Do-it-yourself door sill covers are a topic that interests many car owners. This is explained by various reasons:
- Firstly, homemade tuning looks better, because it is unique and completes the image of the car. The main thing is that it is done with high quality and with love.
- Secondly, homemade pads will cost less than the original ones. Products presented by manufacturers often exceed all possible expectations in cost. Even if you choose plastic, for an inexpensive foreign car it will cost an unreasonable amount.
Anyone can make such a tuning element, the main thing is to choose the right dimensions, take into account the installation technology and other points.
There are many articles on this topic on the Internet. At the same time, we can roughly imagine two ways to create overlays - from cheaper models created by domestic manufacturers, or from scrap materials on our own. Whatever method is chosen, each has its own advantages and is used quite often.
Mitsubishi Lancer ☯ Black Mamba ☯ › Logbook › Installing body kit 2.0 - part 1 (Sill covers)
All the best! I think from the title of the topic you already guessed that we will talk about installing original Lancer 2.0 sill trims. I purchased the entire set (lips + two lips) back in November 2015! I put off the installation for a long time, for many reasons, the main ones being finances and the onset of winter! The body kit matches the color of my body, but I still decided to give it to a painter to paint it to bring it to excellent condition! For installation we will need: - right threshold trim MR 380004
;
Now we can begin installation: 1. Remove the front mudguards
To remove the front mudguards, you need to turn the wheels so that there is free access to the heads of the three screws that secure the mudguards to the wing. We take a 10 mm spanner, unscrew three screws and remove the mudguard, remove the second one in the same way. After removing the mudguards, we put them aside; we won’t need them anymore, since they don’t fit on the body kit!
2. We thoroughly wash and wipe dry the threshold and part of the bottom under the threshold. Then we degrease the threshold with anti-silicone remover.
3. We degrease and glue the inner upper edge of the sill trim with double-sided tape.
4. We remove the factory clips, degrease the nickels into which the clips are inserted and apply Crocodile glue to the nickels
From the factory on the Lancer 2.0 there are special holes in the sills into which the trim clips are inserted, we don’t have these holes! I did not want to drill holes in order to avoid further corrosion of the metal in these places due to constant moisture under the cover. So I decided to remove the clips.
5. We use self-tapping screws to attach the sill trim into special factory holes in the bottom of the car.
Under the thresholds in the bottom there are special holes for attaching linings.
6. We level the trim, remove the protective film from the double-sided tape and glue the trim to the threshold.
At the end of the trim, where the mudguards are attached, there are two holes; we combine the holes in the trim with the holes in the wing, this will be our level.
It is better to start peeling off the protective film and gluing the lining gradually from the front part!
7. We tighten the five screws in the bottom that we installed before and screw back the three screws that held the mudguards.
The second overlay is installed in the same way.
8. We are happy with the result!

Why are plastic door sills needed?
Another important point is style. The threshold must correspond to the appearance of the car as intended by the owner. The most practical are steel products that fit securely to the body and can withstand significant impacts.
You need to glue door sill trims on cars for both decorative and protective purposes. They protect against scratches and other defects.
What are they intended for?
Thresholds are special parts of the car body, made from different materials. They guarantee an aesthetic appearance of the vehicle and protect the body from corrosion and other damage. Each design of protective accessories is specific to a specific car model.
When choosing spare parts for the car body, look at such circumstances as the characteristics of the coatings, the distance between joints, the difference in height, and the level of cross-country ability.
Protective car accessories repel water well and are resistant to any climate. They are simply attached to the surface of the machine and are resistant to mechanical influences.
What are overlays for?
Car tuning also includes door sills. They serve the following purposes:
Door sill trim
The threshold is constantly in contact with dirt, reagents and water. The moisture does not have time to dry out as the doors remain closed. The appearance of rust is a problem not only because it looks unattractive, it affects the life of the body.
Plastic door sill covers protect against scratches and corrosive factors.
What qualities should linings have?
Having decided to install door sills on your car, you should decide what the purpose of the tuning is. It depends on what properties to pay attention to first of all.
Types of overlays
Car door sills are subject to high loads, which is why they are made of durable polymers and alloys. Steel moldings can be of any shade, so it’s easy to match them to the color of the body. Plastic ones will suit a modest wallet.
Chrome plated
Withstand maximum wear and shine, these trims are suitable for SUVs with clearly defined sills. They can also be installed on other models if it matches the chosen style.
Made from fiberglass and plastic
Backlit
Modern moldings with LEDs are made of steel, and the insert - LED backlighting - is made of wear-resistant polymer. To power such a threshold, you need to connect it to the on-board network.
Universal moldings are suitable for cars of different brands, but personalized ones have advantageous differences:
If you want to achieve a certain effect, these points should be taken into account when choosing a specific solution.
Choosing interior thresholds
- After you have laid the flooring in adjacent rooms and installed an interior door, you need to measure the width and length of the gap that has formed between the joints, for example, of laminate and linoleum. The stores have a huge selection of thresholds in width and length, so be sure to measure.
- It often happens that the floor levels in adjacent rooms are different and in this case ordinary thresholds will not suit us. It is necessary to purchase multi-level thresholds. I’ll tell you in more detail how to choose them below.
- Thresholds are mostly made of aluminum. The colors and shapes are varied. There are also more durable metal ones, which are made from brass and stainless steel.
- Thresholds made from wood are, of course, very beautiful, but they will be expensive. They also require more complex care. They are generally not popular because they are not durable at all.
Please note: How to install platbands on interior doors
In order to make a horizontal connection between two different floor coverings, a cork expansion joint is usually used. This plank is an indispensable part, especially in those rooms where sudden temperature changes occur, as well as in those where there is a high level of humidity. It can expand and contract almost twice, which will absorb any thermal expansion.
How to glue door sills on a car
Before gluing the door sills on your car, you need to read the instructions. This will help you avoid making mistakes.
Adhesive compositions and materials
Car tuning is installed using:
Each material requires compliance with a number of rules. When using tape, keep the following in mind:
Sets of overlays from many manufacturers are distinguished by a pre-applied adhesive layer; these will be easier to work with.
Preparation
It is possible to install car sill trims correctly if the preparation procedure is carried out correctly. Initially, high-quality cleaning of contaminants in the location of the element will be required. After removing dirt and dust, you need to degrease the surface using an alcohol wipe.
Preparation for gluing the lining
If glued with double-sided tape, it is placed in place, bending the protective film back by 2-3 cm so that it can be removed gradually. If a sealant is used, the area is first marked with a marker and then the compound is applied.
Installation of overlays
You need to glue the door sill trims on your car using the vertical posts as a guide. The front ones are glued at a distance of 18 cm from the first, the rear ones - 16 cm from the central one.
During installation, it is important to carefully press the component onto the surface to ensure maximum adhesion. After installation, the part is glued on top with masking tape for a while to help the glue adhere better.
Execution materials
When choosing raw materials, it is necessary to take into account the conditions in which the door threshold will be used.
The tasks that will be assigned to this element of the front door are also taken into account. There are enough materials for execution, but each of them will behave differently in the same circumstances
Metal
Perhaps this is the most reliable and durable material. Conventional steel is used extremely rarely and, as a rule, for industrial facilities. In residential premises, various alloys are mostly used. This is brass or stainless steel. But aluminum is very popular. It is easy to care for and very resistant to abrasion. The only downside is its slippery surface. Therefore, it is decorated with corrugated elements. They can be made of rubber, wood or plastic.
Advantages of metal thresholds:
- Used for any premises with high traffic;
- Not afraid of high humidity;
- Simple in design;
- Preservation of all characteristics with a sufficiently long service life;
- Finished products have a large selection of sizes;
- Easy to install;
- Not afraid of corrosion and mechanical stress;
- Low cost.
For interior passages, low thresholds are made (up to 2 cm). Some of them can even be installed with tile adhesive. A balcony or front door requires taller structures that are fixed with self-tapping screws. This is not difficult and anyone can do this work on their own.
Tree
Wooden thresholds are very popular in residential areas. For the front door, only hard wood should be used. You don’t even have to buy the planks, but make them yourself from oak or aspen. But store-bought products are not expensive and have a very wide range, differing in color and texture.
Advantages of wooden thresholds:
- Environmental friendliness;
- High insulation characteristics;
- Easy to install;
- Compatibility with laminate and linoleum;
- Sufficient strength;
- Low price.
But the material is sensitive to high humidity and is not recommended for installation outdoors or for bathrooms. True, if it is pre-treated with protective compounds and painted, then it copes with all tasks no worse than others.
But the wooden threshold has proven itself best in interior transitions. There is no need for serious processing and you can only use clear varnish. It will best highlight the beautiful texture of wood and the element will act as a good decor.
Concrete
One of the most durable options, but also the most expensive. As a rule, they are installed at entrance or balcony passages. Optimal for the private sector, where you can often see a tile threshold. A concrete base is poured at the front door and then lined with decorative material.
Features of concrete structure:
- Suitable for high traffic openings;
- Great durability (up to 50 years);
- Excellent waterproofing properties.
Concrete thresholds for the front door are extremely rarely left without decoration. They are usually covered with ceramic tiles. You can find laminate and wood finishes. But a simply painted concrete surface looks decent.
Most often, the threshold is made before the doors are installed. And for its production, a plasticizer must be added to the cement-sand mixture. This reduces the formation of cracks on the surface and extends service life.
But if chips do occur, then in most cases their covering will be only temporary. A serious crack indicates a violation of manufacturing technology and a complete rework of the threshold will be required.
Concrete is rarely used in interior passages. It can be seen, perhaps, only in the bathroom. In other premises it is not only unprofitable, but also of little aesthetic value. Under some circumstances, the threshold is made of brick. This can be seen especially often if it is multi-level, in the form of a staircase.
You can recall some examples of making plastic thresholds. But this material is fragile and is afraid of sunlight. You can find it when it comes complete with a metal-plastic door.
denisok-1994 › Blog › Do-it-yourself car threshold repair
Regardless of whether your car is new or not, sooner or later you have to deal with sill failures. This problem is caused by poor quality roads, a large number of potholes, or simply a love of extreme driving. It is quite possible to repair thresholds on a car with your own hands: we will find out what is needed for this further. Purpose and design of thresholds Thresholds on a car play several roles at once:
Protects cars from mechanical damage, scratches, deformations, etc. Assist passengers when exiting and entering the cabin. Protects body sills. They are a stylish addition to the car and make it visually more attractive. Repair of thresholds on a car must be carried out in accordance with the design. It can be different: plastic, metal, chrome, with or without backlight. Thresholds may or may not be removable, which must also be taken into account during repair work.
Repair of non-removable thresholds For non-removable elements, the use of special repair technology will be required. Such thresholds are securely welded to the surface of the car, so you will have to work carefully so as not to damage the surface of the car. Tools for repairs without welding To repair thresholds with your own hands without welding, you will need:
Let's sum it up
What else to say. There are a number of videos on YouTube hosting. They clearly show the procedure for repairing and restoring thresholds on different cars.
Yes, renovation is the solution. This is a way to extend the life of parts.
But objectively it is better to change the details. Especially when the threshold is removable. This is the right decision you can make. Less hassle, but the result will be better.
With non-removable ones the situation is much more complicated. And when rust has affected 30-50% of the surfaces of a part, it may be worth thinking about selling the car or disposing of it. It depends on the condition of the rest of the body.
I want to wish you good luck and less rust on your car, as well as less dents.

Features of applying protective film to car sills
Wear and tear of a car as it is used is a completely natural and natural phenomenon. All kinds of obstacles and factors negatively affect the condition of the vehicle.
Quite often, it is the body that suffers because it encounters road dust, debris, gravel, etc. The result is chips, scratches and damage to the paintwork.
Thresholds are also among the vehicle's vulnerable points. They are constantly in contact with shoes, the soles of which may contain abrasive particles (sand, dirt, debris), various types of chemicals used in winter, and more. Thresholds also wear out, wear out and get scratched.
But it is within the power of the motorist to protect them by covering the thresholds with a protective film. This is a fairly effective protective agent available to everyone.
A modern version of the threshold for interior doors
Today, a threshold is installed on any interior door, but in some cases it can cause some discomfort, so more often homeowners resort to looking for more alternative solutions.
The most popular is the retractable threshold (smart) for interior doors. The principle of its operation is very simple: when the door is closed, it lowers, and when opened, it hides in the canvas. Housewives have already been able to appreciate the functionality of the mechanism, because nothing else interferes with washing the floors.
Design features
Depending on the design features, the threshold can be:
Retractable. System with a spring mechanism and good rubber seals. Profile – aluminum. To activate the mechanism, you need to press a special button, which is located at the end of the door. When closing the door, the spring absolutely silently pushes out the seal and closes the gap between the door and the floor. The rubber is made of high-quality material, does not wear off or deform during long-term use.
Drop-down. Used on plastic wooden and aluminum doors. A drop-down threshold for wooden interior doors guarantees heat retention in the room, has good sound insulation, prevents dust from entering the room and adapts to all unevenness on the floor. The big advantage of the drop-down threshold is that it is absolutely impossible to get injured from it, as happens with the standard version. It is very often installed in houses or apartments where there are disabled people who use wheelchairs or in families with small children. Among the disadvantages of the design is the impossibility of installing it in a bathroom or toilet, because in such rooms there must be a difference in height to avoid the possibility of flooding.
Benefits of automatic threshold
The threshold is very practical because, unlike standard options, it is attached not to the floor covering, but to the canvas itself. Very often it is used in families where there are small children or people with disabilities who use wheelchairs. This mechanism is also used in airports, hospitals and other public places.
In addition, it is necessary to highlight the following advantages of the automatic threshold:
- Durability in operation;
- Has good heat and sound insulation;
- Does not disturb the natural ventilation of the room;
- Simple installation of the installation;
- Protects from moisture, drafts and foreign odors;
- Installed on any type of door;
- Has an affordable price.
Thus, interior doors can have different types of thresholds. Installation will take a little time, the main thing is to know about the characteristics of the product’s material and have the necessary tools at hand.
The concept of armored film
If you want to focus specifically on protecting the thresholds, then you will need to use special protective material.
Many people quite often associate armored film with vinyl film, which is used to cover car sills. But these are not exactly the same materials. Vinyl is more of a decorative coating, since its strength is noticeably lower than that of a polyurethane coating.
There is also a carbon type of film, but only some varieties have sufficient protective properties. Most of them are for indoor use only and are not suitable for external use.
Armor film is a transparent anti-gravel film that effectively protects all the most vulnerable areas of the body. It does not in any way affect the change in appearance, maintaining the original color of the threshold. But at the same time it covers it with a protective, durable layer.
Types of products: purpose and material of manufacture
Wooden threshold of adjacent rooms
It is permissible to classify floor thresholds according to two main types regarding the purpose of the location:
- Entrance door threshold.
- Interior door thresholds.
The presented two design types differ from each other not only in purpose, but also visually.
If a door with an entrance threshold is designed to protect the internal microclimate from negative external influences. That said, interior delimiters and the exclusion of rooms that were listed above for mandatory installation may not be of great importance.
It is worth paying attention that if many door blocks in their design have a threshold as a single composite frame, then in its absence it is worth taking care of the correct design of the joints of the floor coverings or the difference in floor levels. If absolutely necessary, if there is no elevation in the door structure, it is recommended to use aluminum or plastic universal elements
You can buy thresholds as a separate part in any construction or other specialized store
If absolutely necessary, if there is no elevation in the door structure, it is recommended to use aluminum or plastic universal elements. You can buy thresholds as a separate part in any construction or other specialized store.
One of the types of interior threshold
It is possible to buy thresholds for the floor from a wide variety of materials, which will not go against the basic design of the room:
Wood, as the most common and affordable raw material, is used to make thresholds for both interior and entrance purposes.
The choice of wooden room dividers is unlimited. You can choose an element made of pine or opt for products made of solid oak.
It is worth noting that preference when selecting material should be given to oak. This product is characterized as wear-resistant.
Metal products are presented in a wide variety of manufacturing forms.
For different types of premises, it is permissible to select a part made of stainless steel or brass. Aluminum thresholds are even used as a decorative component when designing the joints of floor coverings and steps.
Multi-level aluminum threshold
- Plastic products are not endowed with a high level of wear resistance, so it is preferable to install them in buildings for private use, and as interior parts.
- Many people may associate concrete steps with house steps. This is a little different, since balcony openings in apartments are often equipped with concrete risers.
The material used is specialized concrete with non-shrinking characteristics and special additives to it, which provides not only strength during operation, but also elasticity of the product. In addition, concrete elevations can be finished with tiled masonry, sheathed with laminate, and so on.
Types of concrete thresholds with various finishes
Cork material is often used in situations where it is necessary to highlight a clear difference in floor levels in a room in a favorable light. The flexibility and elasticity of the material allows it to be used in the most difficult situations.
As for the methods of installation and fastening of the products in question, a wide variety of methods can be used here, which are characterized as:
- fastening of open type of installation;
- hidden fastening thanks to special inserts.
Flexible universal threshold of hidden fastening type
Now we know virtually everything about opening transitions; we just need to choose the most suitable option for our personal type of use.

What are the main advantages
If you still doubt whether you need film to protect your car's sills, you should take a look at the main advantages of such a solution.
First you need to understand how armored film made on the basis of polyurethane prevents damage to the paintwork. This is due to the properties of the material to dissipate energy when striking. Therefore, polyurethane is widely used to protect the most vulnerable areas of a car, including headlights, hood and sills.
In addition to mechanical protection, the thresholds are protected from infrared radiation. Together with it, protection is created from UV rays and aggressive chemicals that are actively scattered along Russian roads during winter precipitation.
If you have a new car and you bought it literally before the start of winter, then this is a good reason to stick the film on. It will protect the paintwork and preserve the original appearance of the car. As the coating wears out, it is simply removed and replaced with a new one.
Therefore, the main advantages of using polyurethane protective films include the following points:
These are more than significant advantages that encourage many motorists to take advantage of the unique capabilities of armored film.
Of course, the result largely depends on the correctly selected material and adherence to application technology. Because of this, some drivers find it easier to take their car to a car service center, where specialized specialists will perform all the necessary manipulations.

It turned out beautifully, about ten years ago I wanted to do something similar, but abandoned this idea because... it will wear out (scratch) very quickly and the appearance will be lost.
enough for a couple of years!
Idk, I doubt it, everything will depend on the “raised” legs, of course the varnish was applied well, but the composite itself is scratched by wiping with a soft, clean rag, the effect of a “spider web” is obtained.
I know that it scratches “great”, that’s why the varnish was applied in three layers, maybe a 300 micron armor film!
as an option, but I think something more durable, for example D16AT, one of these days they will bring this material (duralumin + aluminum), I’ll try to engrave and see how it will look, if not very good, I can fill it with paint or make it light))
“duralumin + aluminum” - actually, such a thing does not exist in nature)))
“duralumin + aluminum” - actually, such a thing does not exist in nature)))
I may not have expressed myself correctly, but I think it’s clear, the common people call duralumin, it’s the same thing as, for example, a composite, they call it dibond, but if you want to get to the bottom of it, then of course it’s wrong :-))
don’t worry), I’m like that, by the way, otherwise you’ll come across a competent girl - you’ll screw up)))
I’m not worried, but someone was offended)) he better learn to cook borscht, otherwise he’ll go astray and no one will marry him :-))
Ha-Ha-Ha! Well, well... It’s obviously more interesting and more fun to be smart!
By the way, the D16T is pretty cool for this job, linings. ordinary aluminum with embossing - for the eyes.
why is it cool? There will be more “fuss” with a tin than there’s any point in doing this anyway, but there are enough trinkets that won’t last long))
Yes, because it’s “duralumin”! As you say))) Tough, fragile. It’s difficult to give shape - you’ll get tired of letting go. Nobody remembers about China, 3 is embossed behind the eyes. Yes, even 2 is enough: you’ll scrap the car, and they’ll all bury us, but the pad will remain)

What you need for work
Each manufacturer may have its own recommendations regarding the use and application of protective films for sills and other areas of the car body.
But most of them have common principles and the same approach to organizing the process. If you cover the thresholds of your car with armored transparent film yourself, you will first have to collect a list of necessary tools and materials.
To work, you basically need a set consisting of:
Professionals quite often use the dry method, which does not involve the use of a soap solution. But for this method you need a fairly powerful construction hairdryer.
When gluing yourself, the dry method is not recommended. It requires extreme precision, experience and skill. A beginner may not be able to cope with this, and correcting the error will be quite difficult. You'll have to redo everything again. Therefore, the main emphasis will be on the wet method.
Preliminary preparation
The mistake of most motorists who decide to independently armor the thresholds of their car with a special film is to ignore the preparatory stage of this work.
There are even those who simply brush off a layer of dust from the threshold and immediately begin gluing the material. As a result, approximately the same subsequent picture occurs. After a while, the film begins to peel off, air bubbles form under it, it quickly breaks and only spoils the appearance of the car.
In order to correctly apply a previously purchased protective film to the thresholds of your own car, you must first complete the required preparation. It consists of several stages:
It is recommended to work with films indoors. If it is a dusty garage, it is better to carry out a wet cleaning first so that the dust settles and does not fall on the body elements during the film application process.
It is not necessary to apply armor film at negative ambient temperatures. Each manufacturer has its own recommendations regarding the optimal temperature conditions for working with the material.
What is this design for?
The threshold at the door is the final element in the design of the door space. In interior passages, planks serve as a decorative element, but for entrance and balcony doors their installation is mandatory, as they protect the floor from the accumulation of dirt and dust. Thresholds are recommended at the entrance to rooms with high humidity or with a risk of smoke and odors (bathrooms, toilets, kitchens).
Purpose of thresholds:
- sound insulation;
- thermal insulation;
- obstacle to the spread of odors outside the premises;
- protection from accumulation of dirt and dust;
- decorative finishing.
Attention
Installing the bar increases the degree of protection of the room from intruders. An important purpose of a threshold is its ability to level out differences in floor coverings between zones.
