  • It is recommended to entrust this type of work to specialists who provide services in this field of activity. This is due to the fact that incorrectly carried out chip tuning can cause various problems with engine operation.
  • The technical condition of the internal combustion engine design largely determines whether chip tuning can be carried out. If the motor is in poor technical condition, then increasing the load causes rapid wear. Therefore, if the process in question is carried out correctly, a complete diagnosis is first performed.
  • As a rule, the automaker sets minimum power values, leaving a margin. If chip tuning has not been carried out previously, the programmer will be able to configure the engine to increase its power. If the modification in question has already been carried out previously, it will no longer be possible to carry it out again.

In general, we can say that chip tuning is carried out in many cases when it is necessary to increase engine power. However, in order to significantly increase traction, it is necessary to improve the geometry.

DIY methods for increasing engine power

The Niva car is not distinguished by hurricane dynamics and high maximum speed. Consequently, those who want to get more power and thrust from this machine have developed and tested various methods of engine tuning, differing in the difficulty of installation and use and the resulting result.

The ignition system is changing to electronic with a Hall sensor from more modern VAZ models. A motor with increased power will require the installation of a radiator with an increased cooling area. The described program allows you to remove up to 120 hp from a VAZ-2121 engine. When installing 2 Solex carburetors, it is possible to increase the power to 136 hp. 2.

Many specialized companies offer the installation of turbocharging for Niva and Chevrolet Niva cars based on the GARETT GT17 turbocharger. Installation cost is about 60,000 rubles. Device

The internal combustion engine was specially designed for the Niva and, in theory, refers to motors designed for cars with rear-wheel drive, installed in cars along its longitudinal axis. The design of the crankshaft is similar to that installed on the VAZ-2103 and has crank radii equal to forty millimeters.

To reduce vibrations, the shaft is designed with additional counterweights and journal diameters increased by 0.02 mm to reduce the gap between the liners and the journal, so that the oil layer is created at an optimal thickness and the dynamics of the shaft are improved. The upgraded shaft can be installed on the 2103 modification engine.

This engine has a new design of pistons with an oval recess in the bottom. The piston pin, 67 mm long, is fixed using retaining rings. The hole for the pin is shifted relative to the piston axis by 1.2 mm. Each piston weighs 347 grams, and to avoid imbalance, all four pistons are brought to the same weight.

The design of the connecting rods has also changed slightly - its length has become 136 mm, the diameter for the connecting rod journal is 47.8 mm, and for the piston pin - 22 mm. New bolts were installed in the connecting rod cover to increase the reliability and accuracy of assembly.

The cylinder head is similar in design to its predecessor (21011), but is not a copy. It is made lower by 1.8 mm, and its height is 111 mm, the combustion chamber has a volume of 30 cm3, dimensions 52×81 mm. The head was equipped with an updated camshaft with a modified shape of the pushers to increase the opening phase of the intake valves. In general, the valve mechanism is taken from the 2101 engine.

The timing drive is carried out using a chain with a damper and a tensioner with an enlarged shoe.

There is no point in writing about this for a long time because the Niva chip is useless, the atmospheric engine cannot be stirred up with a chip, and all the rave reviews are nothing more than an attempt to justify a waste of money, let’s move on.

How to cheaply increase the power of a VAZ 21213 engine

The question on the agenda: how to increase the power of a Niva engine without any special tricks? The first stage is to increase the piston stroke to 84 mm using a crankshaft from a VAZ 2130, 82 mm pistons with a piston pin offset of 2 mm and we already have 1.8 liters. The second stage is to bore the cylinders for an 84 mm piston, thus assembling the 1.9 engine for the field. To fully boost the VAZ 21213 engine, you need to add a more efficient carburetor, bore the cylinder head channels (how to do this is described HERE), the intake diameter is 33 mm and the exhaust diameter is 31 mm, it is advisable to use light connecting rods, in the end we will get about 100 hp. The third stage - we build a 2 liter motor. We buy on the market a tuning crankshaft with an 88mm stroke and 84mm pistons with a pin offset of 4mm. A complete modification of the VAZ 21213 engine will be completed after installing a Nuzhdin camshaft (or an analogue) with a lift of 11.2, a light flywheel, light connecting rods and a modified carburetor, all of which will give a total of about 110 hp.

From time to time on forums they raise the issue of installing a 2112 engine in a Niva; this is a rather difficult and pointless task, due to the fact that 16V engines love speed and are not well suited for an SUV. If you want speed, sell your car and buy a Priora. The Niva is not suitable for high speeds and its tuning should be aimed, first of all, at increasing traction at the bottom.

We use kit kits based on the PK-23-1 supercharger or analogues with a pressure of 0.5 bar, injectors from the 406 Volga engine, the piston remains factory, the output is more than 100 hp. The VAZ 21213 four-cylinder eight-valve petrol engine has a displacement of 1.7 liters. The power of the power unit is 81 horsepower with a torque of 125 Nm.

Engines 21213 in their latest generation were equipped with an injector and ran on high-octane 93 gasoline. The cast iron cylinder block ensured maximum strength for this power unit.

The use of numerous automatic engine control systems made it possible not only to change the traction performance of this engine, but also significantly improved fuel efficiency. Niva in suburban mode consumes 8.3 liters of gasoline per 100 kilometers when driving at cruising speed.

The Niva engine with an overhead camshaft is equipped with a chain drive, which significantly simplifies the service of this power unit. The chain drive does not require replacement of the tensioner or any adjustment during operation of the motor. We also note the presence of hydraulic compensators, which relieves the car owner of the need to carry out the procedure for adjusting the valve clearance. All maintenance work on this engine can be performed by the car owner himself, without contacting branded service stations.

Tuning options

When refining a Niva engine, a new crankshaft, cylinders and piston system are most often installed. As a result, the car receives excellent speed characteristics and cross-country ability.

There are two types of Niva engine tuning. The first includes chip tuning, and the second includes mechanical modification of the element. Chip tuning includes software upgrades, and is carried out only on new, fuel-injected SUVs. It includes flashing the control unit settings. It is performed by specialists quite quickly - within half an hour, but requires knowledge of software and additional electronic equipment.

Mechanical modifications are possible on any Niva, and this is the most popular type of tuning of a car’s power plant. With its help, you can significantly improve the technical characteristics of vehicles, and it is based on making some changes to the vehicle systems.

Installing a carburetor on a Niva

Until 1994, the Niva 2121 was equipped with Ozone carburetors, which still operate successfully to this day. Assessing all the positive and negative aspects of existing designs, AvtoVAZ began installing Solex 21073 carburetors on the Niva. According to numerous car enthusiasts, this mechanism is more economical than Ozone. The engine is characterized by better performance, but it becomes more difficult to configure, more capricious to the quality of gasoline and oil vapors penetrating from the crankcase.

You can install or replace the carburetor yourself using standard tools. First, you need to dismantle the air filter, loosen the fuel line clamp and carefully remove it from the fitting, draining the gasoline in the fuel line into a prepared container. Then you should loosen the clamps and remove all pipes connecting to the carburetor:

  • draining fuel into the fuel tank;
  • carburetor heating unit;
  • vacuum regulator of the ignition distributor;
  • exhaust gas recirculation systems;
  • suction of crankcase gases.

By removing all the electrical connectors, you can remove the throttle linkages and the choke control cable. Having disconnected all external communications from the carburetor, it is necessary to unscrew the nuts securing it to the intake manifold. Then you can carefully dismantle the mechanism. Installing a new carburetor is performed in the reverse order.

Geometry improvement work

Due to the low engine efficiency and low wear resistance, mechanical tuning of the Niva 4x4 engine is almost mandatory. Such work is called work to change the geometry of the power plant. You should start modifying the power plant by upgrading the carburetor. We do the following:

  1. We change jets with an indicator of 1 kam to a jet with an indicator of 2 kam;
  2. Renewing the accelerator pump nozzle.

If there is dirt or carbon deposits in the carburetor, we clean it manually. To do this we need a rag, gasoline and physical strength. If the dirt is very stubborn, a high-pressure cleaner or other device designed for washing the car will help. You can also use special “baths” to remove dried dirt from parts. In this way, the fuel supply to the gas distribution mechanism can be significantly improved.

Basic Solex malfunctions and methods for eliminating them

Before looking for problems with the device, you need to make sure that the ignition system is working flawlessly and is adjusted correctly. You also need to check whether the timing belt is functioning correctly, since malfunctions in the operation of this mechanism can also cause malfunctions in the carburetor.

Refinement of the gas distribution mechanism

After replacing the jets and accelerator pump, you can proceed to the second stage of tuning the VAZ-2121 engine. It includes modification of the gas distribution mechanism (GRM), namely, an increase in the diameter of the valves with their subsequent sealing. Such tuning of the Niva 2121 engine will increase the power of the power plant by almost ten percent.

It makes sense to replace the pusher (with a new one with a diameter of at least 1 mm) during the modification of the Niva engine. Work is being done to increase the pusher wells of the intake and exhaust channels. The result of such modification will be especially good for the Niva 4x4.

Subsequent work concerns the replacement of injectors and the control unit itself. Tuning the VAZ-2121 engine will be incomplete unless the standard crankshaft is replaced with an advanced modification, which will significantly increase the power of the power plant. This is due to the increase in piston stroke. It is also recommended to replace the piston rings with new ones. When replacing the crankshaft, boring should be done, as this will provide an additional opportunity to make the engine more powerful. However, be prepared for the fact that fuel consumption will also increase.

The most common engine failures

ICE 21213 has typical problems of VAZ engines:

  • increased oil consumption due to carbon deposits on valves and cylinders;
  • the appearance of vibrations at a speed of 90 km/h. The cause is a damaged head gasket or an unadjusted carburetor;
  • when the timing chain is pulled, the valve bends;
  • Excessive noise due to a broken timing chain tensioner or timing chain tensioner shoe, pump bearing creaking, or unadjusted thermal clearances;
  • Overheating of the unit is caused by a faulty thermostat, a clogged radiator, or prolonged operation at high speeds. Due to the design features of the BC, the thickness of the coolant layer does not provide sufficient cooling, so it is necessary to operate the unit moderately. Increased engine temperature leads to cracking of the cylinder head.

The disadvantages of the 21213 engine include repair features. If the wear of the cylinders exceeds 0.15 mm, then boring is permissible only for the repair dimensions of the pistons, increased by 0.4 and 0.8 mm from the nominal value. Regrinding of the crankshaft journals is possible with a diameter reduction of 0.25; 0.5; 0.75 and 1 mm. The limitation is due to the repair dimensions of the liners. If the axial clearance of the crankshaft increases by more than 0.35 mm, the part must be replaced.

Oil pump work

Lubricant supplied through the oil pump extends engine life. To improve the performance of the oil pump when tuning the Niva engine, you need to take another pump and cut off part of the housing with the parting plane from it. The thickness of this “pancake” should be about 11 cm. Using milling, cut off the excess and leave a thickness of 10 mm.

Next, do the following to remove chamfers on the edges of the teeth:

  1. We compress, that is, remove, the drive gears.
  2. We trim one of the gears by 0.75 mm on each side.
  3. We cut the second gear to 11.5 mm (after trimming).
  4. We repeat the operation with the remaining gears (driven).

Let's start working on the body. To do this we do the following:

  1. We release the driven gear axis from the housing.
  2. We form a longer axis from the drive roller.
  3. We insert the resulting axle into the body.
  4. We press the narrow gear onto the second drive shaft.
  5. Press on the wide gear.
  6. We fix the wide driven gear in the housing.
  7. We install a narrow gear into the housing.

This sequence will prevent the gears from turning relative to each other. You can also improve the oil receiver of the Vase by cutting it a centimeter from the bottom. After this, we adjust the end gap and connect the entire structure with bolts.

Instructions for adjusting the carburetor

Solex is a fairly reliable device, but it is advisable to carry out the necessary adjustments every six months of vehicle operation in order to optimize engine performance and save gasoline. These include: adjusting the quality of the fuel mixture, its level in the float chamber and the number of idle speeds.

Before carrying out any calibration work or troubleshooting, it is advisable to clean the carburetor of dust, oil and other contaminants. It is more convenient to do this with the air filter removed.

When adjusting the Solex carburetor installed on the Niva, you need to put the gearshift knob in the neutral position, start the engine and let it run for about five minutes. This will allow the fuel pump to fill the chamber. Then you should remove the fuel hose from the carburetor, after turning off the ignition. To prevent the gasoline remaining in the fuel line from leaking onto the engine, prepare in advance a container into which it can be drained. After this, dismantle the choke control cable and remove the screws securing the carburetor cover to its body. When removing the cover, you need to be extremely careful not to damage the gasket and fastenings of the floats.

Having gained access to the float chamber, it is necessary to measure the fuel level. It is convenient to do this with a caliper with a depth gauge. The distance from the edge of the chamber to the edge of the fuel should be 24-25 millimeters. If these values ​​do not correspond, you should bend the tongue on the float axis in the desired direction, put the cap in place, start the engine, and then repeat the procedure of removing the cap and measuring the fuel level.

The idle speed setting is carried out on a warm engine. First, use a flat-head screwdriver to tighten the mixture quality screw located on the base of the carburetor until it stops. It has a left-hand thread, so it should be screwed counterclockwise. Then you need to unscrew it five turns and start the engine. Having removed the choke (air damper), we make minimum but stable engine speeds by rotating the fuel supply amount screw. Then, slowly turning the quality screw, you need to achieve unstable operation of the motor, and after that, unscrew the quality screw one and a half turns. This is enough to restore stable operation. You can set the recommended rpm (850-900) using the quantity screw.

We will improve the exhaust system

Since the exhaust system can increase the power and efficiency of the engine, tuning the VAZ-2121 engine includes the installation of modern exhaust and intake manifolds.

With their help, the process of air supply and exhaust gas removal will be optimized, and the efficiency of the power plant will become higher. To increase engine power, it makes sense to install a resonator from the muffler. With it, exhaust gas removal improves, and the running engine acquires a beautiful bass sound.

Tuning the VAZ (Niva) engine also includes moving the muffler further to the rear axle, when almost the entire exhaust system is dismantled. In this case, the resonator can be installed from any car, for example, from a Moskvich.

Installing a turbine is not a complex tuning solution, since the turbine itself has a fairly simple structure. The absence of interaction between the crankshaft and the turbine shaft also increases the efficiency of the power plant.
