How to easily change the fuel pump on a second generation Ford Focus

On the Ford Focus 2 (Ford Focus II) model, malfunctions of the fuel pump lead to jerking, failures during acceleration, difficulty starting and unstable operation of the power unit. If the Ford Focus 2 fuel pump completely fails, the result is a complete engine stop.

In such a situation, the fuel pump must be removed, repaired or replaced. In order to replace the Focus 2 fuel pump, you must:

  • completely remove the fuel tank (official replacement method);
  • cut out the hatch in the car body yourself;

Moreover, each of these methods can be implemented independently. The main thing is to take into account the basic rules and recommendations for replacement. Read more in our article.

Regulations for replacing the fuel filter Ford Focus 2

The coarse filter on a FF-2 car with an injection internal combustion engine is located in the fuel pump itself; it is a mesh built into the body (flask). This filter is considered non-removable (disposable), and according to factory conditions it must be replaced as a whole complete with the pump. The factory-established schedule for replacing the submersible filter (in the pump) is every 120 thousand km, and the external (remote) filter is every 60 thousand km.

On diesel engines, the FTO is located very conveniently; it is located on top, behind the valve cover of the internal combustion engine. The filter element itself is made of paper; on cars operated in Russia, it is recommended to change it every 25-30 thousand km.

How often to change the fuel pump and which ones to install

The manufacturer does not indicate the exact service life of fuel pumps, so they need to be changed depending on their performance. Most often, Focus owners began to have problems with the operation of the fuel pump after a mileage of 80 to 130 thousand km. Dealers, for example, recommend replacing every 60 thousand km.

It is better to replace it with original fuel pumps that are made in the USA. Article numbers of original products - 1234552, 1254193, 1305354, 1309160, 1312617, 1529595. Cost ranges from 3,000 to 5,000 rubles.

You can also install the following analogues:

  • Bosch (0986580412) - 5,900 rub.
  • Febi (34604) — 13,500 rub.
  • ERA - Messmer (775238) - 9,000 rub.

To save money, you can replace the Ford Focus fuel pump with a VAZ one (0 580 453 453). This cheap pump is installed mainly on the VAZ 2110. These products have high pressure, but the performance is 2 times lower. As a result, VAZ pumps on Focuses overheat faster.

How much does it cost to replace a fuel pump on a Ford Focus 2?

The average cost of pump replacement services at a service station ranges from 3,200 to 4,500 rubles. (with tank removal). The procedure is rarely performed without removing it, but its price can be 2 times less.

In addition, the fuel filter also needs to be changed, which costs at least another 500 rubles. for work.

On Ford Focus 2, the filter is installed in the fuel module. Commonly purchased options are the following filters:

  • LYNXauto (LF-964M) — 1400 rub.
  • JS Asakashi (FS 25004) - 1600 rub.

You can also simply replace the filter mesh with the version from Toyota (2321774021) - from 160 to 570 rubles.

How to remove the fuel pump on a Ford Focus 2

Removal of the gas tank and subsequent dismantling of the Ford Focus 2 fuel pump should be carried out in an inspection pit or on an overpass. Be sure to use protective gloves and protective clothing. Also important is the unimpeded access of oxygen to the room where the gasoline pump will be replaced, since toxic gasoline vapors will be released during the work.

Removing the fuel pump Ford Focus 2:

  • First remove the thermal protection and filter tube (absorber)
  • Unscrew the fastening bolts through the trunk to gain access to the gas tank hatch
  • Disconnect the supply and return hoses going to the pump, as well as the fuel pump sensor terminals
  • Crank the starter and start the car engine
  • Leave the engine running until the vehicle stalls (i.e. the fuel system is empty)
  • To facilitate the task of subsequent assembly, all fittings and hoses should be numbered during work
  • Unscrew the fuel pump from the fuel tank (while handling the seal ring carefully, as this part is quite fragile)
  • When removing the fuel pump, you should check the hoses and other components of the fuel system for integrity.
  • If a breakdown is detected on any of the components of the fuel supply system, the spare part should be replaced
  • Pull out the fuel pump and place it on a rag or cardboard prepared in advance.

Inserting a new Ford Focus 2 fuel pump is carried out in the reverse order. At the last stage of assembly, you should crank the starter a little in order to pump fuel into the system. At the same time, you can check the structure for leaks and other defects.

Also, after reinstalling the fuel pump, it is recommended to check your car in various modes. To do this, you need to drive at high speed along the highway and on an inclined plane.

The cost of replacing a Ford Focus 2 fuel pump (pre-restyling models and Focus 2 restyling), if the work is carried out in a service center, will range from 3 to 5 thousand rubles (Moscow area). The cost of replacement depends on the region and largely on the part being installed. The advantage of replacing it in a specialized service is a guarantee of the quality of the work performed and the opportunity to contact the repairman free of charge if a malfunction occurs with the repaired part of the car.

Hatch for fuel pump Ford Focus 2

Ford engineers do not provide for removing the fuel pump directly from the inside of the car. Therefore, to remove the fuel pump, you need to remove the tank, and this procedure takes a lot of time and is very inconvenient to do under road conditions (for example, if there are problems with the fuel pump on the highway). For this reason, some car owners make a hatch to remove the fuel pump.

It is not difficult to cut out the hatch for the Ford Focus 2 fuel pump. To do this, you need to cut a hole of the appropriate diameter in the seat, lay it around the perimeter with a rubber seal, cut out a metal cover to cover the resulting hole and screw it to the base.

Replacing the fine and coarse filter of the fuel pump in a Ford Focus 2

A blower or gas-resistant hose is suitable for draining fuel. Thoroughly clean the surface of the gas tank from dirt. Unscrew the plastic pressure ring.

The fuel cup can now be removed from the tank. The installation procedure for a new pump has its own subtleties.

Removing and disassembling the fuel module Ford Focus 2

There is an arrow on its body. It should be combined with the mark on the tank. When tightening the clamp ring, remember that it is plastic. The module must be firmly fixed, but it is better not to use excessive force. Is it possible not to take it off? To replace the fuel pump without removing the tank, you will need to make a hole in the floor under the rear seat.

To ensure everything turns out neatly, use a template. You need to cut the hole along the drawn line.

Using a grinder or tin snips, cut out a circle. Carefully remove the terminal connection and pipes. Cover the ends of the fuel line with a rag. Using a wooden block, tear off the retaining ring and unscrew completely.

Remove the O-ring from the neck of the fuel tank. Using a screwdriver, press the lock of the fuel level indicator sensor... ...and slide the sensor along the guides of the fuel module housing.

Disconnect the wire ends of the fuel level indicator sensor from the terminals on the top cover of the module and remove the sensor. Use a screwdriver to press out the four fasteners on the fuel module body... ...and remove the bottom cover of the module. We take out the fuel Ford Focus 2, how to disassemble the fuel pump from the fuel module. Use a screwdriver to press the latch... ...and, having disconnected the block of wires from the electric motor of the fuel pump, remove it.

I have a normal small hydraulic jack. In raising the car, it is practically useless because it has a too short stock, but in such works it is very convenient. I put him under the tank. Twisted 3 bolts V-shaped tank mounting, he seemed to move. He began to lower the jack, the tank Ford Focus 2 how to disassemble the fuel pump a little and hunger, as if it was clinging to something.

Looked, really, did not disconnect another tube marked in the photo above This tube is connected to the tank not from the edge, but closer to the middle, so you will not disconnect it until the tank goes down some distance.

This is where the first problem arose. I lower the tank - it does not fall. I looked at Ford Focus 2 how to disassemble the fuel pump the other side, and he rested his edge on the floor, the pit was narrow! That is why it is more convenient to shoot it on a lift or Ford Focus 2 how to disassemble the fuel pump.

And I had to get out from under the car actually several times during the evening to jack up and lift it in order to make room for removing the tank. After raising the back of the machine, it became possible to lower the tank even lower. Zoom Here in this narrow space I had to pick up the phone and the connector Now it became clear where the rubber tube is connected to the tank.

Causes and symptoms of problems

If there are disturbances in the operation of the oxygen sensor, this affects the performance of the power plant. Failures are always accompanied by a decrease in the quality of the resulting fuel mixture.

Common reasons:

  • mechanical damage appears, depressurization is possible due to incorrect operation or off-road driving;
  • problems and power outages develop;
  • thermal overloads, overheating resulting from improper operation of the ignition;
  • severe pollution due to the use of fuel, which contains many additives that increase the octane number;
  • air and exhaust gases may enter the system.

Typically, the probe fails gradually, which allows the problem to be identified in time.

Signs appear in sequence:

  1. An unstable idle appears. The reason is that at certain moments the signal is not generated. Fluctuations can be severe, over a wide range.
  2. The quality of the air-fuel mixture decreases. This is accompanied by the appearance of jerks and uncharacteristic pops in the operation of the power unit. The dynamics are getting worse.
  3. The corresponding light on the dashboard lights up, which is a signal to the owner.
  4. If the situation worsens, the device stops working when the engine is not warmed up.
  5. Power and responsiveness drop noticeably when you press the gas. Popping and jerking sounds appear more frequently. Engine overheating is possible.
  6. Fuel consumption increases, exhausts acquire a toxic odor.

In such a situation, you need to replace the lambda probe; signs of malfunction should not be ignored. On new car models, emergency mode is activated, which makes further movement impossible. This eliminates the development of more serious problems with the engine and costly restoration.

Fuel pump malfunctions Ford Focus 2

Fuel pump malfunctions can occur for a variety of reasons and be expressed by various symptoms. A typical indication of damage to the fuel system is when the Ford Focus 2 fuel pump is clearly humming. Moreover, even the new Ford Focus 2 fuel pump can hum. A loud humming is most often a sign that the fuel pump has simply burned out.

If the Ford Focus 2 fuel pump does not turn on, this means that it does not pump and does not idle the car. Finally, the cause of the malfunction may be the expired service life. On average, a Ford Focus fuel pump lasts for 5-7 years, but the service life is also closely related to the operating conditions of the vehicle and the quality of the fuel poured into it.

Signs of a faulty fuel pump:

  • Reduced throttle response
  • The appearance of jerks when moving
  • Interruptions in idle speed
  • Complete absence of idle speed
  • The fuel pump does not pump
  • The fuel pump is noisy when running

The Ford Focus 2 fuel pump may be noisy due to the characteristics of the device - there is an opinion that the Bosch fuel pump on the Ford Focus 2 has this feature and is distinguished by a louder sound compared to the original one. Also, a humming fuel pump may be a symptom of the need to replace it.

Reasons why the Ford Focus 2 fuel pump does not work:

  • Clogged fuel channels
  • Low-octane and low-quality gasoline
  • Frequent driving with minimal fuel in the tank
  • Ingress of rust and other foreign impurities with fuel
  • Overheating of the vehicle's on-board electrical system, which may result in engine failure
  • Mechanical damage to fuel system components and loss of pump tightness

Before proceeding directly to repairing or replacing components of the fuel system, you should visually assess the condition of its components, the fuel filter, the integrity of the fuel channels, and use a multimeter to check the resistance of the injectors.

Emergency button to turn off the fuel pump Ford Focus 2

Emergency shutdown of the Ford Focus 2 fuel pump is necessary in order to stop the supply of voltage to the pump in case the car is overturned during an accident. This button is only available on cars with a gasoline engine.

Removing the emergency shutdown button is carried out as follows:

  • Disconnect the wire from the negative terminal of the battery
  • Remove the left front sill trim
  • Unscrew 2 pcs. fastening bolts and remove the button from the panel
  • Using a screwdriver, press the clamp and disconnect the wiring harness block
  • Remove the emergency button of the fuel pump Ford Focus 2

Color coding of fuel pump wires Ford Focus 2

The second Focus uses two types of wire colors - single-color wires and two-color striped wires. In the manual they correspond to the designation of the wires - for single-color wires it is a single code, for two-color wires it is a double code. Below are the color codes for the Focus 2 wires.

Black B BLK
Blue Bl B.L.U.

The fuel pump system consists of several important components. A failure in the operation of one of the nodes often leads to a standstill of the entire chain. The fuel system is one of the key systems of a car. If problems associated with its operation are identified, immediate diagnosis is required, followed by repair or replacement. Timely troubleshooting will avoid more expensive vehicle repairs and extend its life cycle.

Where is the relay and fuse of the VAZ 2114 ECU located?

The main part of the fuses and relays is located in the mounting block of the engine compartment, but the relay and fuse responsible for the electronic control unit of the VAZ 2114 are located in a different place.

Relays and fuses of the VAZ 2114 computer

The second “block” is located under the dashboard on the front passenger side. To access it you just need to unscrew a few fasteners using a Phillips screwdriver. Why is it in quotes, because there is no such block, there is an ECU (brains) and 3 fuses + 3 relays.

Replacement features

In order to replace the fuel pump, it will have to be removed. If you are simply interested in a replacement, then you can do it yourself on a Ford Focus 2, but the repair requires more experienced intervention. The fact is that problems with the fuel pump cannot be ignored, but repairing it is not an easy task, since it will require disassembly and replacement of worn parts. We will dwell in more detail on how to replace the fuel pump on a Ford Focus 2. To do this, perform the following steps:

  • We take all safety measures if work is carried out indoors - open a window or sash, since gasoline vapors can be harmful. Turn off any devices that create elevated temperatures.
  • Through the trunk you need to gain access to the gas tank by unscrewing the mounting bolts. At the top of the tank there is a fuel pump and a fuel level sensor.
  • We remove the fuel supply hose and the “return” hose going to the pump, which will relieve pressure in the system. Insert the ignition key and start the engine. It must run until all the fuel in the system is used up. After stopping operation, check several times to see if the FordFocus 2 engine starts.
  • We mark all hoses, fittings, etc., so that in the future there will be no difficulties with reassembly and fuel circulation in the system.
  • Unscrew the fuel pump and remove it from the tank. Do everything carefully, as the fuel pump screen and rings can be easily broken.
  • We throw away or take the old part for repair.
  • We install a working fuel pump on a Ford Focus 2 by performing all the steps in reverse order.

After the mesh, rings, wires and tubes are installed, you need to check the functionality of the system. To do this, start the engine and check for any defects, leaks or other malfunctions. If nothing is found, drive the Ford Focus around the city, on the highway, downhill, which will allow you to test the fuel pump in different operating modes.

The old fuel pump can be disassembled and cleaned, and if necessary, used as a spare for the FordFocus 2. You can either do this yourself or contact a service center where, for little money, specialists will bring the worn part back to life.

Always monitor your Ford Focus 2, maintain it, change the fuel pump and other parts if necessary, which will allow you to maximize its service life.

The first method of dismantling the fuel pump

Let's start looking at the replacement process with the official method, which involves dismantling the fuel tank. There are not many steps here, but you will need an overpass, inspection hole or lift. It is also necessary to relieve pressure in the fuel system. To do this, with the ignition off, take out the fuel pump fuse F111, start the engine and use up all the fuel at idle speed to clear the gasoline from the pipes.

Further steps to dismantle the unit will be as follows:

  • Remove the terminal from the battery;
  • When the car is on the overpass, we move under the bottom;
  • Remove the fuel filter;
  • We unscrew the two nuts with a 10-mm head that hold the heat-shielding casing of the tank, and move the part to the side;
  • We remove the tubes from the adsorber located behind the tank. To do this, you need to press the lock button and pull out the hose;
  • At the front of the tank, remove the fuel hose from the nozzle by pulling out the white plastic fastener using a screwdriver. Fuel may be under pressure, so remove the tube carefully so that the fuel does not splash;
  • We remove the tank neck hose, which is located on the surface of the container and is held in place by a clamp. Loosen the clamp by unscrewing the screw, and then remove the hose. Remember that if the fuel level is higher than the tube, gasoline may leak out of the container;
  • We remove the thin air outlet pipe near the filler hole, freeing the product from the clamp;
  • Using a 13mm socket, we unscrew the mounting bolts holding the gas tank to the car body, but do not do this completely. Place your hand between the bottom and the front area of the tank, remove the contacts of the hatch cover from above. To do this, you will need to press on the connector fasteners and remove the contact blocks;
  • Now you can completely remove the tank by pulling it forward and down. We thoroughly clean the surfaces from dirt and dust, paying special attention to the area near the fuel module;
  • We take out the plastic threaded washer using a wooden spacer. You need to rest it against the edge of the washer and, with light blows, unscrew the washer from its mounting location;
  • We carefully take out the prefabricated module, evaluate the internal surfaces of the tank and the volume of suspended matter in the fuel. If necessary, rinse the container.

Installation of a new fuel pump is carried out according to the marks, by aligning the marks on the gas tank and the arrow on the pump itself. Assembly of the unit and its installation are carried out in the reverse order.

Fuel pump Ford Focus 2: replacement

On the Ford Focus 2 model, the fuel pump is installed in such a way that there is simply no special service hole for servicing it. This applies to both pre-restyling versions of Focus II and models after restyling. There is only a plug, under which there is not enough hole to remove the module.

The absence of a separate fuel pump hatch means the following:

  1. Officially, the module is replaced only after removing the gas tank from the car (the method is complicated);
  2. to remove the FF2 fuel pump without removing the gas tank, you will need to additionally cut a hole in the floor of the car under the rear seats (often practiced during self-service);

It is important to understand that each of these replacement methods allows you to remove the fuel pump on a Ford Focus, but you also need to take into account the pros and cons of one or another method of removing the module

Removing the gas tank to replace the fuel pump

The replacement method of removing the fuel tank is official, since there is no need to make a hole in the body, cut the bottom, etc.

This replacement method involves gaining free access to the lower part of the car. To do this, you need to drive the car into a viewing hole, overpass, or lift it on a lift.

To replace and remove the tank, you will need to prepare a set of wrenches, a hammer, a screwdriver (flat-head) and penetrating lubricant such as WD-40, as well as a rag.

Before removing fasteners, bolts and nuts should be treated with lubricant. Then you will need to relieve the pressure in the power system by removing relay K4 (pre-restyling models) or relay R19 (after restyling). Having turned off the Ford Focus fuel pump fuse, start the engine and wait until it stalls. First, remove the fuel tank heat shield. Next, you should find a pair of pipelines near the tank, which are disconnected by pressing the latches (on one side, the white plastic latch is picked up and pulled out, then the latch is pressed and it opens). The next step is to remove the filler neck pipeline (loosen the clamp and pull the tube off the outlet pipe). Now you need to unscrew the three bolts securing the metal bands that hold the tank. Now you can remove the gas tank (fuel is first pumped out of it using a bulb or a gas-resistant hose). Next, the outer surface of the tank is cleaned of dirt, after which it is possible to unscrew the plastic pressure ring. After completing this procedure, you can remove the fuel cup from the tank, after which you can check, repair or replace the pump

When installing a new pump, it is important to consider that there is an arrow on the body that should be aligned with the mark on the fuel tank. After installing the pump, tighten the clamping ring. Keep in mind that the ring is made of plastic, that is, it should not be tightened too much

It is important to ensure reliable fixation of the module without over-tightening the ring.

How to change the Ford Focus 2 fuel pump without removing the tank

The second replacement method is unofficial, since the hatch for the fuel pump will need to be cut out. Remember, such work can lead to accidental fuel fire! Another disadvantage is that after cutting out the hatch in the bottom, these areas may be subject to active corrosion.

To complete the work you will need to prepare:

  • scissors for cutting metal;
  • grinder and drill;
  • file;
  • screwdriver

It is also advisable to prepare a brush, anti-corrosion compounds or mastic for metal processing. This will prevent the development of corrosion of the bottom and protect the metal from moisture.

To replace the pump in the tank without removing it, do the following:

make a hole in the floor under the rear seat (it is advisable to make a template in advance)

The hole is made with a grinder or scissors; then the terminals and pipes are disconnected from the pump (you need to cover the ends of the fuel line with a rag); Use a wooden block to knock down the retaining ring and unscrew the ring; now the pump can be removed after first cleaning the top of the tank from dirt so that debris does not get inside; Taking into account the fact that the edges of the hole made will rust, it is necessary to treat it with anti-corrosion agent and then paint the area. It is also important, after installing the pump, not to leave the hole without a plug (ignoring this rule will cause the air to create noise at speed). Often the problem is solved by installing a hatch from another car

For example, a hatch from a VAZ “Ten” fits.

Tank removal method

First, let's look at how the fuel pump on a Focus 2 is changed according to the automaker's recommendation, that is, by dismantling the fuel tank.

To carry out the work, no special equipment is required; a standard set of tools and an inspection hole are sufficient.

It is better to perform the replacement operation with an assistant. In this case, you should make sure that there is less than half the tank of fuel.

The work algorithm is as follows:

  1. We put the car in the pit;
  2. We remove the fuse responsible for the operation of the pump, start the engine and wait for it to stop. This way we simply relieve the pressure in the fuel system;

  3. We climb under the car and find a plastic tank in the back of the car;
  4. We unscrew the bolts securing the heat shield from the tank, and move the shield itself down;

  5. An adsorber is fixed near the rear beam, to which two pipelines are connected. We disconnect these tubes from the adsorber (use a screwdriver to press the clamps and pull off the pipelines);

  6. In front of the tank we find two lines, one moves fuel, the other is an adsorber tube.

    We disconnect the pipelines coming from the tank from these lines. On one of the tubes there is a double clamp, one part of which is pryed up with a screwdriver and pulled out, the second is clamped with a finger, after which the pipeline can be pulled off.

    On the second tube there is a regular clamp - we clamp the tab on it and pull off the pipeline.

    We disconnect the tubes carefully, since a little gasoline may leak out of them;

  7. We find the clamp securing the filler pipe to the tank. We loosen it and take it up the pipe. Carefully pull the pipeline from the outlet pipe of the tank. Please note that there should be less than half of the fuel in the tank, otherwise everything will flood;
  8. A little to the side of the pipe there is another pipeline for vapor removal. We press the button on it and pull off the handset. If the button does not press, gently tap the entire mounting assembly;

  9. We put a special support under the tank or use a wooden post or a piece of pipe;

  10. Using a 13mm socket, unscrew the three bolts securing the metal bands holding the tank (two in the back, and one in front of the tank);
  11. Holding the tank with an assistant, remove the support and lower the tank a little down;
  12. If there is a lot of fuel, you can pump it into the canister using a fuel pump hose with a “bulb” (after lowering the tank, it will be easy to insert the hose into the outlet pipe of the filler neck pipeline);
  13. We get there and disconnect the wiring from the fuel pump (to do this, press the latch on the wire chip with a screwdriver);

  14. By positioning it correctly (by moving it forward and to the sides so that the pipe can fit through), we lower the tank even lower. Note that another thin tube runs near the inlet hose. It is secured with a clamp. We remove the latter using a screwdriver and dismantle the tube. We recommend using a regular clamp instead of the old clamp. Next, unfasten another canister tube; it is located in the rear of the tank. Remove the gas tank. The remaining work is carried out on the dismantled tank;

  15. We carefully clean the upper surface of the fuel container from dust and dirt, and also blow it well with compressed air;

  16. The fuel pump is fixed with a plastic unscrewing clamping ring. A special tool is used to unscrew the fasteners, although you can do without it. Using a hammer through a wooden guide, we strike the protrusions on the ring to tear it out of place;

  17. After removing the ring, carefully remove the pump;

  18. Before installing a new unit, we assess the degree of contamination of the tank and, if necessary, wash it;
  19. When installing a new pump, it is important to position it correctly. To do this, there is an upward arrow on the body, which we combine with the mark made on the tank near the hole for the electric pump;

  20. We fix the assembly with a fastening ring. Treat the ring threads with WD-40. You need to tighten it well, but keep in mind that the ring is plastic, so you shouldn’t use excessive force. For reliable fixation, use a wooden adapter and a hammer;

  21. We put the reservoir with the new pump in place on the car, fix it with bolts and connect all the elements back.

During installation, special attention should be paid to the tightening of the clamps and the correct position of the clamps. All connections must be tightly tightened to prevent fuel leaks.

We recommend that, at first, after replacing the fuel pump, you periodically inspect the connections of all pipes, so that if there is a fuel leak, you can notice it in a timely manner and fix it by tightening the clamps.

Replacement without removing the tank

As you can see, the “official” method of replacing the fuel pump on a Ford Focus 2 is not very convenient, so car enthusiasts have found a different method of carrying out the work, and for this it is necessary to slightly modify the bottom at the location of the tank.

Therefore, to carry out the work, in addition to a set of keys and screwdrivers, you will need:

  • Metal scissors (you can use a drill with an attachment for cutting metal);
  • Drill with drills of small diameters;
  • File;
  • Rags;
  • Metal plate;
  • A piece of rubber;
  • Self-tapping screws.

Using the “amateur” replacement method, an inspection hole will not be required, and it is better to do the work outside, with all the doors in the car open.

We begin the operation by relieving pressure in the fuel system by pulling out the pump fuse and producing gasoline with the engine running.

And then:

  1. Remove the rear seat and floor covering;
  2. We take out the plug of the technological hole;

  3. To gain access, it is necessary to cut out a section with a diameter of approximately 25 cm in the bottom, guided by the location of the pump (see the entry points for the pump power wires);
  4. We first make markings;
  5. To facilitate work along the perimeter of the applied marking, we make holes with a drill, while making sure that the drill does not go down too much (so as not to accidentally damage the pipes or tank);
  6. Using metal scissors, cut out a section of the bottom. There are alternative ways to cut metal;

  7. We clean the edges of the resulting hole with a file to remove burrs;
  8. We thoroughly blow the surface of the tank with compressed air and wipe it with rags;
  9. We disconnect the fuel line from the pump, after placing rags under them, as well as a chip with wiring;
  10. Using a hammer with a wooden handle, we tear off the fixing ring of the pump and twist it completely;

  11. We remove the faulty pump and install a new one in its place, fixing the unit with a ring;

  12. Reconnect the fuel line and wiring.

After replacement, the edges of the hole should be treated with anti-corrosion agents, paint and that’s it, but it’s better to seal the hole. And for this we use a metal plate with dimensions slightly larger than the hole and a piece of rubber - 30 by 30 cm.

In this case, the rubber will be a gasket between the body and the plate. All that remains is to secure the improvised cover with self-tapping screws.

The method that does not require removing the tank is convenient in that it is enough to make a technological hole once and then constantly use it when replacing the fuel pump on a Ford Focus 2.

Important points

When unscrewing the fuel lines from the pump, you must be extremely careful and under no circumstances point the tubes at your face or towards the front seats, since the gasoline in them is under pressure. It is best to unscrew the tubes after wrapping the couplings with a rag. Since after all the above operations a round hole appears in the cabin floor, it must be repaired

For this, a square metal plate (dimensions: 30 by 30 cm) is suitable, in the corners of which holes are drilled. The floor in the cabin is thin, so the plate is easily attached to 4 self-tapping screws. This will reliably protect the pump from damage. To make it easier to cut through the floor panel with scissors, you can pre-drill a series of holes where the cut will be made. This can be done with a regular electric drill. However, the drill should not be too long, since in this case there is a risk of hitting the gas tank (and it is very easy to damage it, since it is plastic on the Ford Focus 2).

Of course, the method of replacing the pump given in this article can hardly be called beautiful. But it has three undoubted advantages. Firstly, it’s fast, and secondly, it’s simple, so even a novice car enthusiast can complete this task. And finally, it’s cheap, because you won’t have to pay auto mechanics at the service center to completely remove the gas tank and a lot of related operations.

Where to look for a fuel pump?

Fault diagnosis

We will tell you how to remove this part from the car a little later, but first we recommend you figure out how to determine if the fuel pump on a Ford Focus 2 is not working. And so, the main signs of a malfunction can be considered:

• reduced or increased gasoline consumption;

• difficulty starting both a cold and an overheated engine;

• constantly floating speed;

• unstable operation of the engine at idle;

• when accelerating, the engine runs jerkily (fuel lines are clogged).

When to remove the Ford Focus fuel pump

For Ford Focus 2, replacing the fuel pump is usually required on cars with fairly high mileage (from 150-200 thousand km or more). Typically, the following symptoms indicate fuel supply problems:

  • the engine does not start well;
  • When accelerating, jerks and dips occur;
  • the fuel pump is loud and noisy;
  • noticeable loss of power;
  • the pump does not work when the ignition is turned on (there is no characteristic sound of its operation).

If, with such symptoms, the fuel filter, injectors, power and ignition systems are in good condition, and power is supplied to the pump itself, then checking the fuel pump is necessary. The diagnosis begins with measuring the pressure in the Focus II fuel system, after which a decision is made to remove the pump.

Please note that the fuel pump may not often require replacement. You only need to replace the mesh filter of the Ford Focus fuel pump

However, to connect access to the fuel pump strainer, the device still needs to be removed.

Methods for replacing a node

The fuel pump for Ford Focus 2, both in pre-restyling and restyled versions, is considered unrepairable and cannot be restored, therefore, when a malfunction is determined, it is simply replaced with a new one.

But many car owners get out of the situation by changing only the lower flask-filter assembly and installing analogues from other cars instead of the failed original pump (fuel pumping unit). But more on that later.

One of the manufacturer’s not very successful decisions is the absence of a technological hole in the bottom of the Focus 2, providing access to the unit.

Therefore, the “official” method of replacing a Ford Focus 2 fuel pump involves completely dismantling the tank.

This method of work is quite labor-intensive, so car enthusiasts often replace the unit without removing the fuel tank.

Instructions for replacing the fuel filter on a Ford Focus 1

1. Using special pliers, remove the fuse (No. 12) from the fuse box, which is responsible for the operation of the fuel pump.

2. After removing the fuse, start the engine and let it run until it stops on its own. After this, crank the starter again to make sure that the remaining gasoline in the fuel line is consumed.

3. Now you must go down into the pit or, if you have a lift, raise the car. As mentioned above, the fuel filter is located in the gas tank area, on the right side of the rear of the car, you won’t have much difficulty finding it.

4. Now disconnect the connectors on the filter. Do not touch only the thick green connector, which is responsible for the return flow of gasoline into the tank. The connections are quick-release, so they can be easily disconnected by bringing the hooks together and pushing the stopper to the side. It’s easier to press out the stoppers one at a time, and to simplify the process, initially clean the connectors of oil deposits and dirt.

5. Before disconnecting the gas tank pipes, be sure to place a container under the filter so that it can drain there.

6. Now take an “8” socket or a wrench and use it to unscrew the gas filter mounting bolt.

7. Remove the cleaning filter together with the holder.

8. Next, you should remove the old filter and install a new one in its place. To do this, you need to loosen the self-tapping screw with a socket wrench set to “7”.

9. Be careful when replacing the filter. The new cleaning element should be installed in accordance with the direction of the arrow on the filter housing. The arrow indicates the direction of fuel movement. Keep in mind that the folded edges should be facing outwards.

10. Reinstall the filter holder and connect the fuel hoses. The successful installation of the fuel pipes is indicated by a characteristic click.

11. Now you can replace the fuse and start the engine to check its operation. During this, at the same time check the mounting points and the filter itself for fuel leaks. If any, tighten the clamps and fastenings.

How to repair a Ford Focus 2 fuel pump

Officially, the fuel pump on the FF2 cannot be repaired. This means that if it malfunctions, it needs to be replaced with a new device.

However, in practice its restoration is possible. Some car enthusiasts rebuild the pump, replacing worn parts with similar ones from Ford, others install an electric pump from the fuel modules of suitable cars, etc.

It is important to understand that the main focus should be on safety. The slightest spark or heat in the fuel tank can cause a fire! For this reason, it is optimal to replace the pump with a new device, preferably with the original.

To replace the fuel pump, we buy a module from one of the following manufacturers:

  • Messmer or ERA with catalog number 775238;
  • EAS Ultimate EFU201029;
  • Mazda ZY08-13-35XG;
  • Mazda ZY08-13-35XF;
  • Ford pumps with numbers 1345817, 1364663, 1388677.

The average price of a fuel pump is about 17,000 rubles , and the nominal pressure generated should be in the range of 3.9-4.2 bar. Clean gasoline to everyone and successful replacement!

Device location

You need to look for the unit under the VAZ 2114 torpedo. To get the device for its subsequent repair and flashing, you need to remove the torpedo panel. To do this, you need to unscrew the screws on the passenger side, and then pick up the panel itself from there, after which it can be removed without any problems. When the dismantling procedure is completed, a hole will appear in front of you. Through it you can reach the device itself, which is secured with a special steel clamp.

What fuel pumps are installed on the Ford Focus: models, design, location

In the fuel supply system of Ford Focus cars, the fuel pump plays the role of transporting fuel from the tank to the engine. It is advisable to install original spare parts on these cars. But they are expensive. Therefore, some are content with alternative options. For example, Italian ERA gasoline pumps are quite popular.

A few interesting points about Erov’s models:

  • ERA is not a manufacturer, but a supplier of spare parts. It does not produce anything itself, but is only a packager of certain components. Thus, a fuel pump for an American car packaged by this company can also be considered an original part;
  • Often on the market you can find fuel pumps packaged in the same boxes with the Mesmer inscription. The price of the models is almost half that of ERA products. What's the catch? It turns out that this is a “left” pump, most likely made in China; It is recommended to carefully check the Messmer fuel pump in the package
  • To identify a fake, it is recommended to look first at the label of the packaging box. The “Chinese” sticker is of lower quality, printed on a black and white printer. Secondly, look for the presence of a protective film on top of the pump, on which the ERA brand name should be applied. As a rule, it is not present on fakes; The inscription ERA inside the package indicates the originality of the product
  • the presence of a Visteon label on the top of the pump can also be considered a signature feature of a real Ford product; The Visteon label on a gas pump is a sign of quality and originality

Similar fuel pumps that fit the Ford Focus without any problems are from the Volvo S40, Mazda 3. They cost a little more than the Italian ones, but are cheaper than the original ones.

In terms of design, the original fuel pump of Ford Focus cars is a model of an electric submersible rotary pump. The pump is equipped with coarse and fine filters and a pressure regulator. The submersible version of the pump model is considered the best today, as it reduces the risk of vapor locks. Fuel here is supplied under pressure, and not as a result of vacuum.

Original fuel pumps for Ford Focus are made in the USA. The price for parts is about 3–5 thousand rubles. (in times of shortage the cost jumped to 20 thousand rubles). Analogs, as mentioned, are almost half the price.

Ford Focus fuel pumps can be identified by catalog numbers:

  • 1234552;
  • 1254193;
  • 1305354;
  • 1309160;
  • 1312617;
  • 1529595.

There is no particular difference between fuel pumps for Ford Focus cars of different generations. However, it is recommended to indicate the year of manufacture and engine modification when purchasing.

The fuel pump is located on the top surface of the tank, next to the hatch. You need to remove the rear seat to get to it (on sedans) or climb from the trunk side (in hatchbacks). However, when developing the car, the engineers did not take into account that the pumps, although original (of high quality), are not at all eternal. If they had provided a hatch under the seat, dismantling the pump would have been much easier. Here the pump is placed directly into the tank. To remove it, you have to cut the tank.

Removing the fuel pump from Ford Focus cars is fraught with significant difficulties

Ford Focus fuel pump: manufacturers, location and reasons for failure

The fuel pump is the main component of the fuel supply system. Almost any malfunction leads to the engine stopping.

The first generations of Focus cars were equipped with standard fuel pumps. Since 2007, the manufacturer began to equip machines with devices with an emergency shutdown function. This function is activated at the moment of an accident and completely stops the supply of fuel to the system.

Manufacturers

New Ford Focus vehicles are equipped with Visteon fuel pumps. This is an American corporation that produces and supplies components for almost the entire family of Ford cars. Now Visteon representative offices also operate in Russia, so Focus car owners will always be able to purchase the necessary spare parts in the original version.

The body of the original fuel pump must have a yellow sticker from the manufacturer

For non-original components, it is recommended to buy fuel pumps manufactured by Mesmer and Era. They are quite reliable and cost much less than Visteon.

Location

Getting to the fuel pump in a Ford Focus is quite difficult. The manufacturer did not assume that Russian car owners would change it themselves, and installed a pump in the gas tank.

On a Ford Focus, the fuel pump is submerged in the gas tank.

Symptoms of malfunctions

You will most likely need to replace the fuel pump if:

  • when you press the accelerator pedal, the engine starts to run jerkily;
  • at idle speed the engine is unstable, with “dips”;
  • the car does not start the first time;
  • fuel consumption is significantly higher than usual.

A failed element cannot be restored, so you should not try to repair it.
