Why do you need lubrication?

UAZ Patriot is a creation of the Russian automobile industry, the heart of which is located in the city of Ulyanovsk.
Of course, in some ways the domestic UAZ Patriot SUV is inferior to foreign ones, but in others it is not. One of the problems is that from the factory such a mechanism as the steering knuckle receives insufficient attention. Its design contains not only little, but practically no lubrication, which leads to adverse consequences. Already on the first day after purchasing a new SUV, motorists may notice an unpleasant sound of metal rubbing against metal. But, of course, such a phenomenon should be eliminated not because of an unpleasant sound, but in order to avoid an early failure of the fist.

The UAZ Patriot has two steering knuckles, which require maintenance from the first day after purchasing the SUV from the showroom. If you do not properly lubricate the product, then over time its working parts will wear out, become corroded and immediately fail. To protect yourself from unnecessary waste in the near future and your SUV from the need to replace new parts, you need to lubricate the steering knuckle in a timely manner, which will be sufficient for at least 60-80 thousand kilometers.

What is used for lubrication

The actual service life of a part depends not only on the presence of lubricants in the product, but also on the quality of these lubricants. The steering knuckle and CV joint experience heavy loads, and therefore heat up. Therefore, it should be taken into account that the material must not only have good anti-wear properties, but also withstand high temperatures.

The lubricant must also perform a protective function, protecting important structural elements from water, dust and sand. These negative factors, when they get into the steering knuckle, lead to its failure. The presence of a lubricant prevents these factors from entering the device structure even if the protective boots fail.

Thus, in order to lubricate the steering knuckles on a UAZ Patriot SUV, you need to use the well-known Litol-24 lubricant. One device will require about 400 grams of Litol-24. In the process of lubricating the steering knuckle, it is necessary to apply lubricant to the CV joint. For the CV joint, it is necessary to use CV joint grease-4M, which requires about 100 grams for one side.

Lubrication process

To thoroughly lubricate the steering knuckle and CV joint, it is necessary to remove these parts, clean the internal filling if necessary and apply new material. To carry out the work, you must perform the following steps:

  1. The UAZ Patriot car is placed on a flat surface and the handbrake is released.
  2. The front part must be jacked up and the wheel unscrewed.
  3. After the wheel is removed, it is necessary to unscrew the two bolts securing the brake caliper to the knuckle. There is no need to remove the brake hoses.
  4. Using a wrench set to “14”, you need to unscrew the five bolts securing the ball joint to the axle housing flange. The turn stop stop is removed.
  5. The flanges are separated by tapping with a hammer through a wooden block.
  6. After disconnecting the flanges, you can remove the steering knuckle.
  7. The removed device is fixed in a vice and the product is further disassembled for lubrication.
  8. The bolt is unscrewed at “14”. Loosen the locknut with a wrench set to “17” and unscrew the stop bolt to “12”.
  9. Next, using a “10” key, you need to unscrew the remaining 8 bolts that secure the cuff clip.
  10. The cuff and felt ring are removed.
  11. The king pin is removed using a special key set to “27”.
  12. The ball joint is marked in relation to the location of the fist and removed.
  13. The axle shaft with CV joint is removed from the steering knuckle.
  14. Next, the steering knuckle and CV joint are lubricated. If necessary, the inside of the fist must be cleaned with gasoline before doing this.
  15. After lubrication, all removed parts are assembled in the reverse order of removal.

At this point, the lubrication process is completed and after installation, a similar procedure is carried out on the other side of the car. To summarize, it should be noted that the presence of lubricant on all required parts allows them to last much longer.

How to replace the fist in a UAZ Patriot?

Now we know in what cases the steering knuckle requires attention from the owner of the UAZ Patriot. If it is determined that a part needs to be replaced, the owner is capable of making the repair himself.

For these purposes, you will need to use a small set of tools, namely:

  • mounting blade;
  • keys whose dimensions are respectively “10”, “14” and “17”.

The procedure for replacing an element in the UAZ 3160 is as follows:

  1. We install the rear wheels of the UAZ Patriot on supports to prevent the SUV from rolling away. Unscrew the hub nut.
  2. Use a jack to jack up the side of the front end where you want to replace the steering knuckle and remove the wheel. Because it will need to be removed.
  3. We unscrew the nut fastening of the lever, which we remove together with a set of shims for adjustment.
  4. Unscrew the bolts securing the kingpins and remove the lower cover.
  5. Remove the ball joint retaining bolt.
  6. It's time to press out the kingpins. After this action, remove the product.
  7. Let's move on to disassembling the hinge.
  8. We use a core to mark the location of the elements.
  9. We separate the components of the hinge.
  10. Using a vice, we fix the product (by the long element).
  11. There are balls inside the hinge that will need to be removed.
  12. For this purpose, we turn the short element in the direction of one of the leading balls. This way we provide space for the ball to come out from the back side. We do this until the balls come out completely. Withdrawal completed.
  13. We select new balls and assemble the knot.

The steering knuckle 19, stamped from 35X alloy steel, has a pin with two cylindrical journals with a diameter of 30 and 45 mm for the front wheel hub bearings, a journal with a diameter of 56 mm for the hub oil seal bushing , a massive flange with a collar with a diameter of 100 mm and a height of 3-5 mm for centering the brake shield.

The steering knuckle can be removed from the vehicle without removing the telescopic strut. To do this, you need to unscrew the nut connecting the front wheel hub with the front wheel drive and the self-locking nut securing the ball joint pin to the suspension arm.  

The steering knuckles can rotate freely on the pivots thanks to bearings in the form of two bronze bushings pressed into the eyes of the steering knuckles, and a thrust bearing 16 installed between the steering knuckle and the eye of the front axle beam.

The steering knuckle is a complex-shaped part, processed along the shank, from the inside and from the ends. Bronze bushings are pressed into the part in an oriented position. There are many threaded places, the forging weight is 17 kg.  

The steering knuckles are secured to the beams with pins. In order for the knuckle to rotate easily when turning the wheels, a socket is pressed into its lower hole. A cracker is placed at the bottom of the nest, which serves as a support for the heel. In addition, the socket has a floating bushing. Each steering knuckle has a wheel hub with two ball bearings, which is covered with a rubber band held in place by a cover.

The steering knuckles are checked using gauge A. The knuckle pin is inserted into the gauge hole so that the surface under the oil seal coincides with the gauge hole. The deformation of the lever is determined by the force with which the installation fingers are inserted into the holes of the fist. When deformed, a fist is necessary.

The steering knuckle can be removed from the vehicle without removing the telescopic strut. To do this, you need to unscrew the nut connecting the front wheel hub with the front wheel drive and the self-locking nut securing the ball joint pin to the suspension arm.

The steering knuckles of the axle are installed so that the axes of the front wheels are not horizontal. Due to this, the distance between the upper edges of the wheels is greater than between the lower ones (Fig. 205, a); a so-called wheel camber is created.  

For a steering knuckle, an example of copy turning of a shaped surface in a combination of longitudinal and transverse feed is shown.  

In addition to steering knuckles (profile washers), copiers (Fig. 6 - 18 6), driven by a rectilinearly moving rod, are used. The provisions given for steering knuckles remain valid for copiers.

Repair of the UAZ steering knuckle can be carried out either independently or by contacting a car repair shop. The cost of repair work will depend primarily on the price of the parts to be replaced.

The fist is drying up

If you have some experience and the necessary set of tools, having studied the instructions on how to disassemble and repair the steering knuckle, it is enough to buy the required spare parts and carry out all the repairs yourself. This will not only save money, but also gain new knowledge about the design of the car.

We must not forget about regular preventive measures, which consist of inspecting and assessing the condition of the steering knuckle clamping bushings, as well as identifying the presence of play in the front suspension.

Before you begin repairing the steering knuckle, you need to familiarize yourself with the features of its implementation.

  1. If Nyloc nuts are installed, they will definitely need to be replaced, as they have a special coating that prevents them from unscrewing and loosening the clamp. After screwing the nuts, this coating is destroyed.
  2. You cannot put the car on wheels if at least one drive shaft is disconnected from the hub, as this can lead to deformation or destruction of the hub bearing. If it is necessary to move the machine a short distance, the shaft must be returned to the hub and secured with a nut.
  3. Depending on the model of the car and the year of its manufacture, the UAZ knuckle has two modifications, in one of which the hubs are solid, and in the other they are hollow, which is determined by the presence of a hole.

Before starting repairs, the following manipulations are carried out.

  1. The car is put on the handbrake.
  2. Stops are placed under the rear wheels to prevent the car from moving.
  3. The front part of the car is raised with a jack or winch and fixed on supports.

On one of them there is a bipod; on the other there is no access to the longitudinal thrust. It is for these reasons that their prices differ.

Auto parts can be purchased at auto stores, car markets, and ordered on various websites. The right steering knuckle costs approximately 8,400 rubles, the price for the left one starts at 6,530 rubles. These are approximate prices for the UAZ-31519.

You should not save, even if the cost of domestic spare parts is higher than Chinese ones. More than likely, an expensive part will last much longer.

After installing the steering knuckle assembly with the hub, install a new or used, but on a different car, nut on the car and tighten it with a torque of 23 0 - 25 2 kgf-m. Unscrew the bolts securing the protective casing 4 (see Fig. 81) of the brake disc and remove it.

Combined grinding of the steering knuckles at low feed rates ensures long-term operation of the wheels. One set of wheels works for six months and processes 50 - 55 thousand parts. This example shows that combined grinding of precision surfaces at low feeds with an extended processing cycle is fully compensated by the high reliability of the technological process and the absence of long machine downtimes for wheel changes and adjustments.  

On the outer side, the steering knuckle has a pin designed to ensure the installation of the hub bearings / / of the front wheel. Before installing the hub, the oil seal ring 9 is pressed onto the axle, the bearing thrust ring 10 and the inner ring with rollers assembly 13 of the inner bearing are also installed.

In these cases, the steering knuckles are rejected. The wear of the conical holes for the levers is determined by the conical gauge. If the diameter of the hole for the pin bushings exceeds the permissible size, they are machined to a repair size. Wear of the journals for internal and external bearings is eliminated by iron plating or chrome plating followed by machining.  

A thrust ball bearing 21 is installed between the lower ear of the steering knuckle and the axle boss, protected from dust and dirt by a special stamped cap. The pins are completely unloaded from axial forces, since the vertical load is absorbed by the ball bearing.  

There is a grease nipple on the upper ear of the steering knuckle. Lubricant, pumped by a syringe through a grease nipple, enters the longitudinal channel inside the kingpin, and from it through radial holes and ring grooves on the outer surface of the kingpin to the bronze bushings. Lubricant is supplied to the thrust ball bearing from the lower radial hole along a longitudinal groove on the outer surface of the king pin. The longitudinal channel in the kingpin is closed from below with a plug. The hole for the king pin in the lower ear of the knuckle is closed with a plug that has a hole for excess grease to escape.  

On the lower arms of the steering knuckles there are special bolts 26 with spherical heads that limit the rotation of the wheels. The length of the bolts is adjusted so that their heads rest against the boss of the front axle at the maximum angle of rotation of the wheels in one direction or another.  

Tighten the steering knuckle nut with the wrench provided in the driver's tool kit until the wheel rotates tightly on the bearings. When tightening the nut, the wheel must be rotated so that the rollers are correctly positioned relative to the bearing rings. The wheel tightened in this way should stop immediately after a push by hand.  

A gap of no more than 0 15 mm is allowed between the upper head of the steering knuckle and the upper end of the beam head.  

Tighten the steering knuckle axle nut with the wrench provided in the driver's tool kit so that the wheel hub is braked by the bearings. When tightening the nut, the wheel must be turned all the time so that the rollers take the correct position in the bearings. If a wheel with tightened bearings is pushed by hand, it should stop immediately.

Oh, it’s been a long time since I wrote anything about the life of my beloved car. Unfortunately, the winter season was extremely poor in adventures and trips; I was completely absorbed by family, work and moving to a new apartment. But this does not mean that Patrick stood idle and was sad, quite the opposite.

Every day he played the role of a hard worker’s car, every morning he started up regularly and took me on business, patiently made his way through Moscow traffic jams and, like a loaded camel, carried furniture from Ikea to a new house. In this routine, I didn’t even notice how the numbers on the odometer exceeded 100 thousand km, the first serious milestone for any car.

But I began to notice something else: the car began to handle extremely poorly, stopped holding its course, the reaction on the steering wheel decreased greatly, when passing obstacles, extraneous sounds began to be heard in the area of ​​the front suspension, and the climax of all this was that several times, at a speed of 80 km hour I caught a “shimmy!” It was impossible to postpone the repair any further, it was simply not safe.

A quick inspection of the pit revealed several obvious problems: 1) the kingpins on both wheels were quite weakened and there was a lot of play, 2) The boots looked simply terrible, the mirror coating was completely missing, and in its place there were traces of deep corrosion.

The protective cuffs were dented all around, and when the steering wheel was turned, a stream of black liquid flowed out from under the oil seal. 3) The icing on the cake, all 4 tie rod ends were destroyed. Well, these are the consequences of off-road driving and careless attitude to technology. But there is no time to be discouraged; we suddenly place an order for the necessary spare parts.

Naturally, we ordered spare parts from Vaksoil. In my personal opinion, and that of most sensible UAZ owners, these are the highest quality and most competent components for our cars! The work with clients is also excellent, the manager found out what trouble I had with my car and competently presented the products that interested me.

Delivery also turned out to be very fast, from the moment of placing the order to the moment of receiving the spare parts from the “Business Lines” warehouse, only 5 days passed, the cost of delivery of two SHOPK, a steering knuckle lever and a set of kingpins was only 550 rubles and this is from the sunny city of Biysk! And here is the actual photo of what I received.

Spare parts and lubricants are in the trunk, we’re going to the garage... There’s probably no point in describing the disassembly process. Everything was unscrewed quite well, not counting the bolts that secure the entire steering knuckle to the bridge; water got into the threads and corrosion took its toll.

Steering knuckle design

The most common steering knuckle design is the so-called “straight cross”. Although most of them look almost the same, there are differences in size. One may be a little more, the other a little less.

The steering knuckle is usually made of steel. Thanks to this material, such an important part can withstand enormous loads. But with all this, the lighter the knuckle part is, the better the shock absorption and controllability will be. Therefore, designers try to obtain an optimal weight-to-strength ratio.

Seats on auto parts are specially designed for attaching mud rings, which prevent all kinds of debris from penetrating the wheel bearing. The housing is designed in such a way that it is convenient to screw suspension elements onto it.

You may be wondering why most of the article is devoted specifically to the UAZ car? The answer is: because it is a domestic car that has proven itself well - easy to maintain, reliable on the road.

Many people underestimate this car, believing that foreign cars are better, but this is far from the case. In many respects, the UAZ, even produced back in the Soviet Union, is superior to many modern SUVs, but, unfortunately, it remains unrecognized.

Although made of steel, the steering knuckle is one of the weak points of any car, often due to bad roads. It is worth watching, because at a crucial moment it is this part of the steering that can help avoid an accident.

This is the machine unit

The unit that enters the steering knuckle of the UAZ front axle is a ball pin. It takes on the entire load that falls on the front axle while driving. These loads are especially high when driving off-road and rough terrain.

During the operation of the car, this pivot unit quickly wears out, which leads to the appearance of gaps and play in the front suspension.

Repair of the steering knuckle is necessary in the following cases.

  1. Replacing the bearings or seal of the assembly.
  2. Worn ball pin.
  3. The steering knuckle is deformed and requires replacement of the ball joint.

Often, steering knuckle breakdowns are caused by poor-quality selection of components installed during its assembly, namely a discrepancy:

  • diameter of the support and inserted hemisphere;
  • thickness and seat of the oil seal;
  • thickness of the liners.

Hinge assembly step by step

This procedure is quite important, because the resource of the mechanism as a whole depends on its correctness.

So, let's act:

  1. The long element is still in the vice.
  2. Install the main ball.
  3. We install a short fist on it. Here we draw attention to the need to align the marks that were previously applied using a core.
  4. We immerse three balls in turn inside the product, and at this time we turn the main ball to the sides.
  5. We spread our fists at a distance of 1 cm, and then install the 4th ball.
  6. Note that the diameter of the main ball should be 26.9 mm. In addition, each of the hinges must be connected to the components of the same group.
  7. After assembling the hinge, carefully lubricate the cavity and mount the previously removed products using the reverse procedure.

Oil seal: purpose and installation

This element is a very significant product in the entire design of the axle. It has the appearance of a rounded structure and is located directly on the fist. When replacing a new oil seal, install it only after applying lubricant. The product is necessary to prevent moisture and dirt from penetrating inside the hinge. Please note that the part is a consumable item and requires replacement at certain intervals.

How to protect against wear

Those car owners who recently bought a UAZ often hear unpleasant sounds when turning the steering wheel, as if metal was rubbing against metal without any lubrication. This is often the case. How can you protect the fists on a domestic car? This is where the ubiquitous lithol comes to the rescue.

If you have no experience in car repairs, then you can coat the left steering knuckle, like the right one, only on the outside. For people more knowledgeable in auto mechanics, this method is suitable: unscrew the circular oil seal, move it to the center of the car and add more lithol into the resulting gap.

These operations are performed after cleaning the car from shipping paint or polyethylene. You should also check for the presence of a seal.

Possible damage

Despite the fact that the steering knuckle is one of the most “long-lasting” parts of a car, its damage is just a matter of time. Sometimes the protective casing may crack, allowing dust and sand access inside, so it is worth periodically monitoring its integrity.

If it fails, the best solution is to replace it. You can often see oil streaks on the steering knuckle, indicating that the oil seal/axle shaft joint is not tight. Here you should simply change the oil seal to a better one. Such problems are often found in cars that have been involved in an accident.

Signs of a malfunction of the VAZ 2107 steering knuckle and possible symptoms

Deformation is a problem that is encountered most often in practice. The reasons vary, but most often they lie in a strong shock to the suspension when the car passes uneven sections of the road. Or it occurs due to physical impact after the accident has occurred.

There are main signs by which a malfunction is noticed:

Based on the last two signs, we can say that there is a deviation from the standard indicators during the operation of the unit. A full suspension diagnostic is carried out to further check for faults. Sometimes problems appear due to the fact that the steering rods or silent blocks are worn out, or the wheel alignment angles were incorrectly adjusted. Because of this, the axles on the VAZ 2107 may also fail.
