Let's start with Captur. Yes, indeed, in comparison with Duster, the model has changed radically. The model has changed, but the problems remain. Undoubtedly, a budget crossover and oak plastic are like yin and yang, but not to the same extent. Further more. Not only did they decide in France that it is not necessary to make full-fledged handles, you can, like on Logan, make hooks that you have to pull on almost breaking your fingernails, but they also made huge, simply gigantic front pillars, probably specifically for the driver fidgeted in the seat, because this is also not the strongest side of the model, like the Duster, more on that later. The trunk volume, by the way, is a maximum of 1200 liters.
Here is the usual minimalism. Initially, the crossover was positioned as an SUV, then there was no such class as a “crossover”. So, when Duster first entered the market, it fully satisfied the needs of an “SUV”; it did not necessarily have any design. But times are simply different now, and they require a reverent attitude towards the driver and passengers, and Duster does not think about either one or the other. A sort of Land Rover, only made of cheap plastic. Here you can load 1636 liters of payload. As for the wheelbase, both Frenchmen have it at 2.67 meters. I must say, not a little.
After the restyling, the Lifan X60 didn’t change much in the interior, but it would have been worth it. If you don’t know, then you may not pay attention to the welder’s mask in the center, but now, after you read this, this thought will most likely not leave your head. Everything is simple and calm here. Perhaps it even looks good. The back seat is quite spacious, a maximum of 1356 liters will fit into the trunk, the base is exactly 2.6 meters.
Next comes the Hyundai Creta. Koreans in their own style. Here too they followed the path of conservatism, which was mentioned above, they simply decided to follow the well-trodden path. And it was trampled by Solaris, which the people really liked. That’s why there was the IX35 with its excellent materials, and now its smaller copy. A nice bonus is that on the one hand, style is good, but on the other hand, almost all the company’s models are becoming similar to each other, it is becoming more and more difficult to distinguish them, and individuality is an important element of the car’s popularity.
Again, the ergonomics are excellent, but the materials let us down again. The advertising is doing its job, the crossover has really become popular, however, the plastic is simply disgusting. Someone once said that you should not touch plastic where it is not necessary. So now, don't touch anything at all? The owner buys a car in order to drive it, to enjoy it, and not to ask what can and cannot be done with it. The trunk volume is 1280 liters, the base is 2.59 meters. It has already been mentioned that Creta is the shortest on our list.
Well, the most relish in the cabin is the Tiggo 5. The crossover does not look as attractive from the outside as it does from the inside. The materials here are of fairly high quality, the plastic even dents a little, the sound insulation is good, and in the same Creta they saved a lot on this. Well, the design. First of all, people buy with their eyes. So Chery Tiggo 5 is the undisputed leader in this regard, leaving behind eminent competitors. Moreover, there are comfortable seats, full door handles, a fun interior and many niches for small things. It’s as if the Chinese drove it for six months and added what was missing. The wheelbase is also 2.6 meters, the trunk capacity with the second row folded is 1310 liters.
Mazda CX-5
Having a million rubles, it’s worth trying to find a pre-restyling model of this all-wheel drive crossover with a two-liter engine. The option with a 2.5-liter power unit is unlikely to fit into our budget, unless it’s front-wheel drive. The car is modern, beautiful, reliable, and very well equipped technically. The only unpleasant thing is that the CX-5 crossover is in high demand among car thieves.

In the case of the Q5, you shouldn’t choose the most powerful versions, since you probably didn’t drive such cars in a quiet and measured mode, but tried to squeeze the maximum out of the engine. Even after 2-3 years, the engine is easily killed at this rate. Then major repairs or superficial restoration, just to sell the car.
Having a wealth of experience or a good auto selection assistant at your disposal, you can find a lively and good version of the Q5 from Audi. And then the car will fully justify its cost. But it is important to understand the risk.
BMW X3
The list of premium models is completed by a good compact crossover from the Bavarian automaker BMW. Having about a million rubles at your disposal, you should count on buying an X3 in good condition and with real mileage, model 2010-2012.
There are no special complaints about the car, so it is deservedly included in the top priority premium crossovers from the used category at a price of up to 1,000,000 rubles. But any X3 that has traveled more than 100-130 thousand kilometers will require more and more attention every year. The car is decent, but expensive to maintain and maintain. It is important to select high-quality spare parts and use the best consumables in order to keep the German crossover in excellent condition and with appropriate performance characteristics.
Sometimes it’s better to sacrifice the equipment and choose the average content, but buy the most recent BMW X3. Look carefully at the mileage. From the list of priority options, immediately exclude the crossover in the M package. It's too much of a risk to run into a bat, repaired, and twisted machine.
Nissan Qashqai

Potential buyers should carefully consider whether to go to the secondary market for Quashqai. The thing is that the car initially belongs to the mid-budget models, and a brand new Quashqai can be purchased for 1.2-1.4 million rubles through an official dealer.
Chery Tiggo 4
This is perhaps our most popular Chinese compact crossover, especially since you can buy a new car for the 2021 model year for a million rubles. Despite its modest dimensions, the SUV looks solid. At the front, many elements have appeared that make the car recognizable - these are headlights of a complex configuration, and a lot of chrome, designed to emphasize the premium quality of the model.
The interior of the compact SUV Tiggo 4 also meets modern standards: finishing materials are of decent quality, the overall style is High-Tech, and ergonomics are at a high level. A new multimedia system has appeared, equipped with a nine-inch screen with the ability to access the Internet and media files of various formats. There is only one engine, a 122-horsepower 2.0-liter naturally-aspirated power unit mated to a CVT. The lack of all-wheel drive has almost no effect on the off-road characteristics of the SUV; ground clearance of 16 cm and a solid 25-centimeter front overhang allow the Chinese crossover to overcome water obstacles up to 60 cm deep. Driving on rough terrain will also not cause any problems.
The basic Comfort package costs 860 thousand rubles, it includes heated/electrically adjustable side mirrors, 17-inch alloy wheels, cruise control, air conditioning, roof rails, heated seats, full power accessories, a multifunction steering wheel, and the already mentioned multimedia system. The second Luxury package, which is also the top-end, costs 955 thousand rubles, and for this money you will get one-inch larger wheels, leather interior, push-button engine start, a tire pressure monitoring function, several assistants, two airbags, a rearview camera and a row of other "chips". In a word, very decent equipment. And this is the first place in our ranking of new crossovers for a million rubles.
Technical characteristics of modern crossovers
Now comes the fun part. This will be a bit confusing, so read carefully. First of all, neither Lifan nor Chery is offered with all-wheel drive, only front-wheel drive. A Creta with all-wheel drive only at maximum speed, it costs 1.16 million, which does not fall within our scope, so we also consider the Creta to be front-wheel drive. We’ll also add Captur there, for the same reason.
Now about the engines. The bet on Creta is 1.6, 123 horses. An excellent motor that has proven itself well on a couple of generations of Solaris, on the Ai30, there are no complaints about it. But let’s be honest, this engine is rather weak for an automatic, it has only 150 Nm of torque. This is an option exclusively for the city. There is also a two-room apartment, but it is more than a million.
Let's do the same calculations for Captur. By simple calculations we get 11 kilograms per horsepower. This is quite a lot, so Kaptur is also an option for the city. He also has a two-room apartment, but it is also more expensive than a million. And yes, only it has all-wheel drive, well, at least it’s something.
Now for the Chinese. They do not have their own engine, only Japanese ones, under license. Cherry is equipped with 1AZ-FSE, which is derated to 135 horses. I must admit, the engine is simply excellent, but it is assembled by the Chinese, this point is worth taking into account. But this is the only engine that drives great in combination with front-wheel drive.
The situation with Lifan is approximately the same, but if the first Chinese took an engine from the 2000s, the second from the 90s. The basis for this unit was the 7A-FE, with a volume of 1.8 liters. That one produced up to 120 horses, the Chinese removed 128. Also with front-wheel drive, it also drives well, it is also offered with either a manual or a CVT.
Well, the only all-wheel drive option on our list. It is offered as a base with the same 114-horsepower engine as the Captur. But there is a difference, and a very significant one. First of all, the Duster is 130 kilograms heavier, and even with all-wheel drive. And if the Kaptur is offered with a CVT, then for the Duster with the same engine there is only a manual transmission. But that is not all.
The fact is that a Duster can also be purchased for up to a million with a 1.5-liter diesel engine with 109 horses. Also all-wheel drive, a torque of 240 Nm does its job, but also only with mechanics.
But that's not all. The maximum, top-end configuration with all-wheel drive and a gasoline kopeck piece also costs a million rubles. This means that 143 horses, all-wheel drive, an automatic transmission and the maximum configuration with a leather interior (more on that later) are tearing competitors to shreds.
Nissan Terrano
Appearing in Russia in 2014, the updated Terrano was strikingly different from its predecessors. The Japanese finally decided to move away from the appearance of the Pathfinder, an SUV that was successfully sold for two decades and became the prototype of the first two generations of the Terrano crossover.
The new product shares the same platform with the Duster, and therefore the cars are similar in many ways. But not externally or interiorly – here the advantage is clearly not on the Frenchman’s side.
The interior has common features, but the dashboard and air ducts are different; one feels a commitment to a strict style, which is contraindicated for the “French”. The line of engines is represented by two power units, a junior 114-horsepower 1.6-liter engine and a senior two-liter engine with a capacity of 143 horsepower. In terms of equipment, the Terrano is noticeably ahead.
The basic package costs from 931 thousand rubles and includes front electric windows, an audio system with four speakers, halogen optics with headlight range control, air conditioning, adjustable front seats, front airbags, a central control socket, ABS/EBD/ESP. The Elegance package can be purchased for 975 thousand rubles, and it adds heated front seats and windshield, remote engine start, side airbags, route booking, foglights, roof rails. The cost of a front-wheel drive crossover of older trim levels is beyond 1,000,000 rubles.
