardened.

To summarize, we note that putting the appearance of alloy wheels in order is possible for every car owner who loves his vehicle. To do this, you need to carve out a few days for work and carry out all the described activities step by step. Then the logical result of the work will be alloy wheels sparkling in the sun, and your deep moral satisfaction.

Maybe powder and sandblasting?

The question is logical, a scratched cast wheel can be deformed, and significantly so, before you paint it, you need to determine its serviceability. Moreover, this is quite simple to do if there are a few points:

  • We check the surfaces from above and below for cracks; if there are none, there is a high probability that it is “alive”
  • We check for broken parts; they should not be on the rims of the disc.
  • Checking for jams. If the disk is “beaten”, then there may be severe jams, this is also bad, because if you try to straighten them, the surface may simply burst
  • We are looking for places of adhesions. The thing is that now the disks can be soldered, you shouldn’t do this, I advise you to use this option in the spare wheel, or on the edge on the rear wheel. Nevertheless, the structure is disrupted, and the surface can collapse at any moment
  • Balancing. You can check the balancing, again a wrinkled or broken disk will show bad results, if the deviation is not so great, this is normal

After checking, you can make a decision; if everything is fine, there are no cracks or breaks, you can start painting.

There are professional repainting systems, that is, companies remove the old paint using sandblasting, and then apply powder paint, varnish, etc.

But this is not our method, because doing it yourself, this way is quite problematic! And if you give it to someone, the cost will be about 10,000 - 12,000 rubles per set. It all depends on the diameter of your disk.

Therefore, he will look for another method of painting, with his own hands, first we decide on the materials.

How can you paint car stampings?

Almost no one remembers the times when the need to paint stamped wheels was an almost insurmountable problem. Today, in addition to traditional ones, there are a variety of options for painting wheels. You can do this using:

  1. Powder paints. They allow you to create a reliable paint coating. The paint must be applied at a temperature not lower than 200°C. And for this you must use a special thermal chamber.
  2. Liquid rubber. The demand for liquid rubber is constantly growing. Essentially, it is a mastic containing rubber, to which a certain dye has been added. The convenience of this option is that the liquid rubber can be removed at any time.
  3. Acrylic enamel. This option is the simplest, since the paint is in spray cans. It is with their help that stamped discs are most often painted. Due to the fact that the paint is applied in several layers to the prepared surface, the coating can retain its appearance for two or even three years.
  4. Alkyd-melamine paints. The advantage of this option is the availability of a large assortment of colors. The paint is applied using a spray gun in several layers. The layers dry out very quickly. Distinctive features of the surface painted by this method are a high level of resistance to atmospheric agents and excellent light fastness.
