Do-it-yourself repair of car door hinges

The question of how to restore door hinges on a car arises for many drivers. The solution to this problem is simple. But first you need to inspect the element for damage. If the hinges have noticeable defects, corrosion or deformation, restoration will be required. This is usually typical for new cars with high mileage.

Required materials and tools

Repairing a door hinge on an old car will require the following tools and materials:

The procedure for repairing door hinges with dismantling the door

Replacing door hinges or their axles can be done either with or without removing the door. It is advisable to remove the part if the wear of the elements is sufficiently large.

Door hinge that needs replacing

In this case, repairs are performed in the following sequence:

Now you can check the quality of the work performed.

Without dismantling

Repairing car door hinges is possible without removing the doors. In this case, the hinges will have to be repaired, not replaced. You can restore them in this way:

Adjusting hinges without removing doors

Sometimes this is done, for example, on very old and inexpensive cars or before selling.

How are repairs carried out?

The choice of method and technology by which repair work will be carried out directly depends on the nature of the breakdown. Before drawing up a work plan, our craftsmen conduct an inspection and find out the cause of the breakdown.

Car door corrosion

One of the most common damages in this case is the development of corrosion processes in the lower part of the doors. The first sign is the appearance of small reddish-brown dots on the paintwork. Over time, if not addressed, they will cause through holes. Repair in this case involves welding and replacement of damaged elements.

Sagging on hinges

The “symptoms” of a sagging door on its hinges are the following:

  • opening/closing requires effort;
  • extraneous sounds are heard when moving;
  • difficulties arise with the functioning of locks and window regulators;
  • seals allow cold air and rain to pass through.

To eliminate this breakdown, the bolts are tightened and the cause that caused them to loosen is eliminated.

Adjusting car door hinges

Adjustment of car door hinges is necessary when they are severely sagging or have gaps. Sometimes it happens that the hinges themselves are fine, but their position has changed. This happens from time to time or as a result of an accident. Also, the question of how to adjust door hinges on a used car also arises after replacing the seal.

With gaps

Uneven gaps can occur after an accident or when the door is not installed correctly for some other reason. This is not only unsightly, but also interferes with the normal closing or opening of doors. This problem can be resolved without removing the body element. To do this, you need to place a washer of the required thickness under the hinge. But this is a last resort when nothing else helps.

Tightening hinges for gaps

Therefore, it is necessary to loosen the hinges and, when raising or lowering the door, set the correct gaps. You can move it forward or backward. It may be necessary to adjust the gaps of adjacent body elements.

After replacing the seal

The new seal is often slightly thicker or thinner than the old one. Therefore, closing the door becomes more difficult. And sometimes it opens very poorly. To adjust them, tighten or loosen the hinges.

When the door sag

In heavily used cars or if used improperly, the doors may sag. This leads to difficulties with opening them, the appearance of an unpleasant squeak when driving and other problems.

Spacers in the hinge to prevent sagging doors

You can eliminate the defect in the following way:

The defect must be eliminated in a timely manner. Sagging doors can cause scratches and chips on the thresholds, which will then lead to corrosion.

Good day everyone!)

For a long time I didn’t like the way the driver’s door closes, the reason for this was the slightly sagging hinges on the driver’s door... It’s not that there was much play, you could put washers, but do it already). Digesting loops is a lot of hassle. Somehow while driving I came across an article on how to solve the problem without overcooking the loops! I lost the author of the article (I think many will be interested in this procedure)

I will try to describe the process myself, which is actually not complicated.
— We are buying a set of new door hinges.
— Now we need to knock out the pin from the hinge so that the outer part of the hinge can be installed instead of the old one on the door.

Ways to eliminate door misalignment

As already noted, you can bring this skewed car part into normal working condition directly on your own, without going to a service station. You must first determine the exact cause so that you can then make the necessary repairs to eliminate the problem.

For example, if the sagging is caused by the wear of the axle, and the hinges function normally, then there is no point in changing them, but when the hinge is already fairly worn out, there is no way to do without replacing it. At the same time, there is often no need to change it, and the door hinges only need to be adjusted. First, the counter part of the lock is dismantled to make adjustment more convenient. After closing the door, check whether it has moved down or up. If there is still a displacement, the hinges are loosened, for which the door must be slightly raised or lowered.

A careful inspection of the edge of the door near the lock also provides the appropriate algorithm. If it is sagging, then slightly loosen the fastening of the lower hinge, after which thin metal plates (one, two or three) are carefully placed under it to lift the door. If everything is the other way around, that is, the side with the lock rises up, a similar procedure is carried out with the loop at the top.

Perhaps the door is too recessed into the interior. In this case, the loops need to be moved slightly towards the edge. When, on the contrary, the door bulges, the hinges should be moved towards the car dealership. In terms of control, it is necessary to ensure that the door is positioned strictly at right angles to the ground, otherwise it cannot be avoided from jamming. Having carried out clear regulation in all directions, at the end of the repair they check the location of the lock. It is possible that it will also have to be regulated.

Here is an approximate algorithm for how to carry out repairs on your own. If all step-by-step actions are performed correctly, the door will open and close without effort, as before. If not, the entire procedure will most likely have to be repeated again to achieve the desired result.

Determining the cause of a sagging door

First, about visual and other signs that the driver's door in the car is sagging, requiring immediate repair. Most often, the signal is an unusual force that must be constantly applied to close or open it. Often this flaw is accompanied by a grinding, knocking or ringing noise during a trip. Another sure sign is moisture entering the interior near the door, even if it is closed.

Experienced drivers also make an unmistakable diagnosis when deep or small scratches remain on the threshold of the car - traces from the opening door. Finally, there is an old test for such sagging:

  1. We need to open it.
  2. Grasp the bottom and top edges.
  3. Try shaking it up and down.

The presence of play will confirm that it is sagging. To determine what needs to be done in this case, the reasons for the deficiency are determined. Long-term practice shows that the causes most often are:

  • Warped door hinges. What most often results from broken body geometry.
  • Worn door hinges.
  • Weakening of one or another door hinge.

Pieces of tin

A sagging body part can be lifted on almost any car. Most often, the driver's door sags, and when closed, it rises slightly. The pins on the top and bottom hinges wear out over time. You can easily correct such sagging on your own, without having any special knowledge or skills.

Work must be carried out in the following order:

This procedure does not take much time, does not require special skills, abilities, or money. The problem can be solved in this way in 5-15 minutes. Compared to washers, such tin spacers are easier to install on a bolt, since it does not need to be completely unscrewed.

For this method, you only need a bolt corresponding to the diameter of the finger, which is best wrapped with insulating tape in order not to damage the paint. Insert the bolt in the area of the lower hinge between the door surface and the body with the head facing up. After this, gently press on the door surface several times.

It is important not to overdo it, since getting the door back will be much more difficult. As a result of this procedure, it falls into place and the sagging is eliminated.

Thus, the order of this procedure will be as follows:
This simple technology allows in most cases to eliminate sagging.

Dashboard

This is the most problematic area of most used cars. To understand where exactly the “play” is, you need to try pressing the plastic panels one by one while driving and listen to see if the sound has disappeared (therefore, it is better if there is an assistant in the car). You can also try to insert an unnecessary plastic card into the cracks that cause the most suspicion. If the grinding noise has disappeared, then the “cricket” has been found. All that's left is to get rid of him.

Healthy! To determine exactly at which joint the unpleasant sound occurs, it is enough to inspect the surfaces. As a rule, abrasions appear in such places.

There are two options for how to do this - simpler and more complicated:

  • We completely dismantle the dashboard and put Modelin (one sheet of sound insulation will cost 760 rubles), Bitoplast (a sheet will cost 250 rubles) or so-called mushrooms (plates with small “outgrowths” that make the joints even tighter) into the joints. Particular attention should be paid to the panel's hinged elements (glove box lid, fuse box, clock, etc.).

We recommend: 5 effective ways to get rid of foggy car windows

Healthy! Some people glue the joints with special tape or regular adhesive tape from the pharmacy.

  • Pour silicone grease into the cracks (a can of WD-40 with a spout will cost about 250 rubles) and wipe off the excess with a napkin.

Silicone grease is the fastest and cheaper option. But you shouldn’t expect it to work for a long time, so the procedure will have to be repeated periodically. Fortunately, this composition is not conductive, so you don’t have to worry about “shorting” the dashboard.

Healthy! If the dashboard of a car consists of many parts (such as in the Chevrolet Lacetti), which are attached with self-tapping screws, then one disassembly is enough for extraneous sounds to begin to appear in the car. If this element is a monolith (as in Renault Logan), then even a used car will not have problems with “crickets” in this area.
