How to tension the alternator belt on your own?

Moreover, you don’t even have to spend too much time on this procedure; on average, the work will take about half an hour. Features of tensioning the generator belt using an adjustment bar

This tensioning method is not suitable for all cars; it is best to apply it to VAZ classics. Using an adjustment bar greatly simplifies the work process, so this method is best suited for carrying out this procedure at home.

Before you start tensioning the belt, you first need to attach the generator to the car engine crankcase, which is recommended to be done using a long bolt. At the same time, the generator should still move freely up and down. After this, find an arched bar at the top of the device, which has a slot in it and is secured with a nut, which also secures the correct position of the generator itself. Next, we directly tension the belt by performing the following steps:

1. Unscrew the fastening nut, which is located on the generator plate.

2. Using a mounting spatula or other available tool, carefully press the generator away from the engine.

3. Tighten the nut back.

4. Check how this affected the belt tension force. If it still sags, the procedure must be repeated.

We use an adjusting bolt to tighten the generator belt.

A more modern and universal way to tension an alternator belt that is too long is to use an adjusting bolt. In order to achieve the desired result, you will need to complete the following list of works:

1. Loosen the upper and lower nuts that secure the generator.

2. Turn the adjusting bolt clockwise while gradually and carefully moving the generator away from the block. It will be very good if you have a partner working with you, who will assess the degree of belt tension during this procedure.

3. Tighten the generator mounting nuts until they stop.

To complete the procedure for tensioning the generator belt (regardless of which method you used for this), you need to use a special wrench to perform 2-3 revolutions of the crankshaft. After this, check the belt tension again. It is worth checking the effectiveness of the work performed again after driving the car. If such a procedure does not help restore the belt to its functionality, it should be replaced with a new one, and immediately select the required length.

It is necessary to draw your attention to the fact that if there is a need to tension a belt that has become stretched during operation, its further use should not be too long. This is due to the fact that after stretching, the belt loses a number of its properties and can no longer fully perform the task assigned to it. Such a RG was named multi-stream due to the fact that there are several rows of furrows on its inner side. Due to the fact that this type of RG is more flexible, it is usually used not only to drive a generator, but also other components - power steering, compressor, air conditioner, etc.

Regardless of what type the generator drive belt is, they are all manufactured according to the same principle. It is based on specialized rubber. Also, the design of such RGs includes several layers of strong reinforcing thread.

Repair of under-hood power plant

Removing the generator is a simple procedure. However, to perform it you will have to crawl under the car. In addition, it is better to remove the battery in advance, as it will interfere with unscrewing the nut securing the device to the adjustment bar.

  1. We roll the car into a hole or lift the right front part of the car with a jack and place bricks under it. Don't forget to put the car in gear or put the handbrake on.
  2. We remove the crankcase protection if it interferes.
  3. Slightly unscrew the nut of the lower mounting of the generator.
  4. We get out from under the car and loosen the nut on top that secures the unit to the adjustment bar.
  5. We push the generator towards the engine and remove the drive belt, first from the pump pulley, and then from the generator and crankshaft pulleys.
  6. We finally unscrew the nut securing the unit to the adjusting bar and remove it together with the washer.
  7. We climb under the bottom again, unscrew the cap of contact “30”, then disconnect the remaining wires and remember where to plug them in later. If the memory is bad, we mark everything with a marker.
  8. We finally unscrew the nut securing the generator from below, remove the bolt with one hand, and support the device with the other so that it does not fall.
  9. We pull the generator down, after tilting it.

Repairing a VAZ generator is not a very simple matter. To overhaul the unit, you need to have many special tools for disassembly and diagnostics. Therefore, it is better to entrust such an operation to specialists who have all the necessary equipment.

Without special knowledge and pullers, only replacing the generator brushes is possible. To perform this operation, you need to find contact “67” on the back cover of the unit. Directly below this contact there is a brush holder secured with just one screw, which must be unscrewed. Now we pull out the brush holder, check the condition of the brushes and the distance at which they protrude from the device. If this indicator is less than 12 mm, the brushes must be replaced.

1) Take a screwdriver and use it to carefully pry the cover on the hinge mounting bolt.

2) Remove the trim, being careful not to damage its clips.

3) Take the key and unscrew the bolt that secures the RB hinge.

4) After removing the hinge, try to put it somewhere in a visible place so that the small parts associated with it do not get lost.

5) Arm yourself with a screwdriver again and remove the cover, but this time on the coil.

6) Unscrew its mounting bolt, being careful not to lose the washer and spacer.

7) Remove the coil.

How to change rear belts and their locks on a VAZ 2106

Rear belts usually last longer than front ones, but they don’t last forever. The tools are the same, but to replace it you will first have to remove the back of the rear sofa. Further:

1) Use a screwdriver to pry up the cover and then remove it.

2) Unscrew the mounting bolt located at the bottom.

3) Repeat step 1 for the top fastening, exactly like step 3.

6) Then unscrew the bolt securing the hinge, and then remove it with its associated small parts.

7) Now it's the turn of the coil bolt.

8) Next you need to pry up and remove the RB guide.

9) Pass the belt assembly with guide and loop through the slot in the rear pillar trim panel.

Replacing locks is done as follows:

Reasons for the break

  1. 1. Exhausted resource. The belt needs to be changed at 50-60 thousand kilometers, but many do not do this;

This method is more progressive and is used in most modern machines. It is based on the use of a special adjusting bolt, by turning which you can adjust the position of the generator relative to the engine. The algorithm of actions in this case will be as follows:

  • loosen the generator, its upper and lower fastenings;
  • Using the adjusting bolt, we change the position of the generator;
  • fix and tighten the generator mount.

The belt tension level in this case can be determined during the adjustment process.

The drive belt is located in the front of the engine compartment and is tensioned over the alternator, crankshaft and cooling system pump pulleys. The strength of its tension can be checked by deflection in two places:

  • between the crankshaft pulley and the pump, the deflection should be within 1.2 - 1.7 cm;
  • between the pump and generator pulley – 1 -1.5 cm.

If there is a discrepancy, adjustment must be made.

Stages of work

The tensioning procedure is one of the replacement stages, which consists of the following steps:

  1. First you need to unscrew the upper mounting bolt of the generator, which acts as a tensioner. There is no need to unscrew it completely; a couple of turns are enough to loosen the strap.
  2. Then you need to move under the car and loosen the lower nut securing the unit.
  3. Next, holding the upper fastening nut, you need to move the device towards the cylinders until the minimum tension is achieved.

  • Now the strap can be easily removed from the pulleys. It is better to remove it from the water pump pulley first, and then from the rest.
  • The new consumable must be pulled sequentially onto all pulleys of the units.
  • Tension should be made by moving the tension nut. Turning clockwise increases the tension, turning it counterclockwise decreases it.
  • After adjustment, tighten the unit fastening nut.

    Structurally, the generator on the “seven” has the shape of a cylinder. The cast body contains many small parts, each of which performs its own functions. The main elements of the G-221A are the rotor, stator and covers, which are cast only from a special aluminum alloy.

    Rotor

    The G-221A rotor consists of a shaft with a corrugated surface, onto which a steel sleeve and poles are pressed. The bushing and beak-shaped poles together form the so-called core of the electromagnet. The core produces an electromagnetic field during the rotation of the rotor shaft.

    The excitation winding is also located inside the rotor. It is placed between the poles.

    The moving element of the rotor - the grooved shaft - rotates thanks to two ball bearings. The rear bearing is mounted directly on the shaft, and the front bearing is fixed on the generator cover.

    Stator

    The stator is assembled from special plates 1 mm thick. The plates are made of electrical steel. It is in the stator slots that the three-phase winding is located. The winding coils (there are six in total) are made of copper wire. Strictly speaking, the electromagnetic field coming from the rotor core is converted by the coils into pure electricity.

    The generator in the described configuration produces only alternating current, which is clearly not enough for the smooth operation of the car. Therefore, in the G-221A case there is a rectifier (or diode bridge), the main task of which is to convert alternating current into direct current.

    The diode bridge has the shape of a horseshoe (for which it received the corresponding nickname among car enthusiasts) and is assembled from six silicon diodes. On the plate, three diodes have a positive charge and three have a negative charge. A contact bolt is installed in the center of the rectifier.

    The voltage regulator on the VAZ 2107 is made together with a brush holder. The device is a non-separable unit and is fixed to the back cover of the generator. The regulator is designed to maintain the rated voltage in the network in any operating mode of the engine.

    The pulley is not always considered an integral part of the generator, since it is mounted separately on an already assembled housing. The main task of a pulley is to transmit mechanical energy.     Removal

    Evaluate the appearance of the belt. If the condition is good, check the tension and tighten it if necessary. It’s easy to check: press the belt with your fingers with a force of 10 kg anywhere. Either in place “A” the distance by which the belt should bend will be 10-15 mm, or in place “B” 12-17 mm (see picture).

    Note! It is more convenient to press and check the deflection at point “A”. Any deviation from the norm requires tightening the belt. Remember, do not remove the belt from the pulleys unless you intend to replace them!

    Move to the lower part of the car and unscrew the lower nut of the generator one turn (see small photo), get out from under the car and go to the engine compartment. Loosen the nut of the upper fastening of the generator one or two turns (red arrow in the photo), an extension with a universal joint and a union head will help you (tools are indicated by a blue arrow). Loosen through the battery installation bar.

    Note! The top nut securing the generator to the bar is screwed differently for everyone, so when you feel that the nut goes on easily (be careful not to unscrew it completely), then stop unscrewing immediately!

    Let's move on to changing the belt. Use your hands to move the alternator towards the engine and remove the belt. If you just need to adjust, then insert a mounting blade between the engine and between the generator itself (see photo below), and, using the blade as a lever, move the generator away from the engine. Holding it in this position with a spatula, tighten the upper nut securing the generator to the bar and the lower one too. Release the paddle and remove it, check the belt tension and, if necessary, perform the operation again (if the tension is not within the normal range).

    Note! Having unscrewed both nuts, first remove the belt from the upper pulley, and only then from the steel ones. The topmost one is the cooling pump pulley. On fuel-injected cars, in addition, remove the crankshaft position sensor, otherwise it will not allow you to remove the belt, and you will break the crankshaft sensor.     Installation

    First, install the belt on the crankshaft pulley. In the image above, look at the pulley indicated by number 3, the generator pulley by number 2 and the pump pulley by number 1. Move the generator completely towards the engine, if it is moved, but the belt still does not install, then carefully turn the pump pulley (upper) by hand, or at the extreme In this case, ask an assistant to use a crooked starter to turn the pulley a little, while you put the belt on the upper pulley of the pump.

    Belt tension
