1AZ-FE/FSE 2.0 - Toyota engine: characteristics, oil, problems


The Japanese largest corporation Toyota released a new brand of AZ automobile engines at the beginning of this century; they replaced the S series of engines. The 3S-FE engine, with a high rating for use in the middle class, replaced the 1AZ-FE.

Malfunctions and repairs

  1. The weak point of the engine design is the attachment of the head to the block. During operation, the threads in the block are destroyed, breaking the tightness of the connection. After this, antifreeze leaks or gas leaks from one cylinder to another appear. Toyota produces special threaded bushings that are screwed into the body of the block. After 2007, the defect does not occur since the unit was modernized.
  2. If fuel consumption is increased on the 1AZ FSE engine, it is recommended to conduct computer diagnostics of the operating parameters of the injection system. One of the defects is low pressure of the first pump. The cause is deposits on the filter element installed in the fuel tank. The part is washed with carburetor cleaner or replaced.
  3. At the same time, it is recommended to inspect the fine fuel filter located inside the fuel module located in the tank. Repair consists of replacing the part. When assembling the module, it is necessary to install the parts correctly, since an error during installation leads to a stop in the supply of gasoline.
  4. Noise from the intake manifold at low engine speeds or at idle. Design defect; repair requires installation of an upgraded part.
  5. Engine vibrations at idle speed. They arise due to design features. You can wash the throttle and injector, check the condition of the supports. The vibrations decrease, but do not disappear completely.
  6. Jerks when picking up speed indicate contamination of the throttle assembly and the valves that regulate the geometry of the intake manifold. It is necessary to clean the parts from carbon deposits.
  7. Some engines are equipped with an exhaust gas recirculation system, which contributes to the formation of carbon deposits in the intake manifold. Because of this, the control unit does not work correctly, especially when starting a cold engine.
  8. A defect in the ignition system is the breakage of the coil tips. This causes misfires. Repair consists of replacing the damaged part.

Weaknesses and disadvantages of the 1AZ-FE engine

The manufacturer does not indicate the exact service life of the 1AZ-FE engine. But a mileage of 300 thousand km with proper maintenance will not cause problems with the engine. With high reliability, troubles arise; this unit cannot be called absolutely problem-free.

Breakdowns and elimination:

  • The cylinder head mounting thread is broken. Externally it appears as antifreeze leaks on the rear wall. This design miscalculation can lead to overheating, geometry failure, and the block can be thrown away. The problem is solved by improving the threads of the existing cylinder block or installing a new block with an improved modification. The problem of weak cylinder head threads was corrected by Toyota in 2007.


The oil pump is located in the crankcase and is driven by an additional chain.

  • Increased engine vibration at idle speed can be treated by cleaning the throttle, idle air valve, injectors, EGR system (only 1AZ has it on the Japanese market), and replacing the support pads.
  • When carbon deposits appear in the unit, jerky operation of the 1AZ engine is felt, associated with a dirty throttle valve or intake manifold. If cleaning them does not bring results, then the reason is the VVT-i clutch or the lambda probe.
  • In Japan, the power unit was equipped with an EGR system, which resulted in the formation of carbon deposits and floating speed, followed by a loss of traction, a general delay in the operation of the machine, and an increase in fuel consumption. This disadvantage can be corrected by turning off the valve.
  • The geometry fails when the internal combustion engine overheats, which leads to replacement with a contract motor.
  • Using gasoline below AI-95 leads to malfunction of the fuel pump and injectors.

The main achievement of the 1AZFE modification engine is the lightweight aluminum cylinder block and the VVT-i gas distribution system. The system consists of an electronic throttle valve. The main disadvantage of the Japanese engine modification 1AZFE is the thermostat. It begins to act up in the harsh Russian winters. There are no problems with the generator. The generator can only be repaired after a mileage of 200 thousand kilometers.

Another feature of the budget engine is its operation on a lean mixture. Since injection occurs in the cylinders. Then the fuel evaporates and rises to the spark plugs, where the gas mixture is ignited.

Attention! The gearboxes for this 1AZFE engine are mechanical and automatic. If the engine works well with the mechanics, then with the four-speed automatic transmission there are problems with the forced engagement of the transmission. Experienced mechanics say that this is a problem with the automatic transmission rather than the 1AZFE engine.

Toyota powertrain design

The lightweight aluminum cylinder block and the excellent VVT-i gas distribution system were important achievements of the unit. The electronic throttle made the engine easier to operate, made it more stable and eliminated a number of potential breakdowns. The cylinder axis has a design feature - an offset relative to the crankshaft axis. This was done to increase the service life of the sleeves.

The plant did not determine the service life of the engine, but reviews allow us to form an opinion about the service life of the unit. A mileage of 300,000 km is considered normal. With higher mileage, problems arise that indicate serious wear and tear of the main mechanisms and parts.

The attachment runs for a long time and does not cause problems. The generator on some cars requires replacement after 200,000 km. In the cooling system, problems can only be caused by the thermostat, which does not like the Russian winter. Gearboxes for 1AZ engine

The boxes were installed with traditional mechanical and automatic ones. The 6-speed manual serves quite well and does not cause any problems. Automatic machines are distinguished by unconventional behavior in D4 modes and some variants of forced transmission engagement. But this is not a question for the engine, but for the automatic transmission itself. The structure of the box is quite complex, and one of the big problems for owners of such cars with an automatic transmission will be the high cost of repairs.

List of internal combustion engine modifications

In total, the 1AZ series has two engine modifications. Let's look at what models these are:

  • 1AZFE. This is what we are talking about at the moment. This motor appeared in 2000 and is still produced to this day. This is the base model, with compression ratios of 9.6 and 9.8;
  • 1AZFSE (D4). It differs in compression ratio, as the following parameters 10.5 and 11 have been added. The engine power has been slightly increased. If the first model has a maximum of 150 hp, then the second model has 150 - 155 hp.
