The trunk of the Ford Focus 2 does not open. How to open the fifth door yourself and make repairs. How much does it cost to work at a service center?

Ford Focus 2 has gained wide popularity not only in the Russian market, but also in European countries, the USA, China, and India. Car enthusiasts are happy to buy sedans, hatchbacks, and station wagons from Ford because of their reliability, ease of repair and comfortable suspension. However, with a mileage of more than 100,000 kilometers, the following malfunction often occurs: the trunk of a Ford Focus 2 does not open. The problem appears unexpectedly and is noticed on both restyled and pre-restyled models.

How to open the trunk of a Ford Focus 2 sedan

It was a long time ago, in 2013, in January.
In the first year of owning a car. But for some reason I only now decided to write about this problem and its solution. I think this information will be useful. We're talking about the Focus 2 sedan dorestyle. It all happened suddenly. There were absolutely no prerequisites. Just one day, closing the trunk and getting behind the wheel, I saw a message on the on-board computer that the trunk was open. I got out of the car to check and was very surprised when I realized that the trunk did not respond to the open button at all. Although it remained closed. The remote control on the ignition key also did not help solve the problem.

What to do if the trunk of Focus 2 does not open

I came home and began to look for a solution. After reading the forums and studying the diagram, I realized that I would have to climb into the trunk through the passenger compartment. What needs to be done, in order.

We take a flashlight, recline the rear seats and climb inside the luggage compartment. First you need to remove the fleecy upholstery of the lid. It is attached to simple dowel-nail type pistons. If the dowel does not unscrew, then pry it up with a screwdriver and pull it out, then the shirt. The same fastener is in the front, where the radiator is (you can practice).

When all the pistons are removed, remove the upholstery. There are still a couple of spring clips left in the area of the lowering handle. You can safely pull them or pry them with something, they are strong. They are pictured just below.

Now you can remove the upholstery from the trunk and continue. Our task is to unscrew the trunk lock. That's what I did. But you can also apply voltage directly to the lock contacts (if the motor is working properly). To do this, you will need a small battery from an uninterruptible power supply, or you can connect wires, for example, from a cigarette lighter. You need to apply “plus” to pin 1 and “minus” to pin 2 of the lock, they are labeled on the connector. I will attach the diagrams below. Below is a photo of the removed connector. The numbering on the lock block is from left to right. On the chip, accordingly, it’s the other way around.

Three torx screws that need to be removed to remove the lock.

The lock will remain on the hinge and the lid will open. Then you need to disassemble the lock a little and press the latch to release it.

Here is the removed mechanical and electrical parts with motor and limit switch

Restoring trunk wiring

The trunk is already open. We tighten the rubber corrugation of the cable and this is what we see.

In my case, two of the six wires were completely broken. The rest are on the verge. The fact is that they are all the same black color, so the purpose can only be determined by dialing a tester to the lock connector.

The remaining wires go to the license plate light and the trunk release button. Below is the pinout for the trunk lock connector. View of the plug. Pay attention to the numbering of contacts. Below is an excerpt from the electrical diagram, the numbering is the same. The "open" position is shown.

On the lock connector:

  • 1st Tailgate Release (positive polarity pulse to the lock motor, comes from the CAN bus)
  • 2nd Ground (mass)
  • 3rd Ajar Switch (trunk limit switch, signal goes to CAN)
  • 4th Luggage Compartment Lamp

Other symptoms when the wires are broken (variations are possible): - “trunk open” lights up on the CU - the light in the trunk does not light up (when the lid is open) - does not blink when turning the turns when setting the standard security

Parsing the circuit

Judging by the diagram, the opening button controls the trunk activator with a pulse of negative polarity, sending it to CAN. Where does a positive impulse come from at pin 1 of the connector? Pin 3 is the trunk switch. If it is connected to ground, then the CAN bus receives a signal that the trunk is closed. As soon as there is a rupture (or the trunk is opened), the on-board computer will display a message that the trunk is open. At the same time, when the switch breaks contact 3 of the limit switch, contact 4 closes to ground and the light in the trunk comes on.

I connected the wires with an extended harness of elastic wires. Moreover, I completely replaced the entire section of six wires. I isolated the twists and placed them back into the corrugation. Six years have passed since then, and the problem has not arisen again.

Now you know what to do if the trunk of your Focus 2 does not open. If you have any questions, write in the comments, I will try to answer and help.

Opening the trunk from the passenger compartment on a Ford Focus 2 sedan

The second generation Ford Focus does not have many congenital diseases. This is probably why it became a bestseller in our market. And yet there are some dirty tricks that the second Focus is capable of. One of them is a tightly and irrevocably locked trunk. This especially angers owners of sedans, because in hatches and station wagons it’s easy to get to the trunk lock. The situation is further complicated by the fact that during numerous upgrades the Focus received different designs of trunk locks, and if we add a variety of configurations to this, the task becomes even more difficult. But we will try to figure out how to open the trunk from the passenger compartment on a Ford Focus 2.

Car reviews

Car owners note that the car is reliable and can travel more than 300,000 kilometers without problems. The engine does not require special attention other than timely maintenance. The suspension does not fail until the 100,000 kilometer mark, the body does not rot.

Among the minuses, it is worth noting the low ground clearance and plastic mud flaps, which break off when driving over uneven surfaces.

Judging by the comments of customers, in the new Ford Focus 2 restyling models the trunk does not open much less often. The manufacturer takes care of consumers and changes the composition of the sheath for moving wiring. All bugs related to key flooding have also been fixed.

Why doesn't the trunk open on a Ford Focus 2?

On the simplest and first modifications of the second Focus, the lock did not have an access restriction button.

Some Focuses since 2004 (with 1.8/2 l engines) have already received this button. In the first case, without a button, it is almost impossible to open the lock without a key. The only option here is to unscrew the lock mate from inside the trunk, and this is very difficult to do, especially in cramped conditions and without a special tool. Here is a photo of the new and old style trunk latches.

Here is a diagram of the castle.

As you can see, there is no obvious difference, but the emergency trunk release button is located in different places. It is indicated by arrows in both figures. First, let's open the lock with a new latch option.

Opening the trunk without a key. Method No. 1

Let's look at what needs to be clicked.

To get into the trunk, we need to fold back the rear seat . This is not easy to do, but it is possible. The fact is that the backrest fastening latches should, in theory, be opened from the trunk. Therefore, we will shamelessly bend the back until we reach the latches. Next we do this:

  1. We remove the rear backrest and unload the trunk through the interior to free up maximum space for work.
  2. The photo above shows the plastic lid, and there is a blue area marked on it that needs to be cut out with a sharp knife.
  3. Remove the plastic cover.
  4. Using a thin screwdriver, activate the emergency trunk release system, as shown in the figure below.

The trunk does not open - logbook Ford Focus Hatchback Purple HEDGEHOG 2008 on DRIVE2

The beginning of the story happened back in the summer. The trunk could not be opened using either the button or the key. Mentally, I had already buried the castle. Actually, I took everything apart and reassembled it and the problem went away. But then history repeated itself. As luck would have it, with a whole trunk of things. I took it all apart again. There is no emergency opening of the lock. To open the trunk you need (I didn’t take a photo): - take out all the contents including the spare wheel and the jack. - next to the lock loop there are two black plugs. We remove them and see the bolts that hold the hinge. Unscrew it. -Next, remove the 4 pistons from the black trim. -Pull the trim and at the same time pull the fifth door. Hurray, the trunk is open. -Next, remove the trunk trim and unscrew the lock. We have the lock in our hands, a black lining and a bracket. This whole thing has grown into one detail))) Next we need to open the lock. If you look at the lock from the interior, there is a lever for the mechanical part on the right inside the lock. This is what you need to press. I did it with wire.

Hurray we have the castle in our hands. Next, remove the plastic pad of the lock. We see that the lock consists of two parts - mechanical and electrical. They are connected by an unknown bolt - an internal pentagon with a pin in the middle.

The same bolt

We drill out the pin and then unscrew it using improvised means. We clean the mechanical part from dirt. And it turns out that it all works. Next I started checking the electrical part. And it turned out that the motor was jamming. Let's disassemble the electrical part.

Electrical cause of trunk lock failure

In those configurations of the second Focus that do not provide for manual opening of the lock, it opens using a servo drive. Failures occur most often due to wiring faults. The designers laid the wiring harness into the trunk lid so that when the lid is open, the wires are slightly stretched. Naturally, this cannot continue indefinitely, and at one point they simply grind together. Then the lock does not respond to the unlock button, the servo is silent.

We try to close and check the integrity of the wiring harness.

If we are dealing with just such a case, then it makes sense to try to move the corrugated hose in which the wiring harness is laid, while simultaneously pressing the release button. The harness is located in the upper left corner of the trunk lid, and can be reached through the gap between the body and the trunk lid. If this option does not work, then you will have to remove the back of the rear seat as described above and get into the trunk from the inside.

After unloading the trunk, we will remove the trim. It is attached to 13 pistons, but after removing the fasteners, the casing will remain hanging on the lock latch. We lift the casing and get to the lock and unscrew the fastening screws with a powerful screwdriver. After this, you can open the trunk, the lock will remain in the latch. We find out the reason, find the place where the wires are frayed and restore their integrity. Good luck in troubleshooting and good luck to everyone!

Opening the trunk from the passenger compartment on a Ford Focus 2 car

The second generation Ford Focus has quite a few congenital diseases. This is probably why it became a blockbuster in our market. How to open the trunk of a BMW E39 without a battery

Opening the trunk: the real way

So, you are faced with an unpleasant situation, and you cannot open the trunk on the second Focus.
The trunk button does not perform its function, the lid does not respond to the remote control. What to do? Unfortunately, there is no emergency opening option on the car. It comes to mind to take a crowbar and get to the salon by force, but we are not considering this option, since it will be very expensive. In order to open the fifth door on your own, you need to recline the rear seats of the car and take out all the things that might interfere. Next, we climb inside and perform the following actions:

  • remove the plugs near the lock hinge and unscrew the fastening bolts;
  • remove the pistons securing the trim;
  • we pull the trim and the cover, after which the fifth door should open.

That's all, as you can see, opening the fifth door is quite easy. After this, it will be quite simple to remove the lock, disassemble it and find out the cause of the malfunction. For example, repair the trunk lock. We have already talked about some of them. There are other options. For example, if the trunk can be opened using the remote control, but there is some kind of malfunction with the alarm. In this case, you need to reprogram it, after which everything should work correctly.

Ford Focus two is a modern and reliable car, but the presence of a large amount of electronics leads to the fact that some system may fail. For this reason, a problem arises when the car trunk cannot be opened. If you encounter such a problem, then you need to act in the following sequence: open the lid, disassemble the lock, find out the cause and eliminate it.

Unfortunately, Ford has not provided an emergency cable or hatch to open the trunk lid in the event of a malfunction.

  1. If the car comes with a flip key with trunk opening keys, then the first thing you need to do is try to open it using the remote key. This method helps in about 60 percent of cases. The fact is that two different wires are responsible for the electrical signal to the lock: from the radio channel and directly from the lock key. If the wire responsible for the button on the trunk is broken, then the key fob will cope with opening the fifth door.
  2. The next step is to check the fuse in the cabin. To do this, open the car’s operating instructions and find out the number of the fuse link, which is responsible for powering the trunk lock. The fuse box is located under the glove box and is held in place by two latches.
  3. If the radio channel and the fuse do not help, then you need to recline the rear row of seats and look into the luggage compartment. On the driver's side, a thick plume comes out of the cabin, which you need to actively move, and then try to open the fifth door again. You can invite a friend who will press the button while trying to move the train. This method often helps if broken wires come into contact and a signal passes through them.
  4. The last and most difficult option is to remove the trim from the inside of the fifth door and unscrew the bolts that hold the saber with the key. The removed saber will allow you to access the button for cleaning from water and rust.

There are several reasons for the locking device to jam: grinding of the wires running from the button in the cabin to the lock, a malfunction of the drive responsible for opening the mechanism, or mechanical wear of the latches, latches and other parts. Let's look at real ways to unlock the trunk on different Ford Focus models.

Ways to open the trunk of a Ford Focus 1

First, check to see if the blocked line is due to signaling problems. If this is not the case, proceed to remove the rear row of seats and enter the closed luggage compartment from the inside.

Remove the lock from the fastenings. and the shoe is open.

Try opening a case where all the wires are hidden. Ford designers put the wires in a corrugation between the trunk lid and the body to give the wires a little stretch when opening, causing them to fray and break.

Restoring the integrity of the wire ensures that the locking mechanism is working.

The interior of the trunk of a Ford Focus hatchback can be made using a similar principle; you just need to remove the liners before finally removing the lock.

Trunk lock repair

To troubleshoot problems, it is necessary to remove the lever that connects the door mechanism with the electric drive - to do this, turn the plastic stopper to the left and remove the curved part of the lever.

The lock is secured to the trunk with two nuts that can be unscrewed with a 8mm socket. When removing the assembly from the door, do not forget to remove the lever connecting the system with the locking mechanism itself. After an external inspection of the assembly, you can remove the retaining ring and carefully remove the rotating part. Try not to lose the small key mounted near the lock cylinder. Now you need to clean, lubricate and reinstall everything. Turn the lock to the right and back with the key. If rotation is difficult, use WD40 fluid.

The mechanism is installed in the reverse order. Thus, the problem of locking the lock can be eliminated in just half an hour, but be careful with the design of the mechanism and the casing to maintain the integrity and functionality of all parts.
