Has a sad icon in the form of a car with a key lit up on the instrument panel of your Opel Astra? Is the generator light on or off? It looks like there is some problem with your car. And to eliminate the malfunction, you need to read the error codes of the Opel Astra H. To do this, in normal mode, you can use a dealer scanner. But what to do if you don’t have the device at hand, and you don’t want to spend time and money on a trip to the dealer? Exit: deciphering error codes manually.

How to read errors on Opel Astra H

The design of car electronic systems is complex and has its drawbacks. Often the standard “check engine” indicator is not displayed on the instrument panel. Consequently, the car enthusiast cannot correctly analyze the condition of the vehicle.

To view all available errors, you will need to read the information using special equipment. The car has a self-diagnosis mode, but due to its low efficiency, drivers prefer not to use it.

Reading errors usually looks like this.

  • The car's ignition is turned on; if there is a manual transmission, the lever is moved to the neutral position.

  • Next, you will need to connect a laptop with software or a special diagnostic scanner, similar to a dealer’s device. The connection occurs through a connector installed under the trim near the handbrake lever.

  • After this, the diagnostic program starts on the scanner. Usually in a dialog box, the program asks you to enter the engine model, gearbox and body. Next you need to follow the developer's instructions.
  • The computer begins to read software failures and errors. Once the procedure is completed, a coded list of problems is displayed on the screen.

On which cars is this problem most common?

The problem with code P2120 can occur on different machines, but there are always statistics on which brands this error occurs more often. Here is a list of some of them:

  • Buick
  • Chevrolet (Chevrolet Colorado, Equinox)
  • Chrysler
  • Ford
  • Nissan
  • Opel (Opel Astra, Vivaro, Zafira)
  • Pontiac
  • Renault (Renault Kangu, Megan)

You can sometimes encounter other errors with fault code P2120. The most common are the following: P1125, P2121, P2122, P2123, P2124, P2138.

Two methods for finding out the fault code on a Zafira without a scanner

Demonstration of self-diagnosis on Zafira A

On Opel Zafira A and Opel Astra G after 2000, with an electronic gas pedal and a manual transmission, you can read errors without special equipment using two self-diagnosis methods.

For the first, the procedure is as follows:

If there are no errors, the light flashes without stopping and without pauses. If there are errors, the light bulb displays an error code. The code consists of 4 digits. Each number is issued separately. If the light blinks 1 time it is 1, twice it blinks 2 and so on, 10 times means zero. There is a pause between the numbers.

In our case (see video) the light blinks: 10 times, 3 times, 2 times and 5 times. What does P0325 mean? When connecting the OP-COM scanner, we make sure that the information read is correct.

Diagnostics without a scanner on a Zafira with automatic transmission is carried out using a different method.

We repeat the first 3 points of the previous version, namely:

the letters ECN (error code number) and error code number will appear on the dashboard instead of the odometer information about mileage . Codes, if there are several of them, will appear sequentially in the form of six-digit numbers. Then they will disappear and the mileage will appear again. So if you don’t have time to record, you’ll have to repeat everything again.

In this number, the first 4 digits will indicate the number of the error itself, and the next two will indicate its meaning. For example, code 161450 will indicate that there is an error in the operation between the immobilizer and the ignition key. If you saw only zeros on the scoreboard, then there are no errors .

How to do a self-diagnosis on an Opel Zafira using a paper clip

There is another method of self-diagnosis on Zafira A (reading errors without a scanner), which is used when the car does not have an electronic gas pedal . To implement it you need a paperclip or a piece of wire/wire. The procedure is as follows:

Each code will consist of 4 groups of flashes. First, one flash, which corresponds to the number “1”, then a pause and ten flashes, which corresponds to the number “0”. The total result is “10” - the code for entering the diagnostic mode (this code does not blink on all machines; sometimes error codes are immediately displayed). The pause between codes is longer than between numbers in the codes. Fault codes are issued in ascending order, 3 times each in a row. We count, write down the received codes and look at their decoding. But, keep in mind that the code allows you to determine only the system circuit.

When there were problems and you identified and eliminated them, the error code stored in the memory can be deleted on its own if the corresponding malfunction does not appear within 20 consecutive engine starts.

Opel Astra H errors: decoding

The principle of reading faults is to designate them. Typically the code consists of five characters.

The first part is always a symbol.

  • C – breakdowns associated with the car’s suspension;
  • P – transmission and power plant malfunctions, while a car with a key may be displayed on the dashboard;
  • B – body equipment is faulty;
  • U – errors in electronic modules that indicate a failure of the ECU and similar systems.

Next comes a number from 0 to 3. The manufacturer's coding, tire number and other information that is not decisive for the master are indicated here. The third part of the code gives much more information and the essence of the problem.

  1. The engine has some nuances with the air supply.
  2. Same for the fuel system. Here the problem is often accompanied by an inadequate response to pressing the gas pedal.
  3. The car has problems with the ignition system. The coils or other electronics may be malfunctioning.
  4. The problem is in the additional control modules. For example, in the ESP system, ABS and others.
  5. The carburetor unit or injector is faulty. The car's idle speed is unstable and the engine speed fluctuates.
  6. Electronic errors.
  7. Automatic transmission malfunction.
  8. Similarly for the transmission units of the car.

The last two characters indicate a specific problem.

Due to the huge number of standard combinations and errors, the decoding of which can be found everywhere, including on the pages of technical literature that comes with specialized scanners, “exotic” encodings are listed below.

It is noteworthy that for most of the errors listed below there is no description.

Decoding codes

To decipher codes (fault codes for Opel Astra H), it is important to understand the conventional letter designations adopted by the manufacturer. Is it P, B, C or U .

  • Code P – operation of the Opel Astra H engine and (or) automatic transmission.
  • Code B – “body systems” (airbag, power windows, central locking, etc.).
  • Code C – chassis system (chassis).
  • Code U is a system of interaction between electronic units (for example, to the CAN bus).

Important: using the diagnostics described above, you only get errors of type P****. Faults of types C****, B**** and U**** can only be read using special diagnostic equipment!

For example, code 000970 is U 000970, that is, U0009 (symptom 70). Its reading (decoding) – no HS-CAN communication, bus shorted.

The second position (number) indicates:

  • “0” (zero) – common for OBD II codes (OBD II codes are standardized fault identifiers);
  • “1” and “2” (one and two) – year of the manufacturer;
  • “3” (three) – reserve.

We recommend: Car detailing is more than just a car wash and cleaning

The third position is the type of fault.

  • “1” and “2” (one and two) – fuel system or air supply;
  • “3” (three) – ignition system;
  • “4” (four) – auxiliary control;
  • “5” (five) – idle;
  • “6” (six) – ECU or its circuits;
  • “7” and “8” – transmission.

Positions 4 and 5 are the serial number of the error.

One of the signs of a malfunction is that the generator lamp may suddenly light up when the engine is on and also go out unexpectedly. Example: when diagnosing a car, errors 62103, 062104 occurred. We discard the last 2 digits (in the first case, first add 0, and then discard 03 and 04 respectively). We get error P 0621.
R 1463Malfunction of valve timing adjustment. Example: when diagnosing a car, we have the numbers 1463**. We discard the last two and get error P 1463.
P1607Problems with the clutch drive position control. Example: when diagnosing a car, we see the numbers 1607** on the display. We discard the last 2 (in this case it is 04). We get error P1607.
R 1614There is a problem with the connection between the immobilizer and its mark in the key. Example: when the numbers 161450 appear, we discard the last 2 (in our case this is the value 50), we get error P 1614.
R 1700
  • automatic switching failure;
  • The transmission control module requests an upcoming maintenance date;
  • signal from the O2 sensor indicating rich or lean exhaust.

Example: when the numbers 170000 appear, we discard the last 2 (in our case this is the value 00), we get an error P 1700.

R 1191
  • Check the fuel metering solenoid valve circuit.
  • low pressure in the line.

Example: when diagnosing a car, we have the numbers 119167. We discard the last 2 (that is, 67). We get error P 1191.

Checking errors Opel Astra H with pedals

To detect faults without using a special scanner, you can resort to a simple procedure. The only problem is that the on-board computer will not be able to show all the difficulties with high accuracy. Sequential diagnostics will only help determine the search area for the problem. The mechanical pedal test is performed like this.

  1. Hold down the gas and brake at the same time.
  2. After this, insert the key into the ignition. At the same time, do not start the car.
  3. We wait a few seconds until a message appears on the dashboard.

On the automatic transmission everything is a little different.

  1. Insert the key into the ignition and start the onboard circuits (we do not start the engine).
  2. Press and hold the brake pedal.
  3. Switch the gearbox lever to position D.
  4. Turn off the ignition and release the brake.
  5. Now hold down the gas and brake at the same time.
  6. Turn on the ignition.
  7. Wait a few seconds.

Instructions for verification

To correctly read fault codes on Opel Astra cars, there are several ways. Diagnostics using an adapter will allow you to get an accurate result, but you will need a laptop and software to perform it. The self-diagnosis procedure is performed without the use of third-party equipment, but when performing it, the type of transmission must be taken into account. The check process will be different for manual and automatic transmissions.

If everything is done correctly during the diagnostic process, the message ECN (Error), as well as combinations of faults, will appear on the display in the dashboard where the mileage is displayed. They are made in the form of six-digit numbers. If there are several problems in the operation of the engine and main systems, the on-board computer will show them in turn. When the fault demonstration procedure is completed, a code of six zeros will appear on the instrument panel. If the diagnostics showed a combination consisting only of zeros, then no problems were identified in the vehicle’s operation.

The first four characters displayed on the device are the fault code, and the remaining two digits are its description. If the diagnostics shows only five digits, then to decipher the malfunction you must add a zero before the code.

Manual transmission

To diagnose a car with a manual or robotic transmission, the following steps are performed:

  1. The brake and gas pedals are pressed at the same time. The engine is not running and the ignition is turned off. In this position, you need to wait a few seconds.
  2. The key is installed in the ignition switch.
  3. The ignition system is activated. The gas and brake pedals remain depressed.
  4. After a few seconds, a message appears on the dashboard. The error code is presented in the form of numbers. The resulting combinations must be rewritten on a piece of paper and subsequently deciphered.

Automatic transmission

For vehicles with automatic transmission, the diagnostic procedure is performed as follows:

  1. The key is installed in the lock and the ignition is turned on. The car engine does not start.
  2. Then your foot is placed on the brake pedal, it must be pressed and held.
  3. The gear lever is set to mode D - Drive.
  4. The ignition in the car is turned off, the brake pedal can be released.
  5. Then the gas and brake pedals are clamped and held.
  6. The ignition is activated, but the power unit does not start.
  7. Then you need to wait a few seconds without releasing the pedal.

Diagnostics with adapter

For a more accurate check, you can connect a computer or mobile device to the diagnostic connector. Direct connection of such equipment with the on-board computer is impossible, but there is an option to use universal OBD class adapters. It is desirable that the device supports Bluetooth operation. If diagnostics will be carried out using a mobile device, then software will be required; one of the universal utilities is the Torque application.

After downloading the software, you can begin diagnostics:

  1. At the first stage, the adapter is installed in the diagnostic connector. In Opel Astra H cars, this output is located on the console between the gear knob and the parking brake lever.
  2. To activate the adapter, the ignition system is turned on. The device will be powered from the car's electrical network.
  3. After activation, the Bluetooth function is enabled on the mobile gadget. You need to search for compatible equipment; the adapter itself is indicated by OBD2. The connection procedure is performed using code 1234 or 6789. After synchronization, the software is launched on the device. When the program is activated, it will automatically connect to the adapter and to the vehicle's ECU system.
  4. The next step will be diagnosis. The program will determine combinations of errors present in the memory of the on-board computer. If necessary, fault codes can be cleared. When the verification procedure is completed, it is recommended to rewrite and save the combinations in order to decrypt them correctly.

The channel “PC Repair!/IT_Comp_As” talked about performing diagnostics using a mobile device and Torque software.

Using the utility, one of the machine operating modes is selected. The car owner can independently change, remove or add the necessary controllers for testing.

With the standard settings of the utility in online mode, you can control the operation of the following parameters:

  • the temperature of the intake air or antifreeze;
  • number of crankshaft revolutions;
  • accelerator pedal position;
  • load parameter on the power unit;
  • activated speeds;
  • data from the oxygen controller and other regulators.

To add other controllers for testing, the following steps are performed:

  1. You enter the main menu of the utility.
  2. In the “Settings” window, select the “Manage Extra PIDs” section. The “Add predifined set” key is pressed.
  3. A list opens where you can select the make of the car. To select an Opel, click on the item “Pontiac/GM/Opel/Vauxhall”. This will allow the car owner to access monitoring of various other parameters.

Universal adapters that work using the Bluetooth protocol allow you to check errors using other equipment in addition to mobile devices. The main thing is that it supports such a communication standard.

Diagnostics with a paper clip

Schemes of 10- and 16-pin connectors for the Opel Astra

Checking with a paper clip allows you to determine malfunctions in the ABS anti-lock braking system. If problems occur in the operation of this unit, a light indicator appears on the control panel and the device itself turns off. To activate the diagnostic mode of this system, you need to close two contacts at the output using a paper clip or a piece of wire. The contact elements to be closed are shown in detail in the photo. The connector itself is located in the engine compartment of the car.

After closing the contacts, the ignition is activated and the light indicator on the device will show the problem code, if it is in memory. If the car is equipped with a sixteen-pin output, then a paper clip or a piece of wire closes elements numbered 5 and 6. If there are no malfunctions in the ABS system, then the Check Engine symbol on the dashboard will blink and go out. If there are problems, the on-board computer will display a four-digit combination in a series of blinks.

There is a short blink in each series of code. A longer pause is used to separate faults from each other. All combinations are repeated three times, and then the next code comes. Failures are displayed on the dashboard in ascending order. After completing the troubleshooting cycle, there will be a pause, and then all the codes will repeat again.

When diagnosing faults in an Opel Astra, you need to close the correct contacts with a paper clip to prevent damage to the on-board computer.

User Konstantin Pr0gra2Mer spoke in detail about diagnosing all systems using a paper clip.

How to reset errors on an Opel Astra H yourself

The most effective reset is not done with pedals. This way you can only clear certain codes and remove illuminated icons on the dashboard. Without a special scanner and the help of a computer, this will be impossible. The sequence of actions looks like this.

  1. Connect the PC to the vehicle diagnostic connector installed near the handbrake lever.
  2. Insert and turn the key in the ignition - do not start the engine.
  3. Launch the appropriate program on your computer and follow the instructions. The sequence of actions may differ depending on the available software.
  4. After this, sequentially disconnect the equipment from the machine and restart the engine.

Car diagnostics

If you are the owner of an Opel Zafira, then you yourself can diagnose the vehicle to identify breakdowns . Of course, this can be done using specialized equipment, but this does not always make sense. Especially if it is possible to independently check the on-board computer. It should be noted that if you check the car system for breakdowns with your own hands, you will see codes that are slightly different from those that the technician will see when checking with specialized equipment.

So, how can you diagnose a car yourself? The instructions differ for cars with automatic and manual transmissions.

For manual transmissions

The ECN icon that lights up on the instrument panel of your Opel indicates the presence of errors

For automatic transmissions

If you did everything correctly, the ECN message and a fault code will appear on the speedometer, where the vehicle’s mileage is indicated. By the way, ECN is translated as Error code Number. Some people confuse this abbreviation with ESP, which means exchange rate stability system, but this is incorrect. In any case, whether you have an automatic or manual car, the error codes will be the same.

Also note that when pressing the pedals it is important that the limit switches are activated. That is why you don’t need to press the brake too hard, with medium force, and you need to press the gas to the floor until a click appears. Having done everything correctly, you will see fault codes. The first four digits of the combination indicate the failure code, the next two - its meaning. For example, breakdown 161450 indicates a malfunction in the functioning of the circuit between the ignition key and the immobilizer.

During self-diagnosis, fault codes will be displayed automatically, one after another.

Carrying out car diagnostics yourself

To carry out diagnostics, you need to perform some steps, which differ for vehicles with manual and automatic transmission.

For manual transmission

For a manual transmission, the following sequence of actions should be performed:

For automatic transmission

To diagnose an Opel Astra N with automatic transmission, the steps are slightly different:

When we depress the pedals, you need to press the brake with medium effort, and press the gas pedal all the way until you hear a click, this is necessary for the limit switches to work (the author of the video is VIDEO ZAG).

If there are several faults, the codes will appear one after another. At the end of the list a code of 6 zeros will be displayed. If zeros appear immediately, this indicates that there is no problem. The fault code is in the first four digits, the last two are encrypted with the meaning of the fault. If the number of digits is 5, then to decrypt you need to add a zero in front.
