Types of glass and defects

Repairing car glass should not be put off until later; in many modern cars they are glued in and are considered to be additional structural structural elements. There are two types of car glass:

DIY glass repair

To perform the windshield restoration procedure yourself, you will need the following tools:

1. A polymer that will be used to seal the damaged area. You need to choose a material that hardens quickly and has the same refractive index as glass.
2. Injector and bridge. Needed to introduce the adhesive mixture into the chip. It is preferable to choose metal models. Plastic analogues are short-lived.
3. Pump to remove air from the damaged area. Sometimes used to inject polymer under pressure.
4. Diamond drill. It is necessary that the rotation speed of the drill be regulated. Using a drill, drill holes in the windshield to relieve stress from it.
5. Scriber. This is a device for cleaning the damaged area from fragments.
6. Flashlight. To carefully inspect the damage for bubbles.

The process of self-repairing a windshield consists of the following steps:

• Cleaning the damaged area from dirt and debris.
• Drilling. At this stage, a through hole is drilled at a distance of 2 mm in the direction of the crack expansion. This will relieve the stress on the glass and prevent the damage from spreading.
• Cleaning the crack with a scriber.
• Preparation of the polymer composition for use.
• Preparing the injector for use.
• Pouring glue.
• Removing the injector from the windshield.

How to use the kit to repair cracks up to 30 cm

All conditions regarding the level of illumination of the repair room and the temperature of the surface being treated are the same as in the previous section.

DIY auto glass repair

The damage repair process itself is as follows:

1. We degrease the treated area from the inside and outside with a swab moistened with an alcohol solution.
2. Remove the nozzle from the syringe, squeeze out a little polymer and distribute it along the entire length of the damage.
3. After this, we place an adhesive plastic film on the damaged area. We take as many small fragments of film as are necessary to cover the entire crack. No force should be used in this case.
4. Lightly press the glass from the inside so that the edges of the damage separate. This way the polymer will get between them. Make sure that the force is not excessive - this may increase the size of the defect.
5. We perform a visual inspection at an angle of 45 degrees - we should not see the defect. If it is noticeable, repeat the process again.
6. We place the car in direct sunlight and wait for the polymer to harden for half an hour to an hour.
7. After the polymer has hardened, remove the plastic. Using the blade included in the kit, we remove excess rubber elements.
8. Wipe the surface with a swab containing an alcohol solution.

Windshield chip repair

The windshield must be clean, dry and cool (not exposed to sunlight).

Procedure:

1. Remove glass shards from the chip (with a vacuum cleaner or a pin).
2. Remove the protective film from the ring from the set and stick the ring onto the chip (the protrusion should be directed upward).
3. Remove the protective film from the other side of the ring and install the appilator on the ring (align the protrusions).
4. Place the syringe in the appilator hole.
5. Pull the syringe plunger to the mark and turn it to secure it with the stopper (wait 30 seconds for air to escape from the chip).
6. Release the piston from the stopper (the piston will lower).
7. Smoothly press the piston until resistance appears.
8. We repeat the air removal procedure (steps 5-7) 3-4 times.

1. Release the syringe plunger and leave it in the down position for 15 minutes.
2. Check that the chip is filled with repair compound (on the inside of the glass). If there are voids, repeat the air removal procedure (steps 5-7).
3. Remove the applicator and ring residue with a blade.
4. Cover the chip with cling film.
5. Place the car in the sun for 20 minutes to polymerize the composition (on a cloudy day for 1 hour).
